Known as the land of mythical Gods and ancient civilization;  Greece and its surrounding islands are generally at the top of many bucket lists.  The myths came to life for the members of Singles Travel International with seven days on Celestyal Crystal, and included all the hot destinations in Greece, but more importantly, the time to explore.  From the antiquities of Athens to the turquoise waters and amazing sunsets of the islands, our recent adventures were anything but mythical.

Athens is the first step of our Greek journey and no visit is complete without the trek to one of the most iconic hills, Acropolis.  At just over 500 feet high, atop the summit, sits the Parthenon, one of the most famous buildings in the world.  This viewpoint gives the opportunity to see view down on the other monuments, as well as a view of modern Athens.

From the central location of Syntagma Square, our first stop on the Hop On Hop Off bus affords the group the ability to take on the rest of the city’s amazing sites.

For those guests that came in for the STI pre-cruise stay in Athens, our day of embarkation offered a side trip to Corinth for a cruise on the canal and an authentic Greek lunch before heading to the Port of Piraeus to embark on our upcoming journey. Athens is the perfect jumping off point for your island hop. It sets the stage for all the beauty and history that is to come.

For those that are unfamiliar with our ship, the Celestyal Crystal, once onboard you feel the charm and comfort of a smaller ship.  That accompanied with the included drink package, onboard gratuities and even 3 shore excursion; lends to a great vacation.

Our adventure began as we set sail that evening for our first port of call, Mykonos.  We arrived at this charming island the following morning.  Walking into the village of Chora, it looked just like a postcard.  Every glance, at every turn, I was overwhelmed by the picturesque images of this quaint island.  We made our way along the perimeter of the island, passing through Little Venice, with walkways edging right to the clear blue of the water. We wandered on until we came upon the iconic backdrop of the windmills. Although there are many peppered throughout the island, the five standing in a row  have overlooked the sea since the 16th century.  For those that wanted a bit more history, they made their way via a short boat ride to Delos, to delve into the history dating back to 3000 B.C.

Our overnight in port granted us the opportunity to see this amazing place at night.  After dinner, several ventured back from the ship to enjoy some more shopping, or even a few drinks along the waterfront. It’s so rare that a cruise ship allows for overnights in a port. This unique feature really enhances the vacation.

Our departure from Mykonos was the following morning had us on our way to our next port of call, Milos.  We arrived midday, and tendered into this quiet little island, known for the discovery of the statue of Venus de Milo.  For those that were not on a scheduled excursion, we made our way out to Sarakiniko Beach.  Once at the top of the hill, it felt as though we were walking on the moon!  These incredible whitewashed formations were a result of volcanic activity thousands of years ago and the crashing waves impressing upon the rock.  A further walk down uncovered an amazing white sandy beach in the cove.

We set sail later that evening from Milos on our way to the well-known destination of Santorini.

A highlight of this itinerary is that we were able to spend 2 full days on this beautiful island.

cal·de·ra; /kalˈderə,kôlˈderə,kalˈdirə/noun/ a large volcanic crater, typically one formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of the volcano.

Santorini… it invokes visions of whitewashed buildings cascading down the cliffside, incredible sunsets and stunning panoramas over the caldera. Yes, it was just that!  Upon approaching the crescent shaped island on the tender, the realization of three ways to reach Fira sank in.

1.  Cable Car

2.  Walk the near 600 steps

3.  Donkey

Yeah – I took the cable car!

Needless to say, the hype is real! The first day, we were on our own to make our own discoveries, shop and yes…eat!  The following day, we were tendered to the newer port where we boarded the buses that were awaiting to take us to Megalachori and on to Oia that boasts the best location to view the sunsets.  After the tour, we still had then entire afternoon and evening on our own. Could this be the island that Plato considered Atlantis?  It definitely adds a little mystery to a lot of charm!

After leaving Santorini in our wake, we journeyed on to Crete.  Our inclusive excursion transported us to the ancient ruins of the Minoan Palace of Knossos.  These majestic ruins contrasted against the surrounding hills.  It is remarkable to capture a glimpse of what life was like thousands of years ago.

Staying on track with our time travel, from Kusadasi, Turkey, we made our way to the ancient ruins of Ephesus.  To walk through the streets and marvel at the wonders that passed through thousands of years  – it’s hard to put into words.  As we departed early evening, we made our way back to where our journey began in Athens.

Another check off my bucket list, but this destination holds its place on my “ I want to go back!” list.  Greece far exceeded my expectations as a travel destination.  What are you waiting for?

Check out our upcoming departures for 2019 and 2020

Greek Island Fantasy – May 13- 21, 2019 – extend your stay with a week at a singles-only resort on the Isle of Crete

Isle of Crete Rendezvous – Six departures to choose from. All with your own room- no extra charge.

Our recent “President’s Club”, singles cruise to Indonesia sent me down a path of reminiscence and introspection that rekindled my sense of identity. Inspiring others to bring out the best in themselves, brings out the best in me.  Since the very beginning (1993), during my first trip with singles to Amsterdam and Brussels, I began serving my purpose. I may not have been fully aware of my destiny just yet, but I felt good watching my travelers not only enjoy the destination, but grow personally in the experience.

I heard all about the fears that they overcame to take a “first trip to Europe”, “travel alone for the first time, without knowing anyone else”, “leaving the US for the first time” and so on.  Quickly, it was obvious that, with just a little encouragement, they could realize that their abilities to try new things, overcome fears and break down barriers were right inside of them all along. Holding 1 hand at a time was the beginning of a new beginning for me and after 24 years as President and CEO of Singles Travel International, my gift of helping singles grow and develop themselves through travel is still at the core of each of my days.

This summer kicked off a concept that our team created during one of our recent brainstorms; they said that members might enjoy traveling with me, as president of STI.  We agreed to try it out on a sailing vacation in an exotic location because it would provide an easy platform for inspiration.  Indonesia is half way around the world for most of us and a sailing vessel of 364 feet was outside the box for nearly all of us.  As one by one, our members signed up to join me, they dreamed of learning to sail, experiencing an exotic new culture, tasting new cuisines and making new friends. But I don’t know how many anticipated that amazing accomplishments and life changing experiences were on the horizon.

We all met in Bali, that in itself a 40 year dream for me and as I understood, for many others on the trip. We were all looking to check off a bucket list trip together.  What ensued was magical.  Our local guides, Suwin and Windy immersed us in the Hindu, Balinese life that they knew so well and of which we were unaware.  One of the memorable moments was during a private event for STI members to include a cooking class and lunch in the countryside.  What we never imagined was that we’d have a chance to try planting rice in a rice paddy.  Some of us gave it a try and later in the trip, Elizabeth came to me to say that “it was such a meaningful experience to her because her mom had been from Asia and had done the same to raise her family in her early years.”  The love and care that we felt from the locals, who treated us like family, nurtured incredible feelings in us all that the world is a good place.

But dragons were on the horizon… Komodo dragons that is.

For many, visiting Komodo Island was a highlight of our cruise, for some, the biggest fear. Meeting face to face with a flesh eating beast and a guide with only a forked stick as protection, was not what some may describe as a “walk in the park.”  Our small group encountered a dragon early on and as we rushed to see a young male in the bush, Kristie looked at me and said, “thanks, I am glad I have someone here by my side to do this and not alone!”

For others, it was a matter of “how close can I get”?  Becky and Emily from Michigan said that it “was a bucket list dream to get a selfie with a Komodo Dragon” and “they were so excited to get one with the dragon’s mouth wide open!”

Back onboard the Star Clipper, we found many new opportunities to challenge ourselves.  Fourteen of us “climbed the mast”!  Renee was cheered on by Singles Travel International members and said that “she was supported by her new friends, which made it possible and added to making her trip wonderful.”

Socializing in a small ship also stretched the comfort zone of some members.  On a large ship with all the distractions of shows, dance clubs and casinos, conversations are often simple and polite but don’t always have the chance to gain depth.  On our intimate vessel with 100 guests (40 singles), there was plenty of time for making new friends and deepening relationships as the week passed by and our very own members joined together to participate in activities, shows and even the entertainment.  Our members were lovingly encouraged to get on stage to sing karaoke, play an instrument and I don’t think that anyone was left off the dance floor on any given night.  Kathy rose up like a star after we heard her version of “Summertime” during our happy hour one night.  With a little encouragement and Sergio as back up on the guitar, Kathy “spread her wings to take to the sky” while the entire ship clapped and cheered her on.  Ron from Chicago, got his backup singers and dancers (Maryann, Lisa, Lisa, Jim, Laura and Kathy) together for one last performance on the road!  They brought down the house with “Johnny Be Good” at the talent show.

Our team sets out to create an environment for our members to have an incredible adventure and to grow personally at the same time.  What we continuously witness is the amazing creativity and courage that comes along with every group.

David from New Jersey did his first open water dive encouraged by super divers Maggie, Tanya and Melinda.  Several other members were able to try diving for the very first time with a certified instructor.  Stephanie from Arizona learned to snorkel for the very first time and she said, “it was another member who encouraged me to try it and gave me lessons this week.”  We all agreed that snorkeling and diving in Indonesia was incredibly beautiful with virgin reefs, walls of colorful fish and everyone’s favorites, the sea turtle and blue starfish!

I am always delighted to see what costumes appear during our theme nights and the STI team had selected Robinson Crusoe or “shipwrecked” night for the President’s Party.  What a blast walking onto the deck to twin Gilligan’s, Mary Anne’s and a few Wilsons!  Bill from California, delighted us all with his version of Robinson Crusoe, with long hair, full beard and tattered clothing, we barely recognized him.  What a transformation from a relatively quiet guy to life of the party!

On the first day of the cruise we provided each member an empowerment card to fill in independently as they accomplished new things on their week in Indonesia. I was filled with joy when several returned the cards to me at our farewell party to say thanks for cheering them on and how much it meant to them to be a part of this incredible journey.

The magic on this cruise is not unique to Indonesia.  Similar stories are part of every Singles Travel International vacation.  Our team of caring and professional Concierges are ready to meet you right now. I look forward to sharing the next President’s Trip experience with members, next summer, at the World’s Largest Jazz Festival in Montreal! Appreciating live Jazz music, savoring gourmet cuisine and tasting fine wines in Old Montreal are new opportunities to spread your wings!  Click here to join me.

Alaska is a Bucket List destination for many travelers. Its grandeur, its Gold Rush and Native American history, the wildlife and the sheer natural beauty are what draw people from around the globe to our 49th state and the Pacific Northwest. Forty of our singles experienced this final frontier in August and were in awe of the ship and the beauty of Alaska.

Our members boarded NCL’s newest ship, the Norwegian Bliss, from Seattle and embarked upon a 1-week cruise of a lifetime up the Inside Passage. The ports of call were Ketchikan, Skagway, Juneau and Victoria, B.C., but the at-sea days at times were the star of the show!

Gold Rush Night

Why? Because being aboard the Bliss was like having front-row seats at the Super Bowl: This ship was made with viewing in mind. The Observation Lounge – which comprises roughly the front half of the ship on Deck 15 – is lined with  floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing you to take in every stunning moment, from bald eagles soaring over glaciers to whales breaching out at sea! What’s more, it’s filled with comfortable couches, chaise lounges and easy chairs, much like an extremely large living room with extraordinary views (and a full bar and wait staff, to boot!) So if you want to see the beautiful wildlife of Alaska but were wondering just how much cold air you would have to brave, the view is spectacular in the warm beauty of the Bliss. With only one day at sea, and one day cruising Sawyer Glacier, you won’t miss a thing while your toes warm up.

Since Alaska is known as the “Land of the Midnight Sun,” summertime is the perfect time to go. You’ll enjoy up to 17 hours of daylight! What does this mean for you? It means you have more time to take advantage of views while cruising and of what the ports of call have to offer.

Some of our members took one of our singles-only excursions; a combination whale watch followed by seaplane tour to Mendenhall Glacier from Juneau and said it was “one of the most amazing experiences” of their lives. In Skagway, others took an exhilarating speedboat ride through the fjords; in the same type of boat used by the Navy Seals, they sped off in red “exposure” suits to keep them warm and dry and came back with smiles and stories to tell. In Ketchikan, known as the “salmon capital of the world,” some members joined a crab feast. Even without doing an excursion, I was able to see seals chasing salmon in the creek right in town. And in Victoria, British Columbia, members went to the famous Butchart Gardens to see flora that grow so bountiful because of the mild climate and plentiful sunshine.

If Alaska is on your bucket list, the Bliss is the ship you should choose, and summertime is the time to go! Join us in the Land of the Midnight Sun next year.

Are you ready for your next epic adventure to the Mediterranean?  Just a few items I want to share before you click “Book Now.”

What’s the goal of cruising? Whether you are a skilled cruiser or a novice, it’s a well-known fact that cruises give you the opportunity to experience a port city or the surrounding areas within a day…and to tempt you to come back and explore more.

The Singles Travel International Mediterranean cruise aboard the NCL Epic, gives you just this opportunity.  It’s a port-intensive itinerary that gives you the ability to take in some of Europe’s most popular ports along the Mediterranean Sea:  Barcelona, Naples, Rome, Florence, Cannes and Palma de Mallorca!

If you’re ready to set sail, the Epic Med cruise is for you.  Pack your comfy shoes as well as your dancing shoes! There are a lot of historical sites to see and experience, but there’s a lot of late night dancing once our singles get back to the ship.  They are on vacation and there to enjoy EVERY MINUTE!

Traveled to some of the cities before?  That’s okay…I’m sure you’ve been to the beach more than once too!  Personally, I’ve enjoyed this same cruise with multiple groups and it’s always different – and ALWAYS fun.

The greatest part is that you don’t have to experience this by yourself!  Singles Travel International provides a group of fellow solo travelers to experience these adventures with.

Okay…. I’ve heard the grumbles about group travel before, but don’t worry – I’m here to clarify!

STI has spent nearly 25 years in the solo traveler business and understands the many facets of traveling as a single.  Our ultimate goal is to bring together solo travelers that are in search of adventure and comradery.  To give the opportunity to check those destinations off your bucket list, while having FUN! Our mission statement says it all:

Creating life-changing experiences and unique opportunities to meet the world…together!

Here are some unique features of travelling with our groups:

  1. No Single Supplement!  On the NCL Epic, take advantage of the Single Studio. It’s the perfect size for a solo traveler. If you want a balcony, sharing is worth the savings!  Share is Caring when it saves you $$$
  2. Join us as much or as little as YOU choose.  Let’s face it, singles need time to “regroup.” After all, it is your vacation!
  3. Let us take the work out of your vacation – We understand that you are independent, but sometimes it’s great to have our professional team take care of the details.
  4. Location, Location, Location – There’s something for everyone from weekends getaways to exotic destinations.
  5. A Concierge to take care of the group while they travel. We are here for you to make sure you have the best cruise ever. We plan activities, happy hours and more to help you meet and mingle with our singles.

It’s as simple as choosing what destination will be next for you.  Our Epic Med cruise for 2019 has a little twist. We depart from Rome and we have a two night package before we board, so you get to spend extra time exploring the glory of Rome. See more when you CLICK HERE>>> Epic Mediterranean

See you Soon!

Upon arriving in Bali, I didn’t know what to expect. I’d seen the movie “Eat, Pray, Love” and knew it was a tropical island with its share of yogis. I knew it would be hot and humid. I had guessed the food would be fresh and aromatic with local spices and lots of rice. But what I didn’t expect was that its residents would be so kind!

Our Balinese guides, Windia and Suwin, went out of their way to make our group feel welcome. Upon arrival at the airport, we were each met with a lei of the omnipresent plumeria (or frangipani) flower, and their fragrance stayed with us for the remainder of the trip.

For the next several days, our guides regaled us with stories about their culture.

Bali’s inhabitants are mostly Hindu, practicing Balinese Hinduism, which is a blend of Shivaism and Buddhism. Everywhere we went, we saw beautiful small offerings, or Canang sari, daily devotional gifts to their gods— and to appease evil spirits. The offerings are placed on the ground, in small alcoves in walls and in temples. Made of braided palm leaves into the shape of a small square basket, the offerings are filled with frangipani, incense and usually a little morsel of food. They were so beautiful, colorful and delicate, like little works of art that greeting us new each morning.

Our group was welcomed at a local family’s home, where they offered us the traditional Balinese tea and homemade sweets. My favorite was made with sticky rice, coconut and brown sugar and then wrapped in palm fronds. The time and effort that surely went into wrapping each tiny pocket of rice cake didn’t go unnoticed. While we were there, we were able to watch the grandmother, whose family had lived on the compound for 9 generations, construct the daily offerings with her granddaughter.

The Balinese were always ready with a smile and with the hands-together hand gesture (as if praying) to say thank you. And despite the gorgeous weather, the wonderful snorkeling and cuisine to knock your socks off, I’d say the Balinese people were definitely the unexpected icing on the cake!

I highly suggest everyone take at least one exotic trip in their lifetime! Check out our 2019 Calendar and find your trip of a lifetime – STI 2018 Calendar

Often, we get asked if we only “do” cruises at Singles Travel International. And we are quick to say, “NO! we have tours, weekend getaways and adventure trips too!”  But we can’t help but wonder why cruises are the focus when people think of singles traveling together. Maybe because “singles cruises” are a THING.

It’s the “thing” to do when you have a break up or a divorce. Singers write songs about singles cruises. Cruises just seem to garner more attention. So, we guess because it’s a “thing,” people assume it’s all that we do. We say take the advice of your millennial children and take a tour. It could be the life-changing experience you’ve been yearning for all along.

As solo travel is the hottest travel trend going these days, you will notice that this push for solitary pilgrimages to find yourself and just unplug are not taking place on mega cruise ships with 2,000 bunny-hopping couples. Immersing yourself into a local culture unlike any place you’ve ever been is the secret to a truly rewarding vacation. We say “solo schmolo!” Singles spend more than their fair share of time alone. Why vacation alone too? Singles Travel International is here to show you the best destinations and provide the most unique local experiences and joining one of our tours is the answer to finding your best vacation yet.

Tours really provide the best, more intimate way to see a destination. If you call and ask our sales team what’s the best way to see Italy, we will never tell you to get on a cruise ship. We prefer the casual tour with lots of free time to explore. Some meals included, but some dining spots are left open, so you can try that cute corner bistro you found on the walking tour. Or find out where the locals hang out to practice your Italian. [You can easily see the daily itinerary of any trip we offer and what meals and activities are included.]

It may be all about the pace.

No port-hopping. No rushing to get back on the ship by 5 p.m. then get showered and dressed up to have frozen fish for dinner. Local hotspots replace 10-20 lounges on the ship. You can immerse yourself in conversation with a local pub owner rather than the cute couple from Nebraska celebrating their wedding anniversary.

Maybe it’s the local flavor.

Tours give you the chance to spend the night in a location and see how the locals celebrate, like our NYE in Ecuador Adventure. We ring in the New Year with locals in downtown Quito and take part in the annual tradition of “Año Viejo.” {In Ecuador at the stroke of midnight, people around the country bring effigies of politicians, pop culture figures, and other icons of the year to torch in the streets. This tradition of burning the “año viejo” (“old year”) is symbolic of cleansing the bad from the previous 12 months before the new year commences.} You won’t find that on a cruise ship! Nor will you find a day of rafting, ziplines and medicinal hot springs to make your vacation complete.

Part of our NEW Locally Grown collection of tours, Active Argentina Plus Iguassu Falls will challenge you and excite you with water, wine, rafting, cycling and lots of free time in spectacular, mountain-studded, fresh air locations. Active tours, local food and wine and simpler accommodations so you can see it all without busting your Bucket List budget.

Why So Many Cretes?

Because our Isle of Crete Rendezvous has the best experience of local hospitality at a resort that caters only to singles. This means we will send a small group or 2 or 3 and they will have a wonderful singles vacation because the resort only hosts singles! We cannot say it enough. SINGLES. ONLY. RESORT. What could be better than that? Discover the world’s best beaches, take public transportation into town to shop at the market, cooking classes and more. So, go ahead and find a Crete tour that fits YOUR schedule and don’t forget to add a night or two in Athens. If you’re already traveling that far from home, you need to see the ruins, and stroll the markets of ancient Athens. Our hotel is within walking distance to the best attractions.

Same destination a whole new way

When it comes to Ireland, you hear one of two things. “Been there,” or “I want to go there but not on the usual tour.” We had to find another way for you to discover (or rediscover) Ireland. We bet you haven’t seen Northern Ireland. We also are going to guess you haven’t canoed in the beautiful green mountains of Mourne Sweep. Or enjoyed a culinary tasting tour of Dublin. Did you even know Ireland is considered a foodies’ paradise? Our Taste of Northern Ireland and Dublin is more than a taste. It’s a downright dive into the Emerald Isle, including the once forbidden city of Belfast. See Ireland again in a whole new way.

We hope you will take the time to check out all the tour options we have for our singles and add one or two tour destinations to your Bucket List. After all, a single cannot live on cruising alone. The small group experience will enhance your vacation and just may be the relaxing vacation you’ve been looking for. Leave the ball gowns and high heels at home and set out on a local adventure in a faraway place.
