Shankara, a top Ayurvedic skincare line, donates 100 percent of its net profits to doing good around the globe
Shankara is one of the top Ayurvedic skincare brands in the world. The elegant, award-winning products are made in small batches in Texas, with plants and Ayurvedic herbs like gotu kola, turmeric and neem, which nourish the skin and leave it looking healthy and radiant. Affiliated with The Art of Living Center, a wellness retreat and spa in Boone, North Carolina, Shankara is also featured in spa treatments around the globe.
“The idea was not just to create another skincare line,” says Bhushan Deodhar, CEO, Shankara. “We wanted to bring forward the wisdom of Ayurveda with the scientific advancements of the West in one bottle.”
But what makes the brand truly unique is its out-of-the-box business model. The brand donates a full 100 percent of net profits to a range of global initiatives: educating girls and women in developing countries, helping veterans who suffer from PTSD, teaching prisoners how to manage stress, providing disaster and flood relief—for example, from the recent floods in Kerala, India. The goal? Simply to help make the world a better place.
“Many of us were involved with the International Association of Human Values (IAHV),” says Deodhar, “and we thought, ‘How do we create an economic model that benefits society at large?’ Philanthropy was very much the founding principle of the brand.”Shankara provides financial support to Project Welcome Home Troops, where Deodhar teaches meditation to veterans, as well as how to use breath as a way to cleanse trauma. They teach leadership skills and practical tools to help students manage stress through YES Youth Empowerment Seminars, and 75,000 young people have gone through the program. They bring alternative energy to rural households in India without electricity, through the Light A Home Project, and train the local youth on how to install and maintain it. And they support education for girls in 437 schools across India.
Two weeks after we spoke at the International Spa Association Conference (ISPA), Deodhar was headed to London to speak to speak at the Global Mental Health Summit, organized in partnership with IAHV and the British government. “There’s such a prejudice about mental health,” he says. “There are so many techniques from the East and technologies from the West to bring happiness, and build more resiliency to people, to help withstand the difficulties in life. The question we ask is, ‘How can we give people the tools to get through difficult moments?’”
Deodhar worked in the corporate world, at Oracle, for seven years, where, he says, “It’s all about making money. When I became interested in these programs, it changed my life. It brought me inner peace. Life is much more than personal gains,” he continues. “If I can bring this shift to five people, then I will have accomplished something.” shankara.com

Welcome to Clean Beauty Advice, my new bi-weekly column, exclusively for Organic Spa Magazine! I’m so happy you’re here. From interviews to product and spa reviews, I’m here to help you stay informed and educated about the best in clean beauty products and services.
I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday last week. Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the official holiday party season. While we all enjoy a great party, we might not enjoy some of the consequences of over-indulging. Let’s face it sometimes to much food and spirits can take a toll on our true natural beauty. Here are a few clean beauty hacks to help you bounce back after the party.
VITAMINS: A good whole food based supplement is a great addition before bed, if you have had a few to many cocktails. You will find that you wake up more refreshed than if you didn’t take anything at all. Try to also drink 2-3 glasses of water before bed, and a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage.
MegaFood is a great whole food supplement. Made from sustainable fruits and vegetables grown in the United States, it does the body good! No matter how tempting it may be, please do not take any ibuprofen or it’s equivalent after drinking alcohol. This used to be the feel-better-in-the-morning remedy. This combination has been proven to create holes in the liver (not a beautiful thing).
NIGHT TIME HYDRATION: Heavily spiced food and or alcohol can cause dehydration the next day. Let’s face it, a puffy dehydrated face ain’t pretty. A humidifier can you do wonders for the skin, especially this time of year. In addition to its sleeping beauty effects, it’s also great for sinus health. A humidifier helps in the prevention of sinus infections, colds and flus (something that is also common this time of year). When picking a good humidifier make sure you pick one that is room size appropriate. You also want one that is quite.
We like the TaoTronics TT- AH009 Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier. The 360-degree nozzles direct air in different directions. It has a working time of up to 24 hours and it’s super low maintenance. Another great night time hydration beauty hack is an avocado mask. Super simple to make. Just mash up some avocado put it on your face for 15 min, rise and you are done. If you want a bit of a hydration ‘boost’ add a drop or two of coconut oil. The plant based fats in both of these super foods are great for hydration. What ever you don’t use that night, save it for the morning, and do it again.
NEXT DAY HYDRATION: If you wake with puffy eyes, you can try cucumbers or cold tea bags, placed on the eyes. Tea infused ice cubes is a winner for a slightly puffy face (make this in advanced). Use tea bags of your favorite organic tea blend and simply place them in an ice cube tray. Rub the ice all over your face. If you have fair skin, this may not be your go-to as it might make your skin a bit pink.
Some great teas for this are Pukka Relax Tea, and Yogi Skin Detox Tea. Don’t forget to use your avocado mask again, if your skin is still feeling a bit dry. Apply your regular moisturizer after the mask. Since, you already have the avocado spread on your face, be inspired to make a avocado toast for a super hydrating breakfast. Need more hydration? Add a tablespoon of your favorite MCT oil to this. Don’t forget to drink a few glasses of water. Now your after-party-next-day morning hydration is taken care off.
MAKEUP TIPS: Let’s get the blood, flowing to your face before we apply makeup. A great beauty hack for glowing skin is yoga. Even if you don’t have a regular yoga practice, this one pose is perfect for you and your skin (omit if you are feeling nauseous or your stomach is upset). The name of the pose is Uttanasana which simply means forward bend. This pose increases oxygen supply and encourages skin rejuvenation. Now onto the makeup! If you are looking and feeling a bit sluggish after a party or event, my advice to you is to not go overboard with makeup. Use your favorite light concealer where needed. If you have dark or puffy circles under your eyes, stay away from a super dark brow or heavy eye- liners. Go with a bright or bold color on the lips! This will immediately brighten your face.
I wish you the best in holiday cheer! I hope these clean beauty hacks help with looking or feeling your best the day after. Have your own clean beauty hacks? I would love for you to share. Leave a comment or find me on Instagram or Twitter.

Festive looks that let you sparkle this holiday season
From the office party to cookie swaps to ringing in the New Year, there is plenty of partying to be done during the holiday season. To mark the merry occasions, let your makeup get in on the fun.
“The holiday season lets us play with glitter and gleam that’s a bit more festive than our typical day-to-day looks,” says Christy Coleman, chief artistic officer at Beautycounter. “I love an unexpected pop; it helps to brighten the eye and it stands out in photographs.”
Focus on letting one area of your face sparkle and shine. These looks will do the trick.
“We worked hard on our new velvet eyeshadow palette for holiday (in Iconic) to create the richest pigment and boldest sparkle without the questionable ingredients,” Coleman says. “In place of glitter, we used mica, which is safer for your eyes. Use this palette to get the look.”
Step 1: Apply Bangle on the eyelid up to the brow bone.
Step 2: Apply Pendant on the upper and lower lash line.
Step 3: Apply Lace in the corner of each eye.
Step 4: Using your finger, apply one tap of Sequin right in the center of the eye.

“A touch of radiance is always ideal,” says Vinnie Vitolo, west coast regional makeup artist for Vapour Beauty. “As a finishing touch after foundation, apply Vapour Beauty Halo Illuminator 24K as a highlighter. This warm, shimmery gold is the perfect complement to any skin tone and will add instant glam to your look.”
Step 1: Using your fingertips, warm Halo 24K with circular motions to fully cover your fingertips in golden pigments.
Step 2: Apply Halo 24K to illuminate the tops of your cheeks, forehead, bridge of your nose and chin. 24K is also beautiful along the brow line and inside corner of the eye to add a touch of shimmery light.
Step 3: Apply 24K along the collarbone, shoulders and décolleté to accent the skin. It’s especially gorgeous with off-the-shoulder, strapless or cut-out fashion styles. In warmer climates, apply to the shin and tops of the feet to add a feminine glow.

A pucker that pops is a timeless holiday staple.
Step 1: Keep the edges around the lip darker so it holds the depth around the line, using a liner or long-wearing lipstick, such as Kjaer Weis lip liner in Rose, and fill in with Beautycounter Lip Gloss in Magnolia Shimmer.
Step 2: Finish with a sweep of powder highlighter on the cupid’s bow to open the top lip line. Coleman recommends RMS Beauty Living Luminizer.

Top hotels and spas create a sense of place with their own unique, locally inspired skincare lines
When these hotels and spas couldn’t find personal-care products that met their standards, they created their own—including, in some cases, a full range of effective skincare. From a legendary destination spa in Mexico to a villa hotel on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, these spots offer both top-notch pampering and the chance to pick up some very exclusive souvenirs.
For the recent relaunch of its spa, this secluded resort on the northwestern tip of Phuket took inspiration from its lush, seaside setting in an old-growth rainforest thick with bamboo trees and tropical flora.
In addition to treatments based on local healing traditions, the JARA Spa (whose name translates to “Journey”) partnered with Bangkok-based Lemongrass House to create a 100-percent organic line of essential oils (in local scents like lemongrass, ginger and lime), massage oils based on sweet almond and jojoba, and pure virgin coconut oil. (They also stock a deeply moisturizing coconut oil lip balm made for them by villagers on neighboring Raya island.) Guests can relax in their rooms with new natural bath amenities (shower gel, lotion, shampoo and conditioner) that help hydrate sun-worn skin and hair with rich jojoba oil and fragrant frangipani. trisara.com
Copenhagen’s dedication to organic and natural is not limited to its famous food scene. Tucked beneath the historic Hotel D’Angleterre—an elegant Leading Hotels of the World member—the Amazing Space spa recently launched a line of high-tech skincare and wellness products (including supplements) packed with clean, active natural and organic ingredients. Even the packaging is eco-friendly.
Blending Asian and Nordic influences, the line includes standouts like the detoxifying Deep Charcoal Black Facial Scrub; Bio Lightening Kojic Acid Serum (with Japanese rice wine extract to help even out pigment and lighten scars); and the Formula E Healing Face Balm, which repairs skin and protects from future environmental stressors with vitamin E, geranium and primrose butter. The products are used in the spa’s face and body treatments, including Nordic-inspired services that incorporate warm Icelandic lava stones. dangleterre.com
Upon taking the reins of the family business—a luxury hotel perched high in the town of Ravello, overlooking Italy’s Amalfi Coast—sisters Mariella and Attilia Avino set about making updates to the historic property, including the creation of a high-quality “cosmetic food” line for their garden-set spa. The line of facial products, body oils, scrubs and masks harnesses the power of three ingredients from the surrounding Campagna region (each extracted without heat or additives).
The Lemon line uses the famous citrus from Sorrento to balance, brighten and improve elasticity; the Apricot line draws upon mineral-rich fruit from the volcanic Vesuvius area to soothe and hydrate; and the Apple line uses the ancient, Annurca varietal, loaded with antioxidants to help refine and moisturize. The products are featured in the spa’s targeted facials and body treatments, and available for purchase. palazzoavino.com
Rancho La Puerta
Launched this spring from the legendary destination spa, La Puerta Core Essentials skin and body care line is a “bounty-to-beauty” range inspired by the stunning gardens, mountains and six-acre organic farm that surround the retreat—so that guests can “embrace the essence of The Ranch experience at home,” explains CEO and General Manager Roberto Arjona.
Made from sustainably harvested, wild-crafted and eco-certified ingredients, using a mix of plant-based medicine with aromatherapy formulations, the range includes 37 skincare products, with standouts like Calendula Moisturizing Crème, Nourishing Facial Oil (with jojoba and essential oils of neroli, rose and carrot seed), and an Intensive Eye and Lip Serum with ghee, basil, licorice and Ayurvedic herbs. A Pomegranate Enzyme Mask, Lavender Sage Body Wash, herb- or organic cocoa-infused Body Oils, and a Sun Restore collection (with an aloe vera and lavender Recovery Gel) round out the goodness. rancholapuerta.com
Sunrise Springs/Ojo Caliente
New Mexico, U.S.
When Jen Scott, co-owner and steward of these two legendary hot spring resorts in Northern New Mexico, couldn’t find effective skincare products that “honored the beauty and resilience” of the surrounding landscape, she created her own. After over a year of product development and testing, Scott launched Round Barn Apothecary (roundbarnapothecary.com), a uniquely beautiful and sustainable line of skincare crafted in small batches, featuring healing plant-based ingredients foraged and wild-harvested across the Southwest.
You’ll be transported to those breathtaking desert landscapes with products like the Luminous Cleanse, made with prickly pear juice and the Brightening Moisturizer, with aloe vera and lemon peel. The products—made with organic ingredients—were so popular that Round Barn Apothecary has become a stand-alone line now available at spas, hotels and shops across the country, as well as at the two properties that helped inspire it. sunrisesprings.ojospa.com
White Key Villas
Athens-based White Key Villas prides itself on creating services and experiences that are both luxurious and unique for the guests who book their island vacation villas—right down to the bath and body products used in the homes. “We got tired of having to put name brand products in the rooms that might be from high-end lines, but weren’t that special—and that didn’t have a sense of place,” says Elena Fotiadi, marketing director. So they embarked on a “preposterous plan” to craft their own. Relaunched with new packaging this summer, the products were developed to fit the needs of guests enjoying a beach holiday; the hair products, for example, help balance the effects of seawater.
The formulations feature Greek ingredients like lime, honey, cherry and wild thyme, with only a light lingering scent—so as not to interfere with the fresh, natural fragrance of the sun and sea. whitekeyvillas.com
Four Seasons Hotel Florence
Italian brand Arangara Cosmetics takes sustainability seriously: Not only are all the farm-grown ingredients 100-percent organic and traceable, but the company proudly states that it can even tell you what day each element was harvested. The products all draw on Italian regional bounty (think olives, oranges and honey)—but when the brand saw the vast historic gardens surrounding Four Seasons Florence hotel, it felt inspired to create a separate line that pays homage to the flowers and herbs found on the grounds. Exclusive to the hotel’s garden-view spa, and used in signature facials and body treatments, the Il Giardino products include a purifying facial cleanser, brightening mask, and moisturizer featuring extracts of melissa, bergamot, rose, honeysuckle and more. fourseasons.com
Known as the “Holy Mountain,” northeastern Greece’s Mount Athos is considered one of the most sacred places in Christianity and has since the 11th century been the domain of monks, spiritualists and pilgrims. The wild and remote spot is also forbidden to women—though one has managed to earn the monks’ trust enough to bring some of the mountain’s “natural magic” to the rest of us.
Based in Athens, aesthetician Dimitra Goula is more than just an in-demand celebrity facialist—she’s a modern-day alchemist who is passionately committed to crafting products made from the purest organic ingredients, sourced only from areas with limited atmospheric pollution. To create her eponymous skincare line, she spent years researching the efficacy of an array of natural elements, eventually settling on potent goodies like wild olive, black charcoal, blue chamomile, royal jelly, mastic resin (native to the island of Chios), beeswax from a chestnut tree forest, and—for her signature The Secret blend—a mix of rare and ancient herbs hand-harvested by the monks of Mount Athos.
All the made-to-order products must be kept refrigerated, per her strict belief that “anything that doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge must contain some form of chemicals.” (This also ensures the products stay fresh for their three-to-six-month shelf life.)
At her understated Athens studio, Goula and her team use the range (as well as techniques like facial cupping and targeted massage) to perform facials that lead to instantly visible results in tone and texture, and long-lasting benefits to the skin. But if you can’t join the line of Greek celebrities and international jet-setters who go to Goula for their glow, there’s hope: Her range, including favorites like the natural sunscreen and transformative night cream, will soon be available for international shipping—on dry ice, of course. dimitragoula.gr
Founded by aesthetician Sara Damelio, Skincando is a line of organic beauty products created to solve skin problems: bug bites, sunburn and extremely dry skin. It was shipped to the U.S. military in Afghanistan, especially the Combat-Ready Bug Repellent, a natural botanical bug spray used by U.S. troops to repel sand fleas and mosquitoes, and Combat-Ready Balm. (Operation Sand Flea is a nonprofit wing of Skincando that donates a portion of the Combat-Ready products to members of the U.S. military.)
The Skincando Combat-Ready Balm is the ultimate all-purpose balm, to soothe dryness, post-shaving burn, chafing, jock itch, bug bites, sunburn, windburn, and anything else that soldiers—or civilians—may require. pritinyc.com
Welcome to Clean Beauty Advice, my new bi-weekly column, exclusively for Organic Spa Magazine! In each column, we’ll explore tips, tricks and products from the clean beauty world.
Halloween is fun for all ages. Once a year, you get to take on a new identity. You can go for simple and sweet to glamorous and outrageous. Whatever you choose, makeup and hair is the easiest way to transform yourself. Here are some ideas to help you navigate clean products for your transformation this Halloween.
Try using a natural skin care mask as a Halloween mask. You can even add a tiny bit of natural eyelash adhesive to help it stick. If you want to get really creative, try layering on some loose mineral eye colors by Bare Minerals. Try: Knours.
Hair Hair Now
Nothing is as instantly transformative as a new hair style. This Halloween, try changing it up with a different color or different length wig. You can also go bold by adding a temporary burst of color. In the image to the right, clean beauty hair stylist Michelle Cameau placed a dark wig on top of models blonde hair. Allowing some of the blonde to show, she sprayed hair with temporary vegan colored hair spray in purple haze by Manic Panic.
Bold and Beautiful
For a bold and beautiful look, take inspiration from icons such as Princess Leia from Star Wars. In the image below, Michele used clean hair products by Matrix Biolage to create the messy pigtail updos.
The makeup was created by yours truly. The model's skin was first prepared by using Thayers Witch Hazel in Cucumber. Next I applied Stratus Soft Focus by Vapour Organic Beauty. After I applied a Dual Powder Foundation by ZuZu Luxe, and a cream concealer by Gabriel Cosmetics. I filled in brows with the Jane Iredale Retractable Eye Pencil in Golden Brown. The eyes are a smoky light blue created using loose mineral eye shadows by No Miss in Tampa Teal, Boca Ice White, and Paxton Purple. If you find your minerals are not sticking the way you like, trying mixing them with a little concealer first. I finished the look with black liquid eyeliner and mascara in ZuZu Luxe, Gabriel blush in Magical and Vapour Elixir Lipgloss in Delite.
Smoky Clean Witch
This look was created with the Purple Rain eyeshadow palette by Jane Iredale, and intensified by adding eyeshadow in matte black, with black eyeliner and mascara by ZuZu Luxe. Cheeks and lips are Aura Multi Use Classic by Vapour Organic Beauty with a bit of clear gloss in center.
There you have it! Some fun, creative ways to go clean with your beauty looks this Halloween. Please share with the hashtags #ospacleanhalloween #cleanbeautyadvice. Special thanks to the model Olivia Salisbury and clean hair stylist Michelle Cameau.
