If you’ve been reading TT for a while then you might recall that I usually don’t like to indulge in any beauty “treatments.” Getting pedicure is a torture for me- I’d rather do it myself. Cutting my hair is about the only thing I leave to the professional. I mean, that’s not for a lack of trying though, I did use to cut my own hair- I thank God I came to my senses, that’s all I’m going to say. I don’t really know what it is, but I just don’t like people touching me. Not sure if it’s the germaphobe in me, or if I’m just strange. I don’t care if it takes me 3 hours longer- I’d still rather do my own nails, brows, etc. Okay, so I did get my brows threaded on a regular basis, but then the only person I’d let touch my eyebrows moved out of state and I haven’t trusted anyone else since then. For me, it has to be nail art. At one point I owned around 100 nail polishes and would spend hours, every single weekend playing around with them. I had all kinds of tools and kits with glitter, dotting tools, color foils, rhinestones- you name it. I always found it very therapeutic and it was just “my thing” and something I was kind of known for. I loved “doing” my friends’ nails as well, but somehow always did a much better job when working on myself. Not to say I wasn’t determined though- I once spent an hour finishing my sister’s artsy manicure even after she fell asleep on my couch during the process. Sometimes, the commitments you make to yourself can be quite difficult to enforce. This is especially true if we’re talking about changing life-long habits. When it comes down to it, if you want to feel happier you have to learn to refocus your thoughts on positive things and aspects of your life. What do you focus on or think about, most of the time? If you feel worried or anxious, you’re probably thinking about something negative. If you feel unhappy, you’re probably focusing on things you don’t want to happen (or have happened). As you hold onto those thoughts, scenarios or events, you eventually start to see them as your “reality.” As you constantly replay them in your mind, you end up subconsciously accepting them.  The key to feeling happier is controlling that focus and not allowing those negative loops to take over. This is what we mean when we say that “happiness has to come from within.” A thought that’s very cliché, yes, but true nonetheless.
