Distilled, Purified, Alkaline, and Mineral Water in the Spotlight

Even in drinking waters, the market offers us one whole wheel of variation of the “same” product to the point that we’re almost drowned with our choices we don’t really get to purchase based on important facts such as- what are they made from together with the benefits and the possible “harms” that included in such particular kind of water processing, anymore- instead, all that is presented to us are shallow forms of basis such as how “refreshed” you can also be based on the commercial actor’s reaction from his first gulp from that drinking bottle. Yay!

You see, what Panlasang Pinoy is trying to tell you is that, since water is a very significant part of our every day- it is much important that one must be knowledgeable on the kind of drinking water that he/she is choosing. For it is in these small options- that we take part in every day, which are capable of shaping the most significant part of our future’s state of health.

With that, here we have compiled a list of must-know information regarding the top available drinking waters in the country- starting from the basic facts, to their health-centered advantages and disadvantages to the consumers, and lastly, Panlasang Pinoy will be rating them- solely and objectively based on all the collected information we have gathered.

So, what are we waiting for? To enjoy best delicacies from chicken meals to desserts, let us now go and explore what’s the best water they should go along with! Here we go.

Top Must-Know Facts About Drinking Waters: Distilled, Purified, Alkaline, and Mineral
  1. Distilled Water– One of the first few things we would want to know is how distilled waters are generally processed. (The used term is “generally” because, of course, there are highly particular variations that each brand of distilled water are implementing within their water processing).

First, the preparation starts with separating the H2O (water) molecules from all the possible contaminants. These contaminants come in forms of either metals or minerals in inorganic form. Since the identified contaminants have a higher boiling point than water, only the water resulted from steaming process within the standard water boiling point (100 °C/212°F), are the steam that is captured and cooled- thereafter, the one that’s called as the “distilled water”.

Moreover, do you know that this distilled water is like the “mother-form” of all the other types of drinking waters? Well, this is how…

Despite the above water processing, there are still some impurities in the water which possess a lower boiling point than water molecules per se, which means that the produced distilled water that we have in the first processing part, still has some unwanted compounds in it. Hence, that is why there are additional purification methods that are implemented- and the variation among these “additional purification methods” is what identifies if the resulting water is a purified, alkaline, or mineral water.

  • Absorbs as well as removes toxic substances
  • Doesn’t smell like chlorine although has a “flat taste”.
  • Prevents acquisition of possible unclean-water diseases.
  • Eliminates some pathogen found normally in tap waters- including parasites, viruses, and bacteria.
  • Removes heavy radioactive, unwanted organic and inorganic substances.
  • Eliminates naturally occurring minerals which are needed by the basic cellular functioning of the body.
  • Has an acidic pH level- what the body requires for stabilized and efficient functioning is a slightly alkaline pH level.
  • Might cause electrocyte imbalance due to removed minerals in the distillation process.
  • The distillation process is not that energy-efficient.
  • Regular consumers might acquire mineral deficiencies.
Panlasang Pinoy Rating:

4 out of 5- “Just Right”

  1. Purified Water- Among all the drinking waters here on the list, purified water is the one which undergoes the highest number of further purification method. In fact, the majority of these purified waters in the market uses up to 12 additional purification methods- mainly including deionization, reverse osmosis, and distillation.

For some degree, we could also identify distilled water as purified water- only that it’s purified water… on the making.

On the other hand, processing of many of the purified water is reported to consume less energy than the processing of distilled water.

  • Cleaner than distilled water.
  • There are absolutely no contaminants left in the resulting product.
  • Many possible purification processes are available.
  • Eliminates not only chlorine, iron, and even rust- but as well as particular kinds of bacteria that distilled water might have missed.
  • Totally free of bacteria!
  • Might cause electrocyte imbalance that might affect the body’s proper functioning.
  • Changes the water composition.
  • Positive ions are left in the water which might cause losing energy when absorbed in the body.
Panlasang Pinoy Rating:

4.8 out of 5- What else on the list could ever be better?

  1. Alkaline Water- There are many claims that most of the individual’s lifestyle nowadays is deemed to be leading to the “acidic” side due to the kind preferred food and beverages of ours. Therefore, we are in need of the kind of water which could neutralize this not-so-good living of ours. The neutralization that alkaline water is capable of doing is the one that’s responsible with the detoxification of the body within the cellular level- that’s detoxification at the deepest level, bro!

With alkaline water in the scene, less energy is needed for the body to perform such a critical function of neutralization.

Also, do you know that high mineral content is almost the same as “alkaline water” defined? Indeed!

  • Balances pH within the cellular level.
  • Causes the individual to be more energetic.
  • Incorporates a better and much-balanced lifestyle inside out!
  • Improves the rate of healing.
  • Safe for children since no additional chemicals are being added.
  • Prevents experiencing acid reflux.
  • Helps people seemingly age “slower” because of the elimination of toxic substances and other harmful chemicals.
  • Is still not capable of fully changing the stomach pH- therefore excess stomach acids could possibly be negated but stomach’s pH remains as acidic as originally it is.
  • Can lead to the development of minor gastrointestinal issues.
  • Can cause some forms of skin irritations.
  • Development of metabolic alkalosis is possible and could further lead to vomiting, hand tremors/muscle twitching, and a tingled sense in some parts of the face.
Panlasang Pinoy Rating:

4.8 out of 5- What else on the list could ever be better?

  1. Mineral Water- Mineral water, as the name suggests, is infused with different minerals- are gathered from mineral springs. Mineral springs produce water which has gone through various layers of earth which in itself gives us the hint with regard to the many possible minerals which could be found in it.

Ions which could be originally found in from mineral springs are potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium. These minerals are added up with another set based on the chosen process by a specific brand- vitamins could also be included.

  • Helps the supplementation of certain needed minerals which cannot be found in tap or even other kinds of processed waters.
  • Increases the level of minerals and vitamins in your body that could help you perform better.
  • Can be 4 times better in terms of minerals and vitamins that it could even serve as a temporary supplementation for one’s diet.
  • Helpful for pregnant women and even sick people who are in need of an additional source of nutrients such as those that are added within this drinking water.

Is good only for “supplementing” but not totally replacing the other sources for acquiring the nutrients that your body needs.

You could be getting “more” than what is advertised.

Panlasang Pinoy Rating:

4.9 out of 5- Heh, just when purified and alkaline thinks they’re the best…

The rating that we have used here is undeniably still subjected to a certain form of bias- still the best way to identify what kind of water is best for you is to first identify what is it that you really need: Are you experiencing acid reflux? Are you in need of additional vitamins and minerals? Ask yourself inquiries such as those. Again, since we are within different conditions which require us to go for a different kind of water- we ask you to acknowledge these Panlasang Pinoy Rating of us with a grain of salt.

We hope that you’ll choose your drinking water- and all the other health-concerning foods and beverages you need for every day the cautiousness and may you not be swayed with just what seems to be “popular”.

Remember that as Marcus Valerius Martialis states it: Life is not just about on merely surviving or keeping ‘alive’, rather it’s about being well which really makes life, living.

After that, voila, you’re all set- hopefully, you can feel your body’s way of saying thank you to you afterward.

The magic behind this is that apple is considered as a rich source of fiber- one of special kind called as pectin contains properties which improves the digestive processing of your body and at the same time, prevents the development of colon cancer cells.

First, mix the water and apple cider vinegar- add up honey afterward. Rinse your mouth thereafter to avoid any dental effects.

Like the suggested intake for the baking soda, you could also drink this one for around every morning, every day.

This concoction is a help because of the contained antioxidant and antibiotic properties especially coming from the apple cider vinegar- while toxins are eliminated, you could assure that your gut is healthy and efficiently functioning as well!

Aloe Vera Gel + Lemon Juice + Water

Prepare two teaspoons of lemons juice and mix it well with a cup of water. Afterward, add the 200 mg aloe vera gel and make sure to blend the mixture well.

After that, refrigerate and wait for a minimum of 4 hours before consumption.

How is this aloe vera juice a help for you?

Aloe Vera is known as a contributor to better bowel movements. In fact, with the presence of several nutrients- this aloe vera juice is considered as an exceptional natural detoxifier for your gut’s needs!

Did you know that you can earn through blogging? Oh yes, you can.

However, earning through blogging is not as easy as it seems. It does not mean that as long as you write something in your blog, money’s going to come in.  The thing you need to remember however, is that making money with your blog takes hard work, dedication, and patience.

It won’t happen overnight.

Got it?

Now, let’s walk you through the things you need to do, step-by-step.

Step 1: Website Scaffolding

Setting up a solid website would require these two basic elements:  a website host and a mailing list provider.

Website Host. A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients, as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. A good web host must be able to handle traffic well. It needs to be fast, and is convenient to set up.

For my websites I used Bluehost, they have very good deal that perfect for your blogging business.

Mailing List Provider. Email marketing is the ultimate key to a solid audience base. Your mailing list will be a vital source of targeted traffic and monetization, which you can tap into in an instant. Choose a reliable mailing list provider.

Step 2: Setting Up Your Website

A great blog or website needs to be strong, and reliable. However, it also needs to look good, and sound good – meaning, it should be marketable.

Choosing a Domain Name. Your domain name is your address in the Word Wide Web, say https://www.panlasangpinoyrecipes.com/ that’s a domain name, an address to a specific website in the vast web.  An ideal domain name should:

  • Roll easily off the tongue – it needs to be easy to say, to spell and to type;
  • Be memorable – it might be tempting to go for something long and detailed but keep in mind how memorable that will be to your readers. A shorter, snappier URL is much more likely to be remembered;
  • Reflect your topic – think about what you’re going to be writing about. If it’s about blogging, consider incorporating that word into your URL somewhere. This will make it easier to find and will give readers an idea of what they’re likely to expect.

Registering a Domain Name. You can use independent domain registration sites like Namecheap to register your domain. Then, you add it to your hosting package. But there are web hosting providers where you can register your domain name on top of your hosting package (like BlueHost or HostGator).

Content Management Systems. Content management systems (CMS), also known as “blogging platform”, helps you curate your content and build how your website will look like. There are many CMS to choose from. The more popular of these are WordPress, Blogger by Google, Drupal, and Joomla. Don’t worry, web hosting providers have one-click installation options for these CMS.

I personally recommend WordPress. It is incredibly easy to design with and make your own. There are plenty of resources about building a WordPress site – impressive plugins, beautiful themes, and awesome flexibility.

Step 3: Creating Content

Content is king. And, content marketing is leading the way. Your content is your connection to your audience. Content is the fuel of your site.

Content Marketing. The key thing to remember in content marketing is your audience. Who are they? What problems do they have? What questions are they asking? What are their pain points? Effective content is the kind of content that alleviates pain.

Here’s a few ways you can do all these:

  • Create personas of your ideal reader. Flesh it out with everything about this person and use it as a guide.
  • Research where your ideal reader hangs out online and listen in on their conversations.
  • Conduct a survey asking your ideal reader what they struggle with and write posts about the answers to their questions.

Niche Content. The catch about blogging is that there are plenty of content online, and it is basically extra difficult to stand out and build a good following. The key is to provide a unique, niche content – the sort of niche where only a few dare discuss.

Research about what people are looking for and how the current web contents address this inquiries. You can use Google AdWords, and other keyword research tools.

Step 4: Generating Traffic

The success of your site, in terms of monetizing it, lies not only in your content, but more so in the number of people who come in, stay, and come back to your site – we call that traffic. Indeed, driving traffic requires more work – from creating content, to getting this great content to people.

The major sources of traffic are the organic (search-engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing), social (from Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.), referral (referred through other websites), and direct traffic (when visitors go to your page directly by typing in your web address).

Prioritize your social and organic traffic.

Social Media Traffic. Social Media has the potential to open up your content to a whole tribe of interested people. With the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest, sweeping the world with their massive networking potential, it’s fairly easy to be found and heard.

Search-engine Optimization (SEO). When a user go to Google, or Yahoo and try to look for something, your goal is that your website comes at the very first page of the search-engine results page (SERPs). An SE-optimized website is favored by these search-engines, and display them in the front pages.

Optimization is a tedious task and it’s a long-term goal. The most basic SEO hack is keywords, and quality. The emphasis is more on quality and value but there are still things you can do to encourage a better performance:

  • Research keywords using sites like Google Keyword Planner to find out what people are searching for, in relation to your niche
  • Add your keyword naturally into your post title
  • Use your keyword sparingly within the body of your post
  • Place your keyword in the title and alt title of any images you’re using within that post
  • Use the keyword in your meta description (while this is no longer a factor in search engine optimization, it’s still useful to do this to prompt readers to click-through)

Email Marketing. Every blogger must be diligent enough to keep a list of their subscribers and make sure they stay in touch with your blog. You can send them interesting updates on a daily, bi-weekly, or monthly basis, and keep them interested with your site. This is the key to maintaining a solid readership, and ensure sustained traffic to your site.

Step 5: Monetization

Now, how do bloggers earn through blogging? Well, there are a number of ways such as advertising, and affiliate marketing.

Advertising. Advertising is one of the most common ways to monetize your blog and can come in various formats such as:

  • Banner advertising – such as Google AdSense, Bing, Facebook and other ad platforms
  • InfoLinks – You can earn more money with Infolinks
  • Sponsored reviews – whereby you’re paid to review a product or service in return to for you honest opinion
  • Sponsored posts – in this instance a brand or PR will pay for you to write about their product or service and include a link back to their website (be sure to no-follow any paid links to stay within Google’s guidelines and best practices)

Affiliate Marketing. Affiliate marketing  placing a banner or a link within a post / somewhere on your blog, which links back to a product or service. When someone purchases through your link, you’ll earn a commission.

There are many affiliate marketing programs you can tap:

The key with affiliate programs is to just promote products you would endorse and actually use yourself. But remember to keep whatever it is you want to market as an affiliate relevant to your audience, otherwise, you’ll end up a failure.

Product Creation. You can use a blog, or a website to sell something. Your website will serve as an online product description or brochure of whatever product you want to sell such as eBooks, videos, elearning materials, whitepapers, and many more.

Freelancing. Your blog can also serve as a broadcasting platform. If you have a business on the side of your day job, or you have it full-time, you can use a blog to promote whatever it is that you do.

Here’s what you could offer as a freelancer from your blog:

For the Sauce
  • 2 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp. granulated sugar (turbinado, coconut or organic brown sugar all work)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp. chilled water
  • 1 tsp. cornstarch

For the Stir-Fry

  • 1-8 oz. package seitan strips (or make your own )
  • 2 tbsp. cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp. freshly grated ginger
  • 2-3 dried chili peppers, halved (optional)
  • 2 scallions, cut into 1 inch pieces

For Serving

  • Cooked rice or rice noodles
  1. Make the sauce by stirring soy sauce, sugar and 1/4 cup of water or broth together in a small bowl. Stir cornstarch and chilled water together in a small cup. Set aside.
  2. Drain the seitan and discard liquid. Place cornstarch into a medium bowl and add seitan strips. Toss to coat.
  3. Coat the bottom of a large skillet with oil and place over medium-high heat. Add seitan in as even a layer as possible. Cook until strips are browned and crisp on bottoms, about 4-5 minutes. Flip and cook 4-5 minutes more, until strips are crispy on opposite sides. Remove seitan from skillet and transfer to a paper-towel lined plate.
  4. Lower heat to medium. Add garlic, ginger and dried chilies, if using, to skillet. Sauté 2 minutes, until very fragrant and chilies begin to darken a bit. Return seitan to skillet with sauce, cornstarch mixture and scallions. Flip a few times to coat, and cook just until sauce becomes very thick, about 2 minutes.
  5. Divide noodles or rice onto plates and top with seitan. Serve immediately.

  • 1-2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (or more to taste)

  3. Serve hot over plain, cooked quinoa
  4. Tip: double the recipe so you can freeze for another meal.

  • 3 pounds boneless beef chuck (well-marbled), cut into 1-1/2-inch pieces
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 medium yellow onions, cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 7 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups dry red wine
  • 2 cups beef broth (I like the Pacific organic brand)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons sugar
  • 4 large carrots, peeled and cut into one-inch chunks on a diagonal
  • 1 pound small white boiling potatoes (baby yukons), cut in half
  • Fresh chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)
  1. Preheat oven to 325°F with rack in middle.
  2. Pat beef dry and season salt and pepper. In a large Dutch oven or heavy pot, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat until hot and shimmering. Brown meat in 3 batches, turning with tongs, about 5-8 minutes per batch, adding one tablespoon more oil for each batch. (To sear meat properly, do not crowd the pan and let meat develop brown crust before turning with tongs.) Transfer meat to a large plate and set aside.
  3. Add onions, garlic and balsamic vinegar; cook, stirring with a wooden spoon to scrape brown bits from bottom of pan, about 5 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook a few minutes more. Add beef with juices back to pan and sprinkle with flour; stir with wooden spoon until flour is dissolved, 1-2 minutes. Add wine, beef broth, water, bay leaf, thyme, and sugar; stir with wooden spoon to loosen any brown bits from bottom of pan and bring to a boil. Cover pot with lid, transfer to preheated oven and braise for 2 hours.
  4. Remove pot from oven and add carrots and potatoes. Cover and place back in oven for 50-60 minutes more, or until vegetables are cooked and meat is very tender. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary (freshly ground black pepper and a pinch of sugar go a long way). Let cool, then store in refrigerator overnight or until ready to serve. This stew improves in flavor if made at least 1 day ahead. Reheat, covered, over medium heat or in a 350°F oven. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Top 10 Cancer Causing Foods

Cancer is a disease that you should never take lightly. There are cases where it strikes quickly but often, cancer manifests after years of specific habits. Good examples of this are smoking and overexposure to ultraviolet rays, which result in lung cancer and skin cancer, respectively.

Experts estimate that more than half the cases of cancer diagnosed in the United States – more than 1.6 million in 2014 – are preventable with lifestyle changes.

There is one area of your daily life that dramatically affects your – and survival – of cancer. The food and beverages you consume, the fuel your body uses to fight disease, is critical to your overall wellbeing. Some foods are worse for you than others and could be increasing your risk of many conditions and diseases. While cancer is one of the worst, regularly eating the foods in our top ten list can also lead to heart disease, diabetes, and chronic inflammation.

Top Ten Cancer Causing Foods to Avoid 1. Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs).

In order to make crops more resistant to pests, scientists insert a special gene, called Bt-toxin – derived from Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria – into corn and cotton plants. The toxin attacks the stomach lining of nibbling insects, killing the pests within a couple of days of ingestion. More than 65 percent of U.S. corn crops contain this special gene that produces the insecticide.

Another alarming fact: 80% of the processed food items in your local supermarket contain genetically modified ingredients. This means that if you are a U.S. resident, you are undoubtedly eating genetically modified foods.

These genetically modified foods have been sneaking into our diets since 1995, when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) analyzed the first genetically engineered plant – corn. Today, 90% of several U.S. crops are grown with genetically engineered seed.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are “organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in such a way that it does not occur naturally.” Scientists insert a gene from one organism into another to “improve” or change the organism.

2. Microwave Popcorn

Microwave popcorn is subject to a wide-ranging lung cancer debates around the world. Not only are the kernels and oil likely GMO (which the manufacturer does not have to disclose) unless organic, but the fumes released from artificial butter flavoring contain diacetyl, which is toxic to humans.
