About 30 years ago, when I was just starting playing PC, I asked a random piper at Grandfather Mountain who I should buy pipes from. He recommended Hamilton Workman and I followed up be getting a set from him. I had never heard of him at that time but was very happy with the drones (I use a Naill chanter).
Press of business, family, etc. caused me to hang up the pipes about 20 years ago. Now I am getting them out and set up again.
Back soon after I got my pipe I heard that Mr. Workman had died so I never got the chance to meet him. I didn't know anything about him and I had always wondered about where his pipes fit into the universe of the larger producers of pipes.
Now with Google I find out that he was a renowned Piobaireachd player and judge.
Does anyone have any remembrances of Hammy (as I have learned he was called)? Anyone else have his drones?
So i'm a piper, and also dabble in wood working. I'm going to attempt to make my own set of smallpipes using my wood lathe. I'll probably be making them out of cocobolo or another wood similar to black wood. The only thing is that i'm not too sure of the inside bore diameter of the drones. I have a set of Walsh A-2000 plastic smallpipes, but im not sure if the diameter is the same on wooden smallpipes. I might be biting off more than I can chew, but i'll be practicing with some cheap wood in the meantime.
With the competition season underway for 2019, my instructor told me at the end of last season that my goal for this season should be to get Grade 4 Piper of the Day at a competition. What goes into determining that? Do you have to compete in all/more than one event in Grade 4? I am a member of EUSPBA if that makes a difference.
I'm currently in the Edinburgh for a few days from America, and I was wondering where is a good place to shop for pipe band gear? I'm specifically looking for a place to buy flashes that can be embroidered.
I really love that subtle harmony/melody plus the deep drone from the pipes (and maybe synths?) You feel it in your chest. I don’t play myself, so am not really in the know of who or what to look for or even if there are many people making this kind of stuff? Any help would be appreciated.
