VISIT PERTH WINERIES

There are a lot of wineries in Swan Valley, but due to time restrictions, it is wise to do your research beforehand. Coward & Black is famous for its wine and chocolate liquor, then there's also Sandalford with a beautiful cellar door, and a great restaurant.
HOUSE OF HONEY
House of Honey serves delicious honeycomb ice cream, non-alcoholic wine, beauty products, and their renowned mead (honey wine). If you're looking for a souvenir to bring home, definitely stop by the House of Honey.
Grab a Cider Trail map from Swan Valley Visitor Centre

If you end your journey at Swan Valley, unwind and relax at the pool of Novotel Swan Valley Vines Resort. Early check-in at 8AM or late check out at 5PM (available with additional fees).
Your trip will not be complete without a visit to Perth city. Deemed as one of the laid-back and lively towns, it is quite effortless to get around Perth. Uber and taxis are readily available, and there is a free bus service called CAT (Central Area Transit) around the city.

Truffle Kerfuffle is back at Fonty's Pool, Manjimup for the weekend of 21-23 June! If you haven’t heard of the black truffle, it is a gourmet ingredient and utterly delicious. These days, you can find truffle in a range of different dishes from pizza, ice cream, marshmallow and even truffle infused egg.

Did you know that almost 90% of black truffles come from Manjimup? And what better way to indulge in fresh black truffles than going straight to the heart of the Australian truffle country, which is only 3.5 hrs away from Perth.
The Festival Village is at the centre of the Truffle Kerfuffle festival. Tickets to the Festival Village costs $35, and the fee includes a free tote bag, tasting glass, and all weekend access. There will be a lot of free tasting, cooking demos, live music, and activities for children. The Festival Village opens from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

For a heightened truffle experience, consider getting some tickets to the Chef Cabin's experiences and be seated around the table while the Chefs prepare some decadent dishes for you. Some other incredible sounding events are the Magical Manjimup Brunch with Aaron Carr and Mary Street Bakery, a Fervor lunch and masterclass with Paul Iskov, Pete Evans' candlelit long table feast, plus the L'Elegante Tartufo dinner with Santini's Nic Wood and Young George's Melissa Palinkas. There is also a unique truffle hunting experience with local truffle growers.
3. Kids Cooking Classes and Activities
Photo: Jessica Wyld
There will be some hands-on classes and activities where kids can learn the science behind truffle through a microscope, drawing station, and free Winning Appliances Kids Cooking School with Sophie Budd. Parents will be required to attend some classes to accompany the little ones but I think that it will be fun for all ages involved (and full of truffle goodness)!
4. Southern Forests Fresh Produces
Photo: Jessica Wyld
Other than truffles, you can stock up on some fresh farmed and foraged produce. The Southern Forests region produces over 50 different types of fruit, vegetable and nuts as well as milk, beef, marron and a host of other food types. During the Truffle Kerfuffle festival, you will be able to meet with local winemakers, farmers, and Truffier (the term for a person who grows truffle).
5. Truffle Negroni and Truffle Donut
A Walnut and Truffle Negroni will be available at the Campari Bar at the Festival Village. And don't forget to check out the unique Truffle Donut from The Heritage Wine Bar's. This unusual doughnut has truffle infused crème patisserie, Southern Forests honey and Pottinger truffle.
Book a ticket, head down to Manjimup and revel in a weekend-long celebration of black truffles and other fresh seasonal produce.
Twilight Hawkers Market is the biggest outdoor night market in Perth, an event that is not to be missed. It usually runs every Friday night from the end of winter to the start of autumn. Located at Forrest Chase, it’s a great time for family and friends to gather during the balmy night.
Twilight Hawkers Market 2019
TWILIGHT HAWKERS MARKET FOOD
Being a multicultural city, it is very encouraging to see that Twilight Hawkers Market really puts the spotlight on food from different countries. Most of the stalls will have access to an EFT machine, but still prepare some cash just in case they don’t. Here are five options that we really loved during our visit:
A few years ago, I found Suppa Club at a local farmer’s market. Ever since then, I’ve been keeping up with their journey. It was so good to see their stall at the Twilight Hawkers Market. I was torn between having to choose between my usual Pumpkin and Coconut Soup and the delicious Tomato Soup. I opted for the latter, and it was really refreshing. The soup was a bit tangy, which made it perfect for the warm night. You can also get some takeaway soups in a jar that can be easily reheated at home.
CARIOCAS BRAZILIAN BBQ
I am always on a lookout for a Brazilian place that sells feijoada and good churrasco (grilled meat), and because of that I got intrigued by the food selection that Cariocas offers. Hailing all the way from Rio, Cariocas always has a mini Christ the Redeemer figurine at their stall. I was really keen to try one of their dishes after spotting a can of Guarana, a well-loved drink made from the fruit from Amazonian Rainforest.
I ordered a plate of their churrasco that comes with Calabresa (cured spicy sausage), sliced picanha (beef rump cap), garlic bread, and farofa (bacon and roasted cassava flour). If you’re looking for a meaty food intake, don’t miss out in trying the Cariocas. After all, Brazil is famous for its churrasco!
EL ALEMAN LOCO
Papas Locas (GF) is a must try from El Aleman Loco. El Aleman Loco offers a fusion of German and Spanish food. At the helm of El Aleman Loco, there’s Marco, who grew up in Germany and Tenerife before he moved to Perth. Ever since its conception, Marco is constantly doing a lot of research to improve his Papas Locas.
His version of Papas Locas is a combination of seasoned fries, smoked bacon, delicious German sausage, chipotle, and tomato sauce, and lightly seared on top. El Aleman Loco is using local WA beef and pork sausage, natural herbs, and spices. The Gluten Free Papas Locas is a perfect comfort food, and also great for sharing between friends.
SHAKSHUKA MOROCCAN FOOD
Shakshuka Morroccan Food has almost become an institution. They’ve been around since forever, and well known for its hearty shakshuka. In fact, their shakshuka is a great breakfast dish at some local farmer markets as well.
Started in 2012 by Elli and Riki Kaspi, they have been around more than 10 markets in Perth area, offering delicious shakshuka with perfect poached eggs and slow roast tomatoes. There’s always boxes and boxes of eggs available near the big frypan at the stall. The waiting time is not too long, and you’re guaranteed a plate of deliciousness.
LILY PARIS WA
For desserts, we opted for some tartlets from Lily Paris. We got 4 for $12: lemon meringue, nutty, raspberry, and fudge tart. The lemon meringue was delicious, light, and has a bit of zest from it. I spotted rows of perfect looking canele when I was there, but unfortunately I didn’t order any. Canele and palmier are two of my favourite French pastries. Using traditional recipe, Lily Paris wants to bring you a little bite of Paris on your plate.
PARKING & TRANSPORT
There are multiple parking facilities available in Perth CBD. The two closest ones are Myer CPP, which is located on the corner of Barrack and Roe St. Other nearby facilities are CPP and Wilson carpark on Pier St, CPP State Library, and CPP Cultural Centre on Roe St. Remember that you can reserve a bay or book a bay in advance to cut costs on parking fees.
If using public transport, you can easily disembark at Perth Underground or Wellington St Train Station. From there, Forrest Chase is within quick walking distance. The best place to meet up with some friends is right in front of the Visitor Information Booth at Forrest Chase, which is quite unmissable.
There are four more weeks left until the end of Twilight Hawkers Market. If you work in the CBD, it will be a perfect place to grab a bite to eat with some mates, or even to meet up with friends and family. If you don’t come for a visit to experience the taste of food from different countries in one night, and soak in the ambience of the night market. There will be live music available at the market, as well as chairs and places to sit.
2019 is the Year of the Pig based on the traditional Chinese calendar. This is the time where Chinese restaurants around Perth are busy serving some of their best dishes to impress their patrons. Coming from an Indo-Chinese culture, my family wasn’t big on celebrating the Lunar New Year. We also didn’t get any red envelopes (angpao) and could only be jealous listening to the stories of our friends that raked in heaps of money from their family members. That aside, the festive Lunar New Year is a perfect time to EAT!
We have gathered five places to check out during the celebrations below.
Grand Orient, The Melbourne Hotel
Grant Orient is going to be 8 months old in February and they’re still a baby compared to other Chinese restaurants around Perth. However, they always serve delicious and fresh Chinese food with delectable flavour. For Lunar New Year, Grand Orient has prepared an a la carte menu as well as the banquet menu. One of the highlights of our visit was the super delish Prosperity Toss, which will be available until the 14th of February.
You can only get a plate of Prosperity Toss during the Lunar New Year season. It’s a communal dish where everyone gets to mix all of the ingredients together and is usually accompanied with fresh raw fish. Grand Orient’s version came with ginger and fresh salmon. One of the comments that I received on my Instagram photo is that the salmon looks really shiny and fresh.
Hong Kong BBQ, NORTHBRIDGE
Hong Kong BBQ is a legit Chinese restaurant, famous for its roast pork, roast duck, and BBQ pork. There’s also one thing that is super famous at Hong Kong BBQ: the $8 jar of chilli oil. If you’re a fan of their chilli oil, then it’s a must buy when you visit this restaurant. Even grab a couple for a souvenir!
We really love the Coated Crispy King Prawn with Homemade Mayonnaise Sauce. It’s one of their special Chinese New Year dishes. The king prawn was fresh and huge, the crispy crusts on the outside helped to add extra texture to the tasty dish.
BAMBAMBOO, 140 PERTH
Bambamboo is a great place to mingle and meet due to its central location in 140 Perth. It’s a great place to have noodles, BBQ meats, dumplings and dim sums for your lunch break or after work dinner. Orders at Bambamboo can be made using the iPad provided. Customers will receive a text message on their phone once the orders are ready to be picked up at the counter. Each dim sum and dumplings are freshly cooked every day.
Delicious, affordable, and heaps of variety!
At the moment Bambamboo has a great offer of half-price dumplings! Yes, 50% off selected dumplings daily. This offer is available until early March, so get in quick to try delicious China’s greatest hits dishes at Bambamboo.
Apple Daily, Print Hall
Apple Daily is the place to enjoy delicious Chinese dishes designed for sharing between families and friends. For the Lunar New Year celebration, they will have a once-off special Suckling Pig Banquet. You’ll be welcomed with a glass of specially made Glass Jade Dragon cocktail and six different dishes. For $55, it’s a very good option to bring your friends and family and celebrate the Lunar New Year festivities here.
Don’t forget to book a table there on the 5th of February since the place is limited. Check out their extensive menu of other delicious dishes too while you’re there.
SHY JOHN, YAGAN SQUARE
The newest kid on the block, Shy John, will offer an extravagant Oink Oink Banquet starting on the 4th of February. Since Lunar New Year falls on the 5th of February, you can start the celebration early by booking a table of 6 or 10 at Shy John. Pricing starts from $388 for 6 people or $688 for 10 people. Their special menu will be available for 16 days, until the 19th of February.

While you’re there, order some craft beers to enjoy with your delicious Lunar New Year celebration dishes! Let the swine & dine begin at Shy John!
Hope you guys enjoy reading the recommendation for Lunar New Year celebration in Perth. It’s a great excuse to go out and enjoy various different dishes than the usual sweet and sour pork, or vegetables in oyster sauce ;-). Lunar New Year is a great festive celebration to have after the Christmas season. Definitely plan ahead and enjoy it with a group of people!
Enjoy the festive event in the city this Holiday season and enjoy the beautiful Christmas lights around the city area. There will be Christmas activities for kids, a special one day Christmas parade, Christmas lights projection and trail, and for all the foodies: the much anticipated Twilight Hawkers Market. Find your Christmas Lights Trail map here!
Here's a list of some of the activities that I want to check out this year:
Save the Date to see Christmas Nativity
Can’t wait to visit and see! Thank you Jessica Wyld for this amazing image :-D
With live animals, beautifully sung Christmas Carols and more than a hundred performers, the Supreme Court Gardens will be the place to be between the 19th until the 21st of December. The Christmas Nativity story will be performed from 6:30 to 10 PM. Yes, it's FREE! Last year it was really amazing to see the park filled with families. Listening to the Christmas Carols together with a lot of people really gave me a magical feeling.
RAC Christmas Pageant
RAC Christmas Pageant is on the 1st of December!
In true Perth tradition, keeping the Christmas magic going, the RAC Christmas Pageant is back on Saturday the 1st of December at 7:30 PM at St Georges Trc. Public transport might be a better idea to avoid the nightmare of trying to find parking. Better get to the city early, just in time for the 46th RAC Christmas Pageant!
Christmas Lights Trails
We don't have snowflakes in Perth, but the beautiful Christmas light trails carry with it a beautiful Christmas vibe. The lights trail will be available from Friday the 16th of November to the 24th of December from 6 PM onwards. If you click here, you can decide where you want to start the journey from. You might want to begin from Santa's Magical Castle at James Street Mall, Santa Train at Yagan Square, or at 140 William where they will showcase Jingle All the Way interactive stepping stones!
Christmas Lights Projection
This is one of my favourite activities last year. This year, the lively Christmas Lights Projection will still take place at St George's Cathedral! Don't miss out on it, it will be available from 7:30 PM to midnight. From here, you can quickly check the Council House across the road and see a group of giant illuminated kangaroos!
Christmas Food Offer
Twilight Hawkers Market - 35 stalls to visit!
Check back with the Visit Perth website to see some special food offers from various different restaurants that will be provided this year. Fraser Suites will have Pampelle Ruby Rose Christmas Cocktail for $20 for two people, and the Stables Bar will offer $50 Christmas Spritz and Charcuterie for two. I was informed that most Christmas offers are under $30! How exciting! Also, don't forget to check out the Twilight Hawkers Market in between your Christmas shopping.
Don't forget to upload your photos while enjoying Christmas in the city and use the hashtag #thecityatchristmas for an opportunity to go into the draw and win the Australia Day staycation with Crowne Plaza. Terms and conditions can be found here, and please make your social media accounts (FB/IG) public for your photo to be valid. Now, it’s time to gather some friends and plan a trip to the city together!
I got really excited when I heard that Tim Ho Wan is opening a restaurant in Perth. I had good experiences at other Tim Ho Wan in different country and interstate. My favourite dish at Tim Ho Wan was the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork.
During the launch, we were able to order any dish to our heart content. The people that we shared the table with decided that we had to order everything on the menu. So we did. We even competed with the table next to us to see who could order more dishes! Tim Ho Wan Perth has a small menu when compared to other branches.
The Baked Bun with BBQ Pork lived up to the expectation. Sadly Tim Ho Wan Perth still doesn't offer takeaway service for the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork. If not I will definitely get it whenever I visit Raine Square for a movie!
Other than the Baked Bun with BBQ Pork, I also enjoyed their wonton noodle. I'd love for the Vermicelli Roll (Cheung Fun) to have more sauce. Three times I went there, and all those times I asked the staff for extra sauce for multiple vermicelli roll dishes that we ordered. I also like the spinach dumpling with shrimp, compared to their shumai.
I went back twice to Tim Ho Wan after their launch night. Did it live up to expectation? Unfortunately, I still stand on my opinion that there are better dim sum places in Perth when compared to Tim Ho Wan. On another note, Tim Ho Wan offers a central dim-sum place for people who go to Perth city. It's also easily accessible by public transport. The simple menu is also useful for a dim-sum beginner to test and try out.
Three times I visited La Scarpetta at Margaret River, and three times they fed me delicious Italian food. The trattoria has a warm atmosphere, and I always enjoyed my time there. It's a perfect spot to have a sip of wine and limoncello to finish your meal with.
The first time I visited La Scarpetta was when I had a girl trip with my best friend to Margaret River. The last time was this year. Somehow I always visited the restaurant in the winter time. I usually ordered a different dish to have at the restaurant. My goal is to try all of their pasta dishes that already sound so yum from the menu.
The owner of La Scarpetta works at Xanadu Winery on the weekend. The reason was simple: he loves wine, and he loves Xanadu range of wines. I was surprised when I met him during the wine tasting at Xanadu. The trattoria is one of the much-loved restaurants in Margaret River. A lot of locals visited this place as well.
I like La Scarpetta's Linguini al Cartoccio that is served in a paper bag. It's oven baked linquini with prawns, clams, zucchini, and white wine. The portion is huge, and you can take it away for the next day.
Zampone is a very hearty dish
La Trattoria Zampone - perfect for sharing!
During my last visit to Margaret River, Sharon and I got to try their Zampone. Zampone is a traditional New Year's Eve dish of slow-boiled pigs trotter, stuffed with Italian sausage, pancetta, and vegetables. It was served on a bed of braised lentils and pancetta. We were told that lentils symbolise money or fortune, and pork trotters symbolise luck.
I think it's now a tradition to visit La Scarpetta whenever a trip to Margaret River comes up. La Scarpetta is located at the town of Margaret River, and there is plenty of street parking available. If you're not sure what wine to order with your meal, the staff are helpful and able to suggest some wines with a different price point.
When Twisted Chopsticks came up with a new vegan menu, I was so excited. Even though I’m a meat eater, it’s quite refreshing to have vegan meals once in a while. Twisted Chopsticks is specialising in Modern Korean cuisine, and the Chef always put an effort to prepare fresh produce and house-made sauce. According to my past experience at the Twisted Chopsticks, I had an expectation that their vegan menu will be delicious as well.
The first thing that Andrew, Shannon, and I tried was the Twisted Salad Tacos with Jackfruit filling. It was delicious, and the texture of jackfruit made us feel like we were eating pulled meat. It has tanginess from the mustard coleslaw, which makes it quite refreshing.
Shannon is not a big fan of tofu. When she tried the Tofu Bao, she was enjoying it, and if left to it she'd probably finish the whole thing. The bao was fluffy, and tofu has enough crunchiness on the outside.
The third vegan item that we tried was Stir-Fried Tofu and Falafel in the sweet and spicy sauce. I love how this dish came with cut up apples as well. Apple really gives crunchy texture and fresh injection into any meal. All of us really enjoyed this dish.
So pretty and delicious!
Andrew was looking forward to his non-vegan meals. He ordered the spiciest dish on the menu and his all-time favourite kimchi pancake. The kimchi pancake was different from what we usually ordered at other Korean restaurants. Their version was crunchier, and it was so yum!
The Twisted Fire Chicken was super spicy, no kidding! Twisted Chopsticks had a lot of full tables when we were there. This dish caught customers by surprise and sent them into coughing fits. The Chef mixed different peppers and chillies together to get the tasty spicy sauce.
We enjoyed our dinner at Twisted Chopsticks. Twisted Chopsticks has a big menu, so next time we're thinking of trying their 'Feed Me' option instead ;-).
Jamie’s Italian was founded by Jamie Oliver and his Italian mentor, chef Gennaro Contaldo, in Oxford, 2008. Since then it has grown to more than 60 restaurants worldwide, with plans for even more in towns, cities and countries around the world.
For me, Jamie's Italian is all about serving delicious and fresh antipasti produce, nibbles, hearty pasta, and also great Affogato. I was so happy when I spotted the 'Feed Me' offer on the table. For $60, Hubby and I got an antipasto plank, mini bruschetta, 1 side, 3 bowls of pasta, 1 pizza, and a glass of free wine or beer. Hubby opted for his favourite Lemon Lime and Bitters though.
Fresh and colourful!
The staff warned us that the antipasto plank would be different to the one mentioned in the menu. It'd be a mini version but packed with fresh cold meats and other deliciousness. I must say that it was an excellent start for dinner.
The most exciting part was when the three bowls of pasta came our way. I love my pasta so much! Each dish had al-dente pasta, cooked in a delicious sauce, and we just couldn't stop eating. I love how Jamie's Italian staff were trained to know the origin of each dish and the story behind it.
That pour ;-)
We finished our dinner with a glass of refreshing Affogato. I could easily order for another one! I remembered ordering the same thing November last year, and the Affogato was still as good as I remembered it to be!
It's good to see different age groups dined at Jamie's Italian, from university students, family, couple, and even a solo diner. Definitely put Jamie's Italian in your mind if you're planning for a massive group catch-up or family get-together because they have space for it.
Baker et Chef is a restaurant that’s located at the corner of Mill Point Road and Banksia Trc. There are limited parking spots available on the street, but they also have undercover parking behind the restaurant.
I’m liking the display, Baker et Chef!
In the morning there are a lot of freshly made loaves available in creative combination, such as olive and walnut, or apricot, rosemary and poppyseed. Their sourdough is different from what I expected, because of the hard crust. I was informed later on that it's following European style of bread with its crunchy crust and chewy interior.
BREAKFAST AT BAKER ET CHEF:
Shannon and I ordered Grilled Meat Kabobs from Baker et Chef's weekly special menu. I was so impressed with the presentation. The rice cake was topped with kimchi, enveloped with pork and beef mince, and served slaw in spicy red pepper and sesame dressing. The taste was remarkable because you get to taste the sour, spicy, as well as salty flavour at the same time.
I need to go back and order this again!
That braised Shimeji is super delicious!
We chose Mushrooms 4 Ways and Eggs Benedict for our meal. Mushrooms 4 Ways is so delish and will be perfect for all mushroom lovers. The dish combines delicious tempura fried Enoki, 3-hr long braised Shimeji, grilled Shiitake, sauteed button mushrooms with baby spinach, and sous-vide egg. There's a slice of Baker's bread accompanying all mushrooms.
The special ingredient in the Eggs Benedict is the house-cured and house-smoked whiskey salmon. The salmon was smoked with wood chips in the kitchen, and I applauded the effort of Mr Chef for doing so.
It wouldn't be right to leave Baker et Chef without trying their desserts. Ms Baker was working in France for 2 years, and her desserts look so beautiful. Each dessert was named after Baker et Chef's staff members. The colour and ingredients were made to match their personality too.
I don't have a sweet tooth, and I usually avoid dessert if I can. I told Mr Chef about my difficulty in choosing the dessert. He suggested Shine, which is a combination of white and milk chocolate, Earl Grey, and passionfruit. Another one that he suggested was Calvin. Calvin is a combination of basil, yuzu, raspberry, and meringue. Both were perfect for me! Calvin and Shine are light and refreshing to have after our breakfast.
Ms Baker prepared a box filled with one Kouign-Amann, one almond croissant, and one strawberry croissant to be enjoyed later on. I can tell you that each was really delicious, especially the strawberry croissant with strawberry filling. That one was definitely refreshing.
Baker et Chef opened in April 2018
Breakfast service is available from 8 AM to 2:30 PM, while lunch dishes will only be available from 11:30 AM. The staff told me that Soft Shell Crab Burger is among customers favourite. Maybe next time I will go and try it! :-D Don't miss out on Baker et Chef if you like delicious savoury food and great desserts.
