There’s a new airline operating in Vietnam called Bamboo Airways, they began operations on 16 January 2019, my flight with the airline was on 12 March 2019.

Unfortunately, I was not able to purchase my ticket online, as their reservations system does not recognise International credit cards just yet. Upon my arrival in Vietnam at Ho Chin Minh Airport, I took myself over to the domestic airport to book my ticket with their local office. For a walk up fare, the price was great value, USD$50 one way for a flight the following day from HCMC to Hanoi.

THE FLIGHT

The first thing that I noticed upon boarding was the amount of cabin crew onboard the brand new Airbus A321 NEO. I counted around ten cabin crew members but soon found out that this was a training flight for some of them.

Everything was brand new on the aircraft, the flight itself was quite empty with the airline filling around 50% of seats at a guess. If you’re after legroom, the first row of economy class has the most. However, this exit row seat was also adequate.

THE MEAL AND SERVICE

Flight time from HCMC to Hanoi would be around 1hr 50mins departure time was 0545, within 20 minutes after take off the cabin crew commenced the inflight service. Bamboo Airways offer free meals for everyone on board regardless of what you paid for your ticket. Service was very prompt and the crew were so nice, polite and warm. There were two meal choices offered, and I opted for the chicken with noodles the additional option was beef. There are no special meal options currently offered.

It’s clear that the airline has invested in its branding, which even trickles down to their inflight meal trays. The brand was prominent on the meal tray and consistent with their corporate colours, not something you always see on a meal tray. Pictured is the economy class breakfast option with fresh fruit and coffee. About that coffee, it’s probably the best-tasting economy class coffee I’ve sampled. I later found out that the coffee is Organic and a local brand called L’Amant, I ended up purchasing a bag of coffee from the airport duty-free after my flight.

Upon collection the cabin crew offered additional drinks, I opted for another coffee. The service was completed around 45 mins after takeoff, granted it was an empty flight and there were additional supernumerary cabin crew onboard.

The meal itself was traditional, full of flavour but I felt that the portion was a little on the small size. That’s the only negative thing that I found experiencing this new airline.

Bamboo Airways have significant expansion plans ahead, and I wish them all the best. It was a pleasure to fly with an airline that focuses on service, and I hope they expand to long haul destinations soon. Good luck!

Pegasus Airlines has to be one of the most delicious low-cost airlines to fly with. Not only do they offer up to 26 different airline meals that you can pre-order, but they also work with one of the best inflight caterers in the industry Do&Co.

I recently took a flight from Zurich to Istanbul and caught up with the team from Pegasus and Do&Co catering for a behind the scenes look at their operation.

THE FLIGHT

My flight from Zurich to Istanbul was only 2hrs 35mins, I forgot to pre-order a meal, but it wasn’t an issue as you can also buy hot meals during your flight.

If you pre-order, however, you can save 30% on the cost of buying onboard, so I highly recommend this option.

Pegasus has a great buy on board menu, here are a few shots from it.

Pegasus tells me that the most popular hot dishes are the Grilled Meatballs and the Chicken Schnitzel. These meals offer some serious value, especially when you will soon see the quality of the product.

Their buy on board menu also offers:

Five different sandwiches- Turkey, Beef, Feta Cheese, Chicken and Mini.

Thirteen various soft drinks- Coke range, Juices, Water.

Seven alcohol options- Red/White wine, Efes Beer, Absolut Vodka, Chivas and Jack Daniels.

Coffee/Tea from Nescafe.

Eight different snack options- Pringles, croissants, nuts etc.

Five various chocolates- Kit Kat, M&M’s, Toblerone, Milka, Snickers.

Seven more snack options- Noodles, Muesli, Fresh Fruit, Salad and Soup.

THE MEAL AND SERVICE

We took off at 1055, and about 10 minutes later the service commenced. It took the crew about 30 minutes to serve the entire aircraft; this included delivering pre-orders and offering items to purchase from the buy on board carts.

I purchased the Chicken Schnitzel dish (Hello @akinsoul & @starflyergold) it’s quite similar to the Austrian Airlines pre-order schnitzel, just on a slightly smaller scale.  The salad was fresh, the chocolate mousse was amazing, and the schnitzel was delicious. The hint of lemon also adds some zest to the meal.

I also really like the way the mousse and salad were hygienically packaged whole.

THE INFLIGHT KITCHEN TOUR

I stayed in Istanbul for the night, and the following day I met up with the team from Pegasus and their inflight catering team from Do&Co. Around 3000 people a day pre-order a meal on the Pegasus website, these are then made at the Do&Co facility which is 10 minutes away from Istanbul Sabiha Gocken airport. The unit makes around 10,000 meals daily and is only two years old, before it opened meals were prepared over 60km away at Ataturk airport and freighted down.

This has to be the best airline dessert ever! Chocolate mousse, made from scratch. Do&Co is one of the best inflight caterers in the world, they create amazing delicious menus, and everything is generally made from scratch. Not very common in the airline catering industry.

Pegasus is only one of a few airlines to offer a freshly made Sushi meal. You can only order it on flights ex Istanbul; this is because the airline wants to provide the freshest possible sushi. You can guess what was for lunch after the tour, and it was delicious and so fresh.

Here’s the finished product.

Chicken schnitzel being prepared. This was quite interesting to watch, empty traps move along the conveyer belt and then get filled with potatoes, moving further down the conveyer belt the chicken is then added.

Finally, the meals are wrapped and then placed onto these large trays, ready to be distributed to inflight trolleys.

A big thanks to the team from Pegasus and the Do&Co Gourmet Entertainment company for arranging this kitchen tour for me. Keep up the great work!

I love flying with Turkish Airlines, you always know that you will have a tasty, decent and quality inflight meal regardless of which cabin you fly in. I only recently wrote about their inflight meal experience in business and economy class right here. I wasn’t expecting to fly with them so soon, but I ended up flying with them in early December for a trip from Athens to Montreal.

I flew from Athens to Istanbul in economy and Istanbul to Montreal in business class , the best part of my long haul flight was spending time with the inflight chef in the galley. (You can check out the Youtube video right here)

But more about that a little later, aimed with my trusty note pad, timer and eagle eyes I set out to see exactly what services the crew offer on these flights.

First up I visited the Aegean Airlines lounge in the Non-Schengen departure area of Athens Airport. Turkish Airlines does not have a lounge at Athens Airport however their Star Alliance partner lounge was more than adequate. The lounge opened in December 2017  and offered a fantastic Nespresso machine, freshly pressed juice, yoghurt and an assortment of snacks.

Athens to Istanbul was a quick 1-hour hop; the cabin crew completed a service which included this fantastic little picnic offering, and of course you had a choice of drinks also. Tip: Always ask for the Turkish Lemonade!  This meal of fresh olives, cheese, chicken and tomato along with a piece of Almond cake was more than adequate for this flight; it was fresh and delicious. Certainly very decent when compared to what you may receive on similarly timed flights with other European carriers.

After a transit and a visit to the Turkish Airlines lounge in Istanbul (see video below for the experience) it was time to board my flight to Montreal.

There were four crew working in business class and before departure they offered:

A choice of pre-departure drinks included: Berry, Orange or Lemonade, I opted for the Lemonade.

The Inflight Chef then came through to deliver inflight menus to everyone; he then took everyone’s’ meal orders before take off. He took the time to explain each of the meal choices and genuinely wanted people to be happy with their decision.

The flight was scheduled to depart at 1545 local time, with a flight time of about 10 hours, we left just after 1610. Right after take off at 1625 the crew distributed hot towels to everyone.

A breakdown of the drinks list for you:

Champagne Mumm Corfon Rouge.

Rose Saraplar (2017) from the Aegean Region in Turkey.

White Wine Prestige Narince 2016 Turkey, Sarafin Sauvignon Blanc 2017 Turkey, Chablis Domaine Daniel Seguinot 2017 Burgundy France.

Red Wine Sevilen Plato Syrah 2015 Turkey, Suvla Sur 2013 Turkey, Chateau Lamonthe Pontac 2016 France, Bodegas Beronia Crianza 2015 Spain, Bodega Norton Provada 2014 Argentia.

Port Wine (2012) from Portugal.

Whiskey Chivas Regal 12 years, Ballantine’s Blended Scotch 12 years, Glenfiddich Single Malt 15 years and Jim Beam bourbon Black.

Plus Absolut Vodka, Beefeater Gin, Teridag Raki, Grand Marnier, Bakers Field Cream, Sour Cherry Liqueur, Hennessy Cognac, Efes and Carlsberg beers.

On top of that, there was a great selection of non-alcoholic drinks and teas including:

Black Tea, Herbal Tea, Relaxing tea, Digestive Tea, Energy Tea, Detox Tea, Winter Tea, Anti-bloating Tea, Comfort Tea.

Chocolate Milk, Coke, Mineral Water, Ayran, Orange, Tomato, Lemonade.

Instant Coffee, Filter Coffee, Espresso, Cappuccino, Turkish Coffee and Hot Chocolate.

On today’s flight, there will be two meal services, and you can see all the meal options above on the inflight menu. There are eight different entree options and three main meal options to choose from for the first meal service.

After the hot towels were collected the cabin crew took drink orders for the entree service, and then prepared your meal tray with the cloth, and delivered your drink order and some nuts. The chef then offered your amuse bouche.

Once I finished my amuse, the cabin crew cleared everything from my tray. Meal tray set up would be completed again by the crew from the main service trolley.

Ready to start sampling from the entree trolley! This set up was completed at 1710, just one hour after take off. I like the side dish of oil, spices, butter, bread and those cute little Salt and Pepper shakers.

The entree trolley then came through the cabin, and chef asked you what you would like to sample from the entree menu:

Marinated Mediterranean Prawns

Salmon Tartare

Roast Beef Ceasar Salad

Hunters Borek

Carrot Hummus

Stuffed Red Pepper in Olive Oil

Smoked Eggplant Salad

Homemade Yoghurt with Walnut and Fresh Mint

Everything sounded amazing, so I told him that I was happy for him to select them for me, and the entree did not disappoint.

My entree was fresh and prepared with quality ingredients. I couldn’t fault any of these starters; my favourite was the smoked eggplant, it was truly delicious and the smokey flavor really hit the spot.

It was now 1800 and time for the main meals to be served, I opted for the Turkish Manti, it was a dish that so many people recommended I try. However, I also managed to get some photos (and videos) of the other dishes.

The Manti was remarkably good; I am pretty sure that it’s still hand made by the airline’s caterer Do&Co. Manti is a dough based product that is rolled out and filled (in this case) with Beef, boiled and then served with a tomato and yoghurt sauce. It’s a bit like ravioli, but so much better.

To see how it’s made view the video below from the Turkish Airlines Twitter account.

Here is the story of Mantı, the favorite Turkish dish of over 5,000 people who took part in our Twitter survey. #LoungeIstanbul pic.twitter.com/z2VqVswOr7

— Turkish Airlines (@TurkishAirlines) March 11, 2017

Now I didn’t sample this meal; I took a picture of the finished product so you can see it. Beef Teriyaki.

And here’s a look at the Grilled Fillet of Salmon.

I finished my main meal by about 1825 and then it was time for dessert, the dessert service started at 1845.

For dessert I opted for the chocolate mousse, it was very moreish. Other dessert options on the trolley included:

Baklava

Kadayif

Pumpkin Dessert

Apple and Raspberry Strudel

Pistachio Ice Cream

Cheese

I asked for the fruit to try and feel better about myself for eating that chocolate mousse.

At 1915, I retired to bed, the service was complete, and the cabin lights turned off.

Two hours before departure it was time to eat again, the cabin lights were turned up, and everyone offered a hot towel.

This time the service was slightly different, everything was delivered by hand and there were no trolleys in the cabin. The chef came through and delivered my tray of:

Seafood Plate

Fresh Garden Salad

Oven Baked Rice Pudding

But there’s more…

Once I finished my salad and seafood I was offered a choice of:

Pumpkin Garganelli

or

Stuffed Eggplant

I opted for the Eggplant, and it was a great choice indeed.

The entire second service took only 35 minutes for the crew to complete, it was quick but didn’t feel rushed at all.

As always my meal experience on Turkish Airlines was spectacular in business class, and the short economy hop was also pleasing. The airline aims to reflect as much of their culture inflight as possible, and this is undoubtedly the case with the carefully crafted inflight food menu and offerings. The chef adds some inflight flair and fun to the dining experience, and it’s always great to engage with them. I won’t comment on the service I received as the airline knew I was onboard the flight as I required filming permission. However, I can safely say that the other passengers enjoyed themselves, and looked as though they too enjoyed the delicious meals.

I paid for my ticket and received an upgrade to film and create this story.
