Often, we get asked if we only “do” cruises at Singles Travel International. And we are quick to say, “NO! we have tours, weekend getaways and adventure trips too!”  But we can’t help but wonder why cruises are the focus when people think of singles traveling together. Maybe because “singles cruises” are a THING.

It’s the “thing” to do when you have a break up or a divorce. Singers write songs about singles cruises. Cruises just seem to garner more attention. So, we guess because it’s a “thing,” people assume it’s all that we do. We say take the advice of your millennial children and take a tour. It could be the life-changing experience you’ve been yearning for all along.

As solo travel is the hottest travel trend going these days, you will notice that this push for solitary pilgrimages to find yourself and just unplug are not taking place on mega cruise ships with 2,000 bunny-hopping couples. Immersing yourself into a local culture unlike any place you’ve ever been is the secret to a truly rewarding vacation. We say “solo schmolo!” Singles spend more than their fair share of time alone. Why vacation alone too? Singles Travel International is here to show you the best destinations and provide the most unique local experiences and joining one of our tours is the answer to finding your best vacation yet.

Tours really provide the best, more intimate way to see a destination. If you call and ask our sales team what’s the best way to see Italy, we will never tell you to get on a cruise ship. We prefer the casual tour with lots of free time to explore. Some meals included, but some dining spots are left open, so you can try that cute corner bistro you found on the walking tour. Or find out where the locals hang out to practice your Italian. [You can easily see the daily itinerary of any trip we offer and what meals and activities are included.]

It may be all about the pace.

No port-hopping. No rushing to get back on the ship by 5 p.m. then get showered and dressed up to have frozen fish for dinner. Local hotspots replace 10-20 lounges on the ship. You can immerse yourself in conversation with a local pub owner rather than the cute couple from Nebraska celebrating their wedding anniversary.

Maybe it’s the local flavor.

Tours give you the chance to spend the night in a location and see how the locals celebrate, like our NYE in Ecuador Adventure. We ring in the New Year with locals in downtown Quito and take part in the annual tradition of “Año Viejo.” {In Ecuador at the stroke of midnight, people around the country bring effigies of politicians, pop culture figures, and other icons of the year to torch in the streets. This tradition of burning the “año viejo” (“old year”) is symbolic of cleansing the bad from the previous 12 months before the new year commences.} You won’t find that on a cruise ship! Nor will you find a day of rafting, ziplines and medicinal hot springs to make your vacation complete.

Part of our NEW Locally Grown collection of tours, Active Argentina Plus Iguassu Falls will challenge you and excite you with water, wine, rafting, cycling and lots of free time in spectacular, mountain-studded, fresh air locations. Active tours, local food and wine and simpler accommodations so you can see it all without busting your Bucket List budget.

Why So Many Cretes?

Because our Isle of Crete Rendezvous has the best experience of local hospitality at a resort that caters only to singles. This means we will send a small group or 2 or 3 and they will have a wonderful singles vacation because the resort only hosts singles! We cannot say it enough. SINGLES. ONLY. RESORT. What could be better than that? Discover the world’s best beaches, take public transportation into town to shop at the market, cooking classes and more. So, go ahead and find a Crete tour that fits YOUR schedule and don’t forget to add a night or two in Athens. If you’re already traveling that far from home, you need to see the ruins, and stroll the markets of ancient Athens. Our hotel is within walking distance to the best attractions.

Same destination a whole new way

When it comes to Ireland, you hear one of two things. “Been there,” or “I want to go there but not on the usual tour.” We had to find another way for you to discover (or rediscover) Ireland. We bet you haven’t seen Northern Ireland. We also are going to guess you haven’t canoed in the beautiful green mountains of Mourne Sweep. Or enjoyed a culinary tasting tour of Dublin. Did you even know Ireland is considered a foodies’ paradise? Our Taste of Northern Ireland and Dublin is more than a taste. It’s a downright dive into the Emerald Isle, including the once forbidden city of Belfast. See Ireland again in a whole new way.

We hope you will take the time to check out all the tour options we have for our singles and add one or two tour destinations to your Bucket List. After all, a single cannot live on cruising alone. The small group experience will enhance your vacation and just may be the relaxing vacation you’ve been looking for. Leave the ball gowns and high heels at home and set out on a local adventure in a faraway place.

Ever since I was about 16 years old, it’s been my dream to visit Bali, Indonesia. My first exposure the islands of Indonesia (over 17,000 in all), was aboard Holland America Cruise ships. Who were these exotic people… so friendly and so eager to please?  My inquisitive nature shortly brought me closer and closer to the land and its people through in-depth conversations with the crew about their homeland, family lives and culture.  I even learned several phrases in order to show my respect.  Every one one of them was so proud to tell their personal story, why they worked on the ship and what were their ultimate dreams and goals after returning back home.  I found myself inspired by their dedication to work for what they wanted, with an end in mind; a decision that took them from the land they loved. Unequivocally, every one of them encouraged me to come for a visit and to enjoy their beautiful islands.

Although I thought about Indonesia from time to time, longing for the amazing massages in Bali (aka, Land of the Gods) for the most part and sailing the pristine, turquoise waters, I did not dedicate myself to getting there.  I had so many other places to see, closer to home.

Until last year when my team suggested that we add a “President’s Cruise” to our menu of singles cruise vacations. I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off this initiative. So here I am, nearly 40 years later, headed to the land of my teenage dreams and I can’t believe it’s really going to happen!

I began a list of Must Dos while I’m there and I’ll be starting my adventure off with a full spa day on arrival.  The flight is long but there’s no other way to get there! However, once I arrive, I know that the gentle hands of my experienced masseuse, will knead my achy muscles into a state of nirvana.

I plan to indulge in all of the local specialties, scuba dive ’til my heart’s content, swim with sea turtles, pick up some tips on sailing, practice yoga, learn something new (surfing?) express gratitude in the temples, kick back and relax in the Gilis, sink my toes into white, black and pink sand beaches in the same week and slay (I mean observe) a Komodo Dragon.

My “Must Do” list is certain to fill my soul but traveling with tons of STI members will surely fill my heart.  Rekindling relationships and forming new ones is guaranteed to enhance my experience because instead of tackling this journey alone, I will be surrounded by friends.  I imagine much time spent laughing and sharing with aspirations of returning home with a whole  new perspective on my life.

And who knows, I may even run into an old friend from Holland America!

KOHS AND STICKY RICE EVERYWHERE

Islands Islands…Kohs Kohs everywhere on the west coast of Thailand…from solitary rocks to high cliffs with limestone to rock holes to national parks to inhabited, vibrant barrier islands. Bluish green crystal clear water, emerald rock caves, jungle mangroves, white fine sand to coarse coral beaches..small and secluded or stretching on as far as the eye can see, either uninhabited or lined with island bars, minimarts and resorts. One island connected to another by a sand bar at low tide.

Most islands not connected except by ferry or trond long tail boats followed by a tuk tuk, songthow, van, bus or train ride. A bridge…once in a blue moon. The scenery is breathtaking but so are the modes of transportation if you are prone to motion sickness..lol!! Agility and flexibility are a must to climb awkward ladders, straddle railings, hop onto tailgates and use so called toilets while moving…you definitely need to be able to laugh at your contorted body.

So many gorgeous Kohs (pronounced gaws)….let Singles Travel International help you decide which ones and arrange all “Koh Hopping” transportation. Just hop on with us and enjoy the ride! On one day out of Koh Ngai, enjoy an included, three island hopping snorkeling and caving adventure to Koh Chuek, Koh Mook/Emerald Cave and Koh Kradan. On two other days, recommended optional excursions will take you to other Kohs. Snorkeling enthusiasts must go to Koh Ha and Koh Rok out of Koh Lanta for snorkeling that rivals the Great Barrier Reef. A five to seven island sunset cruise will show you the pristine beaches and unique shaped Kohs surrounding Ao Nang in Krabi.

How does one maintain their energy level to keep hopping?? Steamed rice, or sticky rice or noodles everywhere for every meal…B,L,D….just add your desired protein and favorite curry sauce! Asian foodies will live for the variety on this trip, especially the street market food. Spicy or spicier…Green, red, yellow, panang or mussaman curry, stir fried, pad thai, pad sew, tom yum or tom kha soup, papaya salad, spring rolls, dry or wet roti, fruits and coconut ice cream galore. Remember to eat with a spoon or chopsticks….eating with a fork means you do not like the food!

Most locals do not cook…cheaper and easier to buy on the street. Snacks for 55 baht…$2. Lunch and dinner for 200-400 baht…under $10. Local beer 50-100 baht, cocktails/wine 150-350 baht. Breakfast buffets are included but you will get to experiment for lunch and dinner….just trust your local guide to help translate just how hot and spicy you desire! Time to go Koh hopping while eating rice? Join us in Thailand in November 2018.

When traveling, I usually find that Americans travel 10 days while most other nationalities travel for 2-4 weeks. Oh, we Americans do love to work and I realize businesses do not encourage 2-4-week vacations. But, when one is traveling half way around the world with 30+ hours of travel time to reach tantalizing Thailand at a cost of around $1,500 for airfare, common sense might tell us to stay a few extra days. Right? At Singles Travel International, we always offer extensions to our trips so you can take advantage of the destination once you arrive.  Besides arriving at least one day before your tour leaves to make sure you leave with it, take a side-trip of a few days on either end to hit one more place on your bucket list. Baby boomers…  watch your millennial children and follow suit by extending your vacation. Life is short, especially if you are already a baby boomer!

Thailand is a gem of a place to take side trips. From Bangkok where your tour starts, head to Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai (my preference) in Northern Thailand, or to Angor Wat/Siem Reap in Cambodia or to Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. Once you have crossed the big pond, local flights are dirt cheap, under $100. I just tacked on three of these…Chiang Mai (air), Chiang Rai (“upscale” GreenBus from Chiang Mai for under $20 RT) and Ho Chi Minh (air) with local flights averaging $60 each.

Do you like a smaller city closer to the mountains and the Golden Triangle? Then try Chiang Rai with an all-day tour to the Golden Triangle where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand all meet.

A boat trip on the Mekong River will let you get you close to all 3 countries and set foot on Laos long enough to taste their snake/scorpion/opiate alcohol concoctions while passing No Man Island where all the opiate drug smuggling takes place since no country owns the island. Also visit the amazing White Temple, Blue Temple and Black House. Chiang Mai offers a larger city with all day tours to Doi Inthanon National Park with amazing King & Queen pagodas and waterfalls or Doi Suthep-Pui National Park to view the temple and visit local White or Long Neck Karen or Hmong village tribes. Both cities offer the opportunity to explore their old walled cities with numerous Wats (temples), street markets, night bazaars and tons of delicious, inexpensive Thai food. Last but not least, one must take a day getting real muddy while playing with and bathing elephants at the numerous elephant sanctuaries outside either city.

Did you serve in Vietnam, become a hippie, dodge the draft, support or protest the Vietnam War (American, anti-US war in Vietnam)? Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, beckons us if only out of curiosity and respect…..once enemies, now friends. As I boarded VietJet I thought of Allegiant Air back home and wondered if the old tin can would make it there! It did, and I am so glad I experienced the Saigonese way. Vibrant, alive and crazy at times, especially when crossing the streets….and changing daily as its renovation has really only been happening for 25+ years. The Cu Chi tunnels are a must…crawl inside to get an unfathomable taste of the reality of locals and troops for 20+ years….and to think the real tunnels were half the size. The War Museum and Reunification Palace tell us about the “American War” to liberate the South Vietnamese…there is always at least two sides to every disagreement. Don’t forget to ride a sampan on the Mekong Delta.

I must return some day to visit Cambodia and Angor Wat or Siem Reap. Maybe you will beat me there and tell me all about that area with your blog?? Now it is time for you to choose…. Tour or Cruise? Pick an “Exotic” Singles Travel International trip in November 2018 (Thailand or Vietnam) and then tack on your side trip to the other country. Go for it…. See them both. YOLO, we only live once to the best of my knowledge! Khob Khun Ka and Cam O’n to my new Thailandese and Vietnamese friends!

What might entice you into sailing the Star Clipper tall ship fleet or trying another smaller ship such as the Hurtigruten ferry line offering similar charisma? Doing a little less? Packing a little less? Enjoying the people around you a little more? Singles Travel International just headed back to the windward Caribbean in March 2018 on the Royal Clipper and will be heading to Bali, Indonesia on the Star Clipper in July 2018….total opposite sides of the world on a tall sailing ship! We will also be heading north of the Arctic Circle to the fjords of Norway aboard a Hurtigruten ferry ship…a hidden gem bucket list trip.

Are you curious about the charisma of smaller ships? Might you enjoy the intimacy and tranquility of only 200 guests with no casinos or glitz or fancy shows? Like-minded adventurers who value personal growth and exploring over luxury will enjoy the multiple off the beaten path ports which are not accessible to larger ships. Camaraderie between guests and crew/officers will let you high five new global friends, delighted that you know everyone’s name.

You will continue to cheer on all guests and crew/officers as they are the main actors on stage for the evenings’ entertainment….models in a fashion show, main acts in a talent show, looting wenches and pirates. Foodies will appreciate the exquisitely plated white linen tablecloth dinners with local cuisine, without the need to dress to impress. Modern or all wood immaculate cabins with plenty of ship areas for just relaxing while viewing breathtaking scenery will provide a relaxed, yet upscale, style. Unique, small group, energetic or cultural activities in each port or on the ship will enhance your bonding with new travel companions.

And when you travel with Singles Travel International, you’re not dining alone or toasting the hoisting of the sails by yourself.

Serene and peaceful….star gazing from a lounge chair on the top deck with sails billowing or maybe even sleeping under your favorite constellation, relaxing in an aft hot tub under the Midnight sun or Northern lights, taking a nap in the widow’s maker bow cargo netting, photographing the Arctic Circle globe while tasting cod liver oil, climbing a mast up to the crow’s nest, waving at sister ships as they pass side-by-side.

Smaller ships and smaller Single Travel International groups focus more on the needs of the few ……and sometimes the need of one or a few outweigh the needs of the many. Come join Singles Travel International on a smaller ship with a smaller group of like minded singles to realize that less may be more for you.

What is your definition of Exotic? The dictionary defines exotic as an adjective used to describe something originating in a distant foreign country or “of a kind not used for ordinary purposes or not ordinarily encountered.” Not conventional. This is where the word takes a turn in the travel industry — toward destinations off the beaten path. Locales at the four corners (or curves) of the earth that few have the privilege of seeing in their short lifetimes. The unique places that call to us in photographs, sounds and stories.

As travel professionals, we feel it is our job to help you discover those tucked away gems that everyone is talking and posting about. but make sure the trip fits the needs of our demographic of baby boomer singles. Let us introduce you to the hottest exotic destinations on Earth and find you the closest price to no single supplement we can deliver.

Here are five unconventional destinations we recommend you get to sooner rather than later.

1. Antarctica -remote- “The Vast Emptiness of the southernmost continent cannot be exaggerated.” -Hurtigruten Expeditions. Here’s an article on nine reasons why you must get there. We have a client who has been all over the world but returned to Antarctica a second time because it was the most unique place she has ever been. https://www.hurtigruten.us/must-read-articles/antarctica/9-reasons-to-travel-to-antarctica/

2. Cuba -forbidden- Get there before the crowds. Environmentally to politically to culturally, Cuba is poised for an explosion of change in the next two years. This vibrant country has been held down long enough and is ready to share its music, culture and beautiful beaches with the United States.

3. The Galapagos Islands – evolution – In many ways, Galápagos is much the same as when Darwin first set foot in the archipelago, back in 1835. This remote archipelago is a land of stark lava formations, cactus forests, lush green highlands, turquoise bays and quintessential tropical beaches. But, best of all, it is overflowing with wildlife at every turn. Only a set number of visitors are allowed each year and rumor has it this number is set to decrease.

4. ASIA— A big continent to tackle, so take small bites

Thailand – travel bans – Known for tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha, the ‘Land of Smiles’ is expecting to welcome a record 37.5 million travelers in 2018, according to data revealed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Making it the world’s most visited city. WOW! Who knew? Our tour takes you off the beaten path.

Vietnam/Cambodia -foodie- Voted the number one destination for foodies. Your tastebuds will be absolutely ecstatic as you meander down the Mekong River and explore the amazing tastes of the Vietnamese culture.

Bali/Indonesia – exotic island hop– we will have you falling in love with not only these amazing destinations, but with the sea as we explore on the Star Clipper sailing ship. Perfect for dropping anchor in small island chains to include Komodo National Park.

Here at Singles Travel International, our Exotic collection of departures will fill your Bucket List and create unique travel experiences with the bonus of new single friends. We all need more single friends who love to travel, don’t we? If you have a taste for the exotic, give us a call and we will find the best option for you.

To search our site for Exotic destinations, just click on “EXOTIC” in the trip activities drop down on the ALL TRIPS PAGE. Then hit “Find Trips.”

It must have been our opening line…

“We are here to offer single travelers a community of people their own age to travel with and save solo travelers big money by negotiating no singles supplement offers.”

We watched their eyes open wide and a smile spread across their faces as they processed the idea of being able to travel in a room/cabin of their own without paying double. The next sentence that spilled from their mouths was almost always the same. “Do you mean I can have my own room for half the price I usually pay?” Our answer was simple. “YES!”  AND BOOM! Our first booth at the New York Times Travel Show became an overnight success. We spoke to hundreds of singles who loved to travel but were paying double for their vacations because they were traveling solo, with couples and honeymooners… and they were not enjoying it. We were giving single travelers a gift.

We knew we were onto something when we turned our energy to negotiating special offers for singles, but what we didn’t know was so many singles out there didn’t know we existed. After all, Singles Travel International has been in business for more than 23 years.

The Dream Envisioned

A single woman with a love for travel and a dream started it all. Tammy Weiler, President of Fun & Adventure for Singles Travel International tells it this way.

“My “why” for starting Singles Travel International was to serve singles who were afraid to travel alone and soon I understood that there was an even more compelling problem to solve; the single supplement.  No matter where I appeared, radio, TV, on tour with singles, the prevailing complaint that I heard was “Why do I have to pay more as a single traveler?” For several years I tried to explain it to our travelers and then one day I said, “this is crazy, they don’t understand it so why fight it?  I am going to campaign on behalf of our travelers so that we get a better deal for single travelers.”

We had always offered a complimentary roommate matching program and about 30% of our members still chose to pay more.  But in today’s environment, and especially in our baby boomer market, our members are done with sharing.  They want their own space and we are committed to getting better deals for them to travel and enjoy their room or cabin for less.  So, after 23 years of serving single travelers, we are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and today, we boast no single supplement on 50% of our tours and cruises.  We’ve only just begun and as the leader of Singles Travel International, my mission is to leave no stone unturned in finding the best prices for our single travelers.”

You are able to count on Singles Travel to find and negotiate the BEST rates for your vacation. The other companies out there just aren’t going the extra mile to reduce or eliminate the solo supplement. What does this mean for you? We believe it means you will be able to travel TWICE AS MUCH when you save on your vacations without paying a singles supplement. Be sure to check out our trip departures before you book with another agency. We are here to fight for your rights as a solo traveler. You’re not alone anymore.

*The best way to locate our trips that have no singles supplement is to do a search on our site under “Trip Activities.” Go to ALL TRIPS, then search the drop down for NO Singles Supplement under “Trip Activities” and hit the big gold box “FIND TRIPS.”  Or just give us a call at 877-SOLO-TRIP and we will help find the best fit for you. We also offer FREE roommate matching if you want to save even more and share with a new friend.

As we stare at the Calendar for 2018 and think to ourselves, “How is it 2018??” we hit the ground running with resolutions, promises of a better life and planning to make it all happen. Some of us are staring at single digit temperatures and imagining warm sunny destinations and outdoor fun. Either way, ESCAPE is the theme. We want to escape the pitfalls of 2017 or escape the frozen air and windshield scrapers that surround us… Or BOTH! At Singles Travel International, we are on the path to scheduling our 2019 trips and beyond. Try planning that far ahead!

Did you know most of our singles book their vacations 9- 12 months in advance? With just about 140 days until Summer is here with warmer temps, here are some great Summer options to choose from with great offers right now. Whether you seek the warm Mediterranean sun, or chilled, majestic views, our cruises have it all. (And new single friends to enjoy it all with.)

Plan on a great time in the Western Med with our Epic Med Cruise*. The perfect start for singles new to Europe and singles travel. Seven nights, three countries and good walking shoes will have you well on your way to one amazing Summer Vacation. Be sure to add our Barcelona package to get the most of Spain and to meet your new single friends early. Warning! This trip leads to a love of Europe and even longer Bucket List.

If your mittens are just too adorable and you want to take them on vacation, we’ve got you covered. With two Alaska departures this Summer in June or August*  you can trade Summer heat for the Midnight Sun. June includes a cruise tour, which many of our singles have been requesting to make their Alaska vacation complete.

The British Isles Cruise has a unique twist or two. Join us early for Beer & Chocolates in Brussels with tours and a scenic train ride from Brussels to Amsterdam where we board the ship.

Expeditions are HOT for 2018! Here are two more places to chill and drink in the scenery.

  1. Antarctica* – all the wonders of the 7th Continent will not disappoint! We don’t know how much longer there will be opportunities to go to Antarctica. It’s a crystal gem for sure that needs to be at the top of your Bucket List.
  2. Norwegian Fjords* (Voted most scenic cruise view!) With cascading waterfalls, majestic mountains, and clear, deep waters, the Norwegian fjords are a world of their own.

Your 2018 clock is ticking! It’s time to book your 2018 singles vacation. Grab your fingerless gloves and dial us up (877-SOLO-TRIP) or use your mouse to navigate to Singlestravelintl.com and click BOOK NOW.

Request those days off and start looking forward to amazing things for 2018 and beyond. Prices are at their best in January and space is available, so you have the options you want for cabin location, no singles supplement and excursions to make your singles vacation truly your own.

*NO Singles Supplement

It’s that FESTIVE time of year again. Everyone is out mingling and meeting new people. It’s the perfect time to make new friends and share the idea of singles travel. Why not make a little money on the Season?

REFER FIVE FRIENDS WHO BOOK BY 12.31.17 and we will give you $500 off your 2018 vacation!

Do some quick math… that is $100 for each Single who books! But you have to get FIVE. If you get four, we will give you $25 for each. This deal is only good if you bring in FIVE new singles who book with STI. It’s good to have Holiday goals so think Holiday Hookup every time to go to a Holiday party, work or family gathering or Meetup event.

Our exclusive referral program makes it so easy to refer a friend. Everyone knows someone who is single and needs to get out there and see the world. All they have to do is add your name to the How did you find STI?: field in our booking system when they book their first trip. YES, it’s that EASY. AND they will receive $50 off their first trip. WIN WIN for everyone. (WEEKEND GETAWAYS DO NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE REWARD.)

Here are 4 Great Tips to Leverage Your Holiday Networking:

1. TALK BUCKET LIST: Vacations and Travel are at the top of almost all conversation starter lists out there. Ask people you meet, “Do you like to travel?’ Start talking about your last vacation or where you’d like to travel in the future. You may find people who love to travel but hate to go alone. BOOM. Now you’ve got them!

2. ROCK IT: Wear something fun you purchased on your last vacation. Maybe a t-shirt, a unique piece of jewelry or a fun hat. It’s the perfect segue into chatting about travel. CHA-CHING! You’re on your way!

3. SOCIAL STATUS: Change your social media profile photo to a travel pic and say “Ask me about my Singles Travel International Vacation!” If you’ve never traveled with us before, post a pic from a favorite destination that is on our calendar in 2018.

4. SHARE A LINK to one of our trips you’ve been wanderlusting after and ask if anyone would like to go with you. You’ll be $500 closer before you know it!

We are so excited to meet your single friends on any of our 2018 vacations. Good Luck and have a wonderful Holiday Season.

Sincerely,

The Crew at Singles Travel International
