This month of May is particularly interesting on a cultural level, it includes the Istanbul jazz festival organized by the Zorlu center, you will also find some outdoor festivals, but also the festival of photography, exhibitions and the end of the football season that will be unbelievable! May 1 – Kaan Tangöze: Kaan Tangöze, the singer of Duman, Turkey’s best-known rock band, will be solo on the stage of the Kadikoy Sahne.
May 2 – Madeleine Peyroux: the American jazz singer is one of the most prestigious singers of her generation, her voice slightly hoarse, both nonchalant and intimate, is reminiscent of that of Billie Holiday. In Zorlu PSM.
May 2 – Dead Combo: mixing melodious Portuguese folk music Fado, Ennio Morricone’s Spaghetti Western compositions, one of the most famous musicians of twentieth century cinema, avant-garde jazz, folk, blues and musical elements with a twist African, Dead Combo, the group formed in 200, will be in Zorlu PSM.
May 3 – Morcheeba: a journey of regeneration filled with passion led by the charismatic singer Sky Edwards. Morcheeba debuted in London in the 1990s, at a time when hurricane Trip Hop had changed the course of popular music by mixing various musical genres such as soul, dub, ambient, hip hop and the breakbeat. He will be at Zorlu PSM.
May 3 – Teoman: the singer Teoman is one of the most important voices of the Turkish rock music, he will be performing at DasDas.
May 3 – Kikagaku Moyo: the Japanese group perfectly combining psychedelic rock and traditional Indian melodies as well as acid-folk is Salon IKSV!
May 4 – Dolu Kadehi Ters Tut: emerging artists from the Turkish alternative music scene will give a concert at IF Beşiktaş.
May 8 – Arthur H: the famous French musician will be in Istanbul with his album “Amour chien fou!” in Dada Salon Kabarett, an extraordinary showroom by Okan Bayülgen, a Turkish star host.
May 9 – Portico Quartet: nominated for the Mercury Prize with their first album, the group based in London stages the jazz of the future at %100 Studio.
May 9 – İlhan Erşahin: often seen as one of the best Turkish saxophonists, Ilhan Erşahin is also a jazz ambassador in the world, he owns two jazz clubs, Nublu, one in New York and one in Istanbul. He will be in concert nominated for the Mercury Prize with their first album, the group based in London will stage the jazz of the future at Zorlu PSM as part of the jazz festival.
May 9 – Myrkur: Folkesange – Zorlu Platinum: the Danish black metal band Myrkur will perform at Turkcell Platinum Stageon May 9! Danish musician and actress Amelie Brunn has released 3 albums (including one live), 2 EP and 6 singles, with her black metal / dark folk project Myrkur, which she launched in 2014.
May 9 – Christian Löffler (Live): he is one of the most prominent musicians in experimental techno in recent years … Leading German musician, producer and DJ Christian Löffler uses his exceptional talent to stimulate feelings and create unprecedented soundscapes. He will be at %100 Studio.
May 10 – Adamlar – Dorock XL Kadıköy: Adamlar is a band that mixes different genres such as hip-hop, blues and rock with Turkish tunes, he will be in concert at Dorock XLin Kadıköy.
May 10 – Maceo Plex: the Cuban star of electro, the famous Maceo Plex will be behind the turntables of Zorlu PSM!

May 11 – Papooz: the Parisian group of “tropical garage” composed of Ulysse Cotin and Armand Penicaut associates the palm fragrances of tropical climates with the aesthetics of the garage in their music. They will be at Salon IKSV.

July 6 – R+R = Now: it’s an American group of 6 musicians founded by Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin. The two men contributed to the music of Quincy Jones, Kendrick Lamar, Common, Kanye West, Mos Def and Q-Tip, just to name a few, and they partnered with jazz trumpet player Christian Scott, bassist Derrick Hodge and drummer Justin Tyson and multi-instrumentalist Taylor McFerrin to form R + R = NOW, an influential group of several musical genres, including jazz, soul, R & B and hip-hop . This month of June 2018 is much quieter than usual for several reasons, firstly it is the month of Ramadan in Turkey, and although it does not change much in everyday life, the organizers prefer to put the big events before or after, especially because at the end of Ramadan it’s the official holiday for the Turks and Istanbul will be completely empty between the 14th and the 17th of June. Then there is the early election on June 24 and all Turkey is passionate about the outcome of the election. Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) under the sponsorship of E.C.A, the festival began Wednesday, May 23 at the Lütfi Kırdar Convention and Exhibition Center. Suma Beach was created in 2013 by the merger between Wake Up Call and Sumahan, a very avant-garde space in Karaköy with music studios, offices and apartments, where everything is done for young entrepreneurs to meet. It is in this spirit that was imagined the little paradise of Suma Beach on the shores of the Black Sea. Organized by the Istanbul Culture and Arts Foundation (IKSV) and sponsored by Garanti Bank, the Istanbul Jazz Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2018.
The 25th Istanbul Jazz Festival, with more than 250 Turkish and international musicians, will present around 50 concerts in 27 venues and is preparing to turn Istanbul into a jazz city between June 26 and July 17, 2018.

April 26, 27, 28 – Altin Gün: released in May 2017 on the Swiss label Bongo Joe, their first single pays tribute to the seething Istanbul scene of the 70s, which merged the vague Western psyche and the traditional music of Turkey. The group is currently preparing the release of its second album, Gece, on April 26. We will meet Altın Gün at the Salon on April 26th, 27th and 28th to listen to the songs of their last live album before everyone else and enjoy three consecutive nights of extremely enjoyable music. February 15 to 25 – Istanbul Independent Film Festival: the 18th edition of the independent film festival in Istanbul will be held for 10 days, from February 15 to 25, and the films will be screened in several cinemas throughout the city. For more info: Istanbul Independent Film Festival
April 5 to 16 – Istanbul Film Festival:the 38th edition of the Istanbul Film Festival invites film lovers from April 5 to 16 to discover a selection of local and international films in competition this year. April 22nd to 28th –TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup 2019: WTA Tennis Tournament, (www.istcup.net) , TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open, the biggest international tennis tournament in Turkey starts this April 22! Many stars have responded and the tournament is attracting more and more tennis fans from year to year.
April 23 – National Sovereignty and Children’s Day (holiday): the 23rd of April in Turkey it is the children’s festival, many people go to lay wreaths on the monuments of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the Turkish Republic. The largest ceremony takes place at the Ataturk Mausoleum in Ankara. Because Atatürk dedicated the Turkish Republic to children, Turkish schoolchildren sit in Parliament for the day and symbolically govern the country. They elect a president who then addresses the country on national television. Children’s festivals are held throughout the country. The state-run Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) brings children between the ages of 8 and 14 from different countries of the world to Turkey. These children spend a week in Turkish families and participate in children’s festivals that end with a gala on April 23rd.
April 28th – Orthodox Easter: the Christians of Istanbul are predominantly Orthodox and Easter is without doubt their most important religious holiday. Therefore, on Orthodox Easter Sunday religious events are expected throughout the city, including the Patriarchate of Constantinople located in Fener!
May 1 – Labor Day: May 1st in Turkey, as in a large part of the world is Labor Day. Taksim Square has always been the scene of major demonstrations and this date has an important symbolic meaning because on May 1, 1977, 37 people lost their lives after unidentified fire on the demonstrators. Protests and rallies in Taksim Square were then banned. Despite the ban, thousands of protesters try to get there every year and clashes with the police take place. It will be therefore wise to avoid the area of Taksim during this day, from 9am to 6pm..
May 5 to June 3 – Ramadan: the month of Ramadan in Istanbul is a month of spirituality for practicing Muslims. The purpose of the fast is to purify the body and the soul and it lasts a month. That said, it’s not a completely dead month. Museums, restaurants, bars, clubs remain open and concerts, festivals and other events continue to take place throughout the city during the whole month of Ramadan. It is also a month of sharing and you can enjoy the event to break the fast with locals in many parks in the city. For more info contact us.
May 19 – Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day: the Turkish commemorate the founder of the Turkish Republic, it is a holiday and many sports events and closures are expected. In addition to paying tribute to Atatürk parades as well as sporting events are held across the country.

June 3 to 6 – End of Ramadan: it is called Bayram in Turkish and Eid el-Fitr in Arabic, this is a 3-day festival that’s celebrated every year at the end of the fast month of Ramadan. A bit like Christmas for a Christian, it’s an opportunity to visit family members. Local life will therefore slow down although it is only the first day that closures are expected for museums. Administrations and many restaurants and shops will be closed for the duration of Bayram.
June 14 to 19 – Cappadox Festival: the music, culture and food festival of Cappadox was organized for the first time in 2015 in the magical and lunar landscapes of Cappadocia and offers an experience not to be missed with a compendium of music, contemporary art, gastronomy and outdoor activities. July 15 – Democracy and National Unity Day: the murderous coup attempt of July 15, 2016 was officially declared an holiday and a series of commemorative events will be held throughout Turkey.
End of June – mid-July (3 weeks) – Istanbul Jazz Festival: for its 26th edition, the 2019 Istanbul Jazz Festival will run from the end of June until mid-July, and will bring together thousands of people and musical styles that go beyond jazz (rock, pop, Reggae, new age). July 19 to 21 – Bosphorus Cross Continental Swim (swimming across the Bosphorus): it is certainly the most famous swimming race in Turkey. Every year since 1989, in Istanbul, we attend an impressive show: the cross continental swimming race. It consists of crossing the Bosphorus by swimming, organized by the Turkish Olympic Committee. As the only international cross continental swimming competition, it brings swimmers from all over the world together on a 6.5 km course, from Kanlıca on the Asian side of Istanbul to Kuruçeşme Cemil Topuzlu Park on the European side. July 19 to 21 – Bozcaada Jazz Festival: Bozcaada is a small island in the Aegean Sea, beautiful because very wild and you have many activities on site like scuba diving, beach, walk around on a scooter or on foot but especially taste the Corvus wines which are considered as one of the best Turkish wines. In addition to that the food on the island is succulent, all the small taverns of the main village offer fresh and well prepared products at a medium price. August 10 to 14 – Feast of Sacrifice (Kurban Bayramı): about 2 months after the end of Ramadan, a second important religious festival takes place in Istanbul and Turkey. This is the festival of the Sacrifice, Kurban Bayramı in Turkish, which is characterized by 4 holidays. During this period, administrations, many shops and most businesses are closed. As with the eid after Ramadan, many Istanbul residents return to their families throughout Turkey. However, apart from the Grand Bazaar, which usually closes for a few days during this period, the main tourist attractions are still open to the public. This year the Feast of Sacrifice will take place from August 11 to 14.
August 30 – Victory Day: the Victory Day (Zafer Bayramı) commemorates the victory of the Turkish forces over the Greek armies in 1922. Military parades are organized throughout the country. Apart from the administrations, all tourist sites remain open on August 30th.
September 14 to November 10 – Istanbul Biennial: it is one of the most famous international contemporary art biennials: https://bienal.iksv.org/en. The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and the Arts (IKSV) has been organizing the Istanbul Biennial since 1987. Considered one of the most prestigious biennials alongside Venice, São Paolo and Sydney, the Istanbul Biennial has unveiled its “Seventh Continent” title for its 16th edition and is already one of the most important artistic events of 2019.
October 29 – Republic Day: the last holiday of the year is October 29, the Republic Day. Indeed, the Republic of Turkey was established on October 29, 1923. During this day, a large number of Turkish flags float in all districts of Istanbul and fireworks can be seen on the Bosphorus.
November 3 – Istanbul’s Marathon: the Istanbul Intercontinental Marathon (Avrasya Maratonu) or simply the Istanbul Marathon, is the only one in the world to be run on two continents. December 7 to 17 – Rumi Festival (whirling dervishes) in Konya: the dance of whirling dervishes is a form of active meditation, of Sufi origin. It is still widely practiced in many countries, especially in Turkey, where it has its roots in the Mevlevi order, inspired by the great mystic poet Mevlânâ Celaleddin Rûmi. December 13 to 20 – Istanbul Short Film Festival: International Short Film Festival of Istanbul is the oldest and most experienced international short film festival in Turkey. Adapted from Aljvide Lindqvist’s successful novel and the script from Aljvide Lindqvist’s “Let The Right One In,” this is an exciting new piece that opens its curtains at the Zorlu PSM. Adapted for the first time by Jack Thorne at the Royal Court Theater in London, the play was quickly acclaimed by critics.
“Let The Right One In” is the story of Oskar and Elias, two children who bear the burden of being excluded. Oskar tries to face intimidation while Elias, the mysterious neighbor of Oskar, leads an endless life stuck in the same age. This terrifying and touching love story in a neighborhood stuck in the shadow of continuous juvenile murders brings together Atakan Akarsu, Begum Akkaya, Selcuk Borak, Baran Can Eraslan, Uygar Özçelik, Meriç Rakalar, Irin Kılavuz Sevinç, Tan Tanger on the scene of the Zorlu PSM.

Between the windows decorated for Christmas (even though Turkish people don’t celebrate it) and the happy atmosphere of the new year, there are many things happening across the city. December 5 – Karsu Plays Atlantic Record: the indie-pop Turkish diva, Karsu, will be at the Caddebostan Cultural Center, performing the iconic songs of the Atlantic Record of jazz and blues. The founder, Ahmet Ertegün, of Turkish origin, was one of the founders of the label during the oppressive era of “black music”. Ahmet has been showcasing talent since the creation of Atlantic Records (1947), such as Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Bee Gees, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and Cher.
