Exciting news from the British Drum Co today as they reveal their entry into the marching percussion market with the brand new Regimental Series of marching drums. Scott Currie Music is proud to announce its appointment as a marching and pipe band dealer for the fast-growing British brand based in Stockport, England.

The Regimental Series represents the elite instruments of the marching world and the drums are of the standard you would expect to see during such events as the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, or entertaining heads of state from around the world.

The drums in the Regimental Series, on first impression, may appear quite traditional, but on closer inspection the cutting-edge technology and innovation that is built-in to the instruments begins to reveal itself. The Palladium hardware that features prominently across all other British Drum Co products also plays a major role in the Regimental Series, but the real advances are to be discovered just beneath the surface, particularly on the RS1 snare drum.

The flagship snare drum in the Regimental Series is the RS1. One of the most innovative developments in this drum is the inclusion of the upper and lower Levitone snare mechanisms. Brand new technology, developed entirely in-house, the Levitone systems allow for simple but extremely accurate fine tuning and a smooth and silent changeover of snares when needed. Levitone is an elegant, functional innovation with stunning aesthetics quite unlike anything seen before on a traditional marching drum.

Staying with appearances, the traditional styling of the hoops belies the fact that they are constructed from high-grade aluminium which allows a lower profile than wood, providing a welcoming benefit for the solo drummer over alternative hoops currently on offer. Another notable feature is the DragonTooth snare release lever on the Upper Levitone which has been cleverly styled to match the rest of the Palladium hardware

As if an entire new range wasn’t enough, the British Drum Co also announce that the RS1, their flagship drum, has just been supplied to the Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. Recognised as the best in the world and with their exacting attention to detail, it comes as no surprise that the Royal Marines Corps of Drums have chosen the British Drum Co.’s RS1 snare drum to help maintain their outstanding position among the best military drummers in the world.

Commenting on the launch, British Drum Co Marching Division Manager Stu Warmington said “While this has been a few years in the planning, we wanted to launch a range of drums that, were not only the best traditional marching drums in the world, but also technologically innovative and these snare drums are certainly that! With the first batch of drums being built and supplied to the Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines there is no greater accolade we could ask for”.

Alan Kitching, Design Engineering Manager for the British Drum Co said “The brief was simple – design a traditional looking drum that’s also innovative and lighter than the competition. Of course, at British Drum Co, we like to lead and not copy, hence there’s plenty of innovation including a self-balancing and visually extraordinary upper snare mechanism with naturally smooth operation. We had already designed the art-deco style lugs over a year ago, but now needed an equally inspiring throw lever – straight levers looked too mechanical – and so a curved ‘dragon-tooth’ lever was designed to look stunning while still being functional. We pride ourselves in this attention to detail – it’s our thing! Every part of the drum was then engineered to be as light as possible using the best alloys and advanced polymers available, with the vast majority of components, including the tooling for our injection mouldings, manufactured right here in the UK.”

British Drum Co CEO, Keith Keough added “As the CEO of the British Drum Co – a UK manufacturing company that’s only just over three years old – I am immensely proud to be able to launch the Regimental Series. Every single member of the BDC team has put their heart and soul into this project and the Marines’ overwhelmingly positive reaction to our drums has been a validation of our drum-making expertise”.

The Regimental Series range consists of four different snare drum options designed to suit all players, including younger drummers. As with most traditional marching drums, the Regimental Series also includes bass and tenor bass drums in a range of different sizes and colours.

The Royal Marines Corps of Drums will showcase their new British Drum Co Regimental Series drums at their annual Mountbatten Festival of Music concert held at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday 15 & 16 March, 2019 in the presence of His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, who is the Captain-General of the Royal Marines.

Stay tuned to our website for further information on the Regimental Series in the near future. Enquiries from marching and flute bands are welcome.

D’Addario’s Evans Drumheads is breaking into pipe band drumming with a brand new, high tension snare batter head.

Designed in collaboration with Stephen Creighton and his world championship-winning drum corps at St. Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band, Evans sought out new materials to create a head that meets the needs of the modern snare drummer while also catering to those of the traditionalists. Pipe band snare drummers require an extremely bright and articulate sound, and often have to push the limits in terms of pitch and tension on their snare to achieve them successfully. In doing so, drummers would often find their heads breaking right at the point when they are sounding best. Now, the Evans PB SB1 Pipe Band Snare Drumhead is a brand new option that gives drummers the confidence to not only push their heads to the limits, but to achieve the tone and pitch required for a championship-winning corps.

Additionally, pipe band drummers had to choose between a head that offered a bright and articulate sound for solo performances and a heavier head for more projection in outdoor settings. The new Evans pipe band snare batter offers the best of both worlds, which drummers can appreciate on and off the green.

“The new Evans pipe band snare head is by far the best head I have ever played on” Stephen Creighton says. “With its crystal clear clarity, unmatched durability, and ability to maintain pitch and tone, I could play this head all day!”

This drumhead will be available in 14″ for standard Andante and Pearl snare drums, and oversized for Premier HTS 700 and HTS 800 snare drum variations.

Scott Currie Ltd’s company director Scott Currie said “It has been our pleasure to work with D’Addario’s pipe band project team since inception in 2015, and we are proud to be the first retailer to market with the Evans PB SB1 pipe band snare drumhead in partnership with D’Addario and D’Addario UK. We’re very excited about the innovations D’Addario brands have in store for pipe band in 2017 and beyond.”

You can pre-order now ahead of delivery in mid-July, when the head will be exclusively available from us several weeks ahead of official launch in August. All pre-ordered heads will ship the same day they arrive with us, you won’t get them quicker anywhere else.

Get ready for the hottest piping product release of 2017 with the new Blair Digital Chanter, due to take the piping world by storm when it is officially launched next month.

The Melbourne-based Australian bagpipe electronics specialist Murray Blair of Blair Digital Bagpipes & Tuners, a renowned perfectionist in the development of industry-leading digital applications and devices for the Great Highland Bagpipe, has unveiled the next generation in electronic bagpipes with this new feature-packed Blair Digital Chanter.

At first glance, the Blair Digital Chanter looks and feels exactly like a high-end practice chanter with real holes. It’s not until you pay closer attention to the large OLED screen beautifully recessed into the top section that you realise you have in your hands something very special indeed.

Billed as offering ‘endless possibilities’, the Blair Digital Chanter has three default bagpipes to choose from; Great Highland Bagpipes, Smallpipes and practice chanter. All sounds are 100% real, professionally recorded and studio quality by Murray Blair himself. The chanter is also fully-updatable and expandable to add more bagpipe sounds in the future via USB connection. Everything is controlled by a single navigation button next to the screen, which makes it so easy to operate. A built-in rechargeable battery eliminates bulky battery ports and additional cost. And then there are the hand-engraved mounts because it has to look good.

Where the Blair Digital Chanter really stands out from the crowd is in its connectivity and usability. Featuring MIDI output, USB, 3.5mm audio output and PC, iOS and digital tablet connectivity, the possibilities for playback and recording really are endless as described. Compatibility with acoustic amplifiers and speakers, Guitar FX pedals and Amplitube, and integration with apps such as Garageband, Logic and Ableton open the door to the Blair Digital Chanter becoming a staple feature of live performances and studio recordings. But it’s the device’s unique ability for its operating system to be updated and expanded that signifies the product is future-proof and here to stay.

The Blair Digital Chanter is raising a lot of eyebrows and rightly so. Stay posted for further information and pricing coming soon.

Promark by D’Addario is thrilled to welcome Stephen Creighton to their percussion artist roster and launch the Stephen Creighton PBSC and Stephen Creighton ActiveGrip PBSC signature sticks. These will be the first products that the brand introduces to the pipe band market.

Stephen Creighton is a world-renowned pipe band drummer and Drum Sergeant of the St. Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band in Dublin, Ireland. Throughout his career, Stephen helped lead the band to British, European, Scottish and over ten All-Ireland Grade 1 titles. He also led the drum corps to a world title and the band placed third overall at the 2016 World Pipe Band Championships.

Stephen is also an accomplished soloist and has been consistently in the top twelve senior drummers for eighteen of the last twenty World Solo Championships. He has seven All-Ireland solo titles and is known for his musicality and tonal perfection.

“Working with Promark, I went through several iterations to perfect the design of my new signature drumstick” Stephen Creighton explains. “By shifting the weight to the front of the stick and tapering the back of the grip, we created a stick with improved balance and rebound. With Promark’s advanced weight and tone sorting processes, and high quality maple, this design makes the perfect pipe band stick.”

The Stephen Creighton PBSC Signature Stick will be available in July, 2017 in three finish options. Standard lacquer, painted white and ActiveGrip, Promark’s patented, heat-activated grip coating.
