Avoid Spidermites forever!

They are tiny and will kill your indoor crops if not noticed in good time....yes it's the dreaded Spidermite - every hydroponic indoor growers nightmare! The adult spidermites will live up to one month laying several hundred eggs - so these are a pest you really do not want near your plants.

Spidermites regardless of age will cause extensive damage to your crops, despite been only 0.5mm in size. It takes around only 5 days for spidermites to evolve from eggs to adults when provided temps of 80˚F. Today I am going run over the basics of how to avoid getting spidermite in your hydroponic garden.

Spidermites suck!

If you haven't had the personal experience and wondered how these dreadful tiny pests can ruin crops - it is due to them constantly sucking the sap from the plants leaves, which interferes and eventually stops the plant naturally regulating its water retention and transpiration. Your plant will begin to develop mottled and or yellow speckles on it's leaves as it struggles to survive..

This may be your first indication of spidermite in your growing area, they will begin on the underside of the plant leafs working around to the top of the leaf surface constantly draining the plant in the process.

Did you miss the first signs then don't worry because as the spidermites increase in population they will create networks of webs which they use to travel branch to branch. Leave this unaddressed all plant leaves will be brown or yellow and then the plant will die - as it will have no longer have the ability to create it's own food.

Think you have Spidermites?

An easy way to check is to simply hold a white piece of paper under your plants leaves and give the branch a shake or tap...this will cause any spidermites leaving on the leaves undersides to fall of and be visible on the white background immediately. They could appear as black specs or amber coloured dots - you won't miss them on white paper!

Biological or Chemical Spidermite Eradication?

So now you know you have spidermite - depending on their development stage and your plants stage - it's time to decide how you are going to eradicate them from your plants and indoor growing area. As spidermite are not true insects, but in fact they are arachnids, which means they can only be killed with miticides or formulations designed to interrupt or kill biological activities of ticks or spiders.

The manner on which you approach the spider mite infestation will be dependant on what stage of development your plants and of course personal preference. Many treatments can be applied up until harvest and others can only be used in vegetative periods - always check the product's instructions for correct use.

The other popular option for a spidermite infestation - is biological pest control, using natural predators such as Spical Plus Spidermite Predators which will allow you address the problem natures way, once the Spidermite Predators are free on your infected plant(s) they will target and eliminate, visit our Pest Control section of our website for more information on Spidermite products for prevention & cure.

So how did you get Spidermites?

Either you are growing your crops in dessert like conditions (which spidermites love) or you have transferred them in to your growing area via cuttings or even your clothing.

If you are growing in dessert conditions then things are way too dry, and you will need to add humidification to the grow area visit our Humidity Control section to see a full range of humidification control options and previous blog posts.

Moving forward when accepting cuttings consider creating a quarantine area for them and spray them with Spidermite SMC+ 750ml Spray - just to be 100% they are spidermite free.

My final tip would be to change your clothing or have specific clothes for your grow area only. Start to think twice....e.g don't pop into your grow area after cutting the lawn, doing any other outside work or even playing with the cat or dog - these are simple way to transfer what you don't want in your growing area!

Conclusion

Once your harvest is complete (i hope you managed to saved it) ...you will need to disinfect all areas of the grow area walls, floor, ceilings, growing containers - everything needs to be super clean and growing environment temperature and humidity in check - plus remember how you may have got them last time - else it will be déjà vu...

Do you have any tips for avoiding Spidermite - let me know in the comment section below?

How to reap big yields every harvest

So we all strive for big yields when it come to our indoor gardens. Hydroponic indoor gardening allows us to grow fruits, vegetable and plants all year round - with success, if we can provide the ideal growing environment.

There are many variables that will impact on the success of your indoor growing experience. Following the below fundamentals will certainly put you on the right track for success regardless of your experience.

All plants thieve in nature - growing to their full potential - with the Sun, ample room for roots, plus balances of wind and rain. When growing indoors we must strive to emulate these conditions - to bring you success.

The debate will always be running ..Hydroponics vs traditional outdoor Soil grown produce - in regards to quality and flavor, but the advantage for the hydroponic indoor grower is that you can provide the ideal if not perfect conditions for our plants - avoiding extremely cold temps or excessive heat plus control the humidity levels within our grow tent or grow room.

Maintaining a temperature between 70 to 80°F and humidity between 40 to 60% -  is not an expensive exercise when tackled correctly using the right tools either a Digital Combo Hygrometer with Probe or an AirComfort Wireless Temperature Humidity Sensor. These tools will provide you with temperatures, humidity levels and more - assisting you to dial into the growing area conditions and perfect them.

Let there be light...

With out grow lights you won't be growing much indoors, however hydroponic grow lighting systems has come a very long way in both technology and affordability. There is a light to fit any grow space available, so its just a case of selecting the right light for your space. Remember you are providing the light to your crops - so aim to provide the best Spectrum you can afford and the more light the bigger your harvest!

Why not check out our extensive grow lights range, we have over fifteen of the latest grow lights ready to demonstrate in store so you can see them in action!

Move that air!

Moving out the warm, smelly and used up air in the grow room is vital if you intend to reap rewards at harvest time.

Air movement is vital at all times and can be managed easily using Oscillating Fans, to create a steady breeze over your plants will strengthen your plants plus move any stale air around. Your extraction fan needs to be located at the top of your grow tent or grow room where it can then pull air through the Carbon filter before expelling it from the grow space.

The aim of the game is to pull more out than in - to create negative pressure, which will then provide fresh C02 without letting any smells escape.

Hydroponic growing tips

Just some handy basic tips to assist you in reaping that bumper harvest!

  • Always leave tap water 24 hours before using to ensure the dissipation of chlorine
  • Move your plants around if in pots - to ensure light gets to all areas of your plants
  • A larger container will provide ample space for plant roots to develop
  • Provide ample support for plant branches (stakes or netting) early and avoid any disasters later
  • Consider a Cool tube - which will allow you to remove heat generated from HPS Lamps
  • Ensure you use a pH pen & EC Truncheon to know what strength nutrients you are feeding your plants

Conclusion

The investment you make on the tools required is down to yourself - but without them - you are purely waiting on your crops to show issues of ill health - implementing the basics above ensures - prevention is better than cure. You will not have to find out then - the detrimental effects of predators or powder mildew - as you are not - providing the environmental conditions they develop & manifest in quickly.

So that's just the basics on perfecting your hydroponic growing conditions to benefit your crops - but have i missed anything  - then let me know in the comments.....?

Here are some previous blog posts that will assist you in providing the perfect growing environment:

If you love simplicity and large yields then any of our Hydroponic Systems will deliver - regardless of your experience. With the correct tools your indoor gardening experience will be nothing but successful.

As I say in so many post doing your own personal research - from reputable sources is the key, today I take a brief look at three long standing popular hydroponic systems that we've been selling over the years and customers - love their results.....visit our hydroponic systems to see our full extensive range.

What are the best hydroponic systems?

As with our nutrients - we only sell the best products available - and it's the same with our hydroponic growing systems. With over 15 years in the hydroponic industry, staff are ready to help you choose the right system for your needs and requirements.

To get the most success from any growing system - you will need to ensure the growing environment is correct. Reading my previous post's : The Importance of VPD and The Importance of EC in Hydroponics - will soon bring you up to speed quickly. You find links in these post's to the vital tools you will need to bring you success in your indoor garden as well as the specific temperature and humidity ranges you should be aiming for.

1. Wilma Systems

Super versatile Wilma Systems offers you the choice to grow in soil, coco or can be setup as a drip and drain hydroponic system utilizing clay pebbles. This system is very easy to use - apart from maintaining your reservoir (pH,EC and water levels) - the Wilma system will do the rest, drip feeding your favorite plants little but often - set via a timer at intervals according to stage of growth. Available in Pot Sizes from 4 pot - 10 and XL, XXL pot sizes - all Wilma Systems deliver larger yields with very little effort required for the grower starting at £69.99 - this is the perfect introduction to hydroponic systems.

2. NFT Systems

These systems bring results when ran correctly - and I mean results! From as low as £44.99 you can grow plants to their full potential - quickly, requiring little maintenance and a minimal amount of growing medium.

So how does NFT work  - its simply, your plants are started in rockwool cubes and once roots are present they are transferred to the NFT system which will then hold the cubes in position and provide a constant flow of nutrients and oxygen to the roots below - which will equate to bigger and healthy plants.

You will get all the components required for success in every NFT Kit - which includes a NFT Tray, Nutrient Tank, a Spreader Mat - which ensures the nutrient is evenly spread across the tray to plant roots - and top plate(s) which will hold the cubes in place and reduce algae from light, and of course a water pump and feeding tube to recirculate the nutrients around the roots.

3. AutoPot Systems

With no electrical parts the AutoPot System uses the Aqua Valve System in each individual pot  which controls the flow of water using gravity pressure from the water tank - shutting off when it reaches its pre-set level of 20mm. It really is that simply - no power - all you need to do is maintain the tank - and select your growing media which can be soil, coco or hydroponic substrates.

Each of your plants will get a consistent steady feed – promoting constant plant growth and development throughout their entire life cycle. Available in a 4 XL Pot version - from £129.95 - providing you 4 x 25 litre pots, 47 litre Tank, AquaValves and all tubing required. Affordable and simply to expand the AutoPot System is perfect for anyone not able to make frequent visits to there growing area.

Conclusion

As I always say research and research some more - all growing systems work, just ensure all other variables are within the ranges - do regular maintenance and you will soon reap what you sow :) !

Why you should consider CDM Grow Lighting

CDM (Ceramic Discharge Metal-Halide) or CMH (Ceramic Metal Halide) grow lights are a great benefit to all plants grown indoors, however not everyone is aware of this. Today I take look at why you should consider switching to CDM Lighting or add it to your current setup.

Assisting you producing better tasting products, more aroma and bigger yields by providing your plants the - closer to sunlight - spectrum of light! Plants love the broader more natural spectrum, UVA and UVB wavelengths provided by CDM Grow Lamps. These CDM Lamps should not be overlooked by any means - promoting bigger root development your plants will develop tighter internodes spaces, be bushier with more flower sites ready to delivery a bumper harvest.

Quality over Quantity

If you where thinking of changing or upgrading your grow lighting any time soon - then CDM Grow Lights are a serious consideration, for example to replace a 600w HPS Grow light you would need two 315CDM Lamps. One 315CDM lamp just isn't going to yield the same as the 600w HPS Lamp - but use two CDM Lamps and your going to produce fruits, vegetables and plants that stand out from the crowd - due to that closer to sunlight spectrum.

Conclusion

Hydrohobby hydroponics only stock and sell reputable CDM / CMH Grow Light Kits, the data is out there to prove with no doubt that these are great benefit to all crops and a solid investment - starting from £209.95.

Visit our CDM Grow Lights Range - for more information on our below current CMH Grow Lamp Kits :

Plant Leaf Surface Temperature (LST)

For great results and problem free indoor growing of your favourite crops, monitoring the ambient temperature of your grow room at all times is vital - BUT monitoring the actual Leaf Surface Temperature or LST, will ensure further that you have only healthy plants and larger yields come harvest time!

The number one tool required to assist you in monitoring your grow room ambient temperature is the Digital Combo Hygrometer with Probe. This simply but effective must have tool provides and records the highest and lowest grow room temperatures inside/outside and also the relative humidity. For further analysis of your grow room ambient temperature the AirComfort Wireless Temperature Humidity Sensor will record 100 days of information measuring humidity and temperature at regular intervals, which sent via blue tooth to your mobile phone - plus you can even export the recorded data.

So why bother with plant Leaf Surface Temperature ?

Obtaining the ambient temperature is vital as mention but - this only tells you the statistics for the room or tent - and not the plant. Gathering your plants LST is like having you temperature taken using an under the tongue thermometer - which as we know is the accurate way to obtain our internal body temperature.

Your plants LST will never be equivalent to the grow room environment, this is because leaves can be cooled via evaporation which occurs when the open pores of the leaf (stomata) are warmed up by any source of unused light both artificial and natural.

How do I obtain the Leaf Surface Temperature ?

The GrowGadgets Laser Thermometer - will allow you to monitor your plants LST and ensure you are encouraging photosynthesis. By targeting the Laser beam at canopy leaf level to obtain an accurate temperature reading. Remember the optimal range for photosynthesis to occur is between 15 °C and 30 °C (59 °F to 86 °F) - outside of this range will cause you issues and stress your plants - at some point.

Aiming for a leaf surface temperature between 25 °C and 27 °C - will be ideal for the majority of flowering plants - but this will vary for different plant types and species - therefore you will have to experiment with your plants in your growing environment.

Once you have gauged the best LST for your plants and flowers - you are well and truly dialled in to your plants and their environment and moving forward your yields will be larger and plants will be healthier developing quicker in all stages of growth.

Conclusion

So if your striving for indoor garden success for 2019 and beyond then investing in the above three products - will be the most worthy investments you can make without breaking the bank - not to mention you can eliminate any previous guess work - as you will now have accurate data to work with, which will make it easier to prevent and avoid problems that develop related to temperature - such as the classic - powder mildrew, mold and rot - which no grower wants to have to face....
