When you're looking to meet up with friends for appetizers and adult beverages during your vacation in Belmar, New Jersey, you'll find plenty of options for casual fare and cocktails. Here are the Belmar Beachcomber's top picks for happy hour dining. Restaurants listed in alphabetical order. 1. 10th Avenue Burrito Company 801 Belmar Plaza Belmar, New Jersey www.tenthaveburrito.com Known locally for its "all-day happy hour," 10th Avenue Burrito Co. in Belmar offers $3 domestic drafts, $5 house wines, and other drink specials Monday to Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the inside and outside bars. Our favorite appetizers are the pork molé nachos with guacamole and sweet chili chicken wings served with avocado ranch dressing. Try the sweet and spicy corn soup, too! 2. Flames Brazilian Steakhouse 1000 Main Street Belmar, New Jersey www.flamesbraziliansteakhouse.com When the seasonal summer liquor license is in effect at Flames rodizio restaurant in Belmar, you can enjoy happy hour and live music at the full-service bar Monday to Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Happy hour specials include half-price appetizers, Brazilian-inspired cocktails, bottled beer, and wine. Try a refreshing caipirinha cocktail made with Brazilian rum, Sao Paolo Tropical with Grey Goose vodka, or a pitcher of specially mixed sangria. For appetizers, half-price small plates are perfect for sharing. We like the garlic shrimp, Parmesan-fried polenta, and empanadas. 3. Klein's Tiki Bar 708 River Road Belmar, New Jersey www.kleinsfish.com Klein's, which is celebrating its 90th year of business in 2019, is our go-to happy hour spot on Sunday afternoons after the beach. The riverfront tiki bar serves happy hour specials from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with live music seven days a week. The bar menu includes $5 Tito's cocktails, $6 Tito's martinis, half-price wines by the glass and frozen/well drinks, as well as draft and bottled beer specials. Happy hour prices include discounted raw-bar specials, and you also can order from the all-day menu or the new riverfront bar and grille menu. The Belmar Beach sushi roll and boom-boom shrimp are personal favorites. 4. La Dolce Vita Italian Seafood Grill and La Terrazza 400 and 408 Ocean Avenue Belmar, New Jersey http://laterrazzabelmar.com/ In addition to daily $5 appetizers and drink specials, you'll enjoy the people-watching and ocean views during happy hour at La Dolce Vita on Ocean Avenue. Just next door, the bar at La Terrazza ("The Terrace") also serves casual Italian fare, flat breads, pizza, and cocktails. 5. Mr. Shrimp Seafood Restaurant and Market 1608 Highway 71 Belmar, New Jersey www.mrshrimp.com Mr. Shrimp is a BYOB seafood restaurant, so the "happy hour" here is all about special pricing at the raw bar every Monday to Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Raw bar specials include oysters and clams on the half-shell, shrimp cocktail, and more. Other Popular Places For Happy Hour Belmar has other popular options in town for happy hour, including Jack's Tavern on 10th Avenue downtown, the Boathouse Bar & Grill at 1309 Main Street, Anchor Tavern on 8th Avenue and Main Street, the Marina Grille and the 9th Avenue Pier at the Belmar Marina. In nearby Lake Como, New Jersey, Bar Anticipation ("Bar A") is a year-round destination for Friday happy hour with a free buffet and drink specials. Outside of Belmar, we recommend the happy hour at Pagano's UVA Restaurant and Wine Bar, 800 Main Street, Bradley Beach, New Jersey. Happy hour at UVA is all day Sunday, noon to 7:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and noon to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The bar menu features pasta, salads, grilled sandwiches, and other selections. Also, Tuesday is half-price pasta night at UVA in the dining room and at the bar. The lobster ravioli at UVA are amazing paired with a Ceasar salad from the $5 happy hour menu. Cheers! The competition, which begins at 8 a.m., is free and open to participants of all ages. First, second, and third prizes will be awarded in the following categories, along with a Best on Beach award. Age 7 and under Age 8 to 11 Age 12 to 15 Age 16+ Camps and recreation Families Classic sandcastle Judging is based on creativity, resourcefulness, originality, and accessories. You can’t drive through downtown Belmar, New Jersey, without noticing the iconic Taylor Hardware store on the corner of Main Street and 10th Avenue. For 125 years, generations of area families have shopped at Taylor Hardware for its vast selection of home and garden goods, seasonal merchandise such as beach chairs and gas grills, and home-improvement services such as lamp and screen repairs. Without a doubt, residents and visitors alike appreciate the friendly, small-town customer service that Taylor Hardware is best known for. Tell us a little bit about your business. Taylor Hardware has been serving the Jersey Shore since 1894. The store has had various locations in Belmar, and we have been located on the corner of Main Street and 10th Avenue since 1962. We sell everything for the homeowner, small contractor, and do-it-yourself crowd. Our business is known for great service, a large selection of products, and a very knowledgeable staff that is always willing to help the customer. What was the inspiration for your business? Our store fills a need for the Shore towns. Trends and technology changes over the years, but people still need a good hardware store. We have a strong and loyal customer base and work hard to keep them happy on a daily basis. What do you enjoy most about being part of the local business community? I feel that we are a strong part of the local business community. Its enjoyable to see how the businesses support each other. I interact with almost everyone in town in at some point. People come in to get a key cut and end up hanging around sharing stories and town news. What makes Belmar great is our people and their loyalty to our town! What is something most people don't know about your business? People are often surprised that I am not Joe Taylor! My dad, Bill Connor, bought the store from John Taylor in 1978. We are entering our 40th year in business. If I was asked to describe my background in a few sentences, I would tell you that…. I was raised in Belmar, graduated St. Rose High School in 1982, and went onto Saint Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont, graduating in 1986. I me my wife, Donna, at St. Rose, and we have been married for 29 years. We have two children: Our son, Jake, is currently involved in the business, and our daughter, Gabriella, works for a marketing firm in Red Bank. When I’m not working, I like to…. When I am not in the store, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love to play golf and have met a lot of great people on the golf course. Often, I get to play with my mom and my son; we call it the three-generation game! Donna and I love getting out on the boardwalk and enjoying our beautiful beaches; it is a happy place for us. What is the biggest lesson you have learned being in business for yourself? The biggest lesson I have learned over the years is patience. Some years are better than others, but over the course of time, it evens out. Another lesson that we practice every day is trying to treat everyone with respect. Take care of your customers and they will always come back! A swell of surfers will compete for top honors in men’s, women’s, longboard, junior, and legends divisions during the Belmar Pro surfing competition on September 13, 14 and 15, 2019. The event is presented by Eastern Lines Surf Shop in Belmar, New Jersey. According to Don Tarrant, owner of Eastern Lines and organizer of the legendary local surfing competition, the Belmar Pro will include a bodyboard event as part of the Association of Bodyboard Professionals (ABP) tour. "It will be the first pro bodyboard event on the East Coast in years," Tarrant says. "In addition, we will have a number of food, clothing and surf industry vendors that are sponsors of the event. We'll also have several surf artists and a number of vendors representing several volunteer groups such as the Surfrider Foundation." Tarrant, who was inducted into the New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame in May 2019, has been involved with the Belmar Pro since its beginning in 2001. He and his partner, Scott Goodwin, "have worked very hard to improve the event through the years, both the infrastructure and attracting some of the best professional surfers in the world. Some of the countries generally represented are Brazil, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Barbados, and Australia, as well as the U.S. East and West Coasts and Hawaii." The entry period for the 2019 Belmar Pro opened May 1 and will close when the event is filled or by September 2, whichever comes first. "The Belmar Pro gives us the greatest opportunity to present world-class surfers with quality surf conditions. I have heard over and over again: 'I didn't know the surf was this good in New Jersey.' Hopefully, these competitors will go home with great memories and stories of their time at the Jersey Shore. I also think it's the perfect time for locals to attend an event during local summer."
