Pondicherry french Colony Story: Visiting Pondicherry on the East coast of India, you may be forgiven for thinking you’ve somehow ended up in Paris, France. Since the 17th century, Pondicherry has been influenced by French rule, starting with the French East India Company.

They laid down roads, built European structures and influenced the language of the settlers there. France handed back the ruling of Pondicherry to India in 1954, but its influence is still felt everywhere. Today there are around 5,500 French Indians living in Pondicherry and keeping their French heritage alive.

STATUE OF DUPLEIX

To really learn about the historic past of Pondicherry you’ll need to take a stroll to Rock Beach, where you can view the statue of the French Governor General Joseph Francious Marquis Dupleix. He governed this area of India throughout the eighteenth century and, due to his excellent leadership, was promoted to Superintendent of French Affairs for the town of Chandernagore.

He survived several interactions with the British, keeping the East safe during the besiegement in 1748. Despite all his hard work he was forced to return to France in 1754 to live out the rest of his days. This statue commemorates all his life’s achievements and his excellent leadership over Pondicherry.

FRENCH FESTIVALS

There are numerous festivals that take place across the year but the one that celebrates all things French is the Mascarade Mask Festival.

This celebration goes on in March or April and reflects a French sense of humor, with extravagant masks and fancy costumes. Residents and visitors march through Pondicherry’s cobblestone streets performing dance numbers to the beat of French trumpets. This festival is always full of laughter and fun and celebrates the French ancestry of the region.

FRENCH FOOD

French-inspired food is Pondicherry’s forte and you’ll find good French wine and Parisian-style baguettes in many of the restaurants. All around the city restaurants and cafes are mixing French, European and South Indian flavors, creating an epic combination of fascinating textures and dishes.

The best French fusion restaurant in the city is Le Chateau, aiming to bring classic French dishes, Indian cuisine, and even Italian favorites together. Pondicherry’s coastal location means this restaurant is always serving up the freshest seafood available. But it’s not just fish that’s on the menu, Le Chateau also serves fantastic pasta, steaks, and curries.

THE FRENCH WAR MEMORIAL

Located on Goubert Avenue opposite the statue of Mahatma Gandhi stands the towering French War Memorial. It was built in 1971 to commemorate those who lost their lives fighting for the country during World War I.

During the French holiday of Bastille Day on 14th July, this memorial comes to life and is illuminated in light. During the celebrations tourists and locals come to pay their respects to those who died to protect their freedom. This beautiful memorial can be found right near the seaside promenade and is a must-see for anyone interested in learning about Pondicherry’s French heritage.

For more information on the city’s French history, you can read through this Pondicherry travel guide.

Based near Manali (6,726 ft.) in Himachal Pradesh, Hampta Pass (14,100 ft.) connects Lahaul and Kullu valleys of the state. Forests, grasslands, deserts, meadows, rocky & slippery terrains, steep ascends & descends river crossing, this trek is full of natural punches! Here are some fundamentals about this ‘not to be missed’ trek:

Trek Level: It’s a medium level difficulty trek and therefore is recommended for slightly experienced trekkers. You should have done 2-3 treks and should have negotiated an altitude of around 9850 ft.

Guide: Due to unpredictable climate and changing & challenging terrains in Hampta Pass trek, you ‘will’ need an experienced guide and a group of people. Therefore, even if you are repeating this hike, go with a professional operator, regularly taking it up.

Best Season: June-October. Due to the high altitudes, the climate is cool through the year. Besides snow & below zero-degree temperature, erratic weather is also an issue. Summers witness the least amount of snow possible at that height, enhancing the possibility of treks in those terrains.

Physical Preparation: Any fit person aging over 14 years can take Hampta Pass trek. But you need to prepare. With lesser oxygen at heights, your heart needs to work almost double to keep you going. Add to it 10-12 Kg backpack on sharp inclines up & down and rivers too. Therefore, before heading for any high altitude, you need to build your stamina, legs & back strength, flexibility and balance over minimum a month.

Practice daily for 1 hour. Begin with 5 minutes of jogging without break and build upon it. Add to it 3 sets of 8-10 squats. Use as many stairs as you can with 10-12 Kg (great, if 15 Kg) backpack. Before you head for the trek, on plains, you should be able to cover 10 Km walk at a stretch of 90 minutes or 4.5 km jogging in 25 minutes. You should be able to walk with the 10-12 Kg backpack for 6-7 hours a day. For flexibility & preventing soreness of muscles & joints, routinely practice enough stretching & shoulder exercises.

Food: The food served on the trek is North Indian. Breakfasts & dinners are heavy and lunch light. You take meals early. Try getting used to this kind of meals cycle for a month to adjust your body.

Carry ‘only’ Essentials: You need a 50-60ltr backpack with the rain cover to stock in a walking stick, torch, sunglasses, trekking shoes, floaters, water bottle and first aid & medical kit.

Clothing includes trek pants, full sleeves T-shirts, Fleece T-shirts & jacket, thermals full set, wind & waterproof jacket & pant, sun & woolen caps, waterproof & woolen gloves, cotton & woolen socks, neck-gaiter and cotton & woolen socks. Toiletries include sunscreen, intense moisturizer & lip balm, toilet paper & wipes, hand sanitizer, antibacterial powder, toothbrush & toothpaste and quick dry towel.

The Itinerary: It’s a 5-6 days’ trek. Day-1 Reach Manali and travel to Jobra to start the trek. Hike to Chika. Day-2 destination is Balu ka Gera. Day-3 is Shea Goru via Hampta Pass. Day-4 target is Chhatru as the base camp and drives to & from Chandrataal (if weather & paths allow). Day-5 reach back Manali.

Reaching Manali: Railways, road, air, Manali is connected well on the transport network. The nearest railway station is 50Kms away, at Jogindar Nagar. Bhuntar Airport is 52 Km from Manali. Taxis are readily available. Road route claims 12-14 hours. Overnight Volvos and other buses are the best. Use the traveling time sleeping & relaxing. Land in beautiful Manali in the morning to tread further.

Suggested Reading: You can reserve one additional day in Manali and visit Vashisht Temple Manali

This is because you can allow yourself some more time to relax and to further enjoy the beautiful scenery of the water from above the cruise. Thus, firstly you are merely required to make a good choice about the cruise and your duration of stay. Longer itineraries are always recommended for all the people who are looking forward to unwinding as well as exploring more remote areas of the bay.

WHERE EXACTLY YOU WISH TO GO

As a matter of fact, the entire area that is known as Halong Bay comprises of three different bays namely, Ha Long, La Han as well as BaiTu Long Bay. All these bays embrace beautiful landscapes of caves, beaches, limestone cliffs and a lot more. Thus, if you are looking forward to visiting any particular bay and staying there, you must decide where exactly you wish to go. One suggestion, you must not miss the beautiful Cat Ba Island which is popularly known as the Jurassic Park Island.

RESEARCH THE BEST CRUISE BOAT

A good research as to the cruise boats is the key to a happy holiday at the Halong Bay. You will probably notice a huge range of boat styles, sizes as well as quality standards to cater all kinds of travelers. Thus, you must make sure to choose the best boat. For this, you must do some online research before you actually start to pull your wallet. Look into the details such as how old is the boat, what are the reviews of the boat and many others and find out the best choice for your cruise. The most important thing while choosing the boat is to find out the number of passengers that it could hold. Obviously, you won’t be along aboard. At the same time, your boat must not load a lot of people.

PREPARE & ESTIMATE YOUR BUDGET

A cruise at the Halong Bay is okay, but at the same time, you must make sure that you don’t end up hurting your wallet either. Thus, a quick research on the web will give you all the hints about the nominal accommodation, cheap food as well as nominal cruise. You must always put your smartest view while making a choice about your accommodation as well as your food. Cruising is not as easy as it seems. Be careful and smart.

BOOK YOUR CRUISE IN RIGHT PLACE

Lastly, the most important thing that you must keep in mind is to book your cruise through the right place. Vietnam is a place that has undergone a number of tourist scams and the tourists who look for cruises become the softest target. Thus, you must make sure not to walk in any hole-in-the-wall travel agency. Vietnam has always been a place that requires a beforehand research. Thus, you must try to carry out a good research before making your move. Try to find out places that are recommended by other travelers. Choose the reliable tourist company or service to help you out.

Vacationing at the Halong Bay Cruise is one of the most delightful things that you would want to experience. However, you must still keep a check on a few things before actually executing the idea.
