You are about to read below what I consider to be the essential nutrition for beauty and vitality. Bioavailable nutrition should be one of the top considerations when you want to foster real health and a vibrant glow that can only come from the inside out. A body without adequate, absorbable nutrition cannot function or heal effectively. Below are two photos of live blood analyses I had done—the first was in 2015 and the second in 2018. I ate an organic wholefood diet at both of these stages. There are two very specific reasons my bloods became healthy and one is specifically due to the Lifelong Vitality program. This leading-edge nutritional supplementation is what I recommend every single one of my clients take as a foundational program to foster internal health and great skin (read more about it below, including how you can start putting it into your daily routine). Essential Nutrition for Beauty STEP ONE: The doTERRA Cleanse and Restore Kit It’s one thing to start taking nutritional supplements, however, there are some key factors that need to be considered before adding nutrients in. Everyday living exposes us to innumerable toxins, from car fumes and herbicides to skincare, cleaning products […]

Artichoke benefits are plentiful—they an antioxidant powerhouse that add distinct flavour to dishes year-round. Not sure how to prepare them? Follow the step-by-step guide below and you’ll wonder why you didn’t add artichoke to your diet sooner. Once you master artichoke preparation, finding ways to incorporate this thistle into your favourite meals, from salads to soups, can become a much-loved culinary adventure. You don’t have to be a chef to learn how to prepare artichoke, an ancient plant that has been cultivated before 800BC. Once its thorns are trimmed and petals pulled off, you’re on your way to creating myriad dishes with a perennial plant once favoured by kings and commoners alike. Artichoke Benefits Liver-loving and cholesterol-reducing, the artichoke not only has a delicate and nutty flavour, which lends itself to a variety of hot and cold dishes, it’s also a great diet addition if you want to keep your body functioning optimally, says holistic health coach Jasmine Matthews. “They’re high in fibre, making artichokes a great choice if you have digestive issues, and the leaves contain a polyphenol antioxidant called cynarin, which has been found to increase bile flow. This keeps the liver in better shape and therefore benefits […]

Berries are fantastic for overall health, but also rate highly on the beauty scale, thanks to their antioxidant profile (antioxidants are the things that ward off free radicals; the latter being what’s responsible for rapid ageing). The humble blueberry would have to be at the top of my favourite berry list. Here are two must-have blueberry recipes to welcome in the warmer weather. Enjoy! Blueberry & Chia Breakfast Pudding Method To make the blueberry jam, combine the blueberries, honey, rosewater and vanilla in a small saucepan. Set over low heat and gently simmer for 5–10 minutes, until the blueberries soften and begin to collapse to make a chunky jam. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile to prepare the chia pudding, heat the milk, honey and cardamom together in a small saucepan over low-medium heat for 3–4 minutes, or until it reaches scalding point. Set aside to infuse for 10 minutes. Strain the milk into a medium bowl, add the chia seeds and stir to combine. Set aside for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally to break up any lumps, until the seeds absorb the liquid and swell to make a thick pudding consistency. Add the pistachios and stir to combine. To assemble, place […]

I’m honoured and excited to have been selected as an official judge in the 2018 CertClean Clean Beauty Awards. It is the first time the judges outside of North America have been chosen. Some entries have already landed on my desk and I’m about to start putting them to the test, looking at ingredients, of course, and if they actually do the job they’re marketed to do. Clean Beauty Awards founder Jenise Lee and I caught up recently to talk natural beauty and what to expect with this years’ awards. How did the Clean Beauty Awards begin? CertClean, a certification for safer skincare, grew pretty quickly in the early days as it was one of the first certification of its kind. Women were excited to learn that there was a seal of approval to help them short list products to look into. However, women would always ask, “So Jenise, what do you use? What would you recommend?” I realised that women needed more guidance. They needed to know which of the products would work for them, so I created the Clean Beauty Awards to highlight the best performing products in the clean beauty sector as a way to help women […]

INSIDER recently interviewed me about some of the world’s most expensive beauty ingredients; big dollar beauty that is said to do more than your average skincare. While they only used a snippet of what I said, I spoke to them in-depth about why some ingredients are literally worth their weight in gold. Below is my insight into why some ingredients deserve their big dollar price tag… What are the most expensive ingredients found in skincare products? Highest quality essential oils including neroli, rose, jasmine, helichrysum and melissa will always be more expensive to buy. Not only because they are so effective when it comes to skincare, as well as emotional and physical wellbeing, but because it takes a lot of work to actually retrieve the oil. Specific to essential oils, when you break it down, the oil itself is a very small component of the overall plant from which it is derived—on average it’s between one and five percent. So, it stands to reason that many plants need to be used to source just a small amount of pure oil. While some plants yield more oil, some do not, making them much more expensive. An example of this is with […]

Looking for the best natural dry shampoos? Not intended as a shampoo and conditioner replacement, dry shampoos are marketed as “in-between” beauty remedies that not only keep you looking fresher for longer, but are also said to foster healthier locks due to less washing. This of course is dependent on what ingredients are in your favourite dry shampoo. These new-age shampoos, which can range between $2.95 and $80 from chemists to high-end salons, are available as powders, liquids or aerosol sprays to suit various hair shades. Popular mainstream varieties, however, are a mix of potentially harmful chemicals: aerosol propellants, solvents, absorbing and conditioning agents—as well as fragrances, which themselves are made up of thousands of toxic chemicals that can act as hormone disruptors and cancer causers when absorbed through the scalp. However, there are natural, organic beauty companies that are meeting consumer demand for natural, powdered dry shampoos that are free from nasties. Better yet, your kitchen pantry can also save you dollars and time, with ingredients such as baking soda, oatmeal and cornstarch acting as super oil absorbers that can be brushed out of hair as easily as factory-produced varieties. Here are the best natural dry shampoos as of […]

Parents can easily get focused on the latest nursery essentials and the the traditional must-haves, right? But there are two items you likely haven’t considered, but are actually, in my opinion, the most important additions to your baby’s room. The sheer amount of radiation we’re bathed in every single day—from wireless Wifi, mobile phones, wearable fitness trackers to cell phone towers and household electronics—needs to be a serious consideration when setting up sleeping quarters for the newest addition to the family (and for ourselves). When a new baby comes into the picture, websites and stores often wax lyrical about the benefits of wearable baby monitors to pry on everything from breathing regularity to heart rate. But at what cost? Wearable Baby Monitors Deemed “Not Safe” The Journal of the American Medical Association recently carried out a review and deemed these devices “not safe”. “There is no evidence that they’ll help kids and there’s some evidence of potential harm,” says researcher Dr. Christopher Bonafide. He also says they create “undue stress for parents, leading to unnecessary hospital visits and tests”. “I worry about the unnecessary care and even potential harm to babies that can be associated with alarms from these devices. There’s not a role for […]

There are natural skincare brands, then there is Essence of Humanity—a Kiwi-born brand developed by award-winning skincare creator, Stacey Fraser, who played a key role in the success of iconic natural beauty brand, Trilogy. What makes this brand special, beyond its divine formulations is that 100 percent of its profits directly benefit charity projects in Kenya and Tanzania; specifically those that help children and families escape poverty. Essence of Humanity is natural skincare with a social conscience. With ingredients such as kalahari melon seed, baobab oil, mongongo, kiwi fruit seed oil and sunflower seed oil, the brand also gives back to the skin, feeding it while warding off free radicals thanks to its high antioxidant qualities. The hero ingredient, kalahari melon seed oil, is intensely nourishing and excellent for all skin types. It is quickly absorbed and won’t clog pores. It also contains a high content of linoleic acid, which assists in the removal of excess sebum. I had to know more about the Essence of Humanity history and what its plans are for the future, so caught up with Stacey to find out about the brand that puts the greater good before profit… Can you tell me a little bit about your […]

There’s a feeling of je ne sais quois when you walk into D&M Hair Design in Auckland’s trend-setter suburb of Ponsonby—but it’s not one of beauty industry superiority, despite the salon’s many successes. Stay a while and you’ll soon realise that hard-to-put-into-words “thing”, is actually a feeling of warmth amid passion… kind of like a big hug that leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy after you leave, with the bonus of having your hair cut, curled and coiffed to a level rarely experienced. At the helm is Danny Pato (and his business partner, fellow hair-God Michael Sisaengrath), a stylist who lives and breathes his art; coupling it with a genuine love and care for his clients. So, it’s little wonder Danny Pato is celebrated—by clients and the hairdressing industry—for his talent. Earlier this year, he was named New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year for the third consecutive year, a feat never achieved by any Kiwi stylist—until now. While Danny and his talented team celebrated their win well beyond the announcement, it’s now back to the salon, giving people do’s they cant get enough of, all the while planning for the 2019 awards. I spoke to Danny to find out […]
