Last week I went to go see the famous Nanta Show – a non-verbal musical performance – together with a friend. I have never gone to see a non-verbal performance before so honestly, I had no expectations. In the middle of the show, I realized why this show has been running for over 20 years and even in many countries! Anyone can enjoy this, the content and humor can’t really get outdated, and that is because the actors express themselves using hilarious body language, impress us with creative acrobatic moves and use kitchen utensils as musical instruments!

Nanta’s Storyline

The story is simple, a restaurant manager brings his little mischievous nephew and makes him a part of the NANTA family, which consists of 3 chefs, the funny head chef, an attractive female chef, and a hunky guy. The manager orders the chefs to prepare dishes for an unexpected wedding reception. They have till 6 o’clock to finish, with all the kitchen drama and playful games, can they complete the preparation on time?

Best Parts:

Interaction with the audience and getting up on stage: They sometimes let us be in on all the fun and because we had great seats the nephew chef pulled my friend up on stage for a dumpling challenge which was hilarious! they were 2 teams racing to get it finished first, my friends’ team lost unfortunately but we still got to pick up a photo as a souvenir/memory after the show! So if you want to be on stage make sure you buy good seats!

Comical moments: Without spoiling too much, I really want to say that the comical moments were personally my favorite. They have a very creative and skillful way to make the audience laugh. You will get to see funny facial expressions, teasing among the actors and them making a fool out of the audience.

Drumming and acrobatic skills: This surprised me the most. I did not expect them to perform so well. They made music using knives and other kitchen utensils! And they showed some fighting, throwing dishes and some dancing!

Show Details

Locations: Hongdae Nanta Theater and Myeongdong Nanta Theater

Showtime: 1 hour 30 min

Fun fact: This is Korea’s longest-running show in a theatre. Nanta combines the rhythms from Korean folk songs with modern music, creating a non-verbal performance that’s accessible to an international audience.

Recommendation: If you are in the Hongdae area on a Thursday night, take some rest from walking around and enjoy this Nanta show before going out to enjoy Hongdae’s nightlife which attracts a lot of youngsters.

*Nanta at this special price is really a steal because usually, it’s much more expensive and even more so overseas! How to Book – PROMOTION (LIMITED TICKETS) during May 2019

Choose S-seat, any date you want to go see the show and book it fast! There is only a limited amount of tickets for this incredible price so the promotion may end early!

Korean Summers are really painfully hot and humid. A lot of people lose a lot of energy and motivation because of the crazy heat and indoors the airconditioning is usually too strong, making you freeze! Funny thing is that before and during Summer a lot of Korean people prepare for this by eating a lot of healthy food. With all the spring onions and vegetables that are in season, they can make really delicious dishes. Here are the ones we would like to recommend you try!

1. Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup)

A mild yet addicting taste! This dish has a whole chicken filled with garlic, rice, jujube, and ginseng inside a soup! Usually, you eat this together with some Kimchi on the side and dip the chicken in some salt for more flavor. Korean people have a tradition to eat this warm healthy soup during the 3 hottest days of the year (according to the lunar calendar).

There are a lot of Samgyetang restaurants in Korea who specialize in the dish. It has really grown in popularity among locals maybe because of their special recipes for the dish, which are often kept as secrets.

2. Bibimbap (“mixed rice”)

In Korean “bibim” means mixing various ingredients, while “bap” means rice! So Bibimbap basically means mixed rice and is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with seasoned vegetables and gochujang (chili pepper paste), soy sauce, or doenjang (a fermented soybean paste). And lastly topped with an egg and sometimes sliced meat (usually beef). You stir everything together and easily eat it with a spoon!

3. Gimbap (Korean Sushi)

Some people would say that Gimbap it like “Korean sushi” however Gimbap has no raw fish inside its rolls! There are all kinds of sorts of Gimbap, similar to Bibimbap there could be mixed vegetables with bulgogi (beef) inside. There is also, ham & cheese Gimbap, Kimchi Gimbap, Tuna Gimbap etc! This dish is a typical Korean picnic food as well as a fast and simple lunch just like how a western sandwich is!

4. Bulgogi (marinated beef barbecue)

Bulgogi literally means “fire meat” and is made of thin marinated slices of beef or pork, grilled on a barbecue or on a stove-top griddle. You can also make an easy stir fry at home! It tastes a bit sweet and goes so well with rice and vegetables.

5. Japchae (stir-fried noodles)

Japchae is a sweet and savory dish of stir-fried glass noodles and vegetables. It’s a very popular dish in Korea, they normally eat it on Korean holidays such as New Years, Chuseok, parties etc!

6. Jangeo-gui (Grilled Eel)

Jangeo-gui is a grilled dish made with marinated and grilled freshwater eels. Koreans believe this dish is great for men, its suppose to “give them power for the night”. It’s high in protein so it’s also great for people who work out a lot and want to try a new tasty dish.

7. Haemul Jeongol (Spicy Seafood Hot Pot)

Jeongol is a Korean Spicy hot pot made by putting in meat, mushrooms, seafood, seasoning, etc. A big variety of ingredients! Its a bigger more fancier than jjigae which is a Korean stew with one main ingredient such as Kimchi Jjigae.

맛있게 드세요! / Mas-issge deuseyo! / Bon appetite!

Have you ever experienced staying up in the mountains, meditating, eating delicious healthy food and just relaxing in nature? We had a wonderful TempleStay thanks to KoreaTravelEasy. This 2 Day 1-night Weekend package is quite luxurious and well worth the price, I will explain why.

In short, all of this was included:

  • They pick you up from your hotel
  • Start off with a cooking class with a monk!
  • Some free time at Bukchon Hanok Village
  • Stay in a modern but traditional style Korean room (comfortable thick mattress on the floor)
  • Walk around in cozy Temple clothes. Pants, a vest, and shoes!
  • Temple Activities such as meditation, tea time, bell striking etc!!
  • Enjoy a view of nature and still be able to see Seoul city from afar!
  • Yummy vegetarian meals included!
  • Go home with more knowledge of Buddism, Korean Temple culture and new ideas & perspectives on life.
The Temple Food Cooking Class

So apparently they change the menu every day so we were very surprised to see what we were going to make! The dish we made is called 찹쌀옹심이팥죽 –  which is Small dumplings in a red bean porridge. And we ate that together with Kimchi! It was a very fun group activity to do, we followed a recipe and instructions from the monk and we also got to eat are cooked meal for lunch together.

Free time at Bukchon Hanok Village

We stopped by Bukchon Hanok Village for a short time to take some pictures and walk around the area. These are Hanok houses – old Korean traditional houses. A lot of tourists come here to take pictures while they wear Hanbok (traditional clothing) so its quite a unique sight, just remember to be on your quiet side because it’s actually a residential area.

Arrive at the Temple – Our room and a Tour of the Temple

When we arrived at the Temple, we got to see our room and change into really comfortable temple clothes. We also got a nice tour of the temple and learned a lot about the buildings, Buddism and Korean culture. There is even a nice little hut with wide windows where you can go have some tea and read a book.

Our rooms were so neat and modern. Very nice floor heat, bathroom with toilet and shower. There were thick mattresses, sheets, blankets and pillows. So sleeping on the floor was really comfortable and warm! We could also make some tea and drink it on our balcony with a nice view of the mountains and forest.

Temple Activities

There were many fun and interesting activities. Striking the huge Bell in the evening was a really cool experience, the sound is so nice and relaxing. We also learned how to bow (the 108 prostrations) and we walked up to a mountain top to sit and meditate with a nice view. But our favorite part was probably drinking tea together with a monk who had such lovely and wise words to share. And the Tea was of course really delicious.

Bell and drum striking

Meditation on the mountain in the morning

This is one of the views during the evening

Tea time

Temple Food

We really enjoyed all the nice Korean Temple food which is also vegetarian! We were told to eat as much as we like but please make sure you don’t leave a lot of leftover food and to wash your own dishes afterward.

How to Book!

So to sum it all up, if you are looking for a relaxing time but also want to experience a lot of Korean Temple culture this is a really great package! It’s a little on the expensive side but considering all we got it was well worth our money. To book this trip make sure to pick the 2D1N Templestay (2 days 1 night) click here to book it!  But you could also choose the 1-day TempleStay too. This is only for weekends so if you want to stay on a weekday check this package out: WeekDay Tip it looks a bit different and doesn’t include the cooking class.

I wish you also have a nice TempleStay!
