Statement of purpose or SOP as the name suggests is a personal statement about who you are and what are your motivations. A statement of purpose is the most crucial factor in determining whether you will get in your desired university or not. This is the only element in your applications that is completely in your control and you can shape it the way you want to. Your grades, GMAT score, LOR is dependent on external factors along with your efforts. But that is not the case in Statement of purpose or essay. Here are some of the reasons why you must consider writing an impeccable SOP.

  • 1.Highlights career goals and ambitions

Your grades or extracurricular activities solely don’t define you. There’s more to you than those numbers and certificates and statement of purpose is your opportunity to let the admission officers get a glimpse of the real you. This is when they get to know about your personality and ambitions in life. And if they find it convincing enough, then getting admitted is a piece of cake.

  • 2.Sets you apart from the other candidates

Your goals in life may not the same as the person next to you. SOPs are meant to answer the question of why a candidate deserves to be at their university. Do they have what it takes? How are they any different than the other thousands of applicants? Show them what makes your personality exceptional. The more honest and genuine you seem, they more you have a chance of getting in.

  • 3.Direct contact with the admission officer

SOPs are direct between you and the admission officer. To convince them that you have the spark they are looking for, your essay needs to be compelling. Impressing them will increase your chances of getting admitted to your dream college. GMAT or TOEFL or other standardized tests’ scores are beyond your control. You might choose who to get the letter of recommendation from but what they write is not in your hands. SOPs are your only real opportunity to talk directly to the selection committee.

  • 4.Make or break point

SOPs in most cases is the make or break point in the admission process. Colleges, especially the crème de la crème of universities, get thousands of applications from students all around the world every year. Your scores and GPA might be the same as your competitors but SOPs are unique. You can’t afford making any mistake. And if you are not taking it seriously enough, you are basically throwing away your chances of admission.

Now that you know the significance of Statement of Purpose, here is how you can avoid common mistakes in your SOP- https://www.reachivy.com/blog/5-mistakes-avoid-writing-statement-purpose-essays

Graduation is an exciting moment for every student. Your months of hard work and sleepless nights have finally paid off. And one of the best parts about the graduation ceremony is the commencement speeches. Wrapping up the academic year and celebrating the new chapter of your life is the persistent theme of the speeches. Universities often invite famous personalities and celebrities to do the honors of commemorating the graduates for their hard work and share some words of wisdom. Here are some highlights from the commencement speeches from 2019 graduation ceremonies.

    1. 1. Oprah Winfrey – Colorado College
    2. You can count on Oprah to deliver a hilarious statement with veiled wisdom. Here is what the media Moghul had to say about building your personality and making dreams come true.
“Yes, it does pay to floss. Yes, you need to look at people in the eye when you speak to them. You need to keep your commitments, you need to make your bed every day because when you do, it makes your whole house look better.”
I’m here to tell you that your life isn’t some big break like everybody tells you that is. It’s about taking one big life transforming step at a time,” said Winfrey. “But the truth is you cannot fix everything. What you can do here and now is make a decision — because life is about decisions — and the decision that you can make is to use your life in service.”

    3. 2. John Krasinski – Brown University
    4. John Krasinski, best known for his role of Jim Halpert in The Office and his recent award-winning film, The Quiet Place returned to his alma mater to share some quick career tips.
“One of the best decisions I made in my life was just to lean all the way in … People ask me how I got into acting, and the truth is, I didn’t get into acting. I got into everything … For the next four years, I wanted to be part of it all, I formed a new way of thinking. A new way of executing those thoughts. I left my comfort zone and then stayed there, and left again. I experienced firsthand the powerful shift in doing something out of love, rather than necessity.”

    5. 3. Jeffrey Goldberg – Johns Hopkins University
    6. American Journalist and the Editor-in-Chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, delivered a rousing speech to the graduates of John Hopkins in the pursuit of seeking the truth and fighting disinformation.
“This university is one of the most indispensably important knowledge-producing institutions in the world. It is your responsibility, as soon-to-be graduates of this great center of knowledge, not to ignore this phenomenon, but to fight it at every turn. By fighting disinformation, by fighting for the truth, you will invest the degrees that you are receiving with true meaning.”

    7. 4. Tim Cook- Tulane University
    8. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc. gave a stirring speech on challenging the older generations and learning from their mistakes. Addressing the young graduates, he said-
“In some important ways, my generation has failed you. We spent too much time debating, too focused on the fight and not enough on progress.”
“If you find yourself spending more time fighting than getting to work, stop and ask yourself, ‘Who benefits from all the chaos? There are some who would like to believe that the only way you can be strong is by bulldozing those who disagree with you… We forget sometimes that our pre-existing beliefs have their own force of gravity. Today, certain algorithms pull you towards things that you already know, believe or like. And they push away everything else. Push back! It shouldn’t be this way.”

    9. 5. Katie Holmes- University of Toledo
    10. Actress Katie Holmes, originally from Toledo shared some sweet and cheeky personal bits of advice at the University of Toledo commencement speech on May 5.
“Don’t be intimidated about that first job or internship or audition. And if you get it, well I have some tips for what you’ll need when you’re first starting out. If people believe in you, it makes you want to believe in yourself, and vice versa. People react to your confidence. I’ve been tricking folks for years into believing I’m other characters, and I haven’t gotten caught yet! Guys, it’s all fake!”
“For the young women in the audience, I want to encourage you to lift up, listen to, and trust one another … Especially now, women supporting women could not be more important”

Phones, television, social media… how are you supposed to concentrate and finish your studying on time? Managing time effectively is one of the main issues a lot of students face. Juggling between school, social life and extracurriculars can take a toll on you. But if you stay organized and make efficient use of time, the balance would be easy to maintain. Here are some of the tips that will help you get things done on time.

    1. 1. Take time to research and plan
    2. Before getting started with your work or studies, plan everything you want to accomplish by the end of the day. Spend sufficient time on this activity because instead of thinking of what to do next and wasting time in the process, think once and for all what needs to be done and work on it.

    3. 2. Make a to-do list
    4. After planning and organizing, make a list of things. Set the order based on priorities; something that needs to be finished first, an important topic to be covered, etc. This arrangement will help you save time and stick to the deadline. Checklists are also important so that you don’t accidentally forget to do something that might cost you your grades. Focus on one item at a time and keep on checking them off, as and when they are done.

    5. 3. Don’t procrastinate
    6. Postponing tasks has never done anyone any good. Procrastination can damage your mood, your potential, and peace of mind. Putting up things for the next day is like carrying a huge burden on your shoulders. Instead of constantly reminding yourself to do something, simply do it right now. Identify the reasons behind your procrastination and devise strategies on overcoming them.

    7. 4. Discard all distractions
    8. I am not saying that you should completely let go off your smart devices. But for the time you are studying or doing work, avoid using them as much as possible. Unless you require your phone or laptop while studying, keep their use to a minimum. If possible, turn the notifications off. This can prove to be really helpful as the constant ping disturbs your trail of thought, making you lose precious time. Eliminate disturbances and focus solely on your studies.

    9. 5. Make a schedule…and stick to it
    10. To keep yourself in the habit of staying organized, make a timetable or a schedule that would help you monitor your activities. This can also be a record of all the things that are done and left to be done. Studying small amounts regularly can help you relax and breathe in peace during exams. And I know, it is easier said than done. But once you get used to it, you will automatically see the difference it makes.

    11. 6. Make pointers or note down key takeaways
    12. While studying, make note of the key takeaways or crucial points from the topic. This would come in handy while you are revising. You wouldn’t need to read the whole chapter again. Just refer to your own notes and move on to something else. Writing notes in your own words also helps you remember things better. And voila! Your revision would be finished before you know it.

    13. 7. Award yourself
    14. It is likely that you would feel tired and lethargic after a point. So, don’t forget to reward yourself. This can be a mini-break, a nap or watching TV for a while. Breaks will make you feel refreshed and motivate you to work harder. Another trick you can use is put chocolates against pages. So, if you complete a certain number of pages at a certain time, you will earn the treat. Chocolate is a good enough incentive to encourage someone to finish things. Use your weakness to your advantage!

    15. 8. Rest well
    16. And after everything is over, allow yourself to relax and rest. A good night’s sleep is very important for a healthy, functioning body. Never compromise on your sleep. Rest well to prepare yourself for another smashing day!

As said by Jeff Rich, “A goal without a plan is just a wish”. You might have heard people talk about their goals and how important goal setting is. You might even have snickered at how much they overthink. But trust me, goal setting is a crucial step at actually attaining your dreams. Goals give meaning to your life; they motivate you to get out of your bed and do something. Knowing what you want to do in life right away is a rare trait. Most people need to sit and give a solid amount of thought as to what they want to achieve. Here are some of the reasons why you should start setting your goals right now:

      1. 1. Provides a sense of direction

Realizing your dreams in an early stage in life can give you a head start and let you stay ahead of this rat race. A written goal is a reflection of your deepest desires and wishes. It gives you a sense of where you should go next and in what direction should you move. Think of it as a to-do list for life.
Not everything might go according to your plan, but you will attain some sense of control. It will make you more determined and motivate you to do something. And what is a life without anything to live for?

      1. 2. Saves Time

Sitting and thinking after every step will waste your precious time. It will also intimidate you with the mountain size of things left to be done. So instead, write your goals down on a piece of paper or note it somewhere so you are aware of the next step. Tiny steps will help you conquer this giant mountain.
So, break your goals into tiny steps and accomplish them one at a time. Time is of the essence. Don’t waste it in doing something unproductive.

      1. 3. Tracks Your Progress

Goal setting can also act as a coach to track your progress. You have a fixed benchmark or target to aim at. You can measure your development from the start line and the distance to your goals you have covered so far.
It also allows you to re-evaluate your mistakes so you avoid them in the future. If you doing something and it is working, how are supposed to know if you don’t have a record?

      1. 4. Ensures That You Don’t Miss Out On Anything

In this busy, fast-paced it, it is only natural to miss out a few opportunities. But what if you miss out on something crucial? Instead of repenting and beating yourself up later, just take all the measures needed to avoid this ordeal. Goal setting will help you cover everything you want to do.
It will provide you a satisfactory feeling of doing something worthwhile in life. There is so much new and exciting happening in life. Grab every aspect of it and live your life to the fullest!

      1. 5. Helps You Stay Honest To Yourself

Momentarily you might want to do something but maybe that is not the true reflection of your passion. Acting on instincts might deter you from your career path. To help you stay honest you yourself and focused, goal setting can have a significant impact.

      1. 6. Helps You Understand Your Strengths And Leverage Them

    1. 1.Understanding business operations
    2. Knowledge of how businesses work will definitely help lawyers in understanding company operations. Especially in the case of corporate lawyers, understanding the clients’ perspective and intentions will help them develop a better solution. It also depends on what kind of MBA degree you are interested in. But for in-house lawyers, it is often encouraged to go to a business school.

As higher up you go on the corporate ladder, the more responsibilities are put on your shoulders. Your interactions with the management and senior officials will also increase. Business skills will prove invaluable in such cases. Various opportunities would also open up inside the company for you.

    3. 2. Business School environment
    4. The whole business school experience will help you shape a successful professional life. The curriculum in top schools consists of a lot of team presentations, business case analysis, etc. Your team orientation skills will be honed. You also get the opportunity to network with future business leaders. If you need any professional guidance these networks would really come in handy.

Whether you want a joint degree or go to business school later is totally up to you. A two-year MBA program is a big financial investment. But also attending a business school after a few years of work experience helps you make better contributions in the classroom and understand case studies.

    5. 3. Personal growth
    6. Apart from gaining academic knowledge, you would also improve your personal growth and development. You will feel even more confident in talking to clients and accomplishing their wishes through parameters of law. The evidence of having earned two degrees will reflect when you talk. You will make better contributions in the office, not only pertaining to your field but also understanding other sectors like marketing, finance, etc.

And if you are planning on opening your own firm, then learning how businesses function will help you build a strong foundation for your company. Knowing how and where to start will ensure a successful boost for a new firm.

    7. 4. Career prospects
    8. There is a huge demand for people with knowledge of both management and law in the industry. Especially in this globalizing economy, the combination of law and MBA proves beneficial across sectors like marketing, sales, finance, supply chains, etc.

This again depends on the kind of degree you are looking at and your field of interest. The track record for lawyers specializing in Mergers and Acquisitions, Banking and Finance, etc. and pursuing MBA has been successful. Switching career also becomes easy with dual degrees. If you planning on taking a managerial role, opening your own firm or changing career paths altogether, you have the necessary knowledge and skillset.

An MBA coupled with Law may not be for everyone. It is advisable to pursue an MBA only if you are passionate about business and learning these operations. That being said, it is a remarkable experience and a great way to expand your knowledge and network. You build your confidence and even though there might be a few tangible benefits, it is a fantastic opportunity for someone who has a passion for learning.
