“I just don’t like doctors…” If I had a nickel for every time I heard that statement from one of my sisters or brothers, I’d be sitting on a small fortune right now. As a nurse, I see too many of us who are getting sicker younger – and some are even dying – due to inequities in our healthcare system. A 2016 report from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-profit organization focusing on national health issues, states: “Blacks and American Indians and Alaska Natives fare worse than Whites on the majority of examined measures of health status and health outcomes.” Racial and ethnic disparities in health care are widely known, and various initiatives are in place to address them. While some progress has been made, people of color still face significant challenges in this area. Why the disparity? First, let’s define disparity: “inequality or difference in some respect.” Many minorities are very aware of the disparities they face in all areas of their lives and healthcare is no different, however, the reasons for the inconsistency are not clearly defined. Some feel that minorities and those in a lower socioeconomic class have a different set of priorities than […]

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), infants who are breastfed are less at risk for asthma, eczema, type 2 diabetes, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and more. Moms who breastfeed return to their pre-pregnancy weight more quickly, and show a decreased risk for breast and ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Breastfeeding recommended for 12 months The evidence that breastfeeding provides the optimal nutrition for babies is strong enough that major health organizations encourage breastfeeding for most infants. The American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, with breastfeeding continuing for at least 12 months and as long as desired thereafter. The CDC supports this recommendation. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding up to two years or more. Racial disparities in breastfeeding rates In 2017, the CDC reviewed National Immunization Data from 2011-2015. According to the data, breastfeeding was initiated with 64% of Black infants, versus 81% of white infants and 82% of Hispanic infants. This difference of 17 percentage points translates to 85,000 Black children per 500,000 births (320,000 (64%) vs 405,000 (81%)) who won’t receive the benefits of breastfeeding. Why the disparity? It’s complicated Some contributing factors to lower […]

I often use bentonite clay to deep clean my hair. I love how soft and defined it leaves my hair. I usually mix own my clay mask, but I have been on the lookout for a ready-made mix that will allow me to skip the DIY step on wash days when I need to. I was recently gifted a bottle of Detoxifying Clay Wash, one of the products that make up the Natural VIP line from Nature’s Beauty Mix. I was excited to try it. About Nature’s Beauty Mix Janeen Arshan, founder of Nature’s Beauty Mix and developer of the Natural VIP line of products, decided to start her company after experimenting with DIY products for her own use. She began to use plant oils and butters in place of store-bought products containing synthetic ingredients and found that her hair and skin flourished. The Natural VIP line is free of silicones, parabens, and sulfates. The products are cruelty-free and non-GMO. So, what’s in the Detoxifying Clay Wash? This wash includes natural, nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera and olive oil. It also contains lavender and rosemary essential oils, known for soothing the skin and promoting growth. Here’s the full ingredients list: […]

One of the best things about natural hair is how easy it can be to create intricate looking updos with a few braids or twists and a handful of bobby pins. Check out these tutorials for quick natural hair updos that will have you out the door fast without sacrificing style. 1) Two Cornrows + Pompadour Updo This style includes two cornrows and a few chunky twists to create a beautiful quick updo style. If you can’t cornrow, flat twists will work as well. 2) Faux Flat Twists with Side Bun Updo I love this style because it has the look of flat twists without the flat twisting skills! Jumbo twists are chained together to create this style. 3) Sideswept Curly Updo This updo is as quick and easy as it gets. Simply sweep your hair up and to the side and use bobby pins to hold it in place. This video shows the style on a rod set, but it would look just as good on an old braid out, twist out, or wash and go. 4) Roll and Tuck Updo If you can’t flat twist, twist, braid, or cornrow (or you just want to try something new) this […]
