Not working out enough? Drinking a bit too much? Addicted to conventional makeup and skincare? While we might not think of skincare as part of a detox, what we put on our skin is just as important as what we put in our body! Here our VIP wellness partner, Juice Beauty, walks you through the steps to a truly thorough detox (skincare included):

Get with the plan…

Start by drinking a full 8-10 oz glass of filtered water before every meal, work out for 30-60 minutes every morning (power walking is fine) and replace one packaged food staple a week with a “whole” non-processed food. Then, each day replace one food—either a dairy, a fruit or a vegetable with an organic alternative.

Once you’ve started to getting active, introducing healthier foods and drinking more water, it’s time to think about your skin! Take Juice Beauty’s CLEAN BEAUTY Challenge to discover which toxic ingredients are in your conventional products, so you can decide whether you want to switch to safer and cleaner alternatives.

Why should you detox your skin?

Because it’s important! According to a study from researchers at UC Berkeley, 100 teenage girls from Salinas, California tested 25-45% lower in chemical levels after swapping out their conventional chemical-based products for natural and organic ones! The significant drop occurred in just three days! Imagine the benefits from changing your routine for a month, or even for life.

Which products and ingredients should you seek to detox?

When looking at the labels of your beauty and skincare products, try to stay away from parabens, petroleum/propylene or butylene glycols, phthalates, sulfates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, GMO, silicones, talc, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. For a complete list, go to Juice Beauty’s Clean Beauty page, to discover the full “Unacceptable Ingredients” list.

Try to turn to organic foods and products to limit your body’s absorption of pesticides. Juice Beauty uses USDA Certified Organic Ingredients and follows the guidelines of one of the most rigorous organic standards in the world, COPA (California Organic Products Act). That assures that the majority of all ingredients in your products are made with Certified Organic Ingredients—just what you need to start the detox!

Where do you start, what should you get rid of?

Kick off your skincare detox by switching your sodium lauryl sulfate cleanser for an organic cleanser packed with powerful antioxidants. Try any of Juice Beauty’s Cleansers—if you haven’t tried an oil cleanser, Juice’s Stem Cellular Cleansing Oil is amazing; use it with an organic cleansing cloth. End with a steamy hot organic or bamboo washcloth placed over your face for a real spa-fresh feel. It’s important to know that you can achieve the efficacy you are seeking without compromising your skin.

Two to three times a week after cleansing, exfoliate away those clogged pores by using the ultimate detox product (and one of Kate faves) Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Peel, which comes in Full Strength, Sensitive, Blemish Clearing and even one for Pregnancy.

What next?

Change your daily SPF 30 BB or CC Cream—eliminate chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, etc.)—and move to pure zinc. As for a moisturizer alternative, instead of petroleum fillers, artificial dyes and fragrance, move over to a rich moisturizer with antioxidant packed organic oils; your skin will thank you.

Finally, switch out your makeup; Transition from “eating” conventional chemical lipstick to lipsticks made with certified organic ingredients. It’s been estimated that a woman can eat up to 9 lbs. of lipstick over her lifetime! So make sure you are eating healthful ingredients!

How Juice Beauty Goes Beyond “Natural”

Beyond natural – all the way to certified organic ingredients! Switching to organic beauty is just as important as eating organic foods! Did you know that your body can absorb up to 60% of what is placed on it? Well, it’s true, which is why it’s vital to use healthful ingredients. Starting one of the first health and wellness companies in the country in the early 1980s, I specialized in nutrition and fitness, yet never paid attention to the ingredients in my beauty products. It wasn’t until I became pregnant with my first baby at 40 (and second at 42) that I became keenly interested in what I was putting on my body and actually began reading the ingredients on my beauty products.

I was shocked to say the least! I couldn’t believe the amount of potentially harmful ingredients that were in both high-end prestige and drugstore beauty products. As my obsessive ingredient research continued, it became even more alarming when I found out that these products contained some ingredients that had even been banned from food! That’s what inspired me to radically transform the chemistry of beauty. I set out to grow the Juice Beauty brand with a mission to create luxurious formulations, made with certified organic ingredients that perform better than conventional chemical beauty products.

What is the difference between organic and natural?

Many “natural” products can range from not-natural-at-all to pretty natural, but since there are no real regulations in the natural arena, it’s tough for consumers to understand and sift through all the marketing hype. Think about organic vs. natural as the experience walking into Whole Foods and choosing between green apples marked “conventional” (e.g. sprayed with pesticides) and “organic” (e.g. farmed organically limiting pesticide use). Though the conventional choice may be a “natural” food from the Earth, it can be laden with pesticides. Organically farmed crops greatly limit pesticides, potentially harmful substances and help protect the precious earth.

Benefits? Goodbye Wrinkles!

Ok, now to the fun part… goodbye wrinkles! Studies have shown that ingredients farmed organically can have up to a 30% higher antioxidant level than conventionally farmed ingredients. Higher antioxidant levels means that these ingredients can work harder to fight free-radical skincare damage, and so… goodbye wrinkles!!

What are the risks of using potentially harmful beauty ingredients??

Some ingredients can be harmful to your body. One of the worst culprits is fragrance; literally hundreds of toxic chemicals can be disguised under the word “fragrance,” and these chemicals are known endocrine disruptors. The Breast Cancer Prevention Partners have published numerous studies with top universities on this topic showing the link between artificial fragrance and endocrine disruption. Juice Beauty uses only natural and organic essential oils in our products.

How does Juice Beauty use safer ingredients?

Juice Beauty doesn’t use any petroleum-based ingredients such as carbon black, which is often used in mascaras and eyeliners. Many women expose their eyes to this compound on a near-daily basis! Although Juice Beauty’s alternative is a lot more expensive—and cleaner—than carbon black, we are committed to providing safer and healthier ingredient alternatives. To initially formulate these complex products, our chemists had to experiment over and over again to make sure the black color was holding in the natural pine resin (used instead of conventional, animal-derived glues), and getting the plant pigments (from aubergine, purple carrot, argan husks and more to provide the perfect black was nothing short of amazing!

It’s easier said than done, but we all strive for it. And at Juice Beauty – it’s practically in our DNA (our founder, Karen Behnke started in the health

and wellness industry before wellness was even a thing). We asked our team – what are some things you do to live a balanced life?

Jeff:

Living healthy starts with food & exercise, but for me I need what I call “me time”. What I know for sure is that it helps balance and center me.

It allows me time to be creative and productive with no restrictions. It allows me to organize my thoughts and life, especially with the crazy

hectic lives we all live.

Silva:

Eating healthy and working out (and having a donut or two keeps me balanced).

Image: thehousethatlarsbuilt.com

Erin:

If you work hard, workout harder.

Vinita:

Once in a while I stay in balance by looking at the world upside down. Burning Man’16

Jacquie:

I’m the type who pays attention to every detail, but I also have my eye on the bigger scope of things. I remind myself on a daily basis,

if anything bothers me ‘Try not to sweat the small stuff’ (and when I do, I get over it over quickly). Sleep, eating well, and Soul Cycle

keeps the crankiness at bay (my bike takes a beating). I also take time every morning to center, meditate and listen to music that

gets me energized, positive and happy.

Andrea:

I try to do something creative everyday (this is also Paper Source’s motto), whether it’s making a handmade card, practicing calligraphy

or studying a second language. I enjoy the process and in the end it feels rewarding to have created something.

Molly:

Figure skating keeps me balanced because it brings being active and being creative together. It feels good to do something you love and

express yourself in a positive way while having a great time.

Guest blogger Les, from The Balanced Berry shares her tips and tricks for cleaning up your skincare routine!

“You know that green beauty is something I’m really passionate about. I don’t consider myself a beauty blogger (or vlogger) by any means, but I do think understanding what we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in our bodies. While I’m not here to preach, and I don’t have a 100% squeaky-clean beauty routine, I am constantly on the lookout for new products by brands that don’t use ingredients that are harmful to my health.

The transition to using cleaner beauty products can definitely be a tricky one. On one hand, you don’t want to be wasteful and throw out all the conventional products you have, and on the other hand it can be heard to find clean beauty products that are as effective as their counterparts.

My best tip for easing the transition? When trying new products, get a travel size whenever available. Not only is buying the smaller size more cost-effective, but it gives you a chance to try the product out without committing to a giant container. You have just enough to test out and see how you skin responds. Plus, the tiny sizes are perfect for throwing in your gym bag (and I’m all about having a well-stocked gym bag).

These days, breakouts aren’t my main concern when it comes to skincare because they don’t happen for me very often. I’m more interested in keeping my complexion even, bright, and glowy which is why I’ve been loving the Juice Beauty Age Defy Solutions line.

Juice Beauty is a brand that I have been enjoying over the past few years, and I’m excited to share some skincare goodies that I’ve incorporated into my routine as the season’s change (from winter to spring at the time I’m writing this). Right now, Juice Beauty has some amazing travel-friendly versions of their key product lines that are perfect for trying it out, for your gym bag, or for your next trip.

Here’s a little glimpse into my skincare routine at the moment. I’m a fan of giving my skin the TLC it needs while keeping things as simple as possible.

MORNING

In the morning, I usually just use some warm water to wash my face as I thoroughly cleanse my skin at night. After some splashes of water, I dry my skin and apply Juice Beauty Green Apple Age Defy Serum, followed by the Green Apple Brightening SPF 15 Moisturizer. Then, I apply my makeup and am good to go.

EVENING

My evening skincare routine is a little more involved, as I like to make sure I can treat my skin really well after a long day. To remove my makeup, I use a blend of castor and jojoba oil (I blend the two oils myself). I rub the oil blend over my dry face (no water) to loosen up my makeup, especially around the eyes. I then use a warm washcloth to wipe off the oil and makeup. Next, I use the Juice Beauty Green Apple Brightening Gel Cleanser to get off any remaining makeup, oil, or dirt that may have gotten left behind. I follow this up with either a spritz of rosewater or swipe of witch hazel to tone, and a bit of pure argan oil or rosehip oil to moisturize.

It has taken me years to find a skincare routine that I’m truly happy with, and right now this routine nails it for me.

What are free radicals?

According to the International Dermal Institute, “free radicals may be formed through natural human physiological processes as well as from the environment. They may be the result of diet, stress, smoking, alcohol, exercise, inflammation, drugs or exposure to sunlight and air pollutants. While there are many types of free radicals that can be formed, the most common in aerobic (oxygen breathing) organisms are oxygen free radicals, often referred to as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which include superoxides, hydroxyl anions, hydrogen peroxide and singlet oxygen.”

“Oxygen free radicals are implicated in the overall aging process and are responsible for photoaging, cancer and inflammation in the skin. Oxygen free radicals cause lipid peroxidation, which results in damage to cell membranes and this can cause premature aging, skin cancer and cell death.”

How to expel free radicals

According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, “to prevent free radical damage, the body has a defense system of antioxidants.”

“Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged. Although there are several enzyme systems within the body that scavenge free radicals, the principle micronutrient (vitamin) antioxidants are vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C. Additionally, selenium, a trace metal that is required for proper function of one of the body’s antioxidant enzyme systems, is sometimes included in this category.”

It is of course best if these micro-nutrients are supplied in the diet, and exercise is also helpful to combat free radicals. The New England Journal states that, “regular physical exercise enhances the antioxidant defense system and protects against exercise induced free radical damage.”

Protect skin from free radical exposure

Every day, our skin is exposed to free radical attacks from UV light, air conditioning, radiation, and other harmful environmental forces. These factors can be out of our control especially when we are traveling.

They can be neutralized with antioxidant-rich formulas that absorb into the skin, which is why Juice Beauty is radically transforming the chemistry of skincare with its proprietary base of nutrient-rich certified organic botanical juices, and advanced, high potency ingredients, Vitamin C and fruit stem cells, vegetable hyaluronic acid, peptides, algae, grapeseed, and natural essentials oils.

Protect with Juice Beauty’s Hydrating Mist

Our specially designed travel sets can help combat free radicals when traveling, a combination of antioxidants and a certified organic juice base, so that every drop feeds your skin for a more youthful, healthy looking glow.

“The Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel Spray Transformed My Skin After Just Once Use”

Juice Beauty’s Exfoliating Peel Spray Gets Love From Allure

We are so excited that our STEM CELLULAR™ Exfoliating Peel Spray is loved by Allure, particularly that it has transformed beauty writer, Sarah Kinonen’s skin after just one use…and even better…that days later her skin is still supersmooth, without a flake in sight! – That’s what we love to hear!

Read Kinonen’s full article below:

“As someone who has sensitive skin—meaning my face goes berserk if I introduce it to a single new ingredient—I tend to steer clear of harsh exfoliators. One bad scrub session and I’m left red-faced for days. Which is why I’m always looking for gentler formulations. Enter the Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel Spray, which—as crazy as it sounds—is a spray-on facial peel with a super-easy-to-use mist-on application process.

The treatment itself, which is a superfine mist, is made with a mix of citrus extracts—like grapefruit and lemon leaf—to exfoliate, plus nourishers, like jojoba leaf, aloe juice, and vegetable glycerin, to soften the skin. And then there’s the vitamin C, which brightens the complexion following the exfoliation.

And testing it on my hand at the product’s launch event and getting transported by the zingy scent, I couldn’t wait to take it home. After cleansing my face, I gave the sleek silver bottle a shake and liberally sprayed the formula from my forehead down to my neck. The mist itself is lightweight—almost like the texture of my favorite-of-the-moment fragrance, Giorgio Armani’s Sì Rose eau de parfum—and when it hits the skin, it cools on contact. I think I sprayed on a total of seven spritzes, which left my face wet but not soaked. From there, I let “the juice” soak in for a few seconds before gently rubbing it in with my fingertips. That’s when the magic happened. (Warning: It gets a little gross from here on out.) As I was rubbing, dead skin cells starting pilling on my fingers—the peel was literally lifting flakes from my face. How cool, or gross, if you ask my boyfriend, whom I made watch from the sidelines. After about a minute of gentle rubbing, I rinsed my face, sweeping all the residual skin cells into the sink.

Once my face was thoroughly clean and patted dry, I gave myself a one-two in the mirror. The result? A slightly red but totally glow-y (and supersoft) complexion. The redness took a few hours to subside, but again, I’m chalking that up to my supersensitive skin and the fact that I’m currently in the midst of testing out an over-the-counter retinoid treatment. (Peel plus retinoid might not have been my smartest skin-care move, but a beauty editor’s life is all about living on the edge, am I right?) Aside from the mild redness, I was thoroughly impressed. And a few days later, my skin was still supersmooth, with not a flake in sight.

Perhaps the coolest aspect of the Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel Spray is that it’s TSA-approved. At 1.7 ounces per bottle (for $49 at juicebeauty.com), there’s no limit to when (and where) you can get your peel on. Long flight on the books? Stash this spray in your carry-on for a little exfoliating action midflight. Maybe just spritz it on in the lavatory so you don’t creep out your seatmate?”
