Valid
Having an Intimate Knowledge

Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?

John 14:9

These words were spoken by Jesus to Philip. They had been traveling together, Philip had heard the parables, seen the miracles – they were friends. As close as they were, there was more to come, a deeper connection to experience. In John 15:15, Jesus tells the disciples He is their friend.

We use that term – friend - loosely these days and call acquaintances and people we are connected to on social media our friends. But a true friend is someone you have a deep fellowship with by communicating with one another. It is someone who knows you and chooses to stick with you. That is who Jesus is. He knows us – every ugly detail about us. He has seen us at our very worst and stayed. He has promised to never leave us or forsake us. Even when we did not love Him, He loved us and chose to go to the cross for us.

I spent most of my life declaring that I had an intimate relationship with Christ – when I really did not. I didn’t know what I didn’t know – and one thing I didn’t know was there was more – so much more. I declared I lived for the Lord, but I was really living for me. Spending time in God’s word changed that for me. I don’t mean reading a verse of the day or a 3 paragraph devotional. I mean actually opening my Bible and studying God’s word for myself.

We say we want to please the Lord, we want to do what God would have us to do, we just want to know His will for our life. Well, God is pleased when we make it a priority to come to know Jesus more and more. You see, the more we come to know Him, the more we experience Him and the more we long to be with Him. When we get into the Word, it gets into us and we cannot remain the same. We are changed. As John the Baptist said in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” We must value Jesus more than we value our thoughts, opinions, popularity, possessions, status and dreams.

In the verses following the one at the top of this page, Jesus goes on to tell the disciples that the Holy Spirit dwells within them, that He is their Helper and will abide with them forever. In verse 21 He declares, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” Judas asked Him how would He do that? (I bet you thought the same thing.) In verse 23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” When we obey His commandments, we will experience a more intimate knowledge of Jesus. We will know Him more which will lead us to want to know Him even more. On and on until we see Him face to face.

I know I talk – well, write – about this a lot. It is my heart’s desire to inspire you to know Jesus in an intimate way, to experience His presence and to rest in the knowledge that He is with you. I long for you to be so overwhelmed by this intimate knowledge of Him that you are propelled to share it with others who will become overwhelmed by this intimate knowledge of Him and will be propelled to share it with others who will become overwhelmed and on and on and on.

Nothing Could Matter More

We think we know Jesus and we fool ourselves into believing we are living for Him, when we are just living for ourselves. We think we know all we need to know, when we don’t know very much. We become satisfied with milk and do not realize we crave solid food.

This morning I flipped open “Saved by Grace, Now What?” and these lines in the book I wrote stared me in my face and stopped me in my tracks. They leapt off the page and I couldn’t see around them. Lift your eyes and read those lines again. Is that you? Is that me? Are we just going through the motions, pretending that we are living for Jesus while we are preoccupied with getting our way, doing our own will and trusting in ourselves more than we do Jesus? Are we surviving on the milk or basic truths we learned long ago and not making time to devour the meat of God’s word?

We need to get it. We need to get it so we can share it with others. This life is not about us; it is all about honoring God, knowing Him and sharing the hope of Jesus. That’s it!

When we stand in front of the Great I Am, what do you think He will ask? How much money did you make? How many followers did you have on Instagram? What was your Body Mass Index? How many square feet was your house? What was your title at work? What did people say about you? Were you nice? How young did you look? How attractive were you? Were your children happy? Did you have wrinkles? Tell me about the parties you hosted. Did people treat you well? Did you have everything you wanted? Hmm…… NO! How silly. We live as if what is not important, matters a great deal and as if what matters most, doesn’t.

Serious question… what do you elevate and make a big deal that simply is not a big deal? What are you focusing on and giving your time to that at the end of your life will not matter at all? How do you spend your time? How much of it are you using to honor God and share Jesus? There is more! There is so much more than just walking in and out of a Sunday morning service. Time is ticking, this life is short.

Look around you – things are not okay. People need Jesus. They need you to know Him – really know Him. When you know Him and elevate Him to the proper position in your life, you will quit worrying about you. When that happens, you can hear Him more and you will learn to and want to share Jesus with others. It starts here. It starts with us. It starts now.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.”
— Matthew 6:33 CSB

Are you ready? Are you ready to invest time to know Jesus more? Yes! Yes! Yes! Let’s say Yes! There is no excuse, no exception, no way around it. It is time. Let’s do it. Let’s do it together! What could be more important?

You see there is a paradigm shift that must take place. We must shift from being self-absorbed to being consumed with Him. (Saved by Grace, Now What?)

Get ready! The minute you say, YES! the battle will begin. Satan will do all he can to thwart your quest, derail you, and distract you from your journey to more with Jesus. The path will be treacherous, yet it will be the best, most beautiful journey of your life. (The battle has begun… Before I could safe this post, our electricity went out. When it came back up, Word had recovered it but I couldn’t save it. I tried to relaunch Word and it said I needed to purchase. On and on…. I chose to practice what I preach and trust God. Well, obviously He took care of it because here is the post. Praise Him!)

Let’s link arms and do this together! Let’s create a community where we grow and change and come to know Jesus more and more intimately and then inspire those around us to do the same. Can we do that? Let’s do that! I am not sure how to do that, but I am passionate about it! Aren’t you? I feel God leading us in this direction, so I will be in prayer about it and see what God reveals. In the meantime, make sure you and your friends are subscribed to this blog, follow Master What Matters on Facebook and Instagram. Let’s stay connected and start this journey – nothing could matter more

Jesus has more for you. He is everything and wants to be your everything. Let’s move toward Him.

Having Everything Means Having Jesus

There have been times in my life when it felt as if I had lost everything. There have been seasons in my life that required me to give everything I had. There have been some long dark nights where I have pleaded for God to do everything because I could do nothing.

When you look at this beautiful pic of this precious family of mine – it appears that I have everything. What you don’t see are the hard times that caused us to embrace one another; the struggles that shattered us and forced us to allow God to put us back together; the tears that taught of about prayer and God’s faithfulness and goodness.

We are not perfect, we are flawed. We don’t have it all together, we are broken. The beauty in this picture has nothing to do with who we are - but everything to do with whose we are. We are His and He is ours. You see – Jesus is everything. He is the goodness that resides within us. He is the grace that allows us to love one another. He is the strength that binds us. He is the love that surrounds us. He is everything!

Earlier this year I found myself in despair – hurting and confused and crying out to God. I had questions. I asked, Who are you? He replied, Everything. What do have for me? He said, Everything. What do you want from me? Again, He answered, Everything. All of my blog posts since mid-March have revolved around EVERYTHING. (If you can relate, start in March and read what God is showing me about… well… everything.)

Jesus is everything!

He is everything and He has more for us – more to become, more to do, more to learn. There will be more hard days – but regardless we have Everything to carry us through. If today you feel lost, or burdened or longing for more, cry out and ask Him those same 3 questions. He is everything you have ever wanted and everything you will ever need. He has everything for you – all He has is yours. And He wants you to give Him everything – your life, your family, your dreams – everything. When we do – He will do exceeding abundantly above all we ask, think or even dare to imagine.

“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:14-21

How Do We Share Jesus with Others?

When was the last time you shared Jesus with someone? How often do you sit and have conversations about Him? Do you cause people to be attracted to Jesus or do your words and actions repel them away? Those are tough questions, aren’t they? We would love to be able to say that we are sharing Jesus, witnessing to the lost and seeing multitudes turn to Him. But the truth is, most of us simply are not doing what God has asked us to do.

We have been talking about what God wants from us. I believe He wants our time, He wants our heart and He wants us to tell others the Good News. Jesus was questioned by a lawyer who was testing Him. The lawyer asked Jesus, “which is the greatest commandment in the law?”. Jesus responded in Matthew 22:37-38:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

So if… and that feels like a really big ifthese days… but, if we love God with all of our heart, soul and mind, and if we love our neighbors as ourselves – wouldn’t we want to share with them what we have? I mean, we say that our relationship with Jesus is the most important thing in our lives – so how can we keep it to ourselves? In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus tells us to go into all the world sharing the gospel and teaching them what the Bible says. How are we (us – me and you) doing with that one? Okay – so how can we do what Jesus has asked us to do?

We can begin by making sure we are in love with Jesus and not simply defensive when it comes to our religion. You see, God hates religion. He has never asked us to become more religious – He wants an intimate relationship with us. All healthy relationships are based on two people who put the other one before themselves. Jesus has demonstrated His selflessness - have we? He has proved His devotion to us – have we? He has laid His life down for us – have we done the same for Him? Once we do those things – we have nothing to defend, nothing to argue about. We simply have something so incredible we cannot keep it to ourselves.

Sharing Jesus is simply an invitation to experience His love, His goodness and His faithfulness. It is never an argument. It is an explanation of what the Bible says, what we believe and what we have personally found to be true. We share and invite others to hear more; going deeper when they are ready. Share a little – if they ask questions, keep going. If not, wait for another day and try again. In the meantime, share a little with someone else. If we ask God to give us opportunities to share and to put the words in our mouth that we should say – He will. We just have to be willing to do it.

What does God want from us? He wants our time – so put Him first. He wants our heart – so love Him the most. And He wants us to share Him with others – so tell of His goodness. Let’s obey the great commandment and go fulfill the great commission.

What’s the Condition of Your Heart?

We want to be a picture of great health, strong and mighty, living a long life filled with purpose and making a difference in the lives of others. And when our time comes to leave this place, we want our eulogy to be about our heart for God, the difference we made in the lives of others and the impact we left on the next generation. Oh yes, that is our desire, our heart’s desire – but sister, it ain’t gonna happen that way if we are gossiping, eating ice cream every night, spending countless hours scrolling social media, binge watching the housewives of everywhere, while our coffee cup sits perched on top of our Bible.

Just like it takes effort and intentionality to get fit – it takes effort and intentionality to surrender our whole heart to God. Can you spend some time and really determine what’s the condition of your heart? If it were a pie chart, what percentage is filled with Jesus? What is there, tucked away in the corners of your heart that you are clinging to and letting come between you and your King? Are you filled with anything – anger, bitterness, ambition, resentment, loss, envy, heartbreak, control, arrogance, selfishness – other than Him?

If you answered no – go look again. None of us are pure in heart, yet – but, we will be one glorious day. Hallelujah!!! We have got to learn how to be honest with ourselves during times of introspection. It is imperative that we do this or there can be no growth – no sanctification. When we live in denial about our sin, when we continually blame others and justify our bad behavior – our heart condition is serious.

Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness;
give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

Psalm 86:11

How can we change the condition of our heart? To change the condition of our heart physically – we need to get to work! We need to eat right and exercise regularly. We need to get moving! We tend to think in the same terms when it comes to the spiritual condition of our heart. We think we need to do this and do that – to earn it, but that is simply not true. Jesus has already done what needed to be done. The condition of our heart will change when we stop striving and start surrendering.

How do we surrender our whole heart to Jesus?

·      We let go and let God have everything – our hopes, dreams, marriage, children, career, thoughts, plans, ideas… everything. And… we trust Him with them.

·      We get in the Word – reading and studying and getting to know Him more and more – which empowers us to release more to Him.

·      We develop intimacy with Jesus and make Him the King of our Heart – walking with Him and talking with Him and understanding that in the midst of everything crazy in our lives – He is enough.

What does God want from us? Everything. How can you let Him have everything, or at least start your journey of giving Him everything – today? It won’t be easy; Satan will do His best to make it hard. But… keep going. As we surrender, we will gain love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control – taking us closer and closer to the pure in heart condition we desire.

It Takes Time to Develop Intimacy

God wants our time. Not only does He want time, but He wants alone time with each of us. Why? Because it takes one on one time to develop intimacy and He wants an intimate relationship with His children. Spending time alone offers the opportunity to get to know Him in a deeper, more intimate way. You see, He knows us and He wants us to know Him as we are known. In the Old Testament, God called the prophets to come to Him alone. Moses and David spent time alone with God and no doubt experienced intimacy with Him. Then there is the example Jesus set for us when time and time again He spent time alone with God. It takes time to develop intimacy – which means it happens over time, but it also requires that we commit time to Him.

So many times, we search for the right devotional to read during our quiet time. But I encourage you to just grab your Bible, go to a special quiet place in your house, and sit with your Savior. If you don’t know what to read, don’t have a book you want to study, start by reading all the red words in your Bible. Who was Jesus? What did He say? Or maybe read the Book of John and learn all about Jesus’ life. And – if you struggle with reading the Bible – grab you a copy of The Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd Jones. (I read it to my grandchildren, but keep reading long after they fall asleep. ;-)) Read a story there and then go find it in your big girl Bible and read about it. Let the words in His Word come alive inside of you.

Please, don’t be so busy that you deny yourself the most incredible experience you can have. There is nothing like experiencing the presence of the Lord. Be still and quiet, clear your mind, open your hands and be ready to fellowship with Him. Be alone with Him. His word says, Be still and know that I am God. Still your body, still your thoughts – He is waiting. Developing intimacy is absolutely worth investing your time in this relationship. David was intimate with the Lord. Here is a passage that gives us a glimpse what that intimacy looks like…

“God, you are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh longs for you in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory. Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.” Psalm 63:1-8

We want that, don’t we? We want to know that no matter where we are and what we are doing, He is there. And we don’t just want the head knowledge that it is true, we want to feel His presence. He wants that, too. He wants us to know how deeply He loves us and that we have Him. Just like we are His, He is ours. He will walk with us and talk with us, once we start walking with Him and talking to Him. Intimacy is ours when we invest the time to develop it. No relationship can grow when it is one sided. It takes two committed parties.

It takes time to develop intimacy. And no matter how intimate you believe that you are with God – there is more. There is more and more and more and more – all the way until we see Him face to face. How can you know Him more today?

What Does God Want from Me?

Do you ever find yourself asking the question, “What does God want from me?” Do you ponder it, google it and look up scriptures about it? Do you drive down the road or stand in the shower and audibly ask, “Seriously God, what do You want from me?”

We act as if we don’t know, as if we just cannot understand. But we do know – don’t we? It is not as hard as we make it out to be. Maybe the truth is if we acknowledge that we do know what He wants, then we will be held accountable for not giving it to Him. Is that it?

Do we fear that He is asking too much of us? Surely, we do not think that He is asking us to give up more than He has to give to us. We have heard over and over again that we cannot out give God.

What is it? What causes us to look up to the heavens and inquire, What do You want from me? What stops us from giving in and giving Him all that He has asked? Why is it that we hold back and are not completely honest with ourselves – as if we can keep anything from Him?

If you have read my last 2 months of blogs – you have probably already guessed the answer. We have talked about who God is and we have come to the realization that He is everything. He is everything we have ever wanted and everything we will ever need. We talked about what He has for us and discovered that He has given us everything. He has given us His presence, His provision and His promises. And now, here we are pondering, what do You want from me, and it is a simple one-word answer… EVERYTHING!

It makes sense, doesn’t it. He has given us everything and now He is asking the same in return. He was crucified for our transgressions and now He is asking us to die to our flesh for Him. He rose again and is alive and is preparing a place for us and He asks us to live for Him. Every good and perfect gift is from above and He asks us to use our gifts for Him. He loves us and wants an intimate relationship with us and now He asks that we love Him like that.

He wants everything. Are you ready to give Him everything? Are you still struggling with it? Maybe feeling unworthy, scared, unsure? So was Paul. Paul’s past was wretched; we don’t have anything on him. Yet, God chose to use Paul in ways He never dared to imagine. He wanted everything from Paul, just like He wants everything from us. And still, Paul teaches us in Philippians that his greatest achievement – that life’s greatest achievement for us all - is to know Christ. To know Christ intimately is EVERYTHING and requires that we surrender everything to Him.

that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection

Philippians 3:10

Let’s keep talking about it. How do we give God what He wants? Meet me back here – same time, same place next week and we will continue the conversation.

(Btw… I love hearing from you – comment below if you feel so led.)

Choose Discernment

We hold our feelings and our opinions in high regard, don’t we? We start many of our sentences with I feel and In my opinion. We believe that our feelings and our opinions matter. But, do they really? When making decisions or walking the path God has for us to walk, should we lean into our feelings and our opinions? No way. Our feelings are not trustworthy, and our opinions are limited and simply a judgment call, at best.

As we study the Bible we learn about discernment. Discernment trumps feelings and opinions every single time. What is discernment? I asked my 11 year old granddaughter if she knew what discernment was and she answered, “Wisdom from God”. So, with that definition let’s ask ourselves – do our feelings and our opinions matter or is it discernment – aka, the wisdom of God - that matters?

Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;

whoever is discerning, let him know them;

for the ways of the Lord are right,

and the upright walk in them,

but transgressors stumble in them.

Hosea 14:9

Oh, we want His wisdom, don’t we? But when something comes our way, we immediately rely on our own opinions and feelings, which are heavily influenced by the world. Shouldn’t we stop that and instead learn to immediately seek wisdom from above? In James 1:5, we read that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God and He will give generously without judging.

Discernment comes when we learn to put Jesus first and foremost in our lives, when we value God’s word so much that we make time to study it and when we seek wisdom from above instead of phoning a friend or hopping on Google. Let’s choose discernment. Ready?

Today, let’s ask God for wisdom and discernment. Let’s seek to live a life that is pleasing to Him. Let’s check ourselves and let go of deceitful feelings and opinions and instead trust the only One who is trustworthy. And all God’s people said, Amen!

He Promised - That Settles It

Do you believe He will do what He has promised to do? Do you believe that God is who He says He is? Do you wait confidently, knowing He will fulfill His promises to you? Somedays are harder than others, aren’t they? I mean… we say we believe, but then why are we discouraged and doubtful? Do we struggle with unbelief? That is a hard pill to swallow – but if we believe His promises then we will have peace, rest and joy.

One reason we struggle to find that peace, rest and joy is that we are still trying to place our faith in this world. People will fail us, disappoint us, and blame us. As we compare with our own limited perspective, we misplace our discouragement on God instead of where it belongs. We know better! However, we want to believe that if I am good, life will be easy. But… God never promised that, did He? No. He promised that we would have times of tribulation, but even in the midst of those times, we can experience peace through Jesus. We can be confident and courageous because He has overcome the world. (John 16:33)

Every promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus. In Hebrews 1:3, we read that Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory. He is the prerequisite to the fulfillment of God’s promises in our lives. Once we have Jesus – we have security of all that God has promised. We have been promised salvation (Romans 1:16-17), a new life (2 Corinthians 5:17), eternity with Him (John 4:14) and security (John 10:28).

We forget that our time here is short. This life is not supposed to be “all about me”. It should be about living to glorify God, loving Him with all our heart, soul and mind and loving others so we can share Him with them. As we do, we are promised abundant life (John 10:10). People think that when you live for Jesus you give up all the fun – but in reality – if you are surrendered to Him – you start learning what fun really is. The boring, mundane life is left behind.

Easier said than done? Well, no worries. He has promised to use everything we go through for our good (Romans 8:28), transforming us (Philippians 1:6) and meeting our needs (Matthew 6:33) (Philippians 4:19). When we need relief, He offers rest (Matthew 11:28-30), peace (Philippians 4:6-7), comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) and every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). We have an inheritance waiting on us in heaven (1 Peter 1:4), a place has been prepared for us (John 14:2-3) and one day He is coming with the clouds. (Revelation 1:7) Can you imagine? When Jesus entered Jerusalem, He rode a donkey, but when He returns He will be on a white horse (Revelation 19:11) with all His angels (Matthew 25:31). Every eye will see (Revelation 1:7), every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! (Philippians 1:10-11)

He promised, that settles it!

(Did you know - there are thousands of promises in the Bible. Each one is yours. They aren’t for everyone else, they are for you. Write them out, placing your name in them and read them aloud. Read them and believe them. You can stand on the promises of God.)

Shift Your Thoughts

How can we complain or feel like we have lost something, when we have been given everything? Why is it so easy to whine and complain and focus on what we think we need, but do not have? Have we forgotten what God has done for us and what His grace offers to us? “What?”, you ask? Everything! He offers us everything. It is all right in front of us. His arms are extended and He is holding out to us everything we need. Yet, our arms are filled with all the wrong things, preventing us from receiving all that is ours.

Can you see it? Pause and be honest with yourself about all that God has promised. We believe the Bible to be true, so those promises must be ours. So… He waits. He waits to give us all that He has promised us until we lay down all that we struggle to carry. As long as we cling to our negativity - complaining, worrying, searching – our arms are too full to accept the gifts of His provision.

So what is it that we are denying ourselves?

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Matthew 6:33

And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. Psalm 21:1

He did not even spare his own Son but offered him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything? Romans 8:32

A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance. John 10:10

God has promised to provide for us all that we need. He has granted us everything – all the things – every. single. thing. We only need to shift our minds and place our focus on all that He has done. This has been on my mind recently as I have become aware that I, too, complain. (Yikes – introspection is just simply, No Fun!)

Just this morning I was listening to a podcast when I heard a quote from Joyce Meyer, “Complain and remain. Praise and be raised.” That is so true isn’t it? Complaining keeps us stuck in the mire. But when we shift our focus to who God is and all that He has done, how can we not praise Him? And as we praise Him - our thoughts are lifted, our perspective is raised and we step up out of the mire and onto higher ground. It is the higher ground, the place of abundant living where God has called us to live.

I choose abundant living. I choose contentment. I choose joy. What about you? Shift your thoughts and see all that God has waiting for you.
