Struggling to get traffic to your blog but nothing seems to work after trying different tactics? Then, It’s time to try the Skyscraper Technique.

In 2015, Brian Dean of backlinko.com revealed a strategy he used to boost his traffic up to 110% in 14 days. And he called it “the Skyscraper Technique”.

Ever since then, many bloggers/marketers have been using the same technique to drive even more traffic to their sites regardless of the size of their company. Some replicated the strategy with great success, While others achieved less‐than‐desirable results.

Does this technique really work?

Well, it does, and it does not. Depending on your approach.

Today I’ll explain how to use the Skyscraper Technique to skyrocket your website traffic by build links and improving your Ranking. I’ll also share some tips on how you can improve your chances of success.

What is the Skyscraper Technique?

The Skyscraper technique is all about finding the most popular contents within your niche, creating a better version of it, and therefore getting backlinks both naturally and after reaching out to the right people.

Fortunately, it is something you can do on your own, or with your team, without hiring an engineer.

Here is how it works…

  1. Find a popular piece of content with lots of backlinks but related to your niche ;
  2. Write a Content that will be way better than that;
  3. Ask those linking to the original piece to link to your superior content instead.

Simple, right?

Good, let’s see how we can execute the Skyscraper Technique.

In 2017, I tested the Skyscraper Technique on a brand new site, campuxtra.com (now defunct). This was a site dedicated to helping students throughout their stay in high-school.

I sent 200 emails and obtained 19 links (Pretty good!).

In addition, I picked up a few links from Reddit and other local blogs I did not reach out to.

Here is how I did it…

#1. Find Link Worthy contents related to your niche.

When I started, the first thing I did was to conduct research using buzzsumo. I used this tool because I was so familiar with it.

So, I came across a post at mycollegeadvice.org and decided to start with it. Because according to Site Explorer, this post has generated a total of 519 links from 186 domains. That was a huge number of backlinks!

I started to ask myself how I can get such links genuinely?

Then I remembered what my mentor has thought me!

“you need to do what your higher competitors are doing, even better!” So I had to get more serious. 

Other tools I used together with Buzzsumo to Find Link Worthy contents
  • semrush – Analyse what content performs better for any topic.
  • Moz’s Link Explorer – Conduct link analysis, competitive research and use link building tools to see what’s performing well.
  • Google News – You can search using keywords to find out what stories are performing best.
  • Visual.ly – A great tool for finding well performing visual content.
#2. Write better and more valuable content.

Remember what they say; Content is the Key!

When I came across the content I wanted to beat, I had to revamp it. Already, I had a list of ideas. I just have to rework them into something new, better and more thorough.

I wrote my own version of the same content focusing on the following:

  • Length: If the post lists 20 tips, beat it by listing more (for example, 70 tips).
  • Freshness: Check to see if the article is outdated. Update it with newer images, screenshots, information, etc.;
  • Design: Content isn’t just about the words; its visual appeal matters too. Make sure the design stands out;
  • Depth: Don’t just list things out. Fill in the details and make it actionable

Advance tip: you need to make it clear to Google that your piece is better. That means focusing on the things Google will look for. Page speed and content length can be measured.

#3. Reach out to the Right people

Find out who is interested in linking or promoting your stuff to get more rewards from your content. How can you find someone who is interested in sharing your blog posts?

You can just head over to Buzzsumo and enter the keywords you used on your blog posts to find out who shared the similar contents in your niche.

You can also use Ahrefs to find out the contact details of the people who linked to the content you are inspired from Buzzsumo or Open Site Explorer.

By using Ahrefs, you can easily download the contact details in either CSV or PDF form and copy them into a spreadsheet and remove all the unwanted pages like forums, directories etc.

Once you have the “list of targeted people email addresses”, you can then start pitching them about your piece of content.

I noticed that you linked to one of my favourite articles — [Article Title]
Just wanted to give you a heads up that I created a similar. It’s like [Name of the article], but more thorough and up to date: [URL]

And that’s it! After you get the replies, don’t forget to send a “thank you” note and update your backlinks and traffic to check the results in a month or two.

Setting up a perfect Internal Linking Strategy

Correctly linking your pages together helps search engines understand the relevance of pages and the relationship between them. So, while trying to build our own internal linking strategy, it is important that you focus on the site structure.

#1 Create more links to your most important contents.

Here is the thing, if you want to tell Google about the most important contents of your website, you need to add more links pointing to them.

Search engines do not only rely on sitemaps to discover all your pages, links are also very useful!

When crawling a page, crawlers are programmed to follow any link found on a page as long as they are accessible!

#2 All image link should have "alt" attribute

In images, Alt attributes acts like anchor text for text links — so it's another opportunity to send a ranking signal to search engines.

#3 Use Keywords in Anchor text

The use of keywords in anchor text is yet another measure you can implement to improve keyword rankings. Internal links act like backlinks, so using relevant terms in their anchors is a free and simple way to boost topical relevance.

#4 Add a related post section

There are many plugins and modules that add complete related posts sections to your posts. If you use one, we recommend testing whether the related posts actually are related posts. If you’re not sure, linking to posts manually is probably best.

#5 Add navigational links

Make your cornerstone content more authoritative by placing links that points to them from the homepage or the top navigation menu.

You should do this with the posts and pages that are most important to your business. This will give these posts or pages a lot of link value and makes them stronger before search engines.


Without links, your content will not obtain a high rank! But With a good internal linking strategy, you can show which content is related and which of your articles are most informative and valuable.

2. analyze your competitors:

Actually, I've used so many tools to spy on competitors analysis, but the truth about it is that SEMrush pose to be more accurate than every other tool I've used in the past.

While spying on your competitors, SEMrush will help you have a look at their;

  1. Keywords – the keywords / keyphrase that your competitors are ranking for.

Would you like to see your contents rank number one for all your keywords? I'm sure you would, but do you really think it's that easy? Well, seven to eight years ago, it was really so easy.

In fact it was as easy as placing keywords multiple times on you content and see the results almost immediately! I wish is it that easy these days.

These days, SEO is becoming more difficult that it takes months or sometimes years to kick in. That's if at all you know what you are doing. But with these tips I am going to share with you here, you will be able to rank number one in Google for your keyword within a short period of time.

Google Ranking Tips to snatch the first spot on Google

Tip number 1: Write to beat your competitors!

There is competition in all space. your niche is probably more competitive, but how do you survive the pressure?

There are websites on the internet who are already ranking for the same keyword you are trying to rank for, the real truth? They are far higher than you on SERP. So, for you to push your site up to take over their spot on search result, your contents should be better than theirs.

Anytime you want to write a blog post, write more detailed content, Make your blog post longer (not shorter than 1000 words) while you focus on your points.

If you are writing on a similar topic with your competitor, try and hit more point but be sure you don't move out of the topic.

Another writing secret you should learn is making use of the words 'you', 'me', 'how', 'why' and 'i' as they make your post more conversational.

The more people find your post interactive, the more likely they will remain on your site.  Like we all know, Time on page contribute to page ranking! So, the more time people spend on your post, the more higher your chance for ranking.

How you can find the right topic to write on? 

Something, coming up with a topic would be challenging, it happens to me most times. But what do I do? I spy on my competitors!

I use tools like SEMrush and buzsumo to spy on my competitors and find out what post that drive them the most organic traffic, and them I write a better version of those posts.

For example,

If my competitor wrote a post on "10 rules of digital marketing", I will sit down and write a more improved version of that blog post. I would write "35 rules of online marketing"

After that what do I do? Use tools like a href to find out who is linking to their post, hit them up on email one after the other, telling them about my blog post. But in doing that, I don't make it look like I am begging for backlinks.

Example of email to send:

"hey Tom, 

I noticed you are linked to an article which is titled <title of article> on <link of content> which is awesome!

I have a similar post on my blog <link> which covers xyz that theirs doesn't cover.
Feel free to check it out, <your blog link>

<your name>"

Though people will ignore your email, but if 5 out of 100 people links to your blog post, it's a big win!

Tip number 2: Keyword research is very important

Search Engines uses keywords to understand what your content is all about.
Before you define any focus keyword, make sure you understand the search volume and competitive value of that keyword.

If a keyword search traffic is high and yet less competitive, it will be very easy to rank. Why? Because so many people aint targeting it yet!

But the more people target a particular keyword, it becomes more competitive and of course very hard to rank.

Which should I target? regular keywords or Long-tail keywords?

Long-tail keywords are much more specific than regular keywords, and they are very easy to rank for. Since there are not much people optimizing their website for such keywords.

If a customer type "Samsung smartphone" they probably want to explore different types of of smartphone from Samsung. No particular one in mind! But if they type "Cheep Samsung Galaxy Note 9 for sale" chances are high that they actually want to buy.

Tip number 3: Get Used To SEMrush

Semrush.com is a web based SEO software which I would recommend a hundred times. It analyses your website and show you what keywords you are already ranking for, monitor your site's and keywords performance etc.

Once you are done doing your keyword research, you can add in keywords and track their positions in all major search engines based on geographical location.

SEMrush is not only known for its SEO features, it extends it's capability to cover other prominent internet marketing channels which include:

  • paid advertising

A service which provides a range of features to help site owners strategize and manage their paid ad structures effectually.

  • Content marketing

which is also part of SEMrush’s full marketing stack. In addition to being the most critical search engine ranking factor, web content is also considered effective at lead generation and conversion.

  • Social signal

SEMrush also goes social by integrating social media marketing. You can schedule post, monitor social shares etc.

Tip number 4:  Improve website’s user experience and mobile friendliness.

According to a study on ranking factors by SEMrush, the top four ranking factors are website visits, time on site, pages per session, and bounce rate.

All four of those are directly related to the experience your website is providing your users.

It’s pretty simple: If your website is easy and enjoyable to use and offers valuable information, you’ll get more visitors, who will stay longer on your site and visit more pages, and that will improve your search rank.

In 2017, Google announced this switch to a “mobile-first index” which is geared towards the increasing number of searches on smartphones.

So you have to design SEO-friendly mobile websites with searches optimized for mobile first in order to maximize a healthy Google ranking and minimize bounce rates

Tip number 5:  Choose a niche and focus on it!

Not just about the ranking this time! If you want to succeed in SEO, you must understand the competitive landscape. as a beginner or a small business, you don't have to keep competing with large companies who have  a large marketing budget. because you can't beet them. instead choose a narrow niche and maintain it.

What i mean here is shifting the focus of your business from more general to more specific products or services. for example, instead of writing on every topic that interests you, choose a particular topic and get known with that topic.

If you are an affiliate marketer, choose one particular kind of product you would promote.

  • Copy-Paste on all social networks

Every social network should be treated separately! Don't copy the same text you posted on Facebook to twitter and then to LinkedIn. It is like speaking Chinese in Nigeria!

Do not forget that every social network has it's own custom, audience, type of content and language. LinkedIn for example has slightly more men than women while Pinterest on the other hand has more women than men. Facebook can tolerate more than 300 characters while twitter on the other hand cannot tolerate more than 140.

It is important that you post a fresh and unique content on every social media account your brand has and engaging with your followers on each platform. But instead of repeating messages word-for-word, you should be writing a new post each time.

  • Neglecting Negative feedback

When customers give a negative feedback, it means they are not satisfied with your service. So, why neglect that? You should see it as an opportunity to improve your brand.

Negative feedback is a customer's Honest opinion about his/her experience with your products / services. the more detailed the feedback, the easier for the brand to understand their product shortcomings. Customers who left a negative comment   expect you to take it so serious.

Try and communicate with the person who left the negative feedback, asking him/her where they find fault with your services and then, improve from there!

  • Relying too much on Automation

Social media is about people getting in contact with people! so, social account without human representation is not going anywhere around success. Do not always rely on Automation. When replying a comment, reply with with a message that personally addresses the person in question, and keep your emotions in check if any negative comment should come up.

If you're just automating a few curated posts during the week, then you should be fine. However, if you're automating every single post on your social media profile, using automated direct messaging, and relying on autoresponders, then you have a big problem.

  • Not investing in video adverts

In Social media marketing, videos plays a significant role in the purchasing decisions of consumers. There lies a big opportunity in this area and neglecting it is not a good idea. And one needn’t have to shell out huge cash to make compelling videos on social media! Most smartphones have great camera abilities, and creating candid videos are gaining in popularity.

Up to 10 billion people watch videos on Snapchat alone and about 500 million Facebook users watch videos on Facebook on daily basis. So, if you are mission on video advertising, you should have yourself to blame!

If you really want more and more traffic to your website, Publish more reasonably and informative blog posts so often. If your content is good enough, your readers are going to look forward to newly published content on your blog.

Provide your readers what they want by publishing as often as you can. Posting at least twice a week is usually Okay to establish a regular core of readers, and these readers are typically the ones who will form the core of your brand community. Without consistency, it’s difficult to build brand loyalty.

And again, Google likes fresh content! the consistent updates mean your site will be crawled on a regular basis, and visitors who become regular readers will spend a lot more time reading the content and staying on page.

Traffic Growth Hack #2. Guest Post On Authority websites.

People think Guest post is dead, but it's not! Writing guest posts on blogs with higher readership than yours will help readers to your website.

Here is now it works,

You write a guest post on "how to train a Dog" and you would like to discuss how Dogs likes human. if you have a blog post on Dog-man relationship on your website, you can quickly link to it.

When it comes to guest blogging, don’t let the fact that you are talking to a new audience deter you from the 'educational purpose' of business blogging.

The goal is to establish yourself as an authority figure in your field, introduce your name to a new audience and build a relationship with other bloggers or businesses.

How to write a perfect Guest post?

In case you have not done this before, there is a quick guide to write a guest post that will attract people to your blog

  1. Write a post, just as you normally would
  2. Add "Helpful Resources" section to your post (normally 2 - 3 resources) and make your blog the number one source.

People are lazy! No one want to read long and boring message even if they contain a lot of information. They just want to watch you show them, or hear you teach them.

Eight out of them searchers will rather click on Videos when they seek for information on how to solve a particular problem.

so, If you write a blog post on how to do anything, you should also make a demonstrative video on that, upload to YouTube and embed it on your blog post. With that you will get a lot of traffic from YouTube, and people will like to stick around.

Podcasts are also great tools  for sharing thoughts ad ideas. Do you ever wonder why Neil uses podcast more often on his blog (neilpatel.com)? that is because, Podcasts are highly engaging!

With the internet being filled with a huge number of written articles, Audio  information that attempt to engage visitors would receive even more attention.

Traffic Growth Hack #4. Rewrite Other Peoples Content

What do I mean by rewriting other people's content? Steal content from other people's blog and twist word by word?

Hell NO!

You will have to write a brand new content from the idea they already have.

This works like Magic! Use tools like ahref to Spy on your main competitors and see which post that drive them the most traffic, Write a better version of those posts and publish.

For example, If the post that drive them the most traffic is "10 ways to kill a cat" then you should write your own "25 ways to kill a cat quick"

After that, what next?

Reach out to other sites who's already linking to them and tell them about your new post. But don't make it look like you are asking for backlinks.

If 5 out of 10 of them decide to link to your site, you will get a lot of traffic from them.

So, how can quora help drive you traffic?

You are a blogger and you have areas where you are professional. If you are good enough in helping people in your area of professionalism, you can get a lot of referral traffic from quora.

Blogging is fun, until you notice no one stays upto five minuites when they land on your pages and then bounce.

Readers tend to leave your site once they don’t find solution to there problem. Even if you provide the solution they need, if your write-up is not clear enough, they will still bounce!

Just like writing an essay, blog posts requires some guidelines which I am going to share with you right now.

Why this guideline?

If you notice increase in bounce rate, that means people are not finding your articles helpful, or maybe, they fail to get the points you are trying to make. if that is the case, this guideline will put you through all DOs and DON’Ts of writing a blog post.

#1. Getting ready

Before you even think of writing a blog post, you should prepare for it right? Preparation is the first step of getting anything done. at this point, you should read more books and online articles related to the idea you want to share.

Join diffrent forums related to your niche and see what people are asking, see if you can help answer any question. If you will be able to answer upto 5 questions, then you are prepared and ready.

#2. Have your readers in mind

You are writing what the people will read, not robots! so, write something a student in secondary school can read and understand, except you are writing specifically for adults.

Don’t make your page too stuffy for readers, use not more than 5 lines in a paragraph, make your English simple and plain and hit the point at the right time!

#3. Use the words “U” and “I”

Let your readers feel like it’s a conversation between you and them. with that, they will like to wait and listen to you.

Tell them what worked for you and what they should do also, but in doing that, use a more conversational approach.

#4. Use Videos

Most people don’t like reading blog posts, they prefare to watch a video version of it. If you can, create a video tutorial on what your article is talking about and embed it on your post.
