Music Matters 2019 was a fun and successful two-day affair which featured speaker, John Atkinson, Editor of Stereophile magazine, and showcased leading industry brands Bowers & Wilkins, Focal, McIntosh, Qobuz, Chord Electronics, Technics, VPI and more. This year’s event featured Denver-based artist, John Vogl, whose work captured the spirit of live music. We caught up with John via phone to learn more about him and how he came up with the design for the Music Matters 2019 artwork.
John Vogl is a freelance illustrator living in Denver, CO. His work is a mix of digital and traditional illustration, with a focus on evocative detail with a graphic sensibility. He works on a variety of commercial, gallery, and personal projects. His dog, Loki, is not very useful as a studio assistant, but still very sweet and cute.
First things first, how John end up in Denver?
I grew up in St. Louis, MO and left my hometown to attend Drake University in Iowa and my passion for illustrating continued to grow. I moved back to St. Louis after school and worked in a letterpress shop and a couple different ad firms, all while freelancing on the side. About 9 years ago I moved to Denver and experienced a layoff that really spurred my freelancing work and after that, I pursued freelance illustrating full-time.
What did you think of the ListenUp Denver Showroom and were there any products that stood out to you?
I was able to get a tour from Phil Murray, and I was really blown away by the quality of the products. We saw everything from Focal bookshelf speakers to the high-end floor speaker that really stood out because of the exceptional sound.
What was your inspiration for the Music Matters artwork?
My idea was to do something that was open concept and to really encompass listening to music and the aspects of enjoying music, as well as ListenUp’s ability to recreate the live music experience. I pulled inspiration from some Blue Note album covers, and I also wanted to incorporate the fact that ListenUp has a big vinyl component. The artwork came out really well and I’m really happy with how it looks.
A big congratulations to our grand-prize winners Carson Haney, and David Castor who each took home a pair of AudioQuest NightHawk Carbon headphones!
We look forward to seeing you at Music Matters in 2020!

Redefining Intercom and Giving Homeowners Smarter Controls
When you think of an intercom you probably imagine a clunky eyesore with limited capabilities circa 1985 and, given the technology we have today, it’s not something you’d expect to consider as an upgrade for your home. But with so many new ways to communicate, we need to redefine the “com” in intercom. That’s exactly what Control4 has done with Intercom Anywhere. Not only does Intercom Anywhere let you speak with anyone in any room, but it also lets you see and control what’s going on in your home while functioning as a highly effective video doorbell. Read on to find out all the things it can do for you.
Answer and Unlock Your Front Door Remotely
The Intercom Anywhere app works with the Control4 Door Station to provide homeowners with two-way audio, high-definition video, and motion sensor snapshots when someone is at the front door. When visitors ring, the door station then calls all connected touch screens and mobile phones giving you the ability to not only see and hear the visitor but also control certain smart home functions. These actions, or scenes, appear in the Intercom Anywhere app and are defined by the owner.
These scenes can be quite comprehensive. For example, you might choose to have a “Welcome” scene that turns on entryway lights and unlocks the front door, then locks it again when the door closes. Alternatively, you might design a “Secure Home” scene that locks all outside doors, rolls down window shades, and arms the alarm just in case you do not trust the visitor.
You might even have a “Delivery” scene that unlocks the front door or rolls up the garage door just enough for a package to fit through. The “Delivery” scene could temporarily disarm your home security and then two minutes later rearm the alarm and send you a notification if the door is not closed.
Of course, scenes like these would mean having smart door locks and other smart home and security devices, all of which can be installed and programmed by Listen Up located in Colorado Springs, CO.
A Comprehensive Solution that Lets You Take Action
Because of other smartphone apps, you might think, “We don’t need an intercom system”, but often our mobile devices are on vibrate or charging in another room. Sure, Intercom Anywhere can certainly be used on a smartphone for simple face-to-face communication, but because of its smart home control and its ability to sync with touch screens and front door station, Intercom Anywhere is a much more comprehensive and convenient solution. You can broadcast a message to one room or all rooms announcing that dinner is ready or that it’s time to go to school, but since its more than an intercom, you could have an “Announcement” scene that flashes lights across the house to get everyone’s attention.
Another bonus is that with Control4 Intercom Anywhere you can have complete visibility into your home even if no one answers. Imagine you’re away from home and want to check in on the kids or perhaps with the sitter—what do you do if there’s no answer on their mobile phone? That’s where Intercom Anywhere’s auto-answer feature comes in handy. With the Intercom Anywhere app on your smartphone, you can choose to connect to any touch screen in your home. The auto-answer feature lets you look in, and communicate with, that room so that you are always in the know and always in control.

Control4 Smart Home Security Delivers True Peace of Mind
Everyone wants to feel safe in their homes. A recent survey by real estate firm Coldwell Banker revealed that homebuyers were highly interested in smart security features. 70% of respondents said they wanted smart fire and carbon monoxide detectors in their next home. Over 60% of the people surveyed were found to be interested in having smart locks, smart lighting, and smart surveillance cameras installed before they moved in.
This kind of data would indicate that homeowners are motivated to use newer technology to keep tabs on their homes and make sure that their homes, possessions, and loved ones are safe. So, if that old-style alarm system with the timed beeps for arming, the inconvenient control pads, and the sensors that inadvertently go off at random aren’t going to cut it, what are consumers looking for?
They’re looking to be aware and be informed at all times about what’s going on at their home. But beyond alerts and viewing a video feed from a security camera, they want a system that is flexible, as well as proactive in its ability to react to potential incidents.
A Control4 smart home security system has the power and intelligence needed to take your Boulder, CO home’s security to the next level. Read on to learn about the security features that can deliver true peace of mind.
With today’s Internet-connected devices, people expect to always be informed of what’s going on. Control4 smart security delivers on that and more. Naturally, you can call up a video feed from a security camera on a smartphone with the Control4 App. When inside the house, the video feed can be seen on a TV screen or a Control4 Touch Screen.
But there is more. If your home is equipped with Control4 Touch Screens, you can communicate with the babysitter that isn’t picking up a call. The Control4 App can connect you directly to any of your home’s Touch Screens for voice and video calling through Control4’s Intercom Anywhere. It’s a smart way to keep in touch with kids, elderly relatives, or anyone else when mobile devices aren’t available.
If you employ smart locks, you can always know whether your doors are secured. If they aren’t, the touch of a button can lock them. If you need to let someone in temporarily, you can see and communicate with them via the Control4 Door Station video intercom/doorbell, when you’re home or away. Did someone leave the garage door open? No worries, you can close it from anywhere.
Naturally, you can receive any alerts that you find useful. You can be alerted when someone is at your door, when there is motion detected on a security camera, and when a door lock has been opened. You can always know who is at your property and what is happening there, in case you need to take action or simply keep an eye on things.
One unique feature of Control4 security is Mockupancy, which manages smart functions in your home to make it look like you’re there when you’re not. A Control4 smart home system can learn your usage patterns for smart lights, automated shades, and even AV systems and simulate those when you’re away, so your home looks occupied while you’re on vacation or just out for the evening. Mockupancy mode is not a pattern that turns on a light at 2 AM; it intelligently analyzes and imitates your history to make it difficult for any potential intruder watching your home to figure out what’s going on.
Smart sensors can monitor environmental conditions and alert you if something is amiss. With a water sensor, you can be warned of a leak from a basement or utility room pipe and take action before the minor leak becomes an expensive flood. Similarly, a temperature sensor can alert you that the wine room refrigeration is not working correctly, to ensure that your valuable wine collection is not compromised.
Beyond alerts, the system has the intelligence to do more to protect without your intervention. If an intruder does break in, a sensor or camera can trigger all the lights to come on simultaneously as well as trigger a siren, which would be a sure way to startle the perpetrator. If a smoke sensor were to go off in the middle of the night, the Control4 system could light a path to the doors, turn off the HVAC system to avoid spreading smoke and flash the outside lights to help firefighters quickly locate your house in the dark.
Control4 smart home security does more than just alert you to trouble. It keeps you connected to your home, putting you in control, and has the intelligence to help you manage the situation too. That’s delivering true peace of mind.

The internet is changing things. It makes it easy to find information, communicate with family and coworkers, and use complex technology.
One of the greatest benefits of an Internet-connected world is how simple it is to shop. Online retailers abound, and you can get anything your heart desires with a few taps on your keyboard. The only problem is that when those items arrive at your door, they’re not always what they’re cracked up to be. No matter the sizing chart, reviews, or specs, you just can’t ensure quality unless you try things out before you buy them.
It goes for your clothing, your car, and especially your multi-room audio system. If you’re thinking about adding audio distribution to your property, here are three great reasons you should stop by our Denver, CO Control4 Certified Showroom before you make an investment.
For all of the technology that goes into a modern sound system, speakers are relatively uncomplicated devices. By that, we mean most of the quality comes from the physical makeup of the unit, not digital manipulation.
And that means sharing physical space with your speaker units can tell you a lot about them. The materials used for the cabinets and drivers should be rigid, the enclosures should be tightly sealed.
In fact, many audio experts recommend simply rapping on the speaker with your knuckles to determine its initial quality. Known as the knuckle test, it’s a pretty quick and easy way to find out if the speaker features the kind of resonance you’ll want in your home.
Of course, if you want to conduct a knuckle test, be sure to ask first!
Where you place your speakers will have a huge effect on how they sound. Even if you’ve been to the store to hear your speakers in action, chances are your local big box retailer won’t afford suitable conditions for your listening experience.
Rooms are filled with audio-affecting elements like furniture, carpeting, and other objects that may impede or enhance the quality.
Our Control4 Certified Showroom closely mimics the conditions of a real living space, and it can help you understand what the speakers will sound like under lifelike conditions.
Additionally, architectural speakers are designed to play while recessed within walls. You won’t get an accurate idea of their sound if they’re just sitting on a shelf. In our showroom, you can hear them the way they’re meant to be heard.
If your speakers are giving you feedback, you’re going to want new speakers. If your speaker dealer isn’t giving you feedback, you’re going to want a new dealer!
Buying speakers is an educational process. Your dealer should know the ins-and-outs of all the available units in their showroom and answer any questions you have thoroughly and effectively.
In our showroom, we have plenty of available staff to make you feel welcome, keep you informed, and help you find the components that work for your multi-room audio system. Plus, you can see how everything works when you integrate technology with a user-friendly Control4 system!
In fact, if you’re ready to find out how audio distribution can change the soundscape of your home, you can make an appointment for a showing right here.
