Mother’s Day is almost here! Are you still wondering what to do for your mom? Is it the same thing each year? Whether you are planning for your own mom or as a dedicated husband, here are over 15 ideas (some old and some new), that hopefully will help you show that special woman in your life how much she means to you.

You can pick just one, but I suggest picking a few items from the list and making her day super special. Make sure that you don’t forget that mom’s love sharing how awesome their family is on social media – so make sure your present is brag worthy to her followers.

15+ Special Ideas for Mother’s Day #1 – Give Mom the Day Off

A day off means a day off! Don’t expect Mom to clean, cook, deal with the kids or any of the other million things that Mom does every day. As an extra bonus, you should let her sleep in as well!

#2 – Prepare Mom Breakfast in Bed

Moms are always busy feeding everyone in the house – isn’t it time mom got a specially prepared meal of her own. Just make sure if you are preparing breakfast, that you also do the cleanup after. Dads, here are some tips on “How to Make Breakfast in Bed for Mom on Mother’s Day.”

#3 – Pamper Mom at a Spa Day

This is the woman that has selflessly taken care of you (or is the mother of your kids), either way she needs a break! Help her relax and enjoy some time being pampered by organizing a spa day (with you, her kids, her friends, or even on her own).

#4 – Impress Mom with Your Writing Skills

Now a personalized card or message may sound a bit boring, but trust me if it comes from the heart Mom will love it. Tell mom how much she means to you by taking some time to write her a special message. As sappy as this sounds, moms love homemade cards (especially from young kids) and meaningful messages from the heart (check out this Easy Kid’s D.I.Y. Card & Flower Gift for Mom). Just FYI, most moms save these cards and probably have a huge collection stored away someone to show you when you get old.

#5 – Bring Mom into the 21st Century with a New Electronic Gadget

Who says dad is the only one that is into electronics? Decide what your mom needs and hook her up with the latest technology. Is it a new phone, iPad, camera, photo printer, computer – the list goes on. If an electronic gadget is out of your budget, maybe just get her a new set of headphones, selfie-stick, phone case or other accessory.

#6 – Plan a Family Meal in Mom’s Honor

Whether it is brunch, lunch or dinner, mom deserves an extra special meal. There are great Mother’s Day meal promotions everywhere (some even include goodies for mom, like makeovers, spas & flowers), so make sure you book ahead and get Mom a reservation at a restaurant she will enjoy. Try to gather together all the members of your family to make the meal extra special. Alternatively, you can even invite everyone to your home for Mother’s Day (but remember, it’s Mom’s day to relax and she will not be doing the cooking).

#7 – Take Mom on a Shopping Spree

Let mom pick the present of her choosing. Set a budget (or don’t) and let mom shop to her heart’s content. Make sure you are there to help her hold the bags and select the items – she will love the company (just don’t complain on how long she is taking – this is her day – let here enjoy it). You can also stop mid-way through the day to enjoy a meal or take a tea break.

#8 – Travel with Mom to an Exotic Location

How many times has mom been to Disneyland, hotels with waterparks or other child friendly vacation. When was the last time mom went somewhere for herself? Isn’t it time mom got to take a trip to somewhere she wants to go? Maybe it’s the Maldives, Paris or Hawaii – find out what is on Mom’s bucket list and go!

#9 – Organize a Family Photoshoot

What better way to commemorate the day then a full family photoshoot in Mom’s honor. Make sure you also get nice framed portrait at the end for Mom to hang on her wall.

#10 – Get Mom a Stylish Makeover

Most moms would really appreciate a nice makeover. It can be fancy or just for the day. Makeup, hair, clothes, or the works. This would be a good gift right before the family photoshoot or even a meal. Make sure you take lots of before & after photos.

#11 – Organize a Memorable Staycation for Mom

Plan a fun and relaxing staycation right in your own hometown. Think about what mom would like best, is it with the family, on her own, with friends, at the spa, at the beach – the possibilities are endless. You may even want to include a spa treatment and let Mom go wild with ordering room service! It’s her day, so let her enjoy.

#12 – Get Mom an Aesthetics Treatment

Is it slimming, cellulite reduction, tightening, peeling, laser, fillers or lifting that mom needs? Trust me mom wants it, but is afraid to ask. Aesthetic treatments are something that are still quite new age and older moms might be hesitant, but its worth putting it out there and who knows maybe mom might agree. Some of my favorite treatments are Rejuran, CoolSculpting, Fraxel Laser & Cosmelan.

#13 – Do Something Adventurous with Mom

Mom may be a little overly cautious, but she still likes to have fun. Help her bring out her adventurous side by doing something out of the norm with her. Take her bungee jumping, surfing, on a speedboat, ride segways or whatever else you can think off. Who knows mom might actually enjoy it and want more. For additional ideas, you can read this article on “Non-Traditional Outings for Mom on Mother’s Day“.

#14 – Make Mom a Keepsake Item

Whether it is a clay handprint, custom made jewelry box or engraved picture frame, Moms love keepsake items. Make her something memorable that she will save and cherish for the years to come.

#15 – Be Traditional with Flowers & Chocolate

Flowers and chocolate are a very traditional gift for Mother’s Day and most Moms still appreciate receiving this. Remember, Mom needs something to post on Instagram about. Spend some extra time and thought and select Mom’s favorite chocolates and flowers – and she will love it.

 #16 – Make a Charitable Donation in Mom’s Name

Still not sure what to get or what to do and Mom just has it all? In addition to doing something from the list, you can always make a charitable donation in her name to an organization that she feels strongly about.

#17 – Just Ask Mom, She Knows Best!

If all else fails, just ask mom what she wants to do on her special day and then MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Wishing Moms everywhere, a fabulous and fun Mother’s Day!

Do you feel like you are always on the go – taking the kids (and all of their million things) from one activity to the other and then in your free time, running errands all around town? Do you run out of spare arms, carrying the stroller, diaper bag and crying baby all at the same time? Do you sometimes wish you didn’t have to stand in the rain with whining kids waiting for a bus / taxi, or walk block after block in the sweltering Singapore sun to get to the MRT?

If you said yes to any of the above, then I might have a solution to make life a bit easier for you – Smove!

I rented a Smove car and it was super convenient and easy to do. Let me fill you in on the details…

What the heck is Smove?

Smove is a popular car sharing company in Singapore that allows you to rent a car hourly, daily and even long term. It is FREE to sign up, requires no deposits and no contracts. Also, you can pick up the car at point A and then return it to point B (a totally different location) without any extra charge. Best of all it is really, really reasonably priced!

I’m too busy to figure it out – how does Smove work?

For starters, you do not need to go anywhere, meet with anyone or speak with anyone. You can sign-up for Smove from the comfort of your own home or while you are on the go. All you need is your NRIC card, driver’s license and EZ Link Card to sign-up – NO Deposit and NO CONTRACT required. Once you are approved, you are ready to get Smove’ing.

Once you are all signed up, you can book the car online. You will need to decide how long you want to rent the car for, the type of car, the time, date and place where you want to pick-up your car. Everything relating to your Smove booking – including the car drop-off and return is done via the Smove online dashboard and via automated text messaging / email.

Where do I pick-up my Smove car from – I hate going to random places!

As I mentioned before, you don’t need to meet with anyone to pick-up your Smove car, nor go to any off the beaten path location! During your booking you select the location where you will pick-up your car from. There are over 100+ locations island-wide where you can find your car.

15 minutes prior to your booking time, you will receive the license plate number of your car. Then you need to find your car, upload some pictures of the car and then you are set.

Everything is keyless. To unlock your car, all you need to do is tap your EZlink card on the Smove panel, then press the “start engine” button and viola you are ready to go!

The best part is that you don’t need to return the car to the same place! You can return it to any of the other Smove locations and NOT be charged extra. Total flexibility – pretty awesome if you ask me.

Smove sounds great, but do I really need a car in Singapore?

Singapore has a great public transport system and lots of available taxis, so why do you need a car?

Much like you, I am also a super busy mom (and yes, lots of busy dads out there as well) – always racing between the kids enrichment classes, school events, play-dates, outdoor activities, appointments, work meetings, the grocery store and so much more on a daily basis.

In addition to carrying my giant handbag, I also usually have my laptop, umbrella and a cloth bag with the kids snacks and whatever else we need for the day (including a change of clothes). Sometimes I also carry a pair of extra flat shoes, especially if we plan to walk a lot. If we are going to the garden or swimming or the beach, then we have tons more stuff. Don’t even get me started talking about the rainy days – balancing an umbrella and all those things, while holding my child’s hand is no easy task. If guests are visiting, then there are even more people and more things to get from point A to point B. I am getting stressed just thinking about it. LOL.

That’s a lot of things for one person, or even two (if hubby comes along) to carry around all day! Yes, it is very convenient to have a car to go from place to place – especially if you have a young kids or a baby.

Do you really need a car in Singapore? Maybe not…but trust me it is great to have access to a car when you need it!

I want to start Smove’ing – how much does it cost?

You can rent a Smove car for a few hours, from $2 per 15 minutes (up to 2 hours) or a Smove long term rental from $440 for the entire week. The prices vary by the vehicle category you rent, Saver, Saver Plus & Value – you can choose the car the works best for your family needs. Basic car insurance is included and so is petrol (check their website out for the exact details).

Smove Special Promotion & Discount Codes

Are you looking for a Smove promotion discount code to get you started, well look no further. You can use the special promo code “SUPERMOMMY” to get a bonus $10 credit on top of the usual $10 off your first ride (total $20 off – valid till 31 May 2019).

You can also search the Internet for a special coupon code – Smove is always having awesome deals for first time renters and a referral program for friends.

“Smove for Parents” Facebook Community

Now that you have your new Smove wheels, in addition to getting your daily tasks done, all of Singapore is open for you to explore!

For fun family tips on where to go, what to do and things to see in Singapore, make sure you join the Smove for Parents Facebook Community. Many new adventures await you, I’m excited, are you?

SuperMommy’s Overall Experience With Smove

I love the concept & ease of ride sharing with Smove. I have rented cars in the past and it was an excruciating process. With normal car rental companies, in addition to booking the car online, you need to go to the rental company office, stand in line, fill out paperwork, pay for additional insurance, then walk to the big parking lot and get your car. Once you are finished, you need to return your car back to the same rental location, or else pay a fee. This not only takes a lot of time, but seriously is super annoying. Smove is definitely different and a refreshing change from the norm!

If you are in need of some wheels, either short-term or long-term, you should check out Smove and see if it works for you.

Happy Driving & Exploring New Places!

Matilda The Musical is now in Singapore! We got the chance to see the performance live on stage and LOVED IT! Matilda The Musical is inspired by the children’s classic book “Matilda” by the world renowned author Roald Dahl and is a personal favorite at our house.

This is the first time Matilda The Musical is in Asia, and lucky for us, it is right here in Singapore at Marina Bay Sands. The Musical has taken both London’s West End and Broadway by storm and received five-star reviews across the board. It’s the winner of over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical.

What is Matilda The Musical About?

The Musical is about Matilda Wormwood, a super smart, 5-year-old girl who loves reading and learning, but is being held back by her self-obsessed parents. Her parents feel that Matilda is a bother and was a mistake to have even been born. Throughout the performance, her father keeps referring to her as a “boy” and encourages her to watch TV instead of reading books.

As Matilda grows up she learns that she needs to be a little bit “naughty” in order to get through life. Some of her antics include replacing hair oil with platinum blonde colored hair dye instead, which results in her father’s hair turning green, and also putting super glue inside her father’s hat!

Matilda finally gets her chance to go to school, something she has been waiting for a long time, but school is not how she expected! The headmaster Miss. Trunchbull is really mean and a total nightmare as a principal. Matilda is able to use her special abilities and teach Miss. Trunchbull a lesson at the end.

Even through all of this, Matilda is able to form a strong bond with her teacher Miss. Honey and a friendship with the librarian Ms. Phelps, which helps her grow along the way.

SuperMommy’s Review & Recommendations for Matilda The Musical

Overall, Matilda the Musical was a very enjoyable performance and a relatable story for both kids and adults.

This was our first time experiencing a musical at the MBS Theatre and we were impressed. The show was 155 minutes long (including the intermission), which allowed us as the audience to really get into the story. My boys have been to many smaller theatre productions in Singapore, but this was definitely on a much grander scale.

My boys were really impressed (and so was I) with the performance of the younger cast members. They were very surprised that kids that young (basically their own age), could memorize all of those lines and perform day after day in front of such large audiences. This was a great eye-opening experience for my kids, which resulted in a positive conversation about hard-work, practice, talent, motivation and determination during the car ride home.

Matilda The Musical has a story within a story – the first is that of Matilda and within her story, Matilda tells another story of Miss. Honey. If you are planning to go to the show, my recommendation is to have your kids read the book, watch the Matilda movie, and/or go over the story details prior to the show. This way your kids will be able to follow-along, as the two stories do intertwine together and may get confusing.

We felt the performance was great and definitely a two thumbs up from us. This is a show worth watching for kids ages 6 and above.

Have you been to Downtown East recently? If not, you definitely need to check it out – it has become a total lifestyle hub for all ages!

A few weeks ago, we attended the “Downtown East 30” anniversary celebration and had a total blast. Uncle Ringo was there with a variety of carnival rides and games, like the Meteorite, Bumper Cars, Ghost Train and more.

At the Food Bazaar, there was an array of culinary treats by local Singapore vendors serving unique food and live performances by The Sam Willows, THELIONCITYBOY, Sam Rui, Jack & Rai, Boon Hui Lu, Scarlet Avenue, Abbey Tan and Sufie. There was even a lucky draw every 30 minutes, with $300 cash prizes and 1 grand prize of $10,000 cash!

Aside from a super activity filled day at the carnival, I realized that Downtown East has now become an awesome place (different from what I remember) for families and adults to hang out.

Let me go over some of the new things that are now happening at refreshed Downtown East….

Lots of Family Friendly Fun Places

Downtown East has become a great place for family fun! In addition to the many dining and shopping options, there are also lots of activities that kids and adults can enjoy together.

For starters, “Wild Wild Wet”, the water park that we all know and love at Downtown East, has actually increased in size and is huge! Wild Wild Wet is now is double in size and has a total of 16 rides and attractions!

Another place the kids are sure to love is Tayo Station. Tayo Station is themed around the South Korean animated series (Tayo The Little Bus) that follows Tayo and his little bus friends who often discover new sights and go on exciting adventures every day in the big city!

Tayo Station spans a massive 10,000-square-feet-space that integrates indoor playground attractions, edutainment area and sensory play space for young children from 1 to 12 years old. These include the Tayo’s Road Circuit, Poco’s Hinoki Play, and Gani’s Playground, and many more that is created to entertain while offering a healthy level of challenge for the kids to overcome.

Some other family fun things to do while hanging out at Downtown East are zooming around in the GoGreen segways, bowl at Orchid Bowl, watch a movie at Cathay Cineplex and much more.

Revamped Market Square

Downtown East has also revamped it’s Market Square, with a refreshed look and many new dining, shopping, lifestyle and entertainment options. Some of the new outlets include UNIQLO, Melben Seafood Restaurant, Flaming Spice – just to name a few. A perfect hangout for foodies and shoppers alike.

A Late Night Spot to Eat, Drink & Play

Best of all, Downtown East now offers many late night options for those nights when the kids are in bed and you want to go out with your friends to “eat, drink & play”.

For some late night activity, get a group together and play a game of darts at Forest4 Darts Cafe, which has over 20 electronic soft-tip dart boards. If you are a dart pro, you might even consider entering into one of their in-house tournaments.

If music is your more your tune, then you can check out the new OBar Live House, where you can listen to live music, while having your dinner or enjoying a beer.

Or if you would rather just showcase your own singing talent, you can karaoke the night away at the new  Teo Heng KTV Studio outlet in Downtown East.

Useful Information

Downtown East is located at 1 Pasir Ris Close in Singapore. For more details regarding promotions, shops and events, please check out the Downtown East Website.

What are you waiting for, head on over to Downtown East and enjoy for yourself!
