Not very long ago car buyers in India were stuck between an Ambassador and a Fiat as a choice, then the market broadened slightly and in came Daewoo and Hyundai to compete with trusty Maruti. Thankfully times have changed, and car owners and wannabe car owners are spoiled for choice in India – from an INR 3.6 lakh Hyundai Eon to a million dollar BMW. However, most of the clientele do not really grasp what new car features to look for.
ABS – Anti-lock braking system is more or less standard among new car features in all cars above INR 5.3 lakhs. It allows you to steer even if the vehicle is braking and prevents skidding. ABS has been introduced in the B segment in recent years. You have to pay a little extra, but it’s worth it because it prevents the vehicle wheels from locking during emergency braking. Essentially, the ABS system allows the driver to control the car and avoid dangers even during sudden braking. This is a crucial advantage of the ABS vehicle. However, it should be remembered that the very presence of ABS does not guarantee safety. So drive carefully.
Dual airbags – Standard abroad it has yet to become a standard new car features in India. Front passenger safety bags save lives. Airbags are now available in affordable cars. Collision sensors connected to the onboard computer activate the airbag in the event of a collision. The airbag automatically inflates to prevent impacts on the dashboard, steering wheel or windshield. Side airbags avoid the risk of injury to the user in the event of a side collision. Although airbags are optional, we recommend them.
Rear parking sensors – This new car features Comes in handy while reversing. Some may sneer at the idea that if you cannot reverse then don’t drive at all. But with a parking sensor, it is easy to park quickly and without hassle. It usually works with a beeper which gets more frequent the closer the car is to something behind.
Touchscreen infotainment system – This is an all-important new car features. It is good to have a touchscreen which provides GPS as well as music and video playback. Usual screen sizes range from 6 to 10 inches depending on the car size.
Driving comfort – An adjustable steering or at very least a 4-way adjustable driver’s seat is needed to operate comfortably.
Turbocharger – Mostly found in diesel fuel cars they boost engine power by supplying more air to the engine intake.
Electronic brake force distribution – Working with ABS the EBD system prevents the car from moving side to side while braking hard. It is quickly becoming a must-have among new car features.
Fog lamps – Proper lighting is essential for safe driving. Especially in fog, insufficient light means driving in the dark. Because fog lights produce a small but wide beam of light, they penetrate into the mist and produce no glare. It improves visibility during bad weather, not only in the fog but also in the rain. Yellow fog lamps are considered better because they only reflect part of the spectrum of light and they are less distracting. There are many types of fog lights which include HID and xenon.
A cold winter morning but you are in a hurry to get to work. With chattering teeth, you get inside your car, but the engine refuses to start. You try again and again. Do not worry at all because with a few simple winter car care tips you will make your way through the coldest of mornings.
winter car care tips
It is essential to be prepared for the winter with winter car care tips. The cold weather makes the car behave unpredictably. Some drivers dread winter, but there is entirely no reason to if one is well prepared. If you take care of your vehicle, you should be able to avoid running into unexpected trouble. Just a little bit of attention towards those parts that get affected by extreme winter cold can make your car perform effortlessly.
winter car care tips
Spend some time and make sure your car battery is in good shape. Check the amperage (current) which the battery is able to supply. If required fill the battery with distilled water. If you think it is time to change, your battery goes ahead and do it before winter sets in. Usually, due to the heater and defogger, a battery is under a lot of strain in winter and required to supply more current. Also, keep jumper cables handy in case your battery fails is essential among winter car care tips.
Make sure the windshield wiper fluid is fully topped up. The wiper is essential on foggy winter mornings. Check the wiper blades for cracks and if needed change them. It is essential to add some antifreeze to your window washer fluid if you live somewhere really cold.
Check engine oil and coolant levels regularly. Keep an eye on the engine oil. If you feel it has to be changed switch it out before winter. Keep the radiator coolant fluid at its required level. The coolant not only cools the engine but also keeps the radiator water from turning to ice. In most cars coolant also works as a source of warming for the cabin.
Are the tires are in good condition. The tires are responsible for grip and traction. Synthetic rubber hardens in winter and causes tires to crack. If the tire tread is worn out replace it immediately. Keep a close watch on tire pressure since it changes with the ambient temperature.
In hilly areas such as Himachal due to snowfall, car doors are going to get jammed since ice forms between the door and the rubber liners. Make sure the rubber liners are well lubricated to prevent ice buildup is a useful winter car care tips.
Check the condition of the brakes. Wet and slippery roads are treacherous during winter. Make safety your first priority and keep your brakes in good shape.
To avoid fogged up windows and windshield in early morning turn on car heater and dry out the air. Foggy windows are caused by moisture inside the car being cooled by cold air outside through the window glass. It is a part of good winter car care tips that heating the car removes the fog from inside surfaces.
As the name indicates Seat belt Pretensioner, it is also known as safety belt pretensioners. It is a device mainly designed to protect the passenger of the vehicle against any harmful movement caused during a collision on a sudden stop and then allow that passenger to come into contact with the inflated airbag in a controlled way. Seatbelts are considered Primary Restraint Systems (PRS), because of their vital role in passenger safety. When the driver and the passenger are traveling with the same speed in motion and suddenly the car stops with a great force then car belt prevents both of them from collision to the interior of the car by applying an opposite force to driver and passenger to the car. By so many crash testing and research, seat belts were improved and pretensioners were added to the basic seat belt for reducing serious injury and save lives of so many people.
Types of Seat Belt Pretensioner
Mechanical Seat Belt pretensioner
It operates mechanically and usually connected to the seat belt buckle assembly with a long powerful sphere that is compressed in a tube and is kept compressed by a latching mechanism. If any collision occurs the latch releases the spring which pulls on the buckle assembly and tightens the seat belt.
Electronic/Pyrotechnic Seat belt pretensioner
It works with an ECU and a gas generator system similar to the airbag. It usually works together and may use the same ECU as the airbag and that increases its effectiveness. For producing a volume of gas, it uses an explosive charge and this volume of gas produces a pressure which acts on a mechanical linkage to pull the seat belt. This pretensioner is usually located in the B-pillar. Both pretensioners have been designed to slacken off slight time lapse which allows the passenger to have a controlled contact with the airbags.
Working of Seat belt pretensioner
When a car hits something, it starts to decelerate (lose speed) very speedily and airbag sensor detects the change of speed. If the deceleration is great enough, the airbag sensor sends a signal to the ACU. The ACU passes an electric current through a heating element and it ignites a chemical explosion. The older airbags used sodium azide as their explosive chemical and newer ones use different chemicals. As the explosive burns, it generates a huge amount of harmless gas that quickly fills up the nylon airbags and as the bag expands, it blows the plastic cover off the steering wheel and inflates in front of the driver. The bag is coated with talcum powder to help it unwrap smoothly. The driver (moving forward because of the impact) pushes against the bagand the beg deflate as the gas it contains escapes through small holes around its edges. At last car stops and airbags deflated.
Like a valiant but tragic hero, the seat belt pretensioner sacrifices its life in an accident in order to save ours. Hence it is necessary to have seat belt pretensioner in the vehicle to avoid hazardous accidents and to protect our loved ones.
India’s most significant and probably most trusted car maker Maruti Suzuki manufactures and sells 140,000 units every month. From small hatchbacks such as Alto and Wagon R to mini SUVs like Vitara Brezza and the trendy Ciaz, all types of models are sold through its two thousand showrooms. Till now Maruti Suzuki showrooms have been decked out in the familiar blue and white and had a rather dull interior design. The company has now decided to upgrade 80 of the showrooms to Maruti Suzuki Arena in 2018. It plans to aggressively redesign every Maruti outlet in the country to allow all customers to explore Maruti Suzuki Arena.
explore Maruti Suzuki Arena
Based on the feedback the other showrooms will also be improved in the coming few years. This comes hot on heels of the premium Nexa showrooms. Maruti is in a mood to overhaul. It has just changed its True Value used car dealerships. Now it wants to explore Maruti Suzuki Arena into the new customer experience.
All customer relationship managers will be equipped with tablets which will allow them to display the whole product portfolio easily and will enable the customer to compare between models. It will also contain a lot of information allowing the relationship managers to answer customer’s questions promptly.
With the help of a new program called iCreate customers will be able to choose specific configurations for Swift and Brezza. This is very innovative to explore Maruti Suzuki Arena.
The new Arena dealerships will do away with the decades-old brochure that every customer is presented with when they enter a showroom. Maruti is embracing new tech in a big way to win over new customers. The new dealerships will have an excellent new touchscreen panel which will offer details of model, specs, features and a 360-degree view of the car from any angle.
Customers of Maruti will now be able to book the vehicle they want to buy or configure them from a new website. The same facility as offered in the dealership touchscreen will also be available at home. The customer can not only book a car on the site, but also adapt its features and specs. To do this, the customer must first register before he can view and configure the vehicle selection on the site.
There will be a change in ambiance and design language. Warm yellow lighting with ivory theme and polished wood finish countertops will make it more inviting and less clinical than the harsh fluorescent glare. The Maruti Suzuki Arena dealerships, however, will not do away with the familiar blue walls altogether. They will remain with Suzuki’s backlit logo.
Each Arena dealership will have a dedicated zone with accessories and car personalization items on sale.
Instead of a pantry, the newly rechristened dealerships will have a café and a lounge for customers to be able to sit quietly and discuss.
Significant changes in Maruti Suzuki dealerships will be all about enhancing customer experience to a new high. The Arena dealerships are at the core of Maruti’s efforts to revamp the brand and shake off its slightly dowdy image. It will be a really relaxing experience for customers to explore Maruti Suzuki Arena. The company wants to be seen as a new and innovative automobile manufacturer offering new and innovative models and not as a producer of staid and trusty workhorses.
As the name signifies, Antilock Braking System (ABS) is an active safety system used on aircraft and on land vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, trucks, and buses. It is also known as the anti-skid braking system. It keeps vehicles wheels from locking up and helps their drivers to maintain steering control and thus avoid uncontrolled skidding of the vehicle and decreases the distance traveled without slipping.
Working principle of ABS
The Antilock Braking System has a simple basic theory of working, having the following components:-
Wheel speed sensor-
It is a vehicle speed sensor which continuously monitors the speed of each wheel. It doesn’t interfere with the operation of the wheel as long as all the wheels have comparable speed. If it finds any mishap with the speed of wheel then ABS module unit comes into action.
ABS control module-
When it receives the low-speed signal from wheel speed sensor, ABS module orders the brake control unit to reduce the braking force of that wheel.
Brake control unit, Valves, and Pump-
The brake control unit reduces the line pressure with the help of valves in the system. When the braking force decreases, the wheel starts rotating at a higher speed, thus avoiding the lock of wheels. Thus the vehicle moves according to the driver’s input without skidding as the stability of the vehicle remains intact. Therefore the normal condition restore, the Brake control unit restores the hydraulic pressure in the brake line with the help of a pump.
Advantages of Antilock Braking System
The main benefits of ABS include the following:-
Stopping on ice-
ABS prevents lock-ups and skidding even in slippery conditions. So, it has proven to be a life-saving device in icy areas and on slippery targets to control the situation by helping drivers in controlling their vehicle.
Low cost of Insurance-
Being a thoroughly tested safety device with a good record of effectiveness, the insurance company gives customers specific discounts for having ABS system on their vehicle.
High Resale value-
ABS being a good feature has increased the market value of the vehicle. Nowadays, where ABS technology has become standard on many vehicles, not having it could result in low exchange value.
Disadvantages of the Antilock braking system
Over having so many advantages of Antilock Braking System, there are so many disadvantages of ABS which includes following-
Inconsistent stop at times-
Some drivers report that they find it difficult in some situation in stopping vehicle due to some errors in the system.
It is not pocket-friendly for all classes of people as it is too expensive to maintain.
ABS is so delicate system and can cause a problem due to messing around with the brakes.
Antilock Braking System is necessary for the people as it less the risks of accidents and so many fatal conditions on road but we shouldn’t become dependable on it. Having ABS fitted is not an excuse for speeding in a hazardous situation or late braking. Even though we may have ABS fitted in our vehicle but we still have to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
