Forgiving Yourself and Embracing God’s Grace Go Hand-In-Hand

From the outside it all looked quite picture perfect. Handsome husband. Two beautiful toddlers. Financial stability. Active in church ministry. Always quick with a smile and an encouraging word.

And it wasn’t as if my smile was disingenuous. I treasured my husband and children. Gratitude for all of God’s blessings filled my heart. The world needs happiness and smiling is one easy way to cheer up another, so to me, wearing a smile was an easy action.

But what most people didn’t know was that on the other side of my picture perfect, lay a curtain of shame. That shame brought tears behind closed doors and a battle with the enemy of my soul. It perpetuated the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual comparison of myself to everyone and everything around me.

“Comparison is the thief of joy” – Theodore Roosevelt

Bearing the load of shame wears us out.

The days become long and the tears many. Depression seeps into the crevices of our soul. It hides from the world, but eats away at who God intends for us to be and at the freedom with which He desires us to live.

My past held much that grieved my heart. It was filled with confusion, mistakes and missteps. Then compounded by painful rejections at the hands of those I thought I could love and trust the most.

Somewhere, at some point, I locked eyes with rejection and held onto its gaze. I received it as my truth and my identity. There I remained stuck for far too long.

Watching. Asking.

What is it that I am missing?

Why am I less than everyone else?

What will make me worthy of approval?

I saw the best of everyone else and the worst of myself.

Do comparisons leave you seeing the best in others and the worst in yourself? #getunstuck #somethingbetter #hope

When I look back I am amazed at God’s hand in my life even when I didn’t understand the power of His love. He gave me wisdom, strength, courage, tenacity, discernment.

I was a survivor – surviving abortion, an abusive marriage,  and a disease that nearly took my kidneys.  Struggling through the financial impact of a divorce and medical bills, I still flourished in a teaching career. I was tough.

I knew it wasn’t healthy to remain stuck in rejection and shame. So, I did the work by going to counseling, talking with my pastor, and reading the right books.

It helped a little. But not enough to tear away the shame wrapped tightly around me.

You see, I failed to use one of our most powerful weapons in the fight against shame —the weapon of forgiveness.

For me, it wasn’t the forgiveness of those who had sinned against me. I had crossed that bridge and felt that layer of pain and bitterness lifted. But instead, it was the forgiveness of myself.

I entertained the idea of Jesus forgiving me, but somehow I couldn’t forgive myself. I was in a self-made prison of defeat with the key to unlock the door in my hand. God’s love and grace were freely offered to me, only I wouldn’t embrace it. Instead of accepting His grace — His key to freedom and victory — I pushed Him aside and punished myself.

Can you accept God's grace and forgive yourself? #somethingbetterseries #hope #comparisontrap #forgiveness

But God.

He gave me one moment where it all became too much. Every failure and rejection flooded my spirit.

But God

He gave me one friend who spoke truth in love and followed it with a plan of action.

But God

He gave me the space of a trusted environment. All the shame and pain that ravished my soul poured out in that space where two or more were present. With His light now illuminating the darkness, the enemy’s hiding places were revealed. Prayer moved mountains and victory was claimed.

That evening, the enemy’s perpetuated cycle stopped. His grace and Truth replaced shame. Rejection was given back to its rightful owners. I began the process of denying its power over my life.

It was a great big step toward my something better with Jesus.

Are you ready to begin the process of denying shame its power over your life? #forgivingyourself #hope

Today, I choose to live out my something better in the arms of God’s love and grace. I still have that handsome husband. Those toddlers are teenagers and our third treasure is a not far behind them. And I still have my smile — even on the hard days.

The difference is that now the curtain of shame is torn away. Life still gets hard. Hearts break and relationships disappoint. But with the shame erased, comparison doesn’t control me.

Satan still attempts to lure me with the familiar habits of my past. He hits where he knows the weakness lay. So, when I step out into the brave, I hear the whispers of comparison in my mind. Sometimes I even entertain them a moment longer than I should.

But God.

He taught me to accept His grace and forgive myself. He taught me to speak His truth because it reigns over all other words ever spoken.

To help you learn to speak God’s Word over your life, I wrote the below 5 statements directly from Scripture. I noted the Scripture references within each statement. So, if you are in a place of struggling to forgive yourself — struggling to embrace the love and grace of Christ in your life, will you speak these declarations of Truth over your life? Will you speak it when the enemy prowls and forgiving yourself isn’t easy?

I am thankful to be a cracked and broken vessel giving a pathway through which Your power and beauty can shine. (2 Cor 4:7)

My weaknesses are proof of your strength. (2 Cor 12:9)

I do not live to compare myself to another because then I will only be tossed into confusion (2 Cor 10:12) But instead, I strive to be an imitator of You, Lord (1 Cor 11:1, seeking only Your approval (Galatians 1:10)

You call me wonderful and marvelous. (Psalm 139:13-14)

I have no need for fear. (2 Timothy 1:7)

Speak these 5 Declarations of Truth over your life and begin to embrace the love and grace of God's forgiveness #forgivingyourself #hope

Through our adoption journey, God brilliantly showed us the power of living surrendered. We discovered the peace that comes when we walk in God’s will and trust wherever He takes us. Finding that doesn’t usually come along golden paved roads, though. It comes along the broken ones.

A few months ago, as a part of the The Way We Pray series, one of my favorite bloggers joined us and gave us a deeper look into the Lord’s Prayer. She dug deeply into Matthew 6:9-13 breaking it down line by line so that we could understand why the Lord’s Prayer is so powerful and why Jesus would teach us to pray in this way. You can check out Natalie’s post on the Lord’s Prayer right here. And if you want to know more about Natalie, you can find her at Milk and Honey Faith! It’s a stop you won’t regret!

Why is the Lord's Prayer so powerful? And why did Jesus teach us to pray this way? #prayerresource #prayer

But that post did some remarkable things. Thousands of readers have come to my site for that post alone which tells me that many of us are longing to understand prayer more. Something brings us back to it time and again. We feel the power in it, but don’t understand it.

We wonder – is it nostalgia? Or is there more? The answer is yes. There is more. The Meaning of the Lord’s Prayer

Imagine the 12 Disciples, having given up everything to follow Jesus, they spent day and night with Him. They lived alongside Him witnessing His miracles, watching His prayer life and witnessing His relationship with His Father.

Next, take your imagination to the crowds of people drawn to Jesus. Listening and watching, they knew there was something different about Him. They, too, witnessed and experienced His healings and miracles. They gathered around Him longing for more. Often, they simply wanted to touch Him.

They chose Him and followed Him, yet all still wondered, “How do we pray?”

Imagine the 12 Disciples. They chose Jesus over the lives they already were living and followed Him, yet all still wondered, “How do we pray?” #prayer #prayerresource

Jesus gives the answer to the 12 disciples when they ask Him as written in the book of Luke. Then again, he answers the question in Matthew 6:9-13. But this time, it’s not to just the disciples. It is to the crowds during the Sermon on the Mount.

In each scenario, He provides a framework for prayer. Not merely words to utter by memory. But a framework for connecting heart and soul to our Father.

He knew it wouldn’t only be the disciples or those crowds having this very same question — it would be a question that would stand for all time and all believers.

Jesus knew the questions surrounding prayer would stand for all time. #prayer #newresource #printableresource

He knew you and I would wonder. And as always, He planned well in advance to give us all we need to walk in relationship with Him. To grow deeper in our faith and to boldly approach the throne in prayer.

“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” -Hebrews 4:16 NLT

After I witnessed the sheer volume of people coming to my site in search of answers to the Lord’s Prayer, I began to pray about a way to feed that hunger. A way to educate and equip. Our church hosted a 24-hour prayer event where I was in charge of one of the prayer stations. Since our theme was prayer and the book of Matthew, I jumped on the opportunity to bring my written and live ministries together.

So, today, I offer you the result of those two worlds.

A free prayer resource perfect for individuals, small groups, or ministry events.

It is designed to help us grasp the full meaning of the Lord’s Prayer, rather than as merely a set of memorized words. It teaches us the framework Jesus provided and helps us apply the Lord’s Prayer to our the prayers of our daily life.

God wants us to approach Him with confidence – boldness! And although He loves us to come to Him in prayer as a pouring out of our heart, He knows our confidence grows when we have both knowledge and practice.

As a mother, we really do the impossible! Not just in the day-to-day work, sacrifice, and love. But in the essence of what we are meant to do. We go from our child’s complete dependence on us to setting them free. We take responsibility for their every moment, yet are expected to find our way to equipping them to thrive independently.

One extreme to the other.

I often wonder how a mama does it without Jesus.

I often wonder how a mama does it without Jesus. #mothersprayer #mothersday

Surrendering to that process isn’t easy, is it? And ultimately, surrendering those we love most – even when it means surrendering them to the One who loves them beyond measure – sometimes feels impossible. How do we not let fear take over? How do we not allow the tendency to hyper-control our world steal our children’s opportunities to become the best of who God calls them to be?

There is so much to this surrendering as a mother.

It’s surrendering when mothering doesn’t resemble the dream we’ve carried for a lifetime. It’s when our children make choices that grieve our hearts. Or, when mental or physical illnesses strike.

We are forced to surrender to the effects of broken families, financial limits, and differences that drive wedges between us and the ones we love.

Wherever you are in your mothering journey – just starting or years down the road – you will find yourself called to surrender.

Wherever you are in your mothering journey – just starting or years down the road – you will find yourself called to surrender. #surrenderedhearts #mothersprayer

You see, our children belong to God first and foremost. They are merely on loan to us while we are all here on earth. He allows us the privilege of parenting our children.

Although this reality surfaces often in our lives, two pivotal moments of surrender stand out sharply in my own collection of memories. One of those I describe in detail in my book, Surrendered Hearts. It was when I had to surrender the child I believed to be my daughter, back to God. I had to find a way to praise Him in the middle of the loss and fill my heart with gratitude for the opportunity to be this child’s prayer warrior for all the days of my life.

And the other time was just a couple of years ago. It was when I finally surrendered both my fear and the need to control all things in regards to our daughter’s special needs. You see, after we brought her home, our world was turned upside down by unforeseen special needs. For the next few years, I wore myself weary searching for doctors and researching every possible solution to restore my daughter’s health.

I didn’t want to accept any limits to her life. I had one vision of wholeness for my daughter and lost myself in that vision. Not standing with arms open, I was unwilling to receive God’s version of the story -to see the possibility of life beyond my own version.

But surrender did come and with it, peace washed over my soul.

A Mother’s Prayer

I began seeing wholeness differently. I understood love in a new way and I realized that even if my daughter never lived an independent life, she was whole – victorious – and free.

Today we are a different family. We are stronger now. Our bond deepened and our footing solidified. I see that our daughter is making a deep impact in this world just as she is. God’s version of her story reaches further than any of my prior dreams.

So today, sweet mama friend, feel my love. See me looking into your eyes and whispering the word “surrender” over your life.

Do what you can – that which God gives you to do – then surrender the rest. Don’t push beyond what your mental and physical health can bear. And don’t let fear rule your heart because fear, just as the Zach William’s song says, is a liar.

“ … The devil was a murderer from the beginning. He has never been truthful. He doesn’t know what the truth is. Whenever he tells a lie, he’s doing what comes naturally to him. He’s a liar and the father of lies.” -John 8:44 GW

Satan is the author of all lies. One of those lies is fear. Fear keeps us from our best. It causes us to act in extremes rather than in purpose and in sound judgement. He tries desperately to hide God’s truth. The truth that says with God all things are possible (Matt. 19:26). He is our defender (Ex 15:2-4) who will make a way (Is 43:16-19). He sees us (Gen 16:13) and will never leave us (Heb 13:5).+

Mama, take that step today.Surrender.Trust God with the child who was His long before they were yours.

Trust Him to walk you through all your days of parenting. Through the hard times and the celebrations – the differences and the unity. Trust God to hold you and your child tight all the days of your lives. Look to Him and His Word for wisdom to know when to do and when not to do – when to speak and when to remain quiet.

And, most importantly, get in battle ready mode.  The fiercest of battles are fought on our knees in prayer. A mother’s prayer will last forever and pass from generation to generation. If we can do nothing else, we will still move mountains with prayer.

**As I close today and in honor of Mother’s Day, I’m leaving you with two things:
  1. A mother’s prayer to give you the words you maybe just can’t find right now. It’s a place to start your battle cry. A prayer for every mother. You can right-click and print or find the printable pdf in the Library of Hope which is available to all my subscribers!

Sometimes I think we have way too much in common with confused little ducks!

The streets gently curve around a little man-made lake. The lake and grassy green belts are on one side of the street while the housing developments and larger busier streets lie on the other side of the street.  I drove that route every morning on the way to my boys’ school. It was a beautiful drive.

Several times a year, though, I had to sharply hit the brakes in order to save the life of a wandering and confused duck or two. The possibilities of what lay on the other side of the road lured them away from safety. Sadly, they encountered one of two things. A permanent end to their life journey right there in the middle of the road, or, if they managed to find their way unscathed across the road, they found themselves in a world of sidewalks, homes, and no water.

Not ideal for a duck. Especially in the Arizona desert.

If only they could see the big picture and the negative impact their choices would ultimately have on their lives. Over the years, I jumped out of my car a couple of times shooing them back toward the water. But, with determination, they plowed forward into their demise.

It reminded me of my own life choices. Just like them, I’ve been drawn by the lure of what looks better than my now.

How about you? Do you sometimes get lost in the lure of a something better?

Have you been drawn by the lure of what looks better than your now? A lure that had negative consequences? #livesurrendered #hope

If so, aren’t we, in a funny but real kind of way,  just like those meandering, oblivious, and confused little ducks? Do we miss what we have in our very own homes? Do we lack the gratitude of the blessings we have? Are we so busy gazing at the horizon that we miss the here and now?

Just like I felt concern for those ducks, our Heavenly Father looks at us with concern, and even grief as He watches us. God has a plan for us and sees the big picture. I imagine He shakes His head and thinks something like, “Oh sweet child of Mine, you are only buy nolvadex online with mastercard adding grey hairs to your head by going in that direction. Be still. Look up! Use what I’ve given you to discern My will. I will direct your path.”

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

God has a plan. A good plan.

Yet, we don’t pay attention.

Eyes down, we plow full steam ahead into unhealthy situations that leave us with regret.

The signs were probably there. God’s will was evident, but we missed it because … well, just maybe because we didn’t stop long enough to discern God’s direction. Maybe we didn’t filter our choices through God’s Word. Or, maybe we didn’t go before Him in prayer asking for His direction and revelation.

Friends. I’m not advocating life without dreaming. Pursuing our dreams is important! God has a plan for us and wants us to dream BIG so that we discover and walk fully in that plan.

However, as with every good thing, we must find the healthy place. A place of balance instead of extremes. And, honestly, balance is not easy. The world pushes us to extremes.

The enemy rejoices in our extremes because he knows it diminishes the power of our Kingdom dreams and goals.

“This is God’s Message, the God who made earth, made it livable and lasting, known everywhere as God: ‘Call to me and I will answer you.

I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.’ Jeremiah 33:3 MSG

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8 ESV

God has a plan for you. His plan. Seek Him first and discover that call on your life.

Dream BIG!

Look Up!

See all that He has already given.

But most importantly, seek His Word and heart in the matter. Then cross that road. It may not have some bumps and hiccups along the way, but a road leading to God’s plan will never be met in demise. Following Him will bring clarity and leave you with peace.

@thatgirlkoki is sharing thoughts on trusting God with our story even when we have to try again. #chosennotcheated #newauthor

Again can be such an exhausting word.

Every time I think about it, memories of my dad teaching my brother and I how to swim come to mind. Take a deep breath. Let the air swell in your lungs, lunge forward and give it your best, he’d say. I’d nod, bring my hands together, body all gangly and shivering in the cold as I stood on the opposite end of the pool and tell myself to go for it.

Remember to breathe, he’d say a little louder as I did my lap. Right. If you’re a swimmer, then you know that your lap and form is as good as your breathing technique. And once you’re done with your mediocre lap? You’d get a pat on your back and get asked do it all over again.

That’s how I see again. That’s how I hear again. It’s a sore word in my life in more ways than one.

Again was my 2018 word.

Not too long after neighbours came out of their homes to watch the fireworks and shout Happy New Year into the night sky, the journey of again began for my husband and I. It’s as though we found ourselves standing on the crux of every promise God had ever spoken to us.

Have you ever felt that every promise God has spoken to you was about to happen? And then it all fell apart? @thatgirlkoki

That book my husband had tried to publish right before we got married but couldn’t because we had a wedding and marriage to think about? God gave it a green light. And He miraculously provided for it. We danced for joy, did our research on publishers and went for it only for it to be a disaster. The first shot to our hearts and dreams.

That career in media God had spoken numerously about over the years for me, the one I had quit on because doors kept shutting me out, He was saying to try again. And He started by telling me to write the book He said to because, get this, if I didn’t, He’d take it away. Not my gift but the anointing.

The season of becoming parents had come so we went for it. And I became pregnant immediately. Oh the joy in our hearts! Until…we miscarried a few months after. Even as we healed and tried to make sense of it all, we got pregnant again. Only to lose the baby again, even after our pastor told us it wouldn’t happen again. We were left cradling questions instead of a baby again.

Like I said, again was my 2018 word.

Don’t be afraid to dream again. I was. Don’t be afraid to try again. I am.

Are you afraid to dream again? #chosennotcheated @thatgirlkoki

It’s not easy trusting God in the same place where you feel broken. It’s not easy trusting that God still has good plans for you in the very place you feel cheated. And even beyond my dreams, God has asked me to cast my net again in the very place of my failure. In the very place of my loss. In the very place of my pain.

It’s not easy. It’s not fun. We’re scared.

It's not easy trusting God in the same place where you feel broken ... where you feel cheated. #chosennotcheated @thatgirlkoki

But His hands hold on to mine and He looks me squarely in the eyes, gaze so warm you want to just soak in it, and He whispers, again. I know His heart. I know He is good. And I can feel my soul grow wings. I’m still scared, but He’s here with me, reminding me that presence is always the best answer and here looks better when it’s in front of you, holding you, sticking around.

My story, much like yours, is a universal story.

Like me, you’ve probably cradled failure. Promises made to you have been broken. Dreams you gave your all for, even the ones that found home in your heart unexpectedly, have suffered loss and gathered dust in the waiting and door closing. I hear you.

Sis, I wonder if God is standing at the door of your heart right now whispering again even as you shout no. Like Peter in Luke 5, no matter how exasperated you are, won’t you let Him into your boat? Won’t you let down your net again, in the very place of your failure again at His word?

I don’t know what you’ve been through or what lies you’re battling now. I don’t know the bruise that again presses heavy on your heart. But I know that God is a God of plot twists. And even though He can do it all by Himself, sometimes He asks us to partner with Him for the turnaround we ask for in our lives with that word — again.

God is a God of plot twists. Won't you let down your nets and trust Him with your again? #chosennotcheated @thatgirlkoki

What if again is a mind and heart shift about the way we see ourselves, how we see our situations and God?

What if again is a chance to truly mean it when we say God is good in the bitter and in the sweet? Or that again is how our sailor hearts become seaworthy? What if again is the answer to the prayer you’ve been making all those years? Would you trust Him then? Would you trust the process with its twists and turns?

God’s again is an ask that won’t quit. Won’t you unfurl the corners of your heart and trust Him with it? He writes the best stories and yours is no exception.

And maybe, just maybe, we’ll see again for the beauty intended by the One who speaks it.

About Koki’s New Book, Chosen Not Cheated

Chosen Not Cheated is a story about going back to the place where the light shone in your eyes. Back to the place where you feel weightless, and with your dreams within reach. It’s a story about becoming in the in-between, thin and hard places you find yourself in life. And it’s seeing for yourself, I mean really seeing for yourself, all the ways you’re chosen by God no matter how cheated you feel. This is about scars, journeys, and stories. Yours and mine. Chosen, not cheated.

“Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.” -Psalm 69:20 KJV

Have you ever felt like this? I have. Just this week I found myself hurting over what others had said or done.  I knew their intentions were not to hurt me; however, I found myself buried in despair.  I cried out to God and was brought to these scriptures:

“Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why are you restless and disturbed within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall again praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.” -Psalm 43:5 AMP

God Is With You When Others Are Not

I knew that I should not feel this way.

As a Christian who trusts God, I still found myself hurt by the words or absence of words of others.  I had learned that we cannot rely on others. Other people, whether they are your parents, children, spouse, friend, or pastor.  People will let you down and disappoint you. After all, they are just people. The Bible says that we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) We must give to others the grace we, ourselves, so desperately need.

Jesus is the only one who can fill the voids in our lives. The void calls out to Him. #hope #godslove @ChantelWebre
Click To Tweet

As well, we have to realize that Jesus is the only one who can fill the void in our life.  No one else can. The void calls out to Jesus. Once we accept Jesus in our hearts, it is our daily relationship with Him that determines how filled we are.

This was where I found myself.

I was trusting God, or so I thought, yet I could not get rid of the heaviness. I had to let go so I talked to God. God already knew what I was thinking and feeling; however, when we say it out loud, we release it and let go. God taught me this principle many years ago so I needed to get back to the basics. “Just talk to God.” As I talked to Him, He led me to Psalm 69:13-18. There I laid down the heaviness of my heart.

I learned that although I was discouraged when others weren’t there for me, God needed me to trust Him. As I talked to God, I found rest. In rest, I found that God was bringing something new in my life. God knew I would be going through a lot of changes – and changes are not my strong suit.

God was trying to prepare me. Had I stayed upset at what others said or did, I would have missed the rest for which God was preparing me.

Rest I would need for the days ahead.

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.” -Psalm 62:5-8 NIV

In God’s presence we find rest.  It is refreshing and gives us all we need.  If you find yourself discouraged, give it a try.  Bring all you have to Jesus. Let God weed through it. Sit at the feet of Jesus and let His presence wash over you like a waterfall.  Be still and wait. I promise when you do this, you will be full and will not lack anything.

Security, peace, love, and joy. It is waiting for you.

A Prayer

Father, I know I should not look to others to fill my needs and should listen only to You.  I am sorry if I am looking for others to lift me up. Search my heart O Lord and so me where I have faltered.  I need to admit the negative comments, or no comments at all, are hurtful. Yet, I must also realize I have nothing to complain about as Jesus and the disciples succumbed to worse.  I just want to share with You how I feel. I know You know already; however, I do not want to hide it in my heart anymore. I want to open up to You and lay it down at Your feet.

Holy Spirit, You are my Comforter.  Father God, You are my God, and there is none like You.  I ask that You fill my heart with Your love. Father, thank You for everything You have done in my life and for what You are still doing.  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Last week we had a special day in our home. Eight years ago today we walked into an orphanage in a tiny village in Bulgaria and walked out with our daughter forever in our arms.

It’s a miraculous day. One that forever changed us as a family. Yet as much as we celebrate that day, it’s also a day marked with pain. I’ve written about it before – the fact that adoption is God’s beautiful way of making beauty come from ashes.

Every adoption story begins in grief.

And for anyone who has walked the pain of grief, you know that the pain of loss doesn’t magically disappear because of a new beautiful that enters your life. The loss is still there. It weaves its way throughout your life. It doesn’t take away from the new beautiful, instead it creates a unique poignancy to it.

So, on this day, yes, we celebrate our beautiful daughter. But we grieve with her, too. Because her speech and ability to process and express herself is limited, we don’t know exactly what she is thinking.

But she’s talked of a few memories that seem to hurt deeply as she cries. And then she acts out and pushes me away. Then, even though my mind understands the grief, my heart aches and my own tears fall.

On days like today I think about the years of prayer before she came home. And I am reminded to never relent in those prayers because prayer changes things.

Because adoption blows us away with the beauty of love, we fail to realize that every adoption story begins with the broken and begins with grief. #prayer #hope

It was as if He’d spoken to me. No, not that audible Morgan Freeman-as-God type of voice. But in a way that I felt the message to the core of my soul. It was a message that said I needed to pray for the hearts of my boys. Pray like crazy that they will love their sister well no matter what happens.

At the time we didn’t even know who our daughter would be. We only knew that we were beginning to step into the waters of international adoption.

It was one of the steps toward full surrender. Because I loved praying and knew the power of prayer, it wasn’t a huge step. Yet, still an act of obedience and trusting God’s lead. So, I prayed for the hearts of our boys.

I prayed for God to:
  • Prepare their hearts to love their someday sister well in all circumstances.
  • Place a desire in them to be Godly role models for her.
  • Instill gentleness within them for all matters pertaining to their sister.
  • Extinguish any jealousy from rising up within them.
  • Reveal Himself to them as the very Heart of adoption.
  • Ignite a passion within them to forever advocate for adoption.

Every mama wants her children to love each other well. Let's start by praying because one prayer makes all the difference! #livesurrendered #prayer

Two years later, after great heartbreak and even greater joy, we brought their sister home. Our hearts were full and we knew we were finally the family God had designed long before time.

Yet, as I write about in my book, Surrendered Hearts: An Adoption Story of Love, Loss, and Learning to Trust, all adoption journeys weave both grief and joy into its very fabric. Just as our story to our daughter contained both grief and joy, our story on the other side of home held much of the same.

As much as we prepared as a family and learned along the way that anything was possible, our vision of homecoming didn’t align with the reality we faced.

When our vision of what will be turns out differently than what is, it hurts. It takes a lot of faith, prayer, and surrender to embrace the new reality. #livesurrendered #prayer

Each of us entered with our unique hopes and dreams, but found an upside-down world greeting us. Broken lives and broken people had left their impact on our sweet girl. Not only were her physical health needs beyond what any of us knew about, but the enemy had worked heavily on her emotional health as well.

We were in for a fight. A fight to save our little girl. One that meant almost daily drives into Phoenix Children’s Hospital to see specialists, therapists, and run more tests than I could keep track of. That lead to medications, treatment plans, and learning how to be a new kind of family.

A family that could face the chains of discouragement, fear, and hopelessness but not succumb to them.

Our world was turned upside down. Two boys ages nine and six had every right to be angry – to complain – to resent.

But never once did their love waver or fade.

Yes, they had tears and needed to talk. But it came from a place of grief and learning to embrace what was.

To this very day, almost eight years after she has come home, their love for their sister continues to blow our family away. We’ve witnessed the undeniable hand of God in their lives and on their hearts. We’ve witnessed how prayer changes things.

Our Selah knows she is loved. She knows she is a princess to these boys and looks to them like her knights in shining armor.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. -1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV

Last fall on a hot Arizona evening, our high school celebrated homecoming. As a Junior in high school, one would think our son would want to join friends and do what regular teenagers do. However, instead, he and his 13-year-old brother brought their very excited little sister to the football game so she could enjoy the fun.

For them, her joy is their joy. It rises above friends and parties and school activities.

… Only the hand of God.

I have to believe that voice I heard nearly 10 years ago telling me to pray for them to love their sister well was Him. What if I hadn’t listened? Or hadn’t prayed those prayers? What might our lives be like now? Would I have foregone the maturity of love that now lives in the hearts of these boys? Might our family have struggled even more?

Friend, you may not be on an adoption journey like us. But chances are you are embarking on something – career change, relocation, school decision, relationship, or ministry. Maybe you are facing a new chapter in life that you never wanted to face such as divorce or loss.

Whatever it is, take a moment to stop and listen. Read the Word of God, worship, praise, and friends, above all, pray.

It is the most powerful thing you can do as you face your next journey.

Prayer is the most powerful thing we can do for our children. #prayer #hope #livesurrendered

The Moments of Hope Link-Up

My last words here are ones I have wrestled with for awhile now. You see, I love what the #MomentsofHope Link-Up has done over the years. I love those I have met and encouraging others to continue sharing words that point to Jesus. But friends, it seems I simply can’t keep all the blogging “balls” high enough in the air as I juggle them … right now.

My intention has not only been to share hope with my readers. It has been to share hope with you, the writers, as you share your words with the world. So, when I can’t visit and promote those who link up here as much as I desire, my heart is burdened. I want to be one of your greatest cheerleaders and I just can’t do it well right now. But it’s not forever. My hope is that the #MomentsofHope Link-Up will return in the fall.

But wait … don’t think I won’t still be here sharing all that God places on my heart! I will still be here on Thursdays (most of them anyway

I also have some projects to complete (including some new additions to the Library of Hope) and a few new speaking engagements to fit into my days.

So, it’s not really like “good-bye”. It’s more like the scenery is changing for just a bit.

If you haven’t signed up on my email list, now would be a great time. I’ll be able to let you know what I’m working on that way! Also, you can find out what is going on through social media. You can “like” my pages directly from the sidebar or use these links. I love hearing from you!

I don’t remember when they first breathed hope into my life and made it clear just how much it means to have God for me. But I do know that again and again God has proved His promises true. He always steps into the difficult places of my life and builds them into something new —often something far beyond my wildest dreams.

They are the Words that help me let go and surrender my life to Him —His timing and His version of the story. They are the words that remind me that somehow … someway …

Everything will be okay.

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” -Romans 8:28 NLT

I guess I could call it my life verse (even though it is so hard for me to claim just one). It’s a promise I cling to and one God has shown to be true in mighty ways.

So, when I was given opportunity to review Trillia J. Newbell’s new 6-week Bible Study of Romans 8, I gave a resounding, “Yes!”

This Bible Study is broken down into a 6-week plan. Week One is a little different from the remaining five in that we get the opportunity to spend this first week reading through the first 7 chapters of Romans and responding through the questions and closing devotion each day.

The first week is the most intensive week as we have a bit more daily reading and questions to answer. I like how Trillia gives us this background, though, before stepping into the meat of Romans 8.

One of my favorite aspects of this study is the use of devotions. So often we find two different products: devotions or Bible Studies. In this Bible Study, Trillia brilliantly weaves the two together. If you are a story girl like me, the devotions draw us in deeper and help us to see the text as it applies to our daily lives.

Weeks 2-6 dig deeply into the verses of Romans 8 —what it says about the gospel and the glory of God.

It digs into many of the Truths found in Romans such as:
  • The Spirit is actively at work in us (8:4-11);
  • We are heirs with Christ, the adopted children of God (8:12-17);
  • Our suffering is for a great purpose and doesn’t compare to the glory we will experience (8:18-25);
  • Even in our weakness, the Spirit is at work (8:26-27);
  • God is working all things for our good (8:28);
  • And absolutely nothing can ever separate us from the love of Christ (8:31-39).

So, as you can see, these are some important — life changing — TRUTHS. They are ones we need to hold onto and rest in. They serve as our hope in the middle of the difficult times and as our warfare when the enemy wields his ugly lies to discourage and dismiss us from our purpose and our joy.

This study is for any woman in any season of life. It’s a study for the woman wanting to fully grasp the depth of God’s love and His commitment to us. This study will prepare, give hope, and provide insight into the power of the gospel and the glory of God.

“God’s faithfulness means that His love endures forever. He will finish the good work He began in us. He is faithful because He has said so.” -Trillia J. Newbell

In each of our lives there is a level of tension when it comes to the issue of time. It’s a fight for each of us at some point – some of us more than others. I often joke that I keep praying for more than a 24-hour day, but God never sees fit to grant me that request.

I’ve come to realize, though, that it’s time I wave a white flag in surrender. Fighting time is a battle no one will ever win. Time continually passes and we have no control over it. There simply is no fight to be won.

Yet there is a fight worth fighting. It’s a fight to not miss the moments that matter.

We may not be able to fight time itself. But we surely can fight to not miss the moments that matter! #moments #jordwatches #giveaway @woodwatches_com
Click To Tweet

It’s a battle of chronos versus kairos.

The Bible talks about three kinds of time. Chronos and kairos are two of those Greek words used.

Chronos refers to sequential time. It is the time that continually moves from the past to the present and into the future. The one of which we have no control.

Kairos refers to a right or opportune moment. It’s the moments of our lives. The ones creating markers within the fabric of our memories and making us into who we are today. They determine the kind of legacy we leave behind.

However, this is what I wonder …

As we rush from one thing to the other, burying our heads in our phones and other digital devices, and frantically checking off items on our to-do lists, are we missing out on the moments that matter? Are we too distracted to make the most of the ones that really matter?

As we rush from one thing to the other, burying our heads in our phones and other digital devices, and frantically checking off items on our to-do lists, are we missing out on the moments that matter? #moments #jordwatches…
Click To Tweet
As we fight the boundaries of chronos, are we losing the fight to soak in the kairos that matters?

Therefore see that you walk carefully [living life with honor, purpose, and courage; shunning those who tolerate and enable evil], not as the unwise, but as wise [sensible, intelligent, discerning people], making the very most of your time [on earth, recognizing and taking advantage of each opportunity and using it with wisdom and diligence] … -Ephesians 5:15-16 AMP

Don’t get me wrong, keeping our minds from racing and our emotions from distracting is a tough thing. But it’s a thing worth fighting for –  so that when we look back on life, we see that what mattered most received the best of us.

This week I’m sharing with you (and, yes— there’s a giveaway, too!) the beautiful watches created by Jord. They are a collection of hand-crafted wood timepieces. Created with raw material and a refined design to fit a modern lifestyle. But beyond all that cool information, they are g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s!

You know I don’t do a whole lot of affiliate work or product reviews here in this space because it’s a precious space God has given me to share hope with you. So there has to be something extra special about a product for me to do so. And here’s where Jord got me:

TELLING MORE THAN TIME

The value of a watch is not in being able to tell how much time has passed, but in being aware of the need to make that time count. Moments are bigger than minutes and your watch should tell more than time.

How can a girl learning to be present in the moments that matter most not resonate with those words? Friends, kairos are bigger than chronos. Can I get an AMEN?

Let's not miss the simplest of moments ... like the moments of love #moments #jordwatches #giveaway @woodwatches_com
Click To Tweet
I don’t want to miss the moments to:

Bless others by listening well. When we really hear people we gain perspective through their eyes. We give them an opportunity to be seen and known.

Mark what won’t be mine to have forever. Our kids grow, seasons change, and the cycle of life completes. Our moments in the trenches are ones we never get back.

Notice love. Whether it’s with a spouse, family, or friends – the moments of love are often small. They are in the smile, the sparkle, a hug, or even the simplest of gestures.

No. I don’t want to miss them. Because they matter.

They keep our hope tank filled up on the drier days. They are the gifts given so lovingly by a God who longs for us to soak in His love and grace.

But here’s the deal. The enemy longs to distract us. His goal is chaos. He doesn’t want us to notice the moments nor the recognize them as gifts from God.

So friends, what can we do?

Be present in the moments. Once they are gone we never get them back again! #moments #jordwatches @woodwatches_com

Here are some things I’ve been working on that help me keep noticing the moments that matter:

  1. Breathe deeply. Notice when your body is tense. It is sending you alerts to the needed oxygen.
  2. Take note of the thoughts running amuck. Call out the unnecessary ones as well as the unproductive ones. Intentionally put a halt to them by envisioning a stop sign in your mind.
  3. Look up. Our phones and other digital media are stealing our moments far too often in today’s world!
  4. Find 3 good or positive facts about any given situation. (This works wonders when your brain is on fire with negativity!)
  5. Draw your mind back to the present. Focus on the moment and give it your best.
  6. Smile. Or even better, laugh. Finding the humor in the moments releases tension and helps us focus on the good which usually ends up being the moment that matters.

6 things I've been working on to keep noticing the moments that matter ... what tips can you add to the list? #moments #jordwatches #giveaway @wood_watches

It’s all about hope, so let’s be accountable in doing these 3 things for each other:

  • First, share up to 2 blog post URLs resonating with the HOPE of Christ. The little things and the big that inspire us to lean into Jesus and let Him carry us through.
  • #MomentsofHope is a place to give and get hope, so let’s encourage others in their efforts to share the hope of Jesus. Please don’t link and run! Instead, take a moment to encourage another!
  • Please grab the #MomentsofHope button found HERE, or link back to me.
