Ahh, postpartum. It’s messy, it’s crazy and wild and emotional and beautiful, all rolled into one. It’s sleepless nights and forgetting to shower. It’s napping when you can and navigating this whole new world with this new little person, who has suddenly become your world. If you haven’t yet, be sure to read THIS POST of mine that I wrote on the postpartum journey, and taking care of yourself and being KIND to your body. And then come back here. I’ll wait. ;)
Today is all about postpartum MUST HAVES! After having gone through this postpartum period three times now, and really soaked in the 4th trimester, I have some tried and true’s that I consider absolute must haves for postpartum mamas! And clearly, I have to share them with you!
TAKE CARE “DOWN THERE” Always Depends (the hospital mesh undies are fantasic for the first few days, but after that I got sick of feeling like I was wearing a mega diaper, so I purchased some Depends. They fit like undies and are actually so comfortable! And for the first few weeks they were fantastic!) Maxi pads (again, my hospital supplied me with mega maxi pads which were great the first week or so, but then I wanted something not quite so “diaper-ish” but still get the job done!) Dermoplast spray (my hospital gave me this) Tucks pads (my hospital also provided this- amazing relief!) Perineal spray bottle (my hospital gave me one, but I preferred this one as it sprays upside down!) Perineal balm + perineal spray (so cooling and lovely!) Nipple cream Silverette cups (yes, pricey, but I honestly think I have these to thank for having no bleeding or cracking this time around! You can also of course use nipple cream instead)
MISC Huge water bottle (literally the instant you start nursing you will be raging thirsty! Drink ALL of the water! It’s good for supply, too)
Snacks (allll of the food!) Haakaa (this thing is an absolute MUST HAVE! You put it on the boob you aren’t nursing on and it catches the letdown, so no more soaking your shirts/bra or wasting milk! It’s actually genius and is all I used for the first few weeks and I built up quite the stash! Highly recommend!) Breast Pump (helps to build your supply, and allows you to have a little break from the nonstop nursing sessions! Plus, I love when Zack or the kids get to give the baby a bottle and bond in that way, too. I was sent the Motif Luna and LOVE it- lightweight, quiet, and efficient! I only have to pump for 10 min at a time!) Nursing pillow (I love both THIS ONE and THIS ONE, and you can find super cute covers on Etsy!) Baby Tracker app (helps to keep track of diapers, feedings and sleep- Nursing pads (I like the washable ones for around the house, and the disposable ones for on the go, since they stick to your bra) Belly Bandit (I haven’t been terribly good at wearing this, but I do when I remember! It just kind of sucks everything in, and holds your core in place) Support Belly Band– I wear this underneath tees so when I nurse in public, my stomach isn’t exposed, it also helps hold my core in place, but isn’t as restricting as the belly bandit Swaddle Blanket (a million uses! I love using these as a nursing cover, since I’m not comfortable just whipping the boob out in public- to each their own, though! Do whatever is comfortable to you!) Baby Wrap/Carrier (because babywearing is LIFE! This is my favorite wrap! And this is my favorite structured carrier!) Lotion (I continue using my stretch mark cream on any new stretch marks, to reduce them and help keep my skin soft!) Diaper Bag (I’ve been using this one a ton and LOVE it! Holds so much and is a backpack, which is the best!) Prenatal vitamins (I also continue to take these! All of the essential vitamins you still need postpartum)
Stool softener (do not skip these! Even if you think you’re in the clear, keep taking them!)
Phew! Did you stick with me through all of that? I hope you found this helpful- please share with your expecting mama friends or postpartum mamas! And let me know what YOUR postpartum must haves are in the comments! Let’s all share the love!

So we are one month into this postpartum journey already! One month of the newborn haze, of sleepless nights, endless snuggles and so much JOY. One month of soaking it all in and not worrying about “bouncing back” or working out or being on any sort of schedule. I must say, it has been pure bliss. This time around, I’ve been so much more calm, I’ve enjoyed all of this postpartum life so much more than the other two times. I know how fleeting it is. As hard as it is in the moment, it’s also filled with so much sweetness and pure joy, and I’m allowing myself to completely lean into that joy and just “BE.”
…3 days postpartum | MAY 10, 2019…
I’m spending as much time as possible like this, snuggled up with my baby. Reminding myself that these days are so long, but so very short, and he’ll nap eventually, he’ll sleep on his own eventually, he’ll need me less and less- eventually- but for now? Right now? He needs me more than anyone or anything. And it feels good to be this needed, as hard as it can be. So here we are.
…2 days postpartum | MAY 9, 2019…
If you are in the midst of postpartum as well, I want you to know, this too shall pass. Give yourself GRACE- abundant grace! Be kind to yourself and your body. It is a temple, and YOU are a warrior! Vaginal birth, C-section, medicated, un-medicated, long, short, single, multiples, however your baby(ies) came into this world, they are a damn miracle, and you are INCREDIBLE! You are strong, you are beautiful and you should never think anything otherwise.
…6 days postpartum | MAY 13, 2019…
Take this journey slowly. Breathe in your sweet baby. Study his every feature, his button nose and his little rolls. Take it slow. Rest. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and absolutely accept it whenever help is offered! Forget the dishes and the laundry. Do what you must (I get it, I have two other kids, mom life never stops!), but take the time to just rest with your newborn as much as you can.
Zack has been INCREDIBLE this entire postpartum period. He has really gone above and beyond, on bathtime duty with Sam and Sophie so I could feed and rest with the baby, taking the kids on little outings, working his butt off so I didn’t have to, and cooking meals (after our meal train ended- another thing I HIGHLY recommend if possible! Having other people bring you dinners and snacks so you don’t have to worry about that for the first few weeks is nothing short of amazing, and such a testament to the importance of community)!
The postpartum body is amazing. 5 weeks in, and I’m in awe every day at what it went through and how resilient and strong my body is. My tummy is softer, my hips are wider, and I’ve got a few more stretch marks this time around. And I couldn’t be prouder or more in love with it.
Creating a baby registry can be overwhelming. There are SO MANY baby items out there- and you “need” all of them- right?! Walmart makes it easy to add exactly what you need to your registry. You can browse by brand, or easily find the top products in their favorites section!
When creating your baby registry, there are a lot of things you should consider. Cost, selection, ease of registry management and of course- perks! Upon creating your registry, you’ll qualify for a welcome box loaded with goodies for your baby!
One of the best things about Walmart’s baby registry is the huge selection of products available both online and in stores. They have just about every baby product I have ever heard of! Looking around, I can count over 50 items that I have personally used with my own babies (and I’m linking my favorites below)!
One tip I have for creating a registry is to try and put a good mix of price-ranges. It’s hard for someone with a $50 budget to choose from a $400 stroller, a $200 high chair and a $20 swaddle blanket. Having something for every budget insures that everyone buying for you will have options! And maybe you’ll get more of what you really want/need! ;)
I have created a few lists below of my favorite baby registry items broken down by cost! There will be an under $25 section, an under $100 section and an over $100 section to help you add a good mix to your own registry.
Under $25 Items
Under $100 Items
Over $100 Items
Some of my all-time favorites are in the above lists, including Sophie the Giraffe, which has been a favorite of all 3 of our kids!
One thing that, at first, seemed like it wasn’t a necessity is the Diaper Genie. I don’t know why we tried to go without one with our first, but let me tell you- changing 10+ diapers/day makes it a necessity! Also, while not getting into too much detail, you don’t want your dirty diapers sharing your other regular trash cans. The Genie is built to hide smells.
Everything linked in this post (and so much more) can all be quickly and easily added to your Walmart Baby Registry. Use the registry to give those shopping for you an easy way to gift you exactly what you need!
One thing that can be a real struggle in this blissful new life as a mama of a newborn is finding the right nursing bra!!! I swear, it took lots of trial and error when I had my first (and honestly I didn’t really find any that I absolutely loved that go ’round for a while!). With my second, I found a few that were my go-to’s, but still none that I absolutely LOVED. Now that I’m on my third round of nursing a babe, I have FINALLY found some real gold standards, guys. These are all GOOD. They hold you in, they are cute and NOT frumpy (can’t stand that, personally), the straps aren’t insanely wide (why does that have to be a thing in most nursing bras?!) and they fit well underneath normal clothes, to help you feel like a normal person, and not some matronly milk machine. Because that’s the last thing I want to feel in my postpartum-ness, ya feel me?!
So, I bring to you today, the BEST nursing bras!
1. EVERYDAY BRA. This is my everyday bra, that I grab for time and time again. This is the perfect “tee shirt bra” and fits seamlessly underneath your go-to tee’s. I have it in nude and black, and can’t recommend enough!
2. LOUNGING BRA. These are SO COMFORTABLE, guys. I always wear these kinds of bras around the house, and was so excited to find a nursing equivalent! Plus, a 2-pack for $15?! You can’t beat that! I have it in grey, white, nude and black! SO GOOD, can’t recommend enough!
3. FOR FEELING SEXY. This one is a favorite of mine, for when you want to feel sexy and cute but still have to get the job done. I love that the lace peeks out underneath a cute cami and adds to your outfit without screaming I’M WEARING A NURSING BRA! It’s super soft and comfortable, too (no itch here!) and comes in a few gorgeous colors. The straps are adjustable, too, which helps!
4. SLEEP BRA.
I have two! THIS ONE and THIS ONE are both super comfortable, and perfect for a sleep bra while nursing! Love how soft they are, and all you have to do is pull over for easy nursing access. Also, no padding or wires or anything like that, so they are really perfect for sleeping!
There you go! My favorite nursing bras! And some bras that you can nurse in, that are not “nursing exclusive:” HERE, HERE, and HERE!
Okay, this one is a long time coming! I shared my everyday 10 minute makeup a while ago, but it is time for a refresh, since I’ve really simplified it and perfected it, and switched up a few things! One of my MOST ASKED questions on Instagram is how I get my under eyes so bright- and I’m going to share my “secret” (lol, it’s not a secret at all) in this post! YAY! Also, my skincare routine (it’s very simple but effective!) and my everyday natural makeup look, all done in 5-10 minutes because #MOMLIFE ;) And especially right now in my life, with a newborn, I really don’t have much more time than that each day to spend getting ready!
FACE CC Cream (in “light”) applied with a damp sponge (these are the best I’ve tried, and only $9 for a set of 5!) Concealer (in “light”- just dab lightly under the eyes with ring finger, and use any excess on eyelids as primer)- this is my “magic trick” and how I get my under eyes so bright and illuminated! I do NOT set with powder, I feel this also helps keep it more natural looking, dewy and bright! Bronzer (I also take a little bit of bronzer on a fluffy brush and use as my eyeshadow! This not only saves time, but gives a nice, natural all-over bronzed look)
EYES Brows (in “medium brown.” This is my favorite one! The angled shape is soooo easy and foolproof to make the perfect brows each time!) Mascara (my holy grail! I do about 3 coats)
Finish with a couple spritzes of my favorite rose water spray and voila! I’m feeling a bit more alive and ready for the day!
I hope you loved this! And remember: if you order anything by clicking through my links, I get a small commission. It is greatly appreciated and how we keep this blog going! :) Please let me know if you tried any of these on my recommendation! I’d love to hear your favorite everyday products, too!
This post is sponsored by FAGE; however, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’ve talked about this a lot here, because it’s so near and dear to my heart: you MUST love yourself. And in order to love yourself, you must take care of yourself. It’s so easy (especially as moms) to put everyone’s needs before our own, and then we are the ones suffering from burn out or exhaustion or just plain feeling like garbage. And nobody wants that. Nobody deserves that! Self-love is NOT selfish. It’s not something to feel like we don’t deserve. It is so important to our well-being and happiness! And you know what they say: happy wife (or mom), happy life! ;) So let’s pledge to never put ourselves on the back burner. Let’s pledge to take care of ourselves and our bodies, so that we can be better able to take care of our loved ones! I want to share a few simple steps to doing this. It’s nothing crazy, it’s nothing far out there or over-the-top, but I think you’ll find that even these little things will make a world of difference!
1. NOURISH YOUR BODY.
This starts from the inside out. Feeding yourself good, real food packed with nutrients will only make you feel incredible! And the benefits are more than that: your skin will be glowing, your hair will be healthier, you will have more energy! It’s amazing, really, the importance of good nutrition, and it’s pretty easy to start! One way I love to nourish my body is with FAGE yogurt- it’s one of my favorite snacks, that is simple and delicious and packed full of protein and good stuff to make me feel good and feed my body right!
2. QUALITY TIME.
Modeling eating well is so good for my kids to see, too! I love eating together as a family. It’s a great way to spend quality time and really connect each day. Bonus if my kids actually eat the same thing I do, too! ;) Which is why it’s important for me to eat healthy, so my kids want to eat healthy, as well! FAGE yogurt with fruit in it is one of our favorite snacks- we all devour our bowls every time! The perfect mix of tangy and sweet, that is so satisfying and fills us all up, giving us lasting energy throughout the day!
3. PAMPER YOURSELF.
I’m not talking anything crazy here, but doing something- just the smallest thing- each day to make yourself smile and take a little bit of time to yourself will make such a difference! Try it! Grab your favorite coffee (even if your kids are in the backseat), paint your nails, do a quick face mask at night, it doesn’t take much, but just taking a few minutes to do something for YOU will refresh you and make you ready to take on whatever comes your way! :)
You’ve got this! I believe in you. It is OKAY to love yourself and treat yourself with the same respect and love that you do your family. It’s more than okay- it’s vital.

He’s here! Our sweet boy, Oliver Lucca Reyes. Born May 7 (my mom’s – and grandpa’s-birthday!) at 9:18 pm. 8 lbs 9 oz and 18.9 in of absolute perfection. It was a very quick delivery! I came in at 8cm and pushed 5 times and he was here! The perfect completion of our little family. His birth story is a good one, and will be up soon! In the meantime, Mama and Baby are doing amazing and really soaking in all of the newborn love and enjoying the 4th trimester- taking it slow and healing my body. Be sure to follow along on Instagram (katie_did_what) where I’m sharing lots of baby spam and my postpartum journey!
Thank you all for coming along on this pregnancy journey with me! I have so many blog posts coming up- Oliver’s birth story, updated hospital bag (with what I used and what I didn’t), postpartum must haves and my favorite nursing bras!
