Gruppo Gamma is a Singapore based microbrand which specializes producing high quality cushion case watches. This relatively young brand (established in 2013) attracted my attention a few times already. Most notably with their Peacemaker model which I’m going to review at some point on Lug2Lug. However, today we are not talking about the Peacemaker but rather their latest model in the making – Vanguard. The Vanguard is not your usual PAM copycat. It has a lot of its own character, which is present in a dedicated crown guard, case protector on the side of the watch, two-tone dial, and a custom caseback portraying company’s logo of a skull with a rose.

Gruppo Gamma Vanguard Mk IV is the company’s reincarnation of their most famous model – Vanguard. It’s a cushion case diver watch with 200m water resistance. There will be three models available with different case finishes: Vanguard AG-16 – stainless steel case,  Vanguard AV-16 – aged steel, and Vanguard AN-17 with a case made of bronze. All three models sport a substantial 44 mm diamater case with 54 mm lug-to-lug. The height of the watch measures 13.5 mm with included double domed sapphire crystal. As you could assume, the lug width is 24 mm, which makes it a perfect size for a Panerai – style watch. But don’t let that fool you. The Vanguard is not your usual PAM copycat. It has a lot of its own character, which is present in a dedicated crown guard, case protector on the side of the watch, two-tone dial, and a custom caseback portraying company’s logo of a skull with a rose.

Gruppo Gamma Vanguar Mark IV

As I mentioned, Gruppo Gamma has lots of character, which is most visible on the dial. It’s a two-tone dial with a blue outer ring and a black inner dial. The markers are generously printed with Swiss SuperLumiNova® C3 so you can be sure this thing is going to be a lume monster. The handset is a traditional pencil-style handset with prominent red seconds hand.

Gruppo Gamma Vanguar Mark IV caseback

Gruppo Gamma usually use Japanese-made movements for their watches but this time the company decided to opt for a Swiss-made ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. It’s a classic workhorse movement with 28800 beats per hour and 38 hours power reserve.

I think that it’s worth mentioning that Gruppo Gamma decided to use a premium leather strap for their Vanguard collection. For the first time the company will equip every watch with a handmade in Italy leather strap by Simona Di Stefano Straps.

Gruppo Gamma Vanguar Mark IV

The Vanguard collection is currently available in pre-order and, according to Gruppo Gamma, watches should  be ready for shipment somewhere around September/October 2018. The pre-order option offers a hefty discount:

– Stainless steel AG-16: $679 USD instead of $850 USD

– Aged steel AV-16: $719 USD instead of $900 USD

– Bronze AN-17: $759 USD instead of $950 USD

If you decide to preorder any of the Vanguard models, you are going to be asked to place $100 USD deposit. More details can be found on Gruppo Gamma’s website.

Hamilton have just released a new limited edition model of extremely popular watch in their portfolio: Khaki Aviation X-Wind. This limited edition model was released as a celebration of 100th anniversary of Hamilton’s aviation know-how.

I’m pretty sure more of us already know the regular version of Hamilton X-Wind. It’s a marvelous piece of aviation technology which allows to manually calculate cross-wind and drift angle for the pilots. The limited edition is no different here but it comes with a couple of subtle changes, which only add to the charm of the watch. The first noticeable change is addition of vintage lume on both hands and indices. I’m sure not everyone is fan of this long lasting vintage fad but I really think it doesn’t look out of place in this example.

The other change that I really dig is the new shape of screw-down crowns. It’s not a huge change by any means, rather a very subtle one and not that noticeable at the first glance. The crowns have a more cone-like shape, which gives the whole watch a more refined and mature look.

Hamilton X-Wind Limited Edition H77796535

The last but not least, the limited edition X-Wind by Hamilton is equipped with the same automatic chronograph H-21 movement that was used in the original X-Wind. However, there are some changes there as well. This is the first Hamilton chronograph watch which utilizes a silicon hairspring, and on top of that each watch is COSC certified as a chronometer.

The latest limited edition X-Wind H77796535 is a really nice touch to the portfolio of Hamilton’s aviation family. I really love the new subtle color scheme, which is  well balanced between vintage look and a modern robust piece of equipment. The addition of new crowns and COSC certified movement is huge winner as well. It’s worth noting that this model is limited to 1918 pieces and it’s priced at 2 250 Euro or 2 595 USD. You will find more details on the official website.
