For the past few years, I have chosen “one little word” to guide me through the year, and for the most part, it’s been great. (But in full disclosure, last year I forgot my word! OOPS!) This year, I considered using an idea from my administrator, Jennifer Hogan, to choose three words to guide me; however, the more I tried to come up with three words, the more I kept coming back to just one. Dedicate. I have Adriene Mishler of Yoga with Adriene to thank for this word choice. Each year she creates a 30 day yoga series, and this year it is called dedicate. The more I thought about this word, the more I realized it was perfect for me and what I want to do this year. Let me start by sharing the definition and synonyms. I feel like 2018 was the year of “me”. I’m not complaining; I think it was much needed. But let’s just say that I didn’t devote much time/effort/money/etc. to anyone but me. I haven’t been writing much this school year, but I have been reading a lot! When I (re)started this blog in the summer of 2017, I started a Friday feature, but I couldn’t keep up with it. I’m going to attempt to get that going again: Friday Favorite Finds. In these (semi weekly) posts, I will share my favorite reads from the web.  As an instructional coach, I’ve been combing the internet to collect resources, sites, and articles about instructional strategies so I have a lot on hand to share with teachers as the need arises.  Here are a few of my current favorites! 28 Student-Centered Instructional Strategies from TeachThought–I love this handy little chart. One year at Thanksgiving, when I was around 7 years old, I took the thanks part of Thanksgiving very seriously. I encouraged my older siblings and parents to express their gratitude around the dinner table. I took the opportunity to thank anyone and everyone involved in the creation of the feast before us–including the farmers who grew the vegetables and the rain that fell from the sky to water it. Meanwhile, our food grew cold my family grew impatient. Thinking of that story today, I got to wondering how often we actually stop to take stock of all the things we could be grateful for? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think we need to thank the bees that fertilized the flower to grow the squash on the table, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to stop and express our gratitude a little more often. Part I: Tap into Technology One of the biggest (among many) challenges for me in this new role has been creating an organization system. When in the classroom, I knew what I needed, where it needed to be, and how to set it up, but as a coach, I’m often on the go and I don’t yet really know what I might need. So, needless to say, it’s been quite a process trying to get organized. If you’re new here, you may not know that this is my first year as a full-time instructional coach. While I learned a lot as a part-timer last year, this year is the real deal and I’ve found I’ve had to get organized really quickly in order to survive.  As the new year approached, I read, watched, and listened to everything I could from the instructional coaching online world. I have slacked on teaching poetry this year. Big time. As in, we’ve barely even glanced at poetry. I knew that had to change during these last few weeks of school, so I started doing some research. Thanks to Pinterest, Instagram, and the many blogs that I follow, I have found a plethora of awesome ideas! I thought for my day 4 of 7 posts, I would share what I’ve found. Paired Text Analysis: Short Films + Poetry from Reading and Writing Haven I love Melissa’s ideas for pairing poems and short films! Giving students a visual as part of their analysis just might help increase their engagement. I can’t wait to try this!! Poetry Stations from Laura Randazzo Here are some great station ideas for teaching poetry to older students. Ideas include blackout poetry, paint chip poetry, reversal, and more! These are ready to use–Laura has provided the how-tos and printable instructions for the stations! This year I had the amazing opportunity–thanks to an extremely supportive administration team–to be a part-time instructional coach in the high school where I’ve taught for 9 of my 12 years. It was an exciting and enlightening year, to be sure. As much as I struggled, I feel so lucky to have been given this chance. I truly had no idea what I was doing. I read books and blogs and connected with instructional coaches locally and all over the country, but there was a lot to learn. As the year wraps up, I can’t help but reflect on what I learned over the course of the year. 1. Don’t make assumptions I tend to surround myself with people who are like me: ambitious, passionate, and gung-ho about trying new things! I hang out with other teachers who have these traits and/or appreciate these traits in me. I am always reading blog posts, writing posts, reading PD books, connecting on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram, starting Voxer chats and book studies.
