I'm Stacey a 25 year old Adventure Loving Makeup Artist from Christchurch New Zealand. I created my blog Originally called Painted Lips in December 2013, after feeling there was a gap in the market for honest feedback online, especially when it came to the Beauty & Fashion Industries.
Located about 1hr 15mins from Christchurch or 10mins from Cheviot you will find Tawanui Farm. A beautiful glamping layout, set amongst rolling farmland with incredible views. On offer is two super roomy Lotus Belle tents, a main hut and a very relaxing hot tub which is perfect for watching the sunset in.
Our stay at Tawanui was super enjoyable, we had perfect weather and really loved hanging out in the main area. Within this area is the kitchen, dining and shower/basin. The toilets are composting much like many other Canopy sites and are found a short walk away, so make sure you have a torch on hand.
This site would be so great for two small families holidaying together or a group of friends even a hens party! Your hosts offer ATV farm tours across their property - a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the many animals, or if your up for an adventure, give their Hurunui River Jet boating a try!
Although we were only at Tawanui for one night, we had the best time.. The tents have all the home comforts, the beds are cosy and nothing quite beats waking up to bird song. There is cellphone reception and a charging port in the main hut if needed but to be honest it’s nice to act as if your out of service. Take the oppourtunity to just be still and appreciate all that surrounds you.
Thank you for having us Tawanui Farm we can’t wait to come back again soon x
If there’s one thing I have struggled with often on my journey of being self employed, it’s saying No. I’d over commit myself to so many events, meetings and catchups all too often. By adding that to my already crazy workload, it left me with zero time for me to do anything non work related .. yano important things like taking a moment to have a catchup drink with friends LOL
2019 has already been a year for so many incredible events and product launches, both here and in the North Island. In previous years I have 100% been a yes man, even though I actually find some events a little daunting going to on my own. I’ve always felt like It was almost rude of me to not show face - even if it was costing me out of my own wallet to attend.
Over the last 5 years I’ve made a real commitment to go to Auckland every 6-8weeks for business catch ups. This has been really good for me and has definetly helped lesson the pressures of not being able to attend everything that comes into my inbox.
But it wasn’t until the end of last year, that I realised that I just can’t sustain so many commitments and now I really need to prioritise what it is im attending and if it will give back to me in anyway. Although i totally appreciate networking with others within your industry, it’s actually not going to benefit me if everytime it’s just businesses wanting me to do “more work” for “exposure” so to speak.
For example most events will ask you to post during your time, which of course then adds onto the workload and delays other things you may have in your lineup - these might actually be paying jobs your delaying which isn’t a good move . This is exactly where I was running into problems. .
When running a business sometimes you have to make tough calls and you have to put aside personal feelings to professional, thats just all part of the ride. For instance this week, I have been asked to attend a really cool yoga morning and am currently trying to juggle things on that date, so I can attend. But sometimes you do just have to understand what will be will be and sometimes things might not always work in your favour.
I think my biggest advice for anyone new to business is to know your worth from early on. Don’t feel like you owe anyone anything, or you will end up in the situation I have been in for the last few years. Being strong and learning to prioritise is helping to lesson the weight on my shoulders, and I know that If i can’t make a few event’s its actually not going to effect my business in anyway.
It’s normal to feel guilty or feel the fomo of not being where it seems like everyone else is, but saying No just has to be done and at the end of the day you have to do whats right for not only your business but also your own own peace of mind. Finding that work life balance is probably the hardest task and im well on my way to making sure I find that perfect balance to enjoy life at full speed in all avenues again.
Go easy on yourself, running a business properly is hard, but your not superman and you cannot be everywhere at once - and lets be honest nothing worth it ever comes easy right!
For some you may just scroll through this post without a second thought, but for alot of others I know you will most likely share some of my thoughts and feelings. It’s taken a long time for me to finish this off, I don’t like to come across as a ranter or complainer, but I guess I’ve now reached a point where somethings got to give.
Since beginning my blog 7 years ago, I have had so many incredible oppourtunities come my way. I have met some really amazing people and worked alongside creatives who are extememly passionate about what they have to offer the world. I truly am beyond grateful for all of this, but like everything in life it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. In the last 18months especially, I have placed so much unneccessary pressure on myself that isn’t helping anyone.
The whole reason I began my social accounts was to share my love of an industry I am super passionate about, to show that when you love what you do, and work hard to achieve your dreams, life can be so rewarding - and honestly every stressful day has been so worth it. But I guess I have also kind of hidden the other side to it that has began effecting me alot as of late, and it’s taking a huge toll on the clarity of my mind.
I have tried my best to remain stern in my beliefs, I’m a pretty positive person but my one downfall is I care too much and if you have followed me for a while, then you will know im a bit of a lone surviver in the social world so to speak. I’m not a follower of trends, I’m not someone who looks at aligning with certain people for how they will benefit me, and most of all I have always remained really strong in not letting numbers rule my life as I think it’s really unhealthy to live that way.
But lately I’ve felt alot of hate towards a platform I use to absolutely adore. Adding that extra stress to already running a really demanding business, which is my main focus - I guess you would say it’s become all abit much. So it’s time for me to pull in the reigns and focus on real life things for now, the things that really make my soul happy.
I know with the times things change, but I just think theres alot of bullshit online these days, everything appears so easy and quite frankly it’s messing with my ability to continue my love of sharing online. One thing I have found there to be is so much falseness around what being “successful” really looks like, and the pressures that having your life figured out by the time you finish school is having on our younger generation.
Suddenly every tom dick and harry is a “successful business owner” after doing an online course or because they get X amount of likes. Even lately you would have noticed, it’s chats about engagement everywhere. Which yes are important, but im seeing it all the time! People are just so desperate for that comment or like just to be seen, and it’s just something I can’t deal with anymore. The need for validation and the loss of love and passion in people, has really got me fired up and I know it’s most likely only going to get worse before it gets better.
Instead of supporting just the pretty girls who look like models because you want them to reply to your comments, or the ones seen as local “celebs” we should be supporting and celebrating all people. Some of the people I look up to most are the Mums online who are stressed AF, have been through some really unfair and tough times with kids nagging at them 24/7. But some how they still wake up everyday, go to work and get shit done without social media crediting them. Where are their 10,000 followers, because they sure as hell deserve them.
So why is it that everything always comes back to the riches vs what feels like the rags? I guess this is where I have felt really stuck lately, I feel like I’m against the grain so much. I’m just your average looking 26 year old, with normal friends, a business that wasn’t an overnight success story but more of a 6 year plan. A life that unfiltered or filtered is what it is, with no other goal but to add value to lives where I can - whether thats through my use of a makeup brush, or a gentle smile.
There is so much behind a life online that I think goes un talked about, and so many feelings like mine that are left bottled up for fear of what others may think. Free products and hanging out at fancy events with well known peers, is not always what it’s cracked up to be, and I know so many content creators that avoid events for the anxiety even walking into the room gives them.
During my online career I have been bullied by people who had never even met me, had relationships where some will be your friend one moment, then the next they are ripping off your content to claim as their own, or suddenly your just not cool enough - even strangers name dropping me to get sent product all for the thought of “being known” . It’s honestly such a crazy world out there, and I so wish it was like the old days, where people genuinely had no other motive behind sharing their story’s, but to be kind and connect with others.
So before I pull things back and become a little quieter on your feeds for the next little while, I want you to take a really good look at how you are using social media and how much it’s taking over your life. I would love to see it return to a place where struggles are shared not for likes, but for more of a me too movement. That bad days and off weeks are seen as normal for everyone, and all lives are celebrated and supported because behind all of our screens, we are the same.
So theres a little update on where I’m at, she’s been a hell of a ride so far. I will still be using Instagram to connect and share especially on Stories, but it will be alot less than normal daily postings. Just while I unplug and focus on things beyond the squares. because one day Instagram may no longer be around and all I wish is to exist in lives far beyond that. I hope you all understand x
Below I have curated a list of some of the epic places we have been in both the North and South Island of our beautiful country New Zealand. I hope this list becomes your destination when you are wanting to add that little bit of something extra to your life.Being out in nature and actually appreciating how lucky we are to have such a stunning backyard is a feeling next to none. So before you go and book that overseas trip, head back here and check out some spots nearby that you may not of seen yet! I hope sharing our favourite places, sparks up the inner adventurer within you too! Please note we haven’t shared all of our spots as some we would like to remain untouched. I quite often find myself writing little notes left right and centre. From reminders to quotes and basically anything I think of that seems to resonate for that moment. With a New Year, it brings us new days to not only reflect, but to also do better. 2019 for me is shaped to be pretty crazy, a good crazy of course. But I wanted to hold myself accountable, so that when I have days where I feel like the weight of the world may be on my shoulders I can come back to this post, to take a deep breathe and remember the 19 things I shouldn’t let myself forget…
You are not a super human, don’t burn yourself out!
People pleasing helps no one, your happiness matters too.
Don’t forget to laugh, clap like a seal if you must but laughter truely does cure all!
Buy the new Spell collections - shopping soothes the soul duh!
Continue to look at the world with open eyes, don’t let the shadows of comparison or social media fog your journey - your worth more than that.
Never let anything cost you your peace, Good Vibes only remember!
Be kind and helpful to others, but also be careful not to give to much of your kindness to those who don’t return the favour.
Focus on the humans who actually give a shit about you all the time, not just when it’s convenient for their situation.
Chase more sunsets and reflect on how bloody lucky you are to be alive
Write down one thing EVERY single day that your grateful for.
Eat the potatoes, life is there to be lived all that matters is that your bloody happy.
Give more time to those in need, paying it forward gives good karma always.
Manifest the shit out of your life and make those dreams come true!!
Tell someone you love them every single day!
Spend more time being present and focusing on real human connections.
Keep putting more soul into creating a legacy for your brand, Be more, Do more - because nothing great ever happens overnight.
Fight for what’s right and let the light shine on things that need to be talked about.
Continue creating epic content for the awesome companies you align with, be more than just a social presence.
Every day you wake up, the very moment you open your eyes decide it will be a good day. All mountains have valleys in between and it’s totally normal if things don’t always go to plan. Everything serves a purpose in your life remember that …just let it happen and don’t forget to breathe. You got this <3
Its Mental Health Awareness week this week here in New Zealand, something that shouldn’t have just one week dedicated to it, but actually should be talked about every single damn day. There’s this real stigma around people being to proud to ask for help, well guess what stop being so fucking proud.
I’m sorry if you find my language offensive at all in this post, but this is a topic that really gets to me. I have lost quite a few people in my life to suicide over the last few years, all really amazing people, who each had an incredible gift to share with the world.
Some left behind partners and children, and all left behind Mums and Dads, Aunties, Cousins, Uncles and other family members who loved them dearly. They all shared one thing in common, they felt incredibly lost and alone in this world and that is the thing that breaks my heart the most.
When I think about how they must feel in their time of need, it gets me right in the soul. But it’s also why we should all work on being real with each other, normalise that it’s ok to not be perfect and to make mistakes because life isn’t smooth sailing for any of us and every single one of us knows that..
It’s time we open up about Mental Health and just be bloody decent humans. I’m actually sick of social media lately and it’s screwed up ways of trying to normalise such unrealistic bullshit. I think this is a huge factor in the suicide rates of our young, now being so high and it’s 100% Not ok!!!
The last two years of my online career, have become increasingly painful, as people are more in search of fame than they are of actually genuinely doing good by others.
I was chatting to multiple people today discussing how grateful we are to not of had Instagram in our lives growing up. Yes we still had bullying issues within our school years, but there wasn’t all this social pressure of comparing yourself to others every second of every day.
These days if your not pretty or instagram famous it makes you “not cool”, which is the biggest bullshit i have ever heard! Whoever talks that jargon needs to take a seat and really look at themselves in the mirror, EVERYONE is equal likes or no likes! - but also why are you making your life so dependant on social approval?! STOP NOW!!
Just this morning on my feed was an image of a girl with basically everything exposed captioned… when i was 5kgs heavier… im sorry but What?!?
Since when did our weight become anyones business
You do not need to expose yourself like that online to get noticed
I just don’t understand how this has become ok? It’s sending a really fucked up message to society that this is normal?
It makes me so sad that the current young gen are exposed to this life. The expectation that they can afford to eat out everyday in fancy cafes, wear designer clothing, have abs by not even exercising but by taking a “pill” or drinking a “tea”, go on luxury holidays, be a “girl boss” by being an “influencer”, drive fancy cars and are instantly the next Kim Kardashian of New Zealand if they get over 400 likes.
Sorry but the reality is…. eating out is expensive that life is not realistic at all and half the people you see doing that everyday have probably emailed cafes asking for a “collab”. The clothes are probably rented, and that “Girl Boss” well they are probably still living at home.
With zero expenses, wealthy parents and don’t actually know how many years of hardwork it takes to create and run a legitamate business and to go through the struggles of self employment. And all those “friends” they have, are normally people they align with because it will raise their online profile. Welcome to keeping it real in 2018!!!
My message to you if you struggle with comparison, or feeling like you don’t belong in this world is You absolutely belong here, you are loved so incredibly loved and you will do amazing in your life time. Do you know how? Just by being you!
Don’t fall into the trap of who you think you need to be by what you see online, manifest your own amazing bubble and focus on being the kind of human, people truly need in their life. Live a life with value, and people who truly love you and I promise you will be so much happier.
Everyone gets so caught up trying to be someone their not, or trying to please everyone else , even people who arent nice to them just to try and be cool. Meanwhile there are kind souls out there who would do anything for anyone else, but have never actually ever been asked if they are ok. These are the people we should pay attention to!!!
Be the person who smiles at strangers, tell your friends and family how much you appreciate and love them, do something random and kind for someone less fourtunate than you, because at the end of the day our days are numbered here on earth and as ive said before… no one will stand up at your funeral when your gone and say oh yeah i loved your selfies that got thousands of likes but you can bet your boots, they will talk about what you did for them and how it changed their life.
Be a bloody life changer for the sake of all of those who have gone before us, who really needed that kind of person and make an impact on others hearts not their eyes!
In honour of all those struggling or feeling shit about themselves in any way for whatever reason - I’m here for you, please never feel alone.
Homewares have no doubt become my new found obsession, since building our first home together at the end of last year. Our home is our haven, but deciding on how to style each room can be abit of a task.
This week we were sent in store to Adair’s located at Riccarton Mall here in Christchurch on abit of a shopping spree to tackle one of our remaining guest bedrooms that was yet to be styled. Everytime I walk into Adair’s im overwhelmed with all the options, so many ideas come flooding to my head, making it hard to resist the temptation of absolutely just going for it and walking out with the entire shop.
Our general style is quite boheme, inspired by earthy tones, texture, greenery and the odd pops of colour. This room we wanted to do something a little different whilst still maintaining the flow from the rest of the house. I have always loved the way blush works with natural tones, but Regan had always said im not having pink in the house LOL typical male response am I right?!
Well what do you know .. we walked out with the most beautiful peachy blush quilt and it looks incredible in the space!!! Because the quilt is quite a vibrant tone, we chose to accessorize with natural woods, soft toned throw and cushion, a little greenery and some wildflowers I had previously foraged for. We opted for these accessories because they are items that won’t go out of fashion and we can also change them up around the rest of our home.
Adair’s had such a great selection of items in store, especially with their beautiful new Spring collection sitting pretty and they also had an awesome sale on... just to throw that in the mix of making decisions even harder.
My favourite buy out of everything would have to be our artificial palm.I have searched high and low for one that doesn’t look too faux and has realistic texture to it and we finally found one!!. They also had so many great options of baskets for it to sit in, so I ended up walking away with two in typical stacey style, because I just could not make that decision to save myself.
Adair’s pricing is also really attractive, we have put off finishing our other remaining rooms in the past simply because it is quite pricey to set up and style an entire room. Adair’s also have a loyalty programme called Linen Lovers that provides you with great deals instore and online. I didn’t actually know this existed previously, so we signed up in store because lets be honest, this girl is all about the deals lol!
Our time spent in store was so much fun, the staff are great as always and the quality of all our items is incredible! Totally worth heading in store and grabbing yourself some beautiful bargains for your home.
You can recreate our look via the links below, hopefully this makes life a little easier for you if your interested in picking up any of these stunning pieces for yourself.
Set up on the cliffs above Woodpecker Bay 10mins from Punakaiki, hidden amongst the trees you will find The Hexagon. An old restored Astrologists home now owned by Jed.
Jed is a local from the West Coast who knows everything and anything about the surrounding areas. He purchased the property in the 90's and had it for quite some years before he decided to restore it into the magical little haven that it now is.
For those interested in staying at The Hexagon, you must have a sense of adventure as the hike up to the hut is steep and quite muddy in the Winter months so make sure you bring your gummies!! Jed kindly takes your baggage up on his quad bike, but there isn't enough room for everyone so enjoy your walk! LOL
The Hexagon has ocean views, nature surrounding it including some wild guests like Weka and Goats, oh and we also has a mouse pop in and say Hi which I wasn't all too thrilled about, but it made for great laughs. The hut is once again fully off the grid although it is solar powered for lighting and has a multi plug box available to charge your phone or laptop.
Taking your laptop is a good idea if you want to watch any movies, but if your looking to totally immerse yourself into the no technology lifestyle, there are lots of board games on hand. Whoever knew snap and snakes and ladders could get so competitive lol!
So let's talk more about what makes this place so amazing, The Hexagon is a beautiful one bedroom rustic style hut. Made from native timber that flows from the indoors through to the outside. Large windows and doors surround the room giving you beautiful views to wake to.
To keep you warm there is a small fire, and for all your cooking needs you just need to pop out the door to the outdoor kitchen and bathroom area complete with outdoor shower. You will find the compost toilet slightly off from the kitchen, up about 5 steps with full privacy but sorry folks its not a flushing toilet like your normally use to, but it's totally not bad to use at all!
One of our favourite things would have to be the outdoor bath, Jed the host kindly had the fire under it already going for us, so the water was super hot and ready to go. If you havent ever bathed under the stars you need to!!
This hut will always be special to us as we got Engaged whilst staying there, but there really is just something so peaceful and dreamy about the whole experience of the stay you have. So if your an adventure seeking couple, looking to emmerse yourself into all things wild and free then The Hexagon is totally for you.
Every day you wake up and you most likely check your phone then scroll your social media feeds..correct?
I’m guilty of doing the same, but about 6-8 months ago I pulled back the reigns and realised my life has so much more meaning, than letting myself be over run by social media. As a content creator for the last 5 years my job involves me being on my phone a lot, I also run a business which relies on social media and phone use to communicate with my clients, so in some way it’s an essential part of my daily living.
The thing is, it was having a huge impact on my mental health, I was constantly stressed, felt like I had so much to do all the time (still do), often felt like I wasn't good enough just being myself, and was feeling deflated that no matter what, I just couldn’t beat that damn instagram algorithm.
So one morning I wrote up a list of the things that made me sad and happy about social media. The biggest point for me was that I felt like this community that I use to love 3 or so years ago, had just suddenly become such a big world of unrealistic bullshit. Where people are all over the place with no clear message. One week it's socks the next it's vodka... *eyerolls
That day I unfollowed all the accounts that made me feel like crap, the ones that made me feel like I had to look or be a certain way and started connecting more with the accounts that lifted my spirits and inspired my soul. This was to remind me why it is I continue to share my life in squares.
I was chatting to a few of my creative friends who also live their life’s online, soon after I started making changes, they too just felt like they had so much to give but were being over crowded. Often this is by “pretty girls” who post a million selfies with their boobs out, only to be told how “hot” they are every day. Which is great for them if that’s what they are about, but then it got me thinking. As creators we have an audience and access to make such a difference in people’s lives, why are we not making the most of this?
If you are a fulltime creator, who earns a living weekly or monthly from social media, then chances are you have been given some incredible oppourtunites. But at the end of the day, we get those chances not just because of our content, but because of our audience. Why would you not want to give back to the people who support you the most- it just makes no sense to me?
Since I switched from producing only beauty content to following more of my life journey it has always been my mission to create content that adds value to your life, that inspires something within you to try new things or maybe even its as simple as having one of my posts make you smile on a crappy day. I also vowed to myself that atleast once per year, I would do what I could to raise money for a charity or help out in my community.
Focusing on this has also helped my own mind a lot more, sharing my passions without pressure, sharing moments via images that mean so much, pulling away from friendships that weren’t healthy and made me feel sad but most of all I have now seen that I have the ability to make an impact on others life’s, it's so easy to do and it has made such a difference in the way i now look at everything around me.
Social media has no doubt been one of the biggest causes of mental health issues in our younger generation, I hear it from my ball clients all the time. I wish I looked like her, I wish I could do that, I wish I was her friend. The thing is those girls with perfect skin have often edited their images, the girls who look like they are “popular” are often so lonely and only hang out with certain people to raise their social status.
So forget what you see online, focus on your life, and do what makes your soul shine. For me I find my peace in adventure, discovering new places and creating amazing memories with my loved ones. Sure I share some of these photos online, but I never go to a specific place just for the gram. It's so important to capture moments as they happen, that is where the magic truly lies.
Don't get me wrong, I most definitely still have my days where I just want to hit delete on my profile, where I want to unfollow the people who pretend to be nice all for a few likes and a little social approval but I’ve realised that’s just life and at the end of the day like my mum has always said to me, people soon see others true colours.
So I hope this little message from the heart, shows you that everyone you meet is fighting their own battle. Don’t be embarrassed to say some days I just can’t do life today, unfollow the pages that make you feel not good enough, and replace them with the people who know their truths.
Life is far too short to spend your time stressing about what people think of you, what you wear or who your friends with. Take a step back from those things and let yourself be free. Explore your passions, and for goodness sake chase your dreams! I don’t care if that sounds cheesy, I chased mine and am proof that the road no matter how bumpy - it is 110% worth it.
Make your life about waking up each day with a smile, working a job that makes you feel proud, but most of all it’s keeping the humans close that let you love who you are and the journey your on, who celebrate your success with you not against you, because they are the ones that genuinely matter.
Trust the timing of your life, and focus on those Good Vibes
One of the newest sites with all the bells and whistles, Rockwood Station is a luxe home away from home. Although it is still off the grid, you are treated to not only a flushing toilet, full power and kitchen facilities but also an indoor spa bath!
Rockwood Station is located just over an hour from Christchurch in a small area called Windwhistle. The station would have to be one of my fave sites from Canopy Camping, it's just that little bit different from the others we have been to so far and is dreamy in every single way!
Rockwood is surrounded by lots of things to do, with walks on the property and the beautiful Washpen Falls just down the road it's in such a great location you would never get bored. The Summer house consists of a large single room with kitchen, bedroom and lounging all sharing the same space. Large glass sliding doors open out from the sitting area onto a surrounding deck, which is a beautiful place to just be still and listen to nature sing around you.
In the Summertime you can freshen off in the river and the swimming holes that run along the side of the property. Then in the cooler months you can sit around the beautiful outdoor fires and roast marshmellows or even cook wood fired pizzas, theres just so many things you can do to ensure your time at Rockwood is magical.
Again the owners are amazing, they will talk through the history of the property with you and answer any questions you may have, then leave you to it! Although their cute kitty likes to stay over sometimes, she cuddled up with us all night so if your a cat lover your in luck haha!
Rockwood Station truly is a dream, we had such a romantic time off the grid and really enjoyed that little bit more luxe feel especially since we went in the winter time.
Perfect for honeymooners, couples, girls trip / sleeps 2
