First, people have a variety of reasons for heading to Canada. In order to gain access, you need to show the government that you have a legitimate reason for crossing the border. This could be for work, school, or because of family.
Working in Canada
If you are planning to work in Canada, you may want to establish permanent residency. This can be done through an express entry for skilled workers, a special visa for entrepreneurs, or for self-employed workers. As part of your application you’ll need to provide paperwork and evidence that you have a legitimate business. You’ll also need to be healthy, not have a criminal background, and promise to leave once your studies are complete.

The other option is to obtain a family sponsorship which requires you to have a Canadian citizen (or permanent resident) who is a relative. A spouse or partner submits the request online and the government selects random applicants to pursue further with a full application process.
Customs Duty Charges and Taxes
Once you are ready to make your move to Canada, you need to consider the customs duty charges and taxes. One of the biggest questions moving companies receive is “How much will I have to pay for Canadian duty charges?” The range for taxes, duty charges, and tariffs varies from zero to several thousand dollars. The answer depends on several factors, the first being your incoming classification. This is primarily divided into two categories:
Settler – Those arriving to Canada and planning on establishing a residence for at least a year. If this is your first time establishing residence, according to the Customs Tariff, you would be called a “Settler.”
Former Resident – This applies to former residents who are returning to Canada after being gone for at least a year.
Everything that you pack up in boxes in your home will fall under this category, but keep in mind that whether or not something is new or used is important. If you have an item that is new in the box that you haven’t gotten around to using yet, it’s advisable to take it out and give it a spin before packing it up again. As long as you know it’s something you won’t need to return unopened, there’s no sense in paying a new item tax on it if you don’t have to.
Restricted goods are items that are allowed in Canada when certain conditions are met. These includes things like medications, plants, food, cultural items, firearms, used mattresses, and fireworks. While permits exist which allow for many of these goods to enter, there are strict regulations to keep invasive species (like bed bugs) from crossing the border.
Some items are not permitted to cross the border into Canada under any conditions. These includes materials such as child pornography, hate-speech items, obscene material, and certain kinds of weapons. Should prohibited goods be found in your shipment, customs agents will dispose of the materials and you could be charged with a crime.
The taxes and tariffs you pay for each of these types of goods vary by whether or not you are a settler or a returning resident.
Personal Effects Accounting Document
Those entering the country must pay a tax to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) on certain items they bring in, and it can be costly if you don’t know the rules. You should prepare a detailed list of your belongings before crossing the border and be able to pay a tax on items that are new or unused. This list will include items such as clothing, appliances, jewelry, decorative items, office equipment, vehicles, furniture, and collections. Be sure to include the value of each individual belonging, and also the make, model, and serial number.
You will have two lists if you are using a mover or shipper and some goods will be arriving after you. On the first list, include items that are entering Canada with you. The second list includes items coming after you with the mover or shipper. Any goods that qualify for being duty-free will only qualify if they are included on this list.
You will also have to pay a small fee to be able to get through customs itself. Typically, this fee is included in your moving costs. If you are a Canadian citizen returning to Canada, you must pay a tax on items or goods with a value over $10,000 CAD. This tax has not historically existed for United States residents who are relocating to Canada to establish residency for the first time. However, there have been several changes to the American-Canadian trade agreement recently.

Even before the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) set in the 80s, America and Canada were pretty much in lock step on their trade partnership. Then, in early June of 2018, Donald Trump placed large steel and aluminum tariffs on Canadian imports. Justin Trudeau of Canada responded with his own tariffs on a long list of American goods which will go into effect on July 1. Some of these goods include items such as lawn mowers, tableware, kitchenware, sleeping bags, mattresses, washing machines, and refrigerators.
As a first time mover to Canada, you should not have to pay a duty on your personal goods or household items. However, you will pay if they are new. Since the situation is still very fluid, it is important to work with your moving company to stay up-to-date on the latest requirements. It’s critical to stay in compliance. Be sure to keep receipts and any paperwork you have for your items in case there are questions at the border.
Making the Move to Canada – At the Border Procedures
The official clearance of your items occurs at a Canadian Customs warehouse over the border and is usually somewhere near your final destination. However, that convenience ends quickly when we’re faced with a move. How the heck do you transport that heavy, bulky machine to your new home? Whether you’re moving locally or trekking across the country, follow our simple steps and you’ll be working up a great sweat in your new abode in no time.
Step One: Make a Plan
Moving large pieces of fitness equipment like a treadmill is often the most difficult part of the move. Always make sure you carefully plan out exactly how moving your treadmill will work before starting to take anything apart. Below are the most important things to consider:
Was it Made to Move? Every treadmill model is different with some being much easier to transport than others. Newer treadmills are often designed with the need to transport in mind. Others definitely are not. Determine if your treadmill is easily foldable and/or has wheels. Also consider its total weight. All of these elements will help you determine the best treadmill packing game plan.Also, review the owner’s manual to best understand how the treadmill works, was assembled, and/or tips on disassembly and moving. If you no longer have a physical copy, many are now available online.
How To Get It Out Many treadmills, and other exercise equipment, come completely disassembled. That means getting it out of your current home could be an entirely different challenge than getting it in.Stairs, hallways, doorframes, etc. can pose significant challenges when it comes to getting your treadmill out of the building. Make sure you plan your route before you start the move as this can greatly reduce the chances of damage to the equipment, property, yourself, and others.Also consider how you’ll get it into your new home and where it will fit. Nothing’s worse than going through all the trouble of moving large equipment only to discover it can’t fit into, or there’s no place for it, at your destination.
Ask for Help Though some treadmills may be easier to move than others, we never recommend trying to move them by yourself. Smaller machines will likely need at least two people, with larger machines needing 3–4, especially if stairs are involved.Always request more assistance than you think is necessary. Pride is never worth a serious injury. Also, do consider hiring a professional moving service. Step Two: Disassembling Your Treadmill
Once you’ve collected your crew and mapped out your treadmill moving strategy, it’s time to start actually getting it ready for the move.
Put It In Neutral Move the incline to zero. If there are any other mechanical parts that need to be adjusted to a neutral position, do that now as well.
Kill the Energy Power everything off and completely unplug the machine before you do any disassembly. Also unplug the safety key.
Protect Your Stuff Before moving anything, place moving blankets on the floor. This will ensure you don’t scratch the floor—or the machine itself—during the treadmill disassembly process.
Start Disassembling Depending on how your specific machine is made, carefully fold down or begin taking apart the various pieces of your treadmill. Place all larger elements on the blanket and place smaller ones, like screw, nuts, bolts, etc. in a plastic bag.When finished, use tie down straps to bind everything tightly together, ensuring nothing can move around. Use packing tape to tape down any loose cords, wires, etc., as well as the plastic bag. Double-check that anything that needs to be locked is.
Step Three: The Move

Unwrap It Place moving blankets on the floor and underneath your packed treadmill. Then carefully unwrap and/or unfold all of the pieces. Start reassembling the treadmill.Check the owner’s manual to ensure everything it put back together in the proper fashion.
Test It Out For optimal safety, after disassembly, always test out any mechanical equipment before use. Plug in your treadmill and try it out on the lowest setting for several minutes by slowing walking on it. This will make sure it’s been properly reassembled and can safely hold weight.

Few parts of a move are more intimidating than packing up the kitchen. With countless tiny objects, a few massive ones, and tons of breakable items, we don’t blame anyone for throwing in the dish towel and paying someone to do it instead.
Follow our tips on how to pack your kitchen for a move, and your stuff will be ready for their new home in no time.
Start Planning Early
As with any stage of the moving process, we always suggest planning well in advance. This minimizes the chances of surprises like unexpected expenses or not having the right supplies when you need them most.
Planning early is also the key to an easy stress-free move. Knowing that everything is scheduled, purchased and in place will help even the most anxious or novice movers stay as relaxed as possible when moving time comes.
We suggest giving yourself 2-3 days to fully pack your kitchen. Before that date, make sure you acquire everything you’ll need for the packing itself. This means:
Extra sturdy dish boxes
Bubble wrap or packing paper
Heavy duty packing tape
Especially when it comes to boxes, you’ll almost always need more than you think. Also, ensure the boxes you choose are of a high-quality. Nothing’s worse than finally getting all of your stuff snugly in a box—and it breaks apart.
Although, you can go the cheap route and find used boxes at liquor shops, we recommend against it for this reason. Instead, spend the few extra bucks for new boxes, or even get box delivery to make this busy time a little bit less hectic.
We also suggest using packing paper instead of bubble wrap. There is no denying that bubble wrap does a great job of keeping things safe. However, it’s also terrible for the environment, especially if only used once.
Packing paper does just as solid of a job and is recyclable. If you do prefer bubble wrap, try to at least use it sparingly for your most fragile items and save it for future reuse.
Sort Your Stuff
Before you wrap up a single item and start boxing it away, go through and organize your kitchen items to see what you actually want to take with you. This will help you avoid having to make any last-minute decisions during the packing process itself.
Just think—Do you ever really use that stovetop popcorn popper or melon baller? If you haven’t touched it in over year or it doesn’t have significant personal value, put it in a Donate Box and give it to Goodwill or another charity.
The same goes for food. Start with your pantry and toss everything that has expired. Do you have any canned foods collecting dust? Throw those in the Donate Box as well for a local food pantry. For everything else like cans, rice, pasta, etc., begin packing those in the moving boxes.
Then, start with the refrigerator and other perishables. Unfortunately, you’ll likely want to toss most, if not all of the food here. Liquids can easily spill in-transit and perishables like dairy products, meats, or vegetables can spoil, especially during the summer.
Sorting everything out may seem like one extra thing to do, but once you get into your new place, less clutter will be liberating. Plus, you’ll have less to unpack!
Prep Your Boxes for Safety
First, assemble your boxes and ensure the bottoms and sides are completely secure. Then take several sheets of packing paper and crumple them into long rounded “bumpers” to line the bottom of the boxes. These will help pad the boxes, keeping your belongings safe.
Then as you pack each box, place another row of bumpers between each layer of stuff for extra protection. Put heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top. Once the box is almost full, add one last bumper layer to the top of the box.
This is where choosing sturdy, heavy duty boxes is essential. Always ensure that you haven’t overpacked the boxes containing dished
One great way to get an efficient system going is to create a “home base”. Pick a flat open area, likely a countertop, that will be the spot where you do the majority of your packing. Make sure the area is clean and dry. Place a stack of packing papers on it.
Now pick a starting point in your kitchen (don’t overthink it), tackle one section at a time, and start wrapping. Here are our tips on packing your kitchen items.
Silverware Silverware should be packed in the packing papers. Take a stack of 3-4 papers, roll up a bundle of silverware inside, and tape it securely. Make sure knives and the sharp ends of the forks aren’t sticking out to avoid possible injuries.
For valuable or antique silverware, wrap each piece separately to avoid possible damage and scratching.
Cup and Dishes Place each cup or dish in the center of a packing paper piece and fold the corners towards the center and continue wrapping around the item until secure.
Glassware, China and Other Fragile Items Obviously, be extra careful when wrapping these items. Place them in smaller boxes that is only shared by similar items.
We highly recommend getting a box specifically made for stemware, china or other items that are especially fragile or breakable for extra security. You’ll be wishing you did if anything breaks.
Be careful not to overpack each box when filling with items. Especially for your dishware and other fragile items, a box that is too heavy can lead to the bottom giving out.
To best distribute weight when packing dishware, place the heaviest plates at the bottom of the box with lighter dishes, bowls, or cups on top.
Ensure that there is as little extra room as possible for items to shift or move around during transit and pack any extra space with packing paper. This will keep things from smashing into each other during the move which can cause damage.
Always use a separate box entirely for extra fragile items like wine glasses. You can also purchase a dish pack kit for an extra secure move.
Once each box is filled, clearly label what’s inside and mark the ones filled with breakable items “FRAGILE.” Take an inventory of all of your boxes so you can ensure everything arrives at your new home and that’s it! You’ve successfully packed your kitchen for your move.
