Saturday, July 20 - Dover, Morris County
Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Dover

Narrated walking tours of historic areas of Downtown Dover are among the most popular events presented by the Dover Area Historical Society. All are welcome to join us on such a tour led by our museum curator, Rick Kelly, on Saturday beginning at 10:00 am at our Museum House, 55 W. Blackwell Street, Dover, NJ (next to the First Memorial Presbyterian Church) Rain or shine, wear comfortable shoes and rain gear or sunscreen as necessary. Parking in the lots behind the museum and church.

This year, Rick will show participants a new addition to our walking tour, the Pierson Block, which is 79-89 W. Blackwell Street. Constructed in 1887, the building is a rare remaining example of 19th century row house architecture. A viaduct, which was built in 1905 to protect from a dangerous rail crossing, blocks the view and many Doverites seldom notice this hidden treasure.

In addition to showing you the Pierson building, Rick will tell you about the Ulster Iron Works, Bassett Highway’s changes over the years, The Moller Opera House, The Dover Fire Department, The Dover Dogs, stop in front of the Dover Library to discuss the canal basin and visit some of our beautiful churches, with a final stop at the Story Poles before returning to the museum. The tour will last approximate 90 minutes to 2 hours. We hope can join us to hear some of Rick’s interesting stories about Dover in days past! For more information, visit www.dovernjhistory.org.

Saturday, July 6 - Lambertville, Hunterdon County
Lambertville Antique Quilt Exhibit

The Lambertville Historical Society will host a special exhibit of antique quilts at James Wilson Marshall House, featuring a lecture by expert Dana Balsamo.

In an intimate, historic setting, the exhibit will showcase rarely displayed quilts, such as the 1843 sampler “Dilts Quilt” that includes many hand-signed ink and stamped signatures and small pictures, the 1843 King’s Crown Friendship Quilt that includes many signatures from the Lambertville area, and the Friendship Star/Rittenhouse Marriage Quilt circa 1852. For the first time, the Victorian linen “splasher” (hand towel) made for Ashbel Russell Welch by his mother will be displayed, accompanied by documentation tracing ancestry to Senator John Lambert.

In her lecture, Balsamo will discuss and examine quilts of Lambertville and Hunterdon County, as well as highlights from her private collection, on Saturday from 1:00 - 2:00 pm, and reprise the same presentation on July 13 from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. Due to limited space for the lecture, RSVP is required four days in advance of either date, via email to info@lambertvillehistoricalsociety.org.

The general quilt exhibit will be open to the public over two weekends: July 6 and July 7 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, and again July 13 and July 14 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. The James Wilson Marshall House, built in 1816 and the childhood home of the discoverer of gold in California, is located at 60 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ.
