Psst, got your glamorous party outfit yet?

If your answer is “No,” we wonder if it’s time to turn your attention from table decor and gift-wrapping to looking sensational at those parties you’re attending over Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

When considering party-wear such as LBDs, jumpsuit and party separates, we must mention trends such as velvet, sequins and trouser-suits. We’re also noting important details like asymmetry and off-the-shoulder necklines, and embellishment such as feathers, frills, fringing, embroidery and, of course, sequins.

As we’ve said previously there are lots of hemline options this season and lots of beautiful luxe fabrics as well as velvet including lace, chiffon, crepe and jacquard. Plus, of course, anything lavished with sequins or “sparkle” as well as print, from floral and abstract to animal-prints.

Sequins and “sparkle,” are hard to wear successfully at any age yet they keep appearing on catwalks. That’s because models tend to have very “straight” and angular bodies so sequins look amazing on them. For the rest of us, not so much…

All-over sequins or shimmer create the illusion of more curves thus they are very flattering on women with straight and angular bodies.

For us, the ability of shine and shimmer to add inches is less welcome. To wear all-over sequins or shimmer without creating the illusion of extra inches, consider buying in a larger size to avoid cling.

Other solutions include partial sequins…For instance, we love a sequin slip dress, but believe it works best partially hidden beneath a dark blazer or jacket which we’ll keep on all evening!

Other options are to pair a sequin bottom half with a very plain (possibly long-sleeve) top, or to team a plain bottom-half with a sequin top half and then add a plain blazer or other jacket.

Or just wear sequins as embellishment…

Left: Sequin slip dress, River Island, £65, sizes 8-16

Right: M&S sequin top, navy, £25, sizes 6-24

Left: Sequin midi skirt: River Island, £65, sizes 6-16

Right: Wallis, now £25, sizes 10-16

You don’t need us to tell you about the Little Black Dress; you know all about LBDs. We will just mention that the season’s best may be navy or teal or burgundy. It is all about the instant glamour and instant flattery of an LBD, rather than it actually being black…

Left: Phase Eight navy LBD, £285, sizes 6-20

Right: Gina Bacconi, £220, sizes 8-26

Left: Roman, £40, sizes 10-20

Right: M&S, £35, sizes 6-24

As an LBD is likely to be knee-length (the “little” in the name is a bit of a giveaway!) here is party-wear for all who prefer the extra coverage offered by a maxi, a jumpsuit or a midi (by which we mean a dress with a mid-calf hemline and fullness, pleats, etc).

Left: Phase Eight maxi dress, £225, sizes 6-20

Roman dipped-hem midi, £70, sizes 10-20

Left: Metallic snake-print midi dress, Blue Vanilla, Debenhams£32, sizes 8-16

Right: Phase Eight jumpsuit, £130, sizes 6-20

As we have been saying for some time, trouser suits are hot, hot, hot… For party-wear, choose one in tuxedo-style, as rocked by Emma Thompson or in a luxe fabric such as satin or metallic jacquard.

Left: Tuxedo jacket, Boden, £160, sizes 8-20 (matching trousers, £90)

Right: Reiss Arla jacket, £375, sizes 4-14 (matching trousers in sizes 4-16, £175)

Glamorous evening separates are a clever way to put tops, trousers and skirts together to create a party outfit unique to you. Party separates also allow you to deal with any issues of proportion in body-shape… for instance, a bottom-half in a dark colour and matte finish is good for “pears”, while a top half in a muted colour without too much sparkle is flattering for “apples” or those with a fuller bust.

Left: Wallis, £44, sizes 8-20

Right: River Island, £30, sizes xs-l

By the way, we think you should know that the best party pieces are selling fast. It is, after all, December. All retailers are keen to avoid unsold stock so they’ve bought less…so, if you are slow, you risk missing out! Have fun shopping for your party-wear. We’ll be back with more information and fashion advice soon. In the meantime, stay sensational.

With four key jewelled tones, each range is created with the perfect cosy and festive home in mind, meaning there’s the perfect trend update for you this season. Take a look at our favourite pieces from each collection for a magical Christmas!

Our personal favourite theme from the collection, we love the cosy and inviting colours of the Amber theme. We’ve chosen 9 of our favourite pieces from the selection, keeping a cosy, spicy, animal theme in mind. Our Christmas tree decorations host a mix of timeless round baubles, forest inspired pinecones, a fluffy dog decoration and the sweetest owl decoration. For our other picks, we’ve chosen pieces that work to cosy up every lounge and kitchen. Our favourite pieces in this collection vary from classic Christmas elements to Nordic inspired decorations, to hints of the rainforest! We just adore the parrot and gem baubles for unique finishing touches, as well as the multipack of finial baubles and adorable Toucan snowglobe. For a Nordic touch, we love the pine cone tealight holder and glass decorative tree. We’ve picked a variety of different ornaments that would look sensational on a white Christmas tree for the Sapphire theme. We love the luxe onion shape of the three pack, the elegant glass blown droplet bauble, glitter baubles and the kitsch dolphin and beaded shell baubles. We’ve chosen an eclectic mix of exotic and traditional patterns and styles for our gold theme. We’d be fibbing if we said that either of us needs a new coat. Of course, neither of us needs a new coat. But when did “need” have anything to do with wanting to look sensational?

Instead, let us be totally honest and say we’d like a new coat because there are so many gorgeous ones around to tempt us…

When buying a coat these days we seek 3 things:

1. It will turn heads
2. It will generate coat-envy wherever we go
3. We love so much we will not want to take it off.

Sorry, we almost forgot a fourth thing: we also want it to keep us warm.

When choosing a coat colour, keep in mind that most neutral shades will work over most outfits. Also that dark neutrals – and dark colours, generally – need less dry-cleaning. (But you know that!)

We adore the season’s pastels which, like cream and winter-white, are perfect for occasions and weddings. Of course, pastels and those pale neutrals are high-maintenance but, personally, we’re willing to overlook the dry-cleaning bills in return for the sheer glamour they add!

We also love the on-trend brights, such as purple, fuchsia, chrome yellow and red.

Styling tip: if your coat doesn’t match your outfit, fill in the neckline with a gorgeous scarf that does match the coat. It will cleverly conceal what you are wearing underneath…
To show you some of the season’s most covetable coats we have been searching the collections. Here are our top picks, but you can find lots more here.

After making its runway return a few seasons ago, it has taken a few winters for faux-fur to be HUGE… But now it is…

Whether you want yours short, knee-length or midi; whether you prefer it in a “natural” colour or in a pastel or a bold hue, whether you want it to resemble your old Teddy-bear or you prefer it plushy and smooth a faux-fur coat is (in all senses) hot for A/W18. And if all-over “fur” feels too much, look for it as a lavish trimming.

Left: Yumi, £85, 8-16

Right: Hobbs, £269, S, M, L

Left: Dorothy Perkins £60, 6-22

Right: H&M, £69.99, sizes, xs-l

A padded coat – AKA a quilted coat, a duvet-coat or a puffer coat – is the perfect choice if you like to combine style with practicality. (Yes, they are sometimes also known as a “Puffa,” but that is a brand-name so may only be used for an actual Puffa). After starting life on the ski-slopes as a warm, water-resistant cover-up, the padded (quilted, etc) coat got a make-over. With a sleeker cut, and crafted in stunning colours and a variety of lengths, the padded coat transitioned to desirable coat for city, country and all outdoor life…

Left: Peter Hahn, £239, sizes 10-24

Right: Studio by Preen, Debenhams, £79.20, sizes, S, M, L

Left: Roman, £70, sizes 10-20

Right: Boden, £190, sizes 6-22

We expect you’ve noticed that block-colour coats are A Thing! It all started with a pink coat at M&S about 5 winters ago. Since then we’ve grown accustomed to tailored coats in gorgeous colours. To tempt us, this season’s block-colour coats are available in an entire paintbox of pastels and bold hues…

Left: Pure Collection, £108, sizes 8-20

Right: Hobbs, £299, sizes 6-18

Left: Winser London£350, xs-l

Right: Boden, £198, sizes 6-22

There are also beautifully tailored coats in understated colours or in quintessentially British tweeds and checks. This small selection highlights just a few of the season’s important understated colours which include camel, black, navy, grey, cream/winter-white, burgundy and dark green.

Left: Phase Eight, £219, sizes 8-18

Right: Jigsaw, alpaca and wool, £499, sizes 8-16

Left: Joseph, £795, sizes 32-44

Right: M&S, £99, sizes 6-22

We hope you enjoy shopping for your perfect coat. We’ll be back soon with more fabulous fashion for women of 50-plus. In the meantime, stay sensational.

We all love a bargain don’t we? You don’t have to answer, but speaking for ourselves, we definitely love a bargain.

By ‘a bargain’, we mean fabulous fashion with a tiny price tag AKA affordable fashion. We mean buying something that’s right on trend that everyone will think cost a fortune (and make our friends a teeny bit envious), but that actually cost very little!

Navy Check Bouclé Jacket. £28 at Tu. Sizes 8-22

It’s perfectly possible to look super elegant and on-trend in affordable fashion. But there are tricks:

  1. Try to avoid anything that could look ‘skimpy.’ If necessary, consider buying a size larger than you normally wear to ensure the piece hangs well and doesn’t pull across the bust (or anywhere else). By the way, oversized pieces – which, as we feel sure you know, are very on-trend this season – definitely look pricier.
  2. The other trick to buying at very low prices is choosing the right colours. An inexpensive item often looks pricier in a neutral or classic colour. However, if you love the season’s hot shade, go for it…
  3. Another way to look as if you are wearing premium brands when you’re not is by teaming your “bargains” with pricier pieces or luxe accessories that you may already own. Black Secret Shaping V Neck Slip. £16 at Tu. Sizes 12-22
  4. Structure is useful in making inexpensive pieces look pricier. The best way to create structure is with good lingerie. A well-fitting bra will provide good support while shape-wear, such as a bodysuit, control-pants or a shaper slip, not only holds us in and helps us look trimmer, but helps to make clothing hang better and thus look more expensive.

Here are some of our favourite pieces across the affordable fashion ranges. The featured brands offer great fashion at very affordable prices and are brands we know you fashion-savvy women love.

As you know, all the season’s hottest dresses have sleeves, which is good news for those of us who prefer to keep our arms covered. As you also know, the season’s hottest dresses are often crafted in print, including animal markings, ditsy florals and oversized blooms.

We especially love these floral-print frocks, which we can wear for work styled with a blazer and brogues, boots or loafers.

We can also wear both dresses for off-duty and weekends styled with trainers or flat boots. They would also take us for a dinner-date styled with heels, bold jewellery and an adorable little bag.

Shop all Dresses

Red Floral Print Asymmetric Midi Dress – £20, George at Asda, in sizes 6-22 Vila Blue Floral Midi Dress, now £33.75 at Dorothy Perkins. SKIRTS

The season’s best skirts are midi-length. A midi-length pleated skirt is a wonderful workwear option paired with flat boots and a blazer or an oversized knit. But it can also be party-perfect styled with glittery pumps and a party handbag. We also love the season’s new midi pencil (or wiggle) skirt. It, too, works for workwear with a crisp shirt and maybe a blazer. It can be transformed into a ‘wow’ going-out piece with an off-the-shoulder jumper, dark tights and heels.

Browse Skirts

William Morris & Co x H&M Pleated Skirt £34.99.  Sizes from XS to XL Black Button Detail Pencil Skirt, now £18 at Dorothy Perkins.  Size 6-22 JUMPERS & TOPS

Jumpers not only keep us warm but – with tops – are the building blocks of a winter wardrobe. Sometimes, however, we want a jumper or top that is more than a basic. We want something “wow” to give our wardrobe an instant boost. And here is the jumper and here is the top to do that…

Shop Tops & Jumpers

Online Exclusive Multicoloured Dogtooth Print Shirt – £18 at Tu.  Sizes 8-22 Moon and Stars Embellished jumper – £35 at M&Co PARTYWEAR

You may expect fabulous party pieces to come with a bigger price tag, but we’ve truffled out these two brilliant pieces that fall firmly into the category of affordable fashion. The wide-leg jumpsuit in black not only looks bang on trend but is the perfect alternative to an LBD. That embellished blazer could be worn over the top of the jumpsuit if you don’t want to show your arms, or could boost the glamour-quotient of any LBD or party separates.

Shop Partywear

Black Embellished Sequin Open Front Blazer – £28 George at Asda in size 8-22 Black wide leg lace top jumpsuit – £25 from Tu COATS & JACKETS

Coats and jackets sometimes tell their price. But not this pair of beautiful, affordable coats.

The grey check tailored coat is smart enough for workwear but teamed with jeans and a block-colour scarf, is perfect for weekends and off-duty wear, too.

One of us (the one with a penchant for orange) especially loves the easy-on-the-eye orange bouclé coat. It’s a ‘natural’ to throw on over jeans for lunch with friends, but could be easily worn over tailoring or a dress for the office.

Explore Coats & Jackets

Black Check Bar Back Maxi Coat from New Look – £49.99 in sizes 6-18 Orange Boucle Coat, now £63.20 at M&Co in sizes 8-22

We’ll be back soon with more of our favourites picked just for you. In the meantime stay sensational!

When we browse a glossy magazine or fashion pages or look at the fashion collections, what do we not see? We do not see a single trend coming through strongly, nor even a few trends. Instead we see a smorgasbord of styles and looks. We see a kaleidoscope of colours, patterns, fabrics and silhouettes.

We think that means we now live in a post-trend world.

A post-trend world is a Good Thing, in our view. It has the potential to provide wearable, ageless fashion that gives us, chic women over 50, lots more options.

There were, of course, always some options in fashion. But those were mainly limited to the interpretations of key trends. Right now, fashion is offering us a lavish buffet of wearable and ageless fashion from which we can pick.

For starters, let’s look at colour. Despite some influential magazines declaring that one particular shade is the hot colour, that’s not the reality. The A/W fashion buffet offers us an entire paint-box of colours. There are bold brights, subtle muted tones and soft pastels. There are also several notable neutrals such as navy and brown. Unexpectedly, the neutrals include black. The fashion pack consider black a bit passé but it is a shade many of us still like to wear, especially at party-time, so it is widely available, too.

There is also  an almost infinite choice of silhouettes and cuts on offer, from ‘bodycon’ to ‘boyfriend’ to oversized.

A bit of fashion history…

Then there are all the options in lengths, from knee-length to maxi.  There are also many alternatives in fabrics from sheer chiffon to chunky tweed and sumptuous velvet. You will also see endless options in print and pattern. There are ditsy, delicate florals, digital prints,  bold blooms, business-like checks and a jungle-full of animal markings, notably leopard and zebra.

If you’d like to know why we now live in this wonderful world of wearable, ageless fashion with its infinite number of options, it is because of us. That’s “us” older women, by the way, rather than “us” at SoSensational (though SoSensational may have had a bit of influence).

The Cinderallas of the fashion…

For 50 years older women were the Cinderellas of a fashion industry which mainly served up a diet of young fashion. Chic older women had to search out ageless fashion. We also had to find a way to wear fashion that was primarily designed for pre-pubescent waifs. At some point, the older woman of past

decades gave up the battle to find actual fashion and fell back on the kind of apparel that a younger generation would deem “frumpy.”

Terrifyingly, that “older woman” is now us. And we do not wish to wear frumpy clothes. We want wearable ageless fashion.

Fortunately, we are important to the fashion industry so the High Street is now beginning to design and make some ageless fashion with us in mind.

Indeed, in the future, the young consumer may have to find a way to look good (and appropriate) in clothes that are not designed or made for her. Welcome to our world!

Not just an age issue…

Age is one factor in the arrival of this new era but it is not the only factor. If it was just about age, that could be easily solved by keeping to a single or dominant trend and having longer hemlines (oh yes, and sleeves on more dresses).

But that’s not what is happening. This era of limitless fashion options is here primarily because the industry cannot dictate to our generation. We have the fashion savvy and the confidence to refuse fashion which doesn’t suit or flatter us.

(The current generation of younger women also deserve some credit for all these options as they also refuse to be herded into a one-trend-fits-all style of dressing.)

Thus, there are styles, silhouettes, cuts and colours to love (and to suit a woman over 50).…Ooh, it makes our head spin to think of all the fabulous ageless fashion. There are maxis and midis, tweed and tartan, velvet and lace, faux-fur and wool, zebra and leopard, layering and volume, wide-leg trousers and skinny jean, feathers and fringing, sequins and embroidery

But (and it is a big but) in order to find all this ageless fashion from all the brands, you would have to search 100s of websites or trawl the High Street. Instead, you could let SoSensational  do the searching (and trawling) for you…

And, naturally, if you are over 50 and Petite or Plus, SoSensational is definitely the best place to come for your A/W fashion buffet….

Do you think it’s easier to find ageless fashion, when there isn’t a specific trend?

Boots are brilliant for Autumn and Winter. Obviously, they are the best kind of footwear to keep your feet warm when the temperature falls. But they are also the perfect way to finish and style all your A/W outfits.

We love boots with denim, and we love them with tailoring. For a leg-lengthening trick, team straight jeans with high-heeled ankle boots. Alternatively, tuck jeans into knee-length boots.

If you are wearing a sleek tux or palazzo-pants for party-wear, consider adding them rather than sandals for an edgier look.

Boots look great with midis and maxis. They can look business-like and polished for work-wear. They also give an edge to chiffon and other “evening” fabrics that are so on-trend right now for daywear.

And best of all, if you team any flat boots with  heavyweight opaque tights (or with a pair of leggings) they can give additional wardrobe life to skirts or dresses which we thought were unwearable because they were too short…

Here is our Top 10.  Find fashion with function right here…

  1. Mmmm, pale caramel  with shearling trim, from TOMS. Cyndy is lusting after these…

2. Also from TOMS. The perfect ankle boot to wear with navy, grey and everthing denim

3. Burgundy, with a chunky heel. Here is polished elegance from Hotter

4. Jan can’t wait to get her hands on these pale beauties from TOMS

5. Perfectly on-trend animal print, from Boden

6. Yummmmm. Black ankle boots sporting the season’s hot block-heel. By Geox at John Lewis & Partners

7. Elegant, on-trend, goes-with-everything and powerfully comfortable, from FitFlop

8. Elegant, and they pull into A/W18 everything in our wardrobe. From M&S

9 & 10. And to show you that we value practicality, too, here are two of our fave knee-high boots. The beauty on the left is for seriously keeping us warm. It is from Celtic & Co, while the wide-fit Riding-boot (right) is by Dune.

Do you prefer long or short boots? Have you found your perfect pair yet?
