Thousands of poker players are in the process of getting ready to make their way to Las Vegas, Nevada to take part in the 2019 World Series of Poker. The WSOP is the biggest and most popular poker tournament in the world and this edition will have more than $200 million in guaranteed prize money up for grabs.

Poker players from all over the world will show up at the Rio Convention Center towards the end of May to take part in this month and a half long poker festival. The prize money on offer is very impressive but so is the competition. Poker players who attend the WSOP must prepare themselves for long hours at the table, a lot of emotional and mental stress and the highs and lows of winning and losing.

Most poker players tend to neglect their sleep as they want to play as many events as possible and like to burn the candle at both ends. We encourage you not to fall into this trap as it will hurt your game and also your health.

We have put together a list of four tips that will help you improve and increase your sleep which will enable you to perform at your best during the 2019 WSOP.

1. Fix Your Time To Bed

You got to be disciplined about your sleep routine while playing at the WSOP else you are going to compromise on your sleep.

Based on your schedule, decide what time you want to go to bed and stick to that on a daily basis – no matter what comes up.

2. Get A Comfortable Bed

Whether you are staying at a luxury hotel in Vegas or renting out an Airbnb, it is imperative for you to get a place where you have a nice bed and can fall asleep quickly.

Find a room where you can draw the blinds and keep things as dark as possible as it helps you have a peaceful sleep.

3. Light Exercise Or A Pampering Massage

Don’t just go from the tables to your room and expect to fall asleep immediately. Your brain needs some time to detox and a nice 15 minute walk might do it for you. If you can afford it, pamper yourself with a relaxing massage and then hit the bed.

4. Supplements

Don’t try and knock yourself out with pain killers or sleeping pills. You can instead rely on the simple stuff that has no side-effects but still work wonders.

A nice green tea before going to bed or a magnesium supplement in the morning will help you relax and start the day on the right note.

The global poker market has seen a massive amount of change in the last couple of years with both live poker and online poker offerings. The industry continues to evolve and it is difficult to predict how things will turn out.

However, it is always interesting in the gambling world to go out on a limb and make some bold predictions for the New Year.

We have put together a list of 5 interesting things that we think will take place in the poker community this year.

# PSPC Could Create Next Poker Superstar

The five-day $25,000 PokerStars Players No-Limit Hold’em Championship (PSPC) in the Bahamas is currently underway and has seen a great turnout from both micro-stakes grinders to high-rollers.

Throughout 2018, PokerStars awarded a total of 320 Platinum Passes each valued at $30,000 to random players. We believe the PSPC will be the ideal platform to launch a new poker superstar and it could very well be one of these Platinum Pass winners.

The tournament has drawn experienced players from all corners of the world, some of which are totally unknown to the general poker audience. Anyone of these unknown poker pros could be heading for a stunning victory thanks to the Platinum Pass which gave them a free seat.

# WPT Got It Wrong on Delayed Final Tables

During last year’s WPT Tournament of Champions, the WPT introduced a tweak to their final table filming. The final tables will now take place at the Esports Arena Las Vegas and will be televised from the venue on consecutive days.

Players will get the chance to experience the fantastic state-of-the-art arena but here’s the catch: they will have to make extra travel arrangements and will need to reconfigure their schedules. We don’t think this is a good move as this scenario could push away potential participants and could result in low turnouts.

# The Rise of Short Deck Poker

A poker variant which started to capture mainstream popularity in 2018 is likely to get more popular in 2019. The format has been well received with by the poker community and more tournament organizers will embrace short deck poker this year.

# WSOP Moving to New Venue

The Rio could be sold shortly and the WSOP will have to look for a new home. The rumour of the Rio being sold has been circulating within the poker circuit for quite sometime now and while WSOP steadfastly denies such claims, latest developments seem to back them up.

While popular names in the poker industry continue to dominate the tournament scene, a handful of players are having a great run – away from the spotlight.

Here, we give you 5 of today’s most promising US players who may just join the list of poker elites in the coming years.

1. William Watson

This young poker pro from Kentucky has been slaying tables since 2015. During that year, he was the third-place finisher in the $1,675 WSOPC Main Event in Indiana, taking home $55,730.

He went on finishing in the money in some other events. In 2016, he took down the $235 buy-in Daily DeepStack event at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and netted $50,770.

His biggest wins took place in the second half of 2018 when he managed to reach the final table in seven events in four months.

Watson’s tournament cashes now stand at over $258,000 and will continue to build up in the years ahead.

2. Ian Steinman

Ian Steinman, who hails from Mountain View, California, has been trying his hand in the tournament scene for quite a while now.

His poker career started to heat up in October 2017 when he won a WSOP Circuit ring.

It was then followed by great performances in the whole of 2018, with a number of final table appearances at the WSOPC, as well as 12 total cashes at the WSOP.

Last year also marked Steinman’s first six-figure achievement – a $201,428 runner-up win at the $3,500 WPT Thunder Valley. Steinman’s lifetime earnings have now surpassed the $700,000 mark.

3. Ping Liu

In December 2018, Ping Liu bagged the biggest cash of his career when he finished fourth at the WPT Five Diamond World Poker, walking away with $599,147.

Liu currently occupies the second spot of the WPT Player of the Year standings.

Owing his success to a combination of coaching, meditation and constant studying away from the table, this young poker pro’s live tournament earnings now stand at more than $1.4 million.

Ian Matakis

The part-time college student from Faribault, Minnesota started playing poker at 8 years old.

He allotted some serious time studying poker in 2017 which contributed to his good runs and successes the following year, including a $55,598 runner-up finish at the $1,100 MSPT Main Event in Iowa, as well as other final table wins.

Matakis will continue to juggle his university studies and poker, and is poised to make 2019 another good year for him.

Josh Reichard

Josh Reichard tries to make sure he plays as many poker games as he can while at the same time making sure he enjoys the game and makes money from it.

Among his biggest wins in 2018 was the $2,500 HPT Championship event where he topped a field of 434 entries, bagging $221,293.

He finished strong in several other events, which include a claiming a WSOPC ring for $38,392.

If you want to be successful at anything, you must learn the art of setting goals. While many claim that poker is based on luck and not skill, the top poker players in the game such as Daniel Negreanu have shown that setting goals at the start of the year has a major role to play in your success.

Aspiring poker players will do well to set goals for themselves in 2019. We list few key poker goals that should help you with your goal setting process.

Set Limits On Your Hands

In the game of poker, it always helps to stay in control and not go overboard. You can begin by setting a specific target as to the amount of hands you will play in a given period. This way, you can monitor yourself and eventually improve your performance. As you set a number-oriented goal, avoid setting huge targets as it might result in burnout and will affect your performance in the long run.

Take Time To Study

Practice makes perfect, but studying new strategies, acquainting yourself with the latest tools, watching training videos, obtaining strategy advice from poker-playing friends and joining poker forums are some great ways you can learn and be better prepared mentally. Studying will benefit you in the long term and will make you a better player. Set a goal on how many hours of study you will invest per week.

Track Your Own Performance

Self-evaluation is a key element in poker. You should be able to know your weaknesses by reviewing your own performance, identifying what went wrong and what can be done about it. There are tracking tools available to help you with this, like the Hold’Em Manager and the PokerTracker.

These tools record hand histories, and analyse the amount of money you have won or lost in a certain position. Review this on a weekly basis.

Challenge Yourself

Climbing up the ladder is always a fulfilling feat. While it is important that you do not lose control of your bankroll, aiming to move up stakes will help you become a more versatile player. It isn’t necessary to set a time frame for this goal – just take your time, and once you’ve accumulated sufficient money, you can join higher-stakes games and compete with tougher opponents.

Don’t Get Obsessed With Poker

At all costs, avoid being completely obsessed with poker. There’s more to life than just concentrating all your efforts, energy and attention on the felt. To avoid the risk of being emotionally strained, you can take as step back once in a while and try other activities that interest you. Set a goal of spending x amount of hours at the poker table and x amount of hours doing something you love

There’s millions to be won playing poker these days as poker operators are looking to compete with each other by putting up bigger guarantees and better promotions. There have been some great success stories told worldwide of how a no-name poker player became a millionaire overnight by having a great run at the poker table.

These success stories have spurred millions of poker players around the world to consider a full time poker career. Some of these players are interested in live poker games and are willing to travel extensively to do so while many prefer the online poker scene which allows them to play from the comfort of their homes.

While these success stories are great to hear, it is important that you carefully analyse a number of factors before you decide to jump into a full time poker career.

Three Key Areas You Must Analyse Before Jumping In

We take a look at three key areas that you must study carefully before you make this important decision.

1. Breaking Down Your Bankroll

This is going to be a key when it comes to your success or failure as a poker player and that is irrespective of whether it is online poker or land based poker.

Players need to keep careful track of their bankroll and decide on a number of factors which include: do I play games with low or medium buy-ins, how much should I spend each month on events and tournaments, and how much am I willing to lose before calling it a night.

2. Breaking Down Your Winnings

It is going to be pretty difficult for one to calculate their poker winnings especially considering the fact that they are still amateurs. However, this is important as it will give you a gauge as to how much money you should be bringing in and will provide you with real time feedback.

If you are playing online poker, there are a number of software programs that will help you to do this. This is usually calculated by comparing the big blinds lost or won based on every 100 hands played. If you are playing the live poker scene, then you will have to put in a little more effort to get this done.

3. Breaking Down Your Confidence

Playing poker for a living is going to take a lot confidence as you are likely to experience more highs than lows at the poker tables. If you don’t feel confident enough, then you should probably spend another 6 months playing poker on the side and then do a re-evaluation once the six month period is over and you have more experience under your belt.

The online poker market in India has experienced significant growth in the last 24 months as both domestic and international operators have focused on launching new tournaments and better promotions in an effort to capture a bigger percentage of this market.

Indian poker players who once had little choice when it came to choosing an online poker website, now have multiple options to choose from. However, there are also unlicensed operators penetrating the market and that means poker players in India will have to be cautious in researching and selecting a suitable online poker room.

Top 5 online poker websites operating in India Adda52

Just about every Indian poker player has heard about Adda52.com since this is the biggest online poker website in India and has a large player database. The brand is represented by popular celebrities such as Bollywood’s Minissha Lambert and West Indian cricketer Chris Gayle.

Adda52 has run some of the biggest and most popular poker tournaments in India and has a strong market reputation.

PokerStars India

PokerStars is the biggest online poker website in India and they were quick to launch operations in India as the online poker giant realized the potential of this budding poker market.

PokerStars generally has a reputation for dominating just about every market it enters but that has yet to happen in India. This is because PokerStars only launched operations in April 2018 and is still getting accustomed to the Indian market.

Real Poker India

When you play at Adda52 or PokerStars India, one can expect a lot of competition since those brands are very popular.

Real Poker India is slowly but steadily gaining prominence as the online poker website has a great No Deposit Bonus to welcome new players and also a 100 percent match deposit bonus which has proved to be very successful in getting new players to sign-up.

Poker Baazi

Poker Baazi is looking to compete with PokerStars India and Adda52 by launching exciting promotions, offering a variety of games such as Texas Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha. The online poker website has also hired top Indian boxer Vijender Singh to be its brand ambassador. Poker Baazi also has a mobile app that makes it easy to play while on the go.

Spartan Poker

While not in the same league as Adda52, Spartan Poker continues to draw a niche group of players who are comfortable with the current offerings and promotions.

Spartan should look at improving its overall speed and coming up with bigger promotions if it wants to continue to compete with the big boys.

Poker and entrepreneurship have one thing in common. They are both very rewarding professions provided you do it right. The two professions also require individuals who embrace them to have a huge appetite for risk, work on developing an excellent strategy and the ability to evaluate critical data.

5 Poker Lessons Which Could Be Useful To Start-Up Entrepreneurs 1. Believe in Luck

Though most players would argue that poker is more of a game of skill than a game of luck, there are times when elements of chance take over – you start with a poor hand and then ended up winning a full house because the luck of the draw just landed on your favour. This applies in business as well. Some successful entrepreneurs have had lucky breaks — it all boils down to having a positive mindset and recognizing that luck and right timing can spell the difference between your success and failure.

2. Make Decisions Even With Incomplete Information

The game of poker requires you to make quick decisions, even when the information is insufficient. You place bets in each turn of play on the table, totally clueless of the other players’ hands. As the game progresses, new data comes in and you slowly form a prediction based on every new information unfolding in front of you. Likewise, as an entrepreneur, your knowledge of a niche market you’re investing in won’t always be complete. Trends change, demands fluctuate, competition grows, and you have to make decisions based on your ability to evaluate things. You have to act and decide on imperfect data, otherwise you will miss your shot.

3. Know When To Quit

Successful poker players know when to quit. If the odds are not in your favour on the first hand, learn to stop and save your stack for the next. Just like in business, if you want to succeed, you don’t have to stick to something that won’t give you positive results. Divert your time, energy and resources to finding other ventures and exploring new opportunities.

4. Take Responsibility

In the end, how you play your cards determines your outcome. Getting dealt great cards won’t matter if the player is a poor decision-maker, lacks strategy and doesn’t have the skills and abilities to stay in the game. Similarly, investors always look at the entrepreneur when deciding where to pour their money. The entrepreneur is the one who takes risks and makes the decisions.

5. Give It All You Got

If the odds of success are in your favour, do not hesitate to go all in and bet everything you have on one hand. Trust your instinct and be brave and you’re in for a huge victory. As a start-up entrepreneur it takes a lot of gut and passion to succeed. If you are not fully committed, it will show in your business results.

The 10 candidates for the 2018 Poker Hall of Fame (PHOF) have been shortlisted and the poker community is debating whether a non player and first-time candidate will make it into the prestigious .

After the public nominations and vetting by the PHOF Governing Council, the 10 names that were shortlisted were Chris Moneymaker, Mike Matusow, Bruno Fitoussi, Chris Bjorin, David Chiu, Huck Seed, Mori Eskandani, Matt Savage, David Oppenheim and John Hennigan. These 10 names have been forwarded to the living members of the PHOF and the media voting panel to determine who will be the next inductees into the PHOF.

Most of these names come as no surprise as they have been part of previous PHOF shortlists before. However, two names are on the list for the very first time: John Hennigan and David Oppenheim. Both players have earned their spot on the shortlist for their sterling career records and versatility at the poker tables.

A Look At The Two New Names On The List

John Hennigan has accumulated over $8.1 million in his career so far and has shown great versatility winning his 5 gold bracelets from 5 completely different games: Limit, H.O.R.S.E., Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo, 2-7 Lowball and then at the 2014 Poker Players Championship. He has been on a tear at the 2018 WSOP cashing in nine times.

At 45, David Oppenheim is one of the younger candidates on the list but he has been on the circuit for the last 17 years and has accumulated $1.8 million in career winnings till date. He plays mostly in the United States and Australia and is known for taking part in high stakes cash games.

Will A Non-Poker Player Be Inducted?

The PHOF is also about honoring the men and women who have contributed to the game from behind the scenes. That’s why this year, two non-players are vying for a spot in the PHOF for their amazing work in making poker great again. The last time a non-poker player was inducted was back in 2014 when Jack McClelland was shortlisted.

This year Matt Savage and Mori Eskandani are once again on the list as they have contributed extensively to the poker world in their own ways. Savage is known world-wide for running the World Poker Tour and setting the standard for poker tournament rules across the world.

Eskandani is in another playing field of his own and is largely credited for bringing the poker world to a larger audience. As the producer and owner of Poker PROductions, he has produced top poker content including shows like High Stakes Poker, Poker After Dark, Face the Ace and National Heads-Up Poker Championship. Currently, he is also producing the WSOP content for ESPN and PokerGO.
