66 YEARS OF (PRACTICAL, PURE, SERIOUS) AGRICULTURE, LACED WITH ORIGINAL POETRY, HUMOR AND STORYIN’ FROM THIS SOUTHERN FARM BOY/AG-MAN!!!

MY NAME IS DANNY JOE POTTER; I AM “JUST JOE” AND I CARRY A VERY HARD, PURE, REAL, TRUE, SERIOUS LOVE, “ADDICTION” FOR AGRICULTURE AND DO KNOW THE IMPORTANCE/VALUE OF AGRICULURE TO THE WORLD AND OUR UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND OUR EXISTANCE!!!

AS THE TITLE INSISTS, I WAS BORN INTO AGRICULTURE, GREW UP IN AGRICULTURE AND HAVE CHOSEN, TO MAKE AGRICULTURE MY LIFE’S WORK, STILL.  I WAS BORN ON A DIVERSIFIED FAMILY FARM (CHICKENS, CATTLE AND CROPS) IN RURAL LAWRENCE COUNTY, ALABAMA NEAR “OUR” FLAT ROCK.
I ATTENDED AND GRADUATED FROM HATTON HIGH SCHOOL, NORTHWEST ALABAMA STATE JUNIOR COLLEGE, PHIL CAMPBELL, ALABAMA, AUBURN UNIVERSITY, AUBURN ALABAMA, AND MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY, STARKVILLE MISSISSIPPI.  YET, TODAY AT 66 I AM STILL A STUDENT OF AGRICULTURE, WITH THE DESIRE TO LEARN DAILY.  MY LIFE’S PROPHESY HAS BEEN TO SERVE OR TEACH, AS A DADDY, HUSBAND, COACH, SUNDAY SCHOOL, AG TEACHER, AG PR MAN AND COUNTY AGENT.

I  HAVE WORKED IN AGRICULTURE ALL MY LIFE, EVEN AS A TEENAGER. TODAY, MY SAYIN’ IS---I HAVE BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, GATHERED EGGS, HAND PULLED EAR CORN, PLOWED THE LAND, DRIVEN A TRACTOR ALL MY LIFE, HAULED HAY, CHOPPED, PICKED AND PACKED COTTON, WRANGLED COWS AND HOGS, CASTURATED PIGS, SCOOPED AND HAULED CHICKEN LITTER AND PULLED MANY CALVES. HECK, I DO KNOW THAT I COULD, THIS DAY, STILL FLAT AND BOX FRESH EATIN’ HEN EGGS PROBABLY IN MY SLEEP, CUT FIREWOOD, ETC., ETC. AND SO MUCH MORE.  NO TWO DAYS ON THE FARM ARE THE SAME AND CHORES VARY DAY TO DAY.
MOST OF MY HIGH SCHOOL BUDDIES BELIEVED THAT BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE AN OFF THE FARM SUMMER JOB AS A TEENAGER, THAT I ACTUALLY HAD IT CUSHY IN SUMMER, ON OUR FARM, HA, HA!   BEYOND LOTS OF FARM WORK, MY DADDY AND I HAD LOTS OF FUN ALSO, WE WOULD COOK, PLAY BALL, DO CARPENTRY PROJECTS, TARGET SHOOT OUR GUNS AND GO HUNTIN’ (QUAIL, SQUIRREL, DEER AND RABBIT). WE ALSO RODE OUR HORSES FOR FUN AND TO RELAX.
I  PLAYED YOUTH AND HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS, I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD VERY LITTLE ABILITY, HOWEVER, AS A RATHER “BUFF” FARM BOY, I HAD LOTS OF HEART, PREPARED FOR EVERY GAME AND I ONLY PLAYED FOR ONE REASON, “I PLAYED TO WIN”.   BEYOND SPORTS, I WAS INVOLVED IN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, 4-H CLUB AND FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA, (FFA) PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS.

I LOVE PEOPLE, WE HAVE A SAYIN’---“THE MORE FOLK THE MERRIER” AT OUR POTTER’S MUD CREEK FARM AND “CABIN”.   I HAVE AN ABUNDANCE OF COMMON SENSE, AM A FORWARD THINKER; HAVE A PURE/REAL SENSE OF HUMOR, INFECTIN’ PERSONALITY HA!  AUTHOR, HUMORIST, POET, SPEAKER, WRITER, AND PURE STORYER, I USUALLY HAVE A PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW AND TEND TO EXPRESS MY FEELIN’S OR CONCERNS ON ISSUES ESPECIALLY RELATED TO AGRICULTURE…
I AM A SERIOUS ACTIVIST/ADVOCATE FOR AGRICULTURE, ITS VALUE AND IMPORTANCE TO OUR PUE EXISTANCE.
I HAVE WORKED ON MY FAMILY FARM OR OWNED A FARM AND FARMED MY ENTIRE LIFE.  MY AGRICULTURE CAREER PATH STARTED AND MIGRATED THROUGH THE FOLLOWING---AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION TEACHER/ FFA ADVISOR, AUBURN JUNIOR HIGH, AUBURN, ALABAMA, (1 YEAR), COUNTY AGENT FOR 4-H, (3 YEARS), AREA EXTENSION AGENT, COTTON PRODUCTION, PEST MANAGEMENT AND PESTICIDE EDUCATION, (16 YEARS), COUNTY AGENT CROPS AND LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION, (7 YEARS).  AT 49 I WAS OFFERED EARLY RETIREMENT, 26 YEARS FROM AUBURN UNIVERSITY EXTENSION, MY ENTIRE CAREER WAS IN COLBERT COUNTY, TUSCUMBIA, ALABAMA.  ONE YEAR FARMING WITH MY DADDY, FOLLOWED BY 7 YEARS IN PUBLIC RELATIONS AND PROMOTION OF AG PRODUCTS, BACK TO FARMING FOR ONE YEAR ON MY FARM, THEN BACK TO EXTENSION, 2 ½ YEARS AS COUNTY EXTENSION COORDINATOR WHITE COUNTY FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA.
THEN A PERSONAL TRAGEDY, I LOST MY 1ST BORN SON JOSEPH HEATH POTTER AND ONE OF MY TWO AUBURN UNIVERSITY AGRICULTURE GRADUATES (LANDSCAPE DESIGN “93”) AT THE AGE OF 39.  BACK TO MY FARM AND NOW OVER 5 YEARS OF FORESTRY, WILDLIFE AND CATTLE FARMING.

YES, AGRICULTURE IS STILL MY LIFE, LOVE AND WORK AND I DO HOPE TO SHARE 66 YEARS OF EXPERIENCES, PRACTICAL, PURE, SERIOUS, AG REALITY, EVEN SOME ORIGINAL POETRY AND LOTS OF PURE SOUTHERN STORYIN’!!!
I BELIEVE---“IT IS NOT ABOUT THE WRITIN’, RATHER THE STORY TOLD”.
GROWING UP ON OUR FAMILY FARM, “MY STICK HORSE WAS A BROOM”.
WITHOUT AGRICULTURE THERE IS NO LIFE EXISTANCE!!!  LESS THAN 2 PERCENT OF THE U. S. POPULATION PROVIDES FOR THE OTHER 98 PERCENTS EXISTANCE!!!   PLUS, CLOSE TO 30 PERCENT OF THAT 98 PERCENT HAVE THEIR LIVELIHOOD COME FROM AGRICULTURE.

REMEMBER YOUR HERITAGE!!!
ALWAYS, THINK GOOD MEMORIES!!!
FARM OR CITY, RURAL OR URBAN…
 I AM JUST JOE!!!
