With the focus today on being fit, a great many of us will choose to do some kind of activity to feel and look better. With this comes a whole range of sports or fitness regimes we can choose from and if you are like me, the first accessory I grab when going outdoors are my sunglasses! Keep reading to find out more about Oakley interchangeable lenses.
Now not only can we choose the brand but we can look for ones that have interchangeable lenses. Why? The answer is simple: different sports or activities require different lenses because of the weather conditions or environments we place ourselves in. Sunglass lenses for skiing in the winter require a different color lens to that when going out for a game of golf.
In general, most brands will give you the option of purchasing more than one type of lens, one for bright days and days when it is overcast or the light is dull. Personally, I like to check that one set of lenses is mirrored as they are great in reducing glare. However there are so many other characteristics we need to consider; do they come with a prescription option and do they allow us to vary the nose pads so they sit better on our face and won’t fall off during intensive activity.
So with so many models to choose from let’s look at Oakley’s range in this highly competitive market that have Oakley interchangeable lenses. They currently have 2 models that I believe are some of the best out there; these are the Flak Jacket 2.0 XL and the Radarlock Path.
Both glasses come with the HDO or High Definition Optics technology that has been tested to surpass the American National Standard and include Oakley interchangeable lenses. The Radarlock Path incorporate the Switchlock Technology that allows for easy lens interchange. This is a major reason why it is the number one choice for professional cyclists where worrying about your vision is the last thing they need to worry about.
The Flak Jacket 2.0 XL is another wrap around style that is designed for men. Like the Radarlock Path they are made from O Matter, which is a light weight patented material that is superior to other brands with its level of durability.
The attention to small detail by Oakley is never more evident than their incorporating of ventilation in the temple and lens areas that reduces fogging. Both glasses have 100% UVA, UVB and UVC protection that ensures that getting “fit” doesn’t mean developing eye damage. Oakley gives you a choice between the Fire and Black Iridium lens colors among others, with options of a mirrored coating and polarizing characteristics.
They both have the 3 point fit technology, that give a great snug fit without the soreness that can develop after long term wearing.
So why choose the above over the other competitors? Let me tell you that Oakley have been around since 1975 when James Jannard spent $300 bucks to set up shop. In that time they continue to develop their technology to stay in front of the opposition even though they could easily rest on their “laurels”. You can read more about the history of Oakley here.
I am of mature age and have owned around 10 pairs of Oakleys over the years, simply because after a few beers I lose or sit on them :0 They get my thumbs up!
What’s the big hype about polarized lenses? They always seem to be sold at a premium when compared to the non-polarized choice. Is this additional cost worth it?
Well, after personally wearing a variety of lenses throughout my life, both polarized and non, I’ve noticed a subtle difference between the two. At first, I always chose the non-polarized option thinking that they were all I needed. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon a pair of black polarized Flak Jackets that caught my eye until I gave them a test drive, literally.
When looking at the polarized and non-polarized lenses I noticed that they were almost identical. The Oakley polarized lenses did inscribe “Polarized” in the bottom corner of one of the lenses. “There’s got to be more then this, right?”, I thought. It wasn’t until later that day that I wore them while driving to the grocery store that I began to see subtle differences.
First, while driving on a sunny day the glare on the road was less with the polarized lenses. This is because they eliminated the sunlight that reflects off the street and travels back up horizontally that will eventually hit your eyes and cause eye fatigue. This was huge! I had always had issues with my eyes being strained and really didn’t think twice about it until now! Read more on the importance of wearing sunglasses.
Second, it felt like my vision had more clarity. It was like the first time I had experienced viewing a high-definition television while watching a golf tournament. I could see the blades of grass swaying in the wind and it was vivid green. I was viewing the world in a whole new set of eyes! View our selection of sunglasses with golf lenses.
To this day I continue to wear Oakley polarized lenses. The premium in cost is well worth it for the benefits received!
Shady Rays is an up and coming manufacturer of lifestyle sunglasses. Their motto “Live Hard. We Got You” is seen all throughout the way they do business as shown in this article.
In 2012, owner Chris Ratterman started Shady Rays in his basement and has since expanded to a centralized warehouse located in Lexington, KY.
How is Shady Rays Different than other Sunglasses Manufacturers?
Shady Rays sets itself apart from the competition since it is a smaller company innovating next-generation eyewear.
The very foundation of this eyewear company is shown through their acts of good-will. A donation of 11 meals are given to hungry Americans for every pair that is ordered through the nonprofit project “Feeding America”.
The warranty/replacement program is one of the best programs I’ve seen out there! If you lose or break your shades they will provide you with a new pair after paying the nominal shipping charge of $8.89 if you live within the United States. As always, they also warranty all sunglasses from manufacturing defects.
How is the Quality of Shady Rays Sunglasses?
Each pair of sunglasses include high-quality shatter-resistant lenses that have 100% UV protection.
Polarized lenses are included for a majority of the styles and are affordably priced.
When holding the pair in your hands you’ll notice the quality craftsmanship of the frame including the sturdy metal hinges.
Shady Rays has released only a few styles of shades which allows them to focus on designing the best possible sunglass possible.
The original ones are worn out looking and dirty. All those years of use and abuse are sure to show on the Oakley earsocks. Bring life back to your Oakleys by purchasing replacement earsocks and nosepads instead of purchasing a new pair.
Customize your look! Have a favorite sports team? Change the Oakley earsocks and nosepads to match the color of your favorite sports team. There’s no better way to show your team spirit
Give some personality to your Oakley sunglasses. Replacing your Oakley ear rubbers can give you the ability to show your personality through your sunglasses. Turn that standard looking off the shelf piece of eyewear into an extension of yourself.
A majority of the direct contact that the Flak Jacket or Half Jacket have with you are through the earsocks and nosepads. Oakley calls this the Oakley 3-Point fit. The 3 points are the bridge of the nose and the 2 temples. These rubber pieces are made of Oakleys patented Unobtainium which is a material that increases grip preventing them from slipping when contact is made with your sweat.
What you'll need to replace the earsocks
Soapy water, towel, and patience!
Removing old earsocks and nosepads
For all Oakley sunglasses that have rubber pieces on the upper part of the arm next to the hinge such as on the flak jacket you will need to remove the arm from the frame. From personal experience this is not as easy as all of the other reviews online seem to indicate. It takes great patience and persistence. Remember that Oakley frames are made of O Matter which is very durable when put under stress.
The key in removing the arm is to twist it out. Do not pull on it. The arm is held in by 2 knobs. One on the top and one on the bottom as shown below.
The removal of the worn out earsocks and nosepads is next. The ear socks should slide right off and if not dip the end in the soapy water. The nosepads should slide off relatively easy.
Installing new earsocks
Before installing the new replacement Oakley socks make sure that they are in the correct orientation. If needed, put the piece up next to the frame to confirm it is correct as shown below.
When installing the earsocks you'll need to dip the ends in soapy water. This will help glide the new sock on. You can also use hand sanitizer but I would not recommend soap directly. You'll have to push the earsock down the arm stem and over the bulb at the end.
Sliding the rubber piece on the other end of the arm is pretty simple as shown below.
Installing new nosepads.
The frame has a hook-like feature that locks inside the nosepad. Once sliding one of the prongs of the hook in the nosepad then you'll need to push the nosepad so the other hook slides in. It will slide in relatively pretty easy.
Do you fish off-shore? A darker lens with a very heavy mirror is important for off-shore fishing because the light reflecting off the open ocean can be extremely intense. While a gray base with a blue mirror is synonymous across many brands of fishing sunglasses, you can’t go wrong with the Oakley deep blue iridium polarized lenses. Not only will the lens color provide ample protection, superior contrast and eliminate glare better than you’d except, but these are also extremely durable in the harsh conditions off shore.
There’s nothing more beautiful than being active outdoors on a sunny day with bright blue skies and that gorgeous feeling of the rays on your skin, toasty, warm and delicious. It is however vital that we wear sunglasses, all year round, to protect our eyes from the harmful rays of the sun, reduce the glare, prevent sunburn and of course look and feel good.

A little history. Did you know that Oakley was started by Jim Jannard in 1975 by selling motorcycle grips out of the back of his car trunk. Hard to believe that he didn’t start by selling sunglasses.
The first eyewear created by Oakley was in 1980 and was the Goggle. These rainbow strapped googles were for moto-cross (MX) use. The first sunglasses were sold in 1984 and were called the “Lights”. The popular M-Frames were released in 1990 and are still sold today!
The widely sold jacket line was released in 1994 with the Eye Jacket. These had a raised icon on the frame which became the standard for most sunglasses now.
In 2007 Oakley was bought out by Italian company Luxottica for a whopping $2.1 billion. Luxottica knew that adding Oakley to their portfolio would be a great addition so they actually paid more than what the company was worth.
