The Cleanser Everyone and Their Mothers are OBSESSED with - M Review 83

Whenever I get asked about ways to keep someone’s skin healthy I ask back two questions: “Do you wear sunscreen?” and “How’s your cleansing routine like?”. Those two steps right there can totally change the way you do skincare, and believe me, results will be seen as soon as you find the right answers for you.

Thing is, with cleansers majority of the people tend to think the stronger the better. There’s this myth going around that as long as your face feels like a mummy right after you cleanse then it’s working. Oh my, I feel like crying everytime I hear that. The common belief is that, if you’re on the oily/acne prone skin side you should try to get rid of all sebum and oils on your skin and that will get rid of all your skin problems. WRONG! Stripping our skin away from its natural oils will only cause the opposite effect: for our skin to generate even more oil in order to balance out the lack of it, AKA, we’re making the problem worst.

For the same reason I always try to guide people to try moisturizing cleansers, those with the right pH (between 4.5 and 5.5), foamy but not bubbly and of course with ingredients that will help your skin stay hydrated all day long! A couple of months ago I saw everyone on Instagram raving over these new cleansers and got so curious, basically because I didn’t read a single bad review, so I had to put my hands on it and my skin to the test.

I’m talking about HuangJiSoo, the brand that seems to be taking over skincare routines by storm! As my skin tends to get dehydrated I went on and tried the Pure Daily Foaming Cleanser on its moisturizing version, and Oh, boy… now I understand why it’s so popular.

First things first, this cleanser is formulated 99.5% with pure botanical ingredients, which, believe it or not, it’s a HUGE accomplishment in the beauty industry. As it is vegan, cruelty free, dermatologically tested and carries an EWG Verification, this cleanser is safe to use even for those with super sensitive skin. Containing ingredients such as mulberry extract, wheat seed extract, chamomile, and grape seed, this formula helps protect the skin’s natural moisture barrier while soothing, hydrating and nourishing our complexion, AKA, a real life savior for those who - like me - tend to get dehydrated skin very easily. But that’s not it! This super gentle foam cleanser also features oatmeal, which maintains oil and moisture balance on our skin.

I personally feel like this is the perfect cleanser for those looking for a everyday option that’s not gonna affect their hydration levels or mess with combination/sensitive skin. While it really works for everyone, those who suffer from dry patches, redness, acne prone or sensitive skin can make amazing use of this formula, as it will prepare your skin to receive and absorb all the rest of your skincare routine.

In terms of it being a morning or nighttime cleanser, I rather using it during nighttime after my oil cleanser, as it leaves my skin plump and ready for a good night's sleep.

NEOGEN Real Flower Calendula Cleansing Water

The NEOGEN Real Flower Calendula Cleansing Water is a great addition to my skincare routine. After cleansing and removing my makeup for the day, I like to swipe my face with a cotton saturated with cleansing water to get rid of any makeup residue leftover. And let me tell you… this took off what I could not see after I cleansed. I’ll be honest; it was not a pretty sight, what I saw on the cotton. But my skin felt extra clean after I toned with this cleansing water.

The aesthetics of this product is just so eye-catching. The real calendula petals in this offers a rich combination of nourishing extracts that soothes your skin while removing any makeup residue or dirt that was left behind. Other beneficial ingredients formulated in here are centella asiatica extract, arnica Montana flower extract and Cucumber extract (so great for soothing!). Unsurprisingly, this gives off a lovely floral scent that is not too overpowering.

This is a whopping 300 ml product that will last you a good while. I use this twice a day and have barely made a dent in it so it is definitely worth it. I think combo to oily skin friends will benefit the most from this because it is not a heavy product yet gives a bit of hydration and does not try tacky. My keratosis pilaris affected areas on my face especially love this product because it calms the redness and reduces irritation. I highly recommend this and give it a two thumbs up!!

Jayjun Honey Dew Green - M Review 81

If you know me, you know I stan Jayjun. I never tried the Honey Dew Green Mask before. The ingredient niacinamide is high up on the list so I’m expecting some good brightening. It also contains manuka honey and propolis as well as some “green stuff” like green tea, kiwi, avocado and spinach. Even the sheet material is green...and so soft.I can smell some alcohol in it, but it is not that bad. I mostly smell honey and fruit.

The serum has a nice slip to it and the mask itself is very juicy. The mask is also very roomy, almost fits my whole face (good if you have a wide man face lol) I left this mask on for 10 minutes before heading to the gym (yeah I’m that extra) to see how this mask works.

After taking it off, it was very glossy, not sticky, super smooooth! There was a thin film left behind but that doesn’t bother me too much. Overall, my complexion is definitely looking brighter.

Right off the top, i know this is gonna be olesensory,.,cause it says FRAGRANCE. It has niacinamide as the fourth ingredient, and it has some plant stem cell extract and evening primrose. Oh yeah this smells like a garden. Look how big it is. If you have a wide man face....Jayjun I lvoe you. It smells like walking into a spa. The sheet material is amazing. I’m looking for skin luminoisity, and hydration. Kinda shook at how soft and plush and smooth and BIG the Purple Fragrance Mask is. Smell isnt overpowering...smells like walking into a spa or a garden. It has a very mild brightening effect. I like a lot of their other masks but my skin is looking ultra healthy now.

Ingredient Spotlight: Hyaluronic Acid for Water-full Skin - M Tips 80

Can you guess what one of the most popular and common skincare ingredients is? If you guessed Hyaluronic Acid, you’re right on the mark! Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is one of the most popular moisturizing ingredients in skincare today. You may often find this ingredient labeled as “sodium hyaluronate”. This ingredient might sound “boring” but it is has a bunch of benefits that everyone’s skin will love! This M Blog will be an “Ingredient Spotlight” with hyaluronic acid taking center stage.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Did you know that HA is actually a naturally occuring substance in the human body? So, everyone has this ingredient being produced in the body. It is considered a glycosaminoglycan (try pronouncing that at one go) that plays an important part in supporting cell structure - most often found in our eyes, joints, and connective tissue.

Despite having the word “acid” in its name, this ingredient is not an chemical exfoliant like AHA, BHA, or PHA. It’s safe to use for ALL skin types - we all naturally produce it anyways! .

Skin-cab Lesson:

Humectant: a substance used to retain or preserve moisture

What will HA do for my skin?

As mentioned in the diagram above, hyaluronic acid’s main function is to retain moisture in the skin for a hydrated complexion. Even though it’s a naturally occuring substance in our bodies, we tend to produce less of it as our bodies age. Our skin becomes drier, loses moisture retention, and isn’t as elastic or firm. The last thing we want is our skin to look dehydrated and aging.

Hyaluronic acid is able to boost up the hydration for a more supple complexion. Your skin will appear more plump while diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Imagine the hyaluronic acid filling in those lines with capsules of water - water-full skin"! Using HA in your skincare routine will give you both hydrating and anti-aging benefits for a healthy and younger complexion.

Product Recommendations:

[COSRX] Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Power Essence
  • COSRX fanatics unite! I loved using this HA essence, especially during the winter where my oily-combo skin leaned more dry and dehydrated. I’ve always trusted COSRX to cater to my sensitive skin, and this product is no different. It’s such a nice layering product for that extra boost of hydration. My skin looked like it had a nice drink of water. Sometimes I would even put this under a matte foundation to bring out a subtle dew from within. For my dry skin girls, this would be an additional layer of moisture to combat any form of dryness.

[JM Solution] Water Luminous S.O.S Ringer Mask
  • You know it’s good when you buy a whole box of masks. I appreciate a lot of the JM Solution masks, but if you want a HA kick, this is the one to use. This mask actually contains 5 types of hyaluronic acid to maximize moisture from deep within the skin. My skin felt super plumped and hydrated as if it drank a whole gallon of water. I may stray away from this as the hot and humid summer arrives, but until then I will most definitely be finishing the box of these guys!

[Neogen] Black Volume Cream
  • This cream is definitely an underrated Neogen product If you’re looking for the anti-aging benefits of HA then look no further. Just like the name says, this cream volumizes the skin with moisture.  There are 119 natural ingredients that work together to hydrate, brighten, and plump the skin - HA being one of them. With HA being an active ingredient (the first five main ingredients), this cream gives instantly hydrates the skin with a pleasant gel formula that glides over the skin. A little goes a long way! But if you wanted to use this as a sleeping mask, you definitely could layer this cream on - you’ll love the results the next morning!

Innisfree Olive Real Serum - M Review 79

I'm always on the lookout for products that are super moisturizing while incorporating natural ingredients, and the Innisfree Olive line seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I loved the Innisfree Olive Real Essential Oil, so the Innisfree Olive Real Serum seemed like the logical next product to try.

I love products with olive oil, but I recognize that not everyone may feel the same way. Olive oil products generally have a slightly thicker (but not necessarily more oily feeling) texture, which is amazing for dry or dehydrated skin. The Innisfree Olive Real Serum is no exception, with a delightfully creamy and rich texture. In fact, for a serum, it is quite thick, almost a light lotion or emulsion consistency. I found that I really couldn't layer too many products on top of the Innisfree Olive Serum, so I generally used it after all my toners and serums, and just before my night cream.

I love the inclusion of organic olive oil from Crete. Olive oil has natural polyphenols and antioxidants that can protect your skin from oxidative stress (a.k.a. aging) in addition to moisturizing and softening the skin. It also contains squalane and mango and shea butters. As you can imagine, this makes for a very rich and nourishing serum! If you have oily skin, you may want to skip this one, as it does form a moisturizing, protective film on your skin and may be too much for your skin. I found that it left a slightly tacky finish, but this went away as soon as I applied my cream on top. The light, citrusy fragrance was pleasant and not overpowering.

The richness of the Innisfree Olive Serum showed itself in an extra glow and softness when I washed my face the next day. I could tell that it really prevented my skin from becoming dehydrated overnight. Overall, I would highly recommend this for dry and dehydrated skin, but probably not for oily skin. Combination skin types might enjoy this if they lean towards getting dehydrated, but might find it too heavy on the T-zone. I personally have combination skin and I enjoyed it very much, using it mostly at night and not during the day.

Thank you Masksheets for generously providing this product to try!

coxir Ultra Hyaluronic Cleansing Oil - M Review 78

I’m on a HA kick because the cold weather in the bay area isn’t letting up. Coxir focuses on simple and minimal products that are affordable and targeted at sensitive skin. This cleansing oil hydrates and soothes with HA (Hyaluronic Acid) and aloe extracts while gently removing makeup and impurities.

Ingredients:

Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Canola Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, PEG-8 Isostearate, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Fruit Water, Malpighia Emarginata (Acerola) Fruit Extract, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract, Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Morus Alba Fruit Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract, Prunus Avium (Sweet Cherry) Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Leontopodium alpinum extract, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum

150ml of product came in a plastic pump bottle, my preferred form of packaging for most skincare products. It’s nearly scentless and is highly spreadable. I use 2 pumps every evening to remove sunscreen and non-waterproof makeup. It’s not the best at removing waterproof stuff like Heroinemake Mascara, then again, this is one of the toughest mascaras to remove. Add a little water to let it emulsify and it will continue to remove the stubborn remainders. Waterproof liquid liner comes off completely during this step. My skin feels clean yet soft. At $17 a pop, this is super affordable and I foresee this bottle lasting at least 4 months with daily use.

Hello Spring! K-Beauty Spring Skincare Guide - M Review 77

We’re reaching that time of the year when we can slowly start to say goodbye to the cold winter. Finally! As we come out of hibernation, our skin appears to be dull and lifeless with the lack of sun we have been getting. During the spring, I like brightening up my complexion for a vibrant and lively appearance. Personally, I like transitioning from heavy creams and intensive hydration to products that are light enough to layer. I’ll be going over some key ingredients and products that I have been using to bring back that spring-time glow!

[Neogen] Dermalogy Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Lemon

Another favorite in the K-Beauty community. This innovative pad by Neogen is one of my favorites in terms of exfoliating and toning my skin. There are two other version which are awesome as well. The dual-sided pads are great for exfoliating dead skin cells that build up as texture on your face - not cute. I only use this 1-2 times a week since I want to avoid over-exfoliating my skin. If you want smoother, brighter skin I highly recommend trying these pads!

The Lemon Bio-Peel Gauze is infused with a high concentration of lemon fruit, orange, and grapefruit extract - a powerhouse of Vitamin C - to make your skin complexion radiant and bright. These exfoliating pads are the solution to transition from your rough, dull winter skin to smooth, glowing spring skin.

[COSRX] Galactomyces 95 Tone Balancing Essence

COSRX has a loyal cult following and for good reason. The products they offer are simple yet effective, with a focus on key ingredients. I’ve loved all of their essences, but for the spring, I’ve been loving this Galactomyes Essence to help brighten up my skin as well as add a boost of hydration to my regimen. I’ve noticed over time that my skin looks more radiant and almost transparent after using this.

The galactomyces in this essence a fermented ingredient that has antioxidants and is effective in moisturizing, brightening, reducing acne and oil production, and increasing elasticity. There is also niacinamide and allantoin that both boost the toning effects from this essence.

[Klairs] Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop

If you haven’t tried a Vitamin C serum, go out and get yourself one now! This one from Klairs has been raved about and for good reason. If you haven’t already figured out what Vitamin C is good for, this serum works to relieve hyperpigmentation and dark spots that may be caused by the sun. I apply this right before my moisturizer, or sometimes I even mix it in with my foundation for a glowy finish. This serum feels more like a dry-oil, so it soaks into the after a couple of pats. This guy has literally transformed my skin tone and complexion. I look more alive and energized.

This product contains 5% ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) which is a perfect amount for those with sensitive skin. Higher concentrations of vitamin C may irritate the skin. It also contains other vitamin C-enriched ingredients as well as my favorite anti-inflammatory/redness-relieving ingredient, centella asiatica.

[Skin&Lab] Red Cream

I remember reviewing this cream not too long ago, and now it’s back in this blog. It is fitting of the season with its rose and floral extracts that work to brighten and plump the skin. This is literally the perfect moisturizer for Spring-ready skin. I love that the cream isn’t too heavy with its gel-cream formulation, suitable for almost every skin type. The scent is not overbearingly fake as well - very fresh and floral.

On top of the rose and floral extracts, this cream also contains pomegranate and various berry extracts to provide an antioxidant rich effect. These extracts provide deep hydration and anti-aging benefits as well. With the cream almost empty now, I can say that this cream has revitalized my skin with a beautiful glow and youthful plump.

[Suntique] I’m Pure Cica Suncream

Transitioning from winter, we are now getting more sun than before. Yay! But that means more harmful UV exposure that can cause skin damage. So, it’s even more important to layer on sunscreen before heading out the house.

I’ve been trying this new one out from Suntique, and this one contains centella asiatica and madecassoside (my fav ingredients) to help soothe and calm the skin. Sensitive skin types, like myself, would love this sunscreen as it doesn’t clog pores or feel overbearing on the skin.

Mask Recommendations:

[A by Bom] Ultra Floral Leaf Mask  [Jayjun] Rose Blossom Mask [Papa Recipe] Bombee Rose Gold Honey Mask Pack

Hopefully, this blog has given you some recommendations for your spring skincare routine. Instead of completely overhauling the products you are currently using, try incorporating maybe one or two of the products I have mentioned in your routine. You'll be glowing for the gods and looking spring-ready!

Until the next one,

Missha Time Revolution Ampoule - M Review 76

Let’s talk about packaging before we dive into the ingredients and the claims to this serum. How beautiful and eye catching is it? It makes for a wonderful shelfie photo, doesn’t it? The glass bottle itself feels very sturdy and the dropper is my favorite way to dispense any type of serum. The bottle contains a generous 50 mL of product so there’s plenty for your skin to appreciate.

Let’s dive into the ingredients list; so many great botanical, brightening, firming and hydrating goodies packed into this serum. Some key ingredients are Bifida Ferment (to help your skin’ vitality), Lactobacillus Ferment (to help clear up problematic skin that is scarred or textured) and Lactococcus Ferment (which is excellent for moisturizing and soothes your skin). In addition, we have Vitamin C, which I love for brightening and clarifying my skin, giving it a nice boost of radiance.

This serum claims go hand in hand with the ingredients; to provide vitality, replenish your skin, and to boost its radiance. I’ve been using this for a month and it’s easily become a holy grail product for me. The serum gives off a hint of ginseng aroma; it has a lovely and subtle herbal scent to it which I find quite nice. There is a nice slip to the serum while you’re applying it on and absorbance time is quick but it leaves a glowy and comfortable satin finish. You can use it night or day (I use it twice a day). I love how this has made my skin feel ; instantly nourished and although I can’t attest to the wrinkles/anti aging claims, I can undoubtedly say that this serum has a permanent spot in my skincare routine.

After

Shine your way into Spring: JAYJUN Intensive Shining Set - M Review 75

It’s back. That weird time of the year when the weather starts acting weird. Spring is around the corner but somehow it’s snowing everyday, then we’ll get a week of “springy” temperatures to then go back to the cold and so on until June. Welcome to transitional weather season, my friends. This unstable time of the year is hard not only on our fashion choices - should I wear a jacket or not? - but also on our skin.

During this period of time, most people claim their skin starts acting up: more breakouts, dryness, tightness and specially a dull complexion. This is mainly because our skin is confused. While our skin is super smart and knows how to transition in order to meet our necessities, weather changes can be very stressful and develop into reactions we’re not used to. For that same reason we need to help our skin throughout this process in order for it to be capable to maintain itself healthy all through Summer.

During this time I like to add some specific ingredients to my routine in order to keep it hydrated, bright and overall balanced, such as niacinamide, flowers extracts, some nourishing oils and lots or hydrating factors. For that same reason is that I’m obsessed with Jayjun’s Intensive Shining collection. Not only its package is basically me in form of a box, but the formulas are so soothing and hydrating I’m already thinking about the next things I wanna try. So far I’ve tested only the toner and the emulsion but if the rest of the collection is as good as this, boy, oh boy, I’m ready.

Jayjun Intensive Shining Toner

I’m obsessed with toners, let’s starts there. You could even say they’re my favorite step from my skincare routine. You know that feeling when you just washed your face, then apply your toner and your skin looks and feels plump and revived? Yep, that’s the feeling I love. Not all toners accomplish that though, but this one definitely does.

Containing 77% cherry blossom extract - which is highly anti-inflammatory and packed with vitamins to brighten up the skin - this toner adds vitality to your complexion. Everytime I use it I can see and feel my skin softer and more elastic, kind of like a baby’s cheek.

A little tip? I love placing toner-soaked cotton pads over my skin for 10-15 minutes to calm it down whenever it feels too tired or dehydrated, but not all toners are great for it. This one is so light and gentle, it’s perfect for a long toning session.

Jayjun Intensive Shining Emulsion

I’m not much of an emulsion gal, gotta admit. I tend to go straight to moisturizers and will probably keep on doing so, but this emulsion definitely impressed me. While I still think it’s not enough for winter time, it’s great to be layered under a moisturizer for an extra shot of hydration, plus I feel like it helps create kind of like a shield against cold temperatures, so my skin doesn't dry out throughout the day.

It contains a little less cherry blossom concentration than the toner - 59%, which is still a lot - combined with Niacinamide, Shea Butter and Brightening-9 complex, which is packed with extracts from 9 different flowers to deeply moisturize and revitalize skin.

I personally feel like this could be a great catch for those with oily skin during summer time, as it keeps skin fresh and hydrated without feeling heavy.
