How Long Should My Bras Last?
December 20, 2018   Published by Courtney Rappold

Bras aren’t designed to last forever, but there are ways to keep your lingerie looking new for as long as possible. How often you wear your bras and how you care for them play a big role in how long they will last. The quality of the bra and the way it fits will also contribute to its lifespan. A bra with cheap fabrics, stretchy bands, and poorly constructed cups will need to be replaced much sooner than a bra with higher quality material and construction.

How long should my bra last?

When it comes to fit, wearing a bra that’s too small will put stress on the elastic and underwire causing not only damage to the bra but damage to your breast. On the other hand, wearing a bra that’s too big will cause the cups to start gapping and wrinkling. Also, the band won't be able to provide the support you need. So, how long should you keep your bra?

The lifespan of your bra(s) depends on how well you care for them and if you’re in a proper-fitting bra. A rule of thumb here at Hourglass Lingerie is that your everyday bras should NEVER have a birthday! A proper fitting bra should last anywhere from 6 months to a year with regular wear and proper care. Even with proper care, from normal wear and tear the fabric will stretch, and the elastic and underwire will start to break down causing it to lose support over time.

Special occasion bras (Strapless, Bustiers, ect.) on the other hand should last much longer since they typically don't get worn as often. Sports bras, which are typically designed with durability to provide great lift & support will usually last a while as long as you take proper care of them.

How many bras do I need?

The amount of bras you should own will depend on your day to day lifestyle. On average, about 5-7 proper-fitting bras are good to have. This will allow you to rotate in between wears and washes and ensure you get the most use out of each bra, keeping them in good shape for months to come . Quality bras and lingerie can be costly, so if your just starting your collection it's good to start with at least 2-3 every day bras until you've built up your wardrobe. Depending on your lifestyle you might want to invest in at least 2 sports bras, and even a strapless bra too for special occasions or outfits. Of course, you can adjust your essential styles depending on your needs. If working out isn't your thing you might decide to hold off on purchasing a sports bra until you need it and opt for a sexy lingerie set and hosiery instead!

How to Care for my Bras & Lingerie?

Taking care of your lingerie is essential if you want it to stay clean, well fitted and last a long time. Keeping your intimates clean not only allows them to last longer, but also lowers the risk for any infections. When washing your lingerie you wanna keep a few things in mind;

1. It's recommended to hand wash your lingerie versus machine washing. If you opt for machine washing, use a mesh or lingerie bag works best to separate bras from other clothing items to help reduce any damage.

2. Delicate laundry detergents or mild intimate detergent work best.

3. Hang dry your lingerie ALWAYS!!! You never want to machine dry your bras, the heat will break down the elastic in your pieces.

It's recommended to wash your bra every 2-3 wears. And recommended to replace your bras every 6-12 months. Even with proper care and storage of lingerie the elastic will eventually become stretched and need to be replaced.

When storing your bras, especially moulded cup bras you want to stack your         bras one on top of another to help keep their shape. You never want to                       invert one cup into the other, by doing this you could damage the moulding.           For more information on how to properly wash and dry your lingerie check             out our Lingerie Care Guide.

Lingerie Hacks: How to get the most use out of your lingerie!

Any woman will tell you finding the perfect fit is only half the battle when it comes to bras and lingerie. Tricky necklines, snug bands, digging straps, maintaining proper storage and keeping your pieces in good condition are just a few of many problems that we encounter from time to time. Bras don't always have to be a hassle, we gathered a few lingerie hacks that we know and trust will help you get the most use out of your favorite pieces!

1. Use Lingerie bags to wash

One of the most important steps to ensure your lingerie last as long as possible is how there cleaned. Of course, it's best and suggested that you hand wash your delicate pieces, but we don't always have time to do that. Don't worry there are other options! You can actually invest in delicate bags( better known as lingerie bags) that you can put your lingerie in when you wash them. You can buy these lingerie accessories online or get them from some selected stores like Target and Walmart or even your local boutique. Getting this small and simple thing could help you to protect your favorite bras for many months to come. While you can machine wash your lingerie, remember you NEVER wanna machine dry! ALWAYS hang dry your lingerie, the heat from a dryer will break down elastic. For more tips on keeping your lingerie clean and in good condition check out our Lingerie Care guide.

2. Create your own racerback

Racerback bras are essential in every women's lingerie collection. Whether you're wearing a racerback shirt or your just trying to hide your straps for a specific outfit. However, if you’re caught short and don’t have one, there’s a quick and easy lingerie hack that you can try for yourself. Get yourself a clip for your bra. You can use this small accessory to create your own racerback bra look in seconds. All you have to do is fasten the back of your straps together. Keep in mind that you will need to adjust your straps before doing this so that you have extra room to breath and move around comfortably.

3. Get a bra case to MAKE packing easier

Are you planning an vacation or trip? Making sure that you keep your lingerie safe when you pack it can be a hassle. With that in mind, you could get a small bra case to take your favorite pieces with you! Having one of these sturdy cases mean that you can pack your bras away without the worry that they will get damaged during travel. If you have some high-end lingerie pieces, keeping them safe could be one of your main priorities. Thankfully, this couldn’t be a simpler solution !

4. Store your bras with both cups open

Proper storage is key to a long lasting bra. You should never invert one cup into the other, especially in padded and moulded bras. Doing this can destroy the fibers in the molding, making the cups bumpy, and shortening the life of your bra. Instead try stacking them with both cups open. If you don't have the space to do so, another easy hack is to stack them on hangers. See the photos below for example.

Bra shopping involves a lot of trial and error, even if you know your correct bra size. Not every bra you try on in that size will be a proper fit and chances are you will need to try on a bunch of bras until you find "the one". Your "regular bra size" is more of a guide to helping you find the perfect fit.

This is when bra sister sizing comes into play, but what exactly is sister sizing? Sister bra sizing is an alternate bra size with the closest cup volume to your regular bra size in the next band size up or down. For example the same exact cup size is used to make 38B, 36C, 34D, AND 32DD bras, making them all sister sizes!

From time to time, you probably have noticed different brands and styles of bras fit you differently despite having the same cup letter and band number on the tag. Even the fabric type and construction of the bra play a huge role in whether it fits or not. Because every lingerie brand uses their own measuring systems, you may need to size up or down in the band or cup (using sister sizing) to get the right fit.

Every bra size has “Sister Sizes” - an alternate size where the cup volume stays the same even though the band size and cup letter changes. Finding a Sister Size requires one-size shift, in opposite directions, in the number and letter of your current bra size.

How to find my Sister Size?

Calculating your normal bra size can be hassle, luckily finding your sister size (once you know your regular size of course) should be a piece of cake! Thanks to our friends at Parfait Lingerie, here is step by step instructions on how to find your sister sizes!

1. Locate your bra size on the chart.

2. The bra size directly above your bra size is your sister size with a smaller band and bigger cup.

3. The bra size directly below your bra size is your sister size with a bigger band and smaller cup.

For example, if you normally wear a 34D in bras, your sister bra sizes are 32DD and 36C.

Sizing chart is provided by Parfait Lingeire and reflects sizes in UK sizing

When should I use sister sizing?

In most cases, you will use sister sizing when the cups fit well, but the band size of your regular bra size feels too big or too loose. Since the majority of a bra’s support comes from the band – and not the straps and cups like we often like to think, you want a snug and supportive band that stays in place for the best fit. Using your sister sizes can sometimes help to ensure you have a proper fitting band.

Because not every lingerie brand or style fits the same, you might use your sister size when looking for a particular style. Every brand uses its own measuring systems, and even within the same brand, you may find particular styles run smaller or larger. For example, a balconette bra may run small in the cups, while a full cup bra - which generally has more coverage, may run larger in the cups. You might even be surprised to find that some styles fit better in your sister size then your normal bra size.

While sister sizing does open a window of opportunity for more sizes and choices, keep in mind not every bra or style may be compatible with your sister size or body type and that's perfectly normal!  If you need help with finding

the right fit, our expert fit specialists here at Hourglass Lingerie are more than happy to assist! We can determine your bra size and hand pick bras that we think will work best for you – making the bra shopping process a lot less dreadful and a little more enjoyable! You can call or book an appointment online with one of our fit experts today!

As holiday shopping gets into full swing, a lot of us are scrambling for gift ideas. Sure, when it comes to your significant other, you may have toyed with the idea of buying lingerie as a gift, but you might be surprised to hear that lingerie doesn’t just have to be for that special someone. It can be incredibly empowering to swap lingerie gifts with your sisters and closest gal pals, for instance. Mothers often love buying beautiful lingerie pieces for their daughters.

There’s no question, however, that buying lingerie as a gift can feel intimidating. After all, it’s an intimate purchase with so many sizes and varieties. But, with our suggestions, you’ll gift a loved one with a beautiful box of lingerie as quickly and easily as you’d purchase a candle.

Style & Size

Before you go any further in your gift hunt, you’ll want to ensure that you know both her personal style and size. Style is incredibly important as, for example, if she only ever wears cotton briefs, she may not exactly feel comfortable in a satin thong. If you’re her significant other, moving her slightly out of her comfort zone could be fun for both of you, but if you push her too far, she may end up feeling uncomfortable which could ruin the experience all around. Size is important for similar reasons: the better something fits, the more comfortable she’ll feel. The more comfortable she feels, the better the experience will be.

This is why the first thing that you’re going to want to do if you’re thinking of gifting lingerie is to pay close attention. To figure out her style, you need to watch what she wears and when she wears it. Do her bras typically have underwire? What material is the lingerie that she wears the most often? Does she mostly wear cotton? Silk? Leather? Does she mix things up or stick to one or two favorite types? Does she mostly wear black or does she wear a lot of bright colors or patterns? All of these can be important to determining her personal style, including her style beyond underwear.

Once you think you have her style figured out, you’ll need to move on to size. For a significant other, this can be easy enough to figure out just by looking at the sizes of the lingerie already in her drawers. However, you’ll need to ensure that you’re looking at the size of the style that you plan to get for her. If you’re looking at the size of the cotton panties that she wears to lounge around the house on lazy days, instead of the sets that are reserved for date night, you might not be getting the correct size for the set that you’re planning to purchase.

Quality Over Quantity

It might be tempting to simply buy a multi-pack of underwear that you’ve seen her wear, but this really isn’t the way to go. First, these packs are typically not the best quality. Second, lingerie is meant to be a beautiful gift, and that beauty is somewhat lost in a package of basics. It’s kind of like deciding between fast food and a five-star meal. Weeks, months, or years from now, which are you more likely to have enjoyed and remembered?

The higher quality fabric of well-made lingerie will look and feel amazing, as well as last much longer.

Not Shopping for a Significant Other?

Seriously, don’t be shy about chatting with your friends and sisters about lingerie. Maybe consider a gift card so that they can have their own experience, including a bra fitting, something incredibly important, but so often forgotten in the hustle and bustle of life. Also, don’t forget about the man in your life! Men deserve their own confidence-boosting underwear pieces. It often isn’t something they think to buy for themselves.

Still Just Not Sure? Hourglass Lingerie  has a dedicated team of lingerie experts available to help you find the right gift. Come tell us about your loved one and we’ll help you find perfect, stunning pieces of lingerie to really wow them this holiday season. You’ll find us in the warehouse district of Baltimore (look for the blue door!), just a 15-minute drive from the annual German Christmas Village, giving you a full day of exciting holiday shopping for all of the people in your life (and, of course, a little something for yourself, too).

Front closing bras can be a bit of a mystery to shoppers: everyone has seen these styles in shops, but may be unsure of what difference they can make or what they have to offer. Those who give it a try will find that these bras can provide fantastic support. They’re also an important option to those struggling with mobility.

Convenience

The biggest appeal of a front closing bra is that they are much easier to put on. This is great for anyone trying to streamline their daily routine without the discomfort of twisting or having to pull a bra down over your head. (Which if you can do that, it means the bra is too large)  These bras are even better for people with limited mobility who may not be able to reach around to their back. It may seem like a small thing to most people, but being able to dress yourself is fantastic for your sense of independence.

A front closing bra is great for anyone who might struggle with a traditional style. Front closure bras are also an option for nursing moms who need a new bra but don’t want to buy another nursing bra as these remain great options even after you stop nursing.

Comfort

Many women find the hooks at the back of a bra to be uncomfortable, which can lead to a sense of dread. This is often not an issue with the front closure bra. There is nothing to irritate your back now and often the closure is placed in a way that won’t irritate your sternum. Front closing bras also make great sleep bras, as the hooks won’t be pressed into your skin when you lie down. This is awesome for many larger chested women who are uncomfortable sleeping without the physical support of a bra.

Style

Frost closing bras are great for daring styles! Often, the closure is on a very low center panel so it’s no problem if you plan to wear a top or dress with a plunging neckline. Front closure bras also often push the breasts together which can add cleavage if you want to rock a daring look. There’s also the appeal of the smooth back, so your top or dress won’t bulge in that area.

The downside is that these bras often feature less adjustability as they usually only have one closure option instead of a row of hooks to choose from. This can mean that your bra will have a shorter life span as you can’t switch to a new hook as the bra stretches over time. This may mean needing to invest in a few bras or to alternate through different styles.

Front closing bras are great for anyone who is focused on ease of use and comfort. These bras can keep you looking great even when mobility issues are a problem which is great when someone may be struggling with a decrease in their independence. The Parfait Lynn Front Closure style from Hourglass Lingerie is great for anyone looking to try out this style and wanting to feel great doing it. Come see this style and more at our store, behind the blue door!

Halloween is here, and it’s the perfect time to break out your cutest, scariest, and sexiest costumes and Halloween wear. Even if you’re missing out on the Halloween festivities themselves, Autumn is a great time to opt for darker, warmer looks. Tall boots, deep red lipstick, and long jackets are perfect for this time of year — but it’s not just the outer wear that counts. Here are some of our favorite lingerie pieces for women of all sizes that will make you feel so sexy...it’s a little scary.

Elomi Anushka Plunge Bra

Blood red with ornate lace and a sensual plunge, this would easily make for a vampire’s favorite three-section cup bra. It comes with underwire and a firm side frame to push the girls forward and offer you the support you need. A lace center gore with a small bow adds a gentle, elegant touch without taking away from the overall bold look of this bra. Looking to take this Queen of the Night look a step further? Try the Elomi Anushka Babydoll range.

Curvy Kate Jinx Molded Plunge Strappy Bra

For something a little more witchy or trickster-y, consider Curvy Kate’s Jinx bra. The almond brown is far more neutral than that of Elomi Anushka’s bra, but has a mesh overlay that’s perfect for the Halloween or fall season. But the trademark look are the two playful straps that add styling to the bra’s deep plunge. If your costume shows off your cleavage, this could be the perfect bra to complement it.

Goddess Adelaide Black Basque

This is the kind of longline bra Morticia Addams would approve of. It’s completely black, with panels of smooth, silky matt and elegant lace. Lace tops the secure, boned cups as well for added night-like elegance. And with multiway straps and a low back, you can wear it with just about everything. Dress with a difficult back piece? Just adjust the straps or take them off altogether. The firm but comfortable boning of this basque will make sure everything stays up while you have the freedom to adjust your look any way you please.

These are just a few of our current selection that can help you feel confident, sexy, and a little scary this Halloween. For more autumnal or Halloween looks, visit Hourglass Lingerie behind the blue door or check out our online store. And happy Halloween!

You’ve put some research into the styles of bra that best suit your body and your lifestyle. You’ve been professionally fit and can see the difference in both how you look and your comfort. You’ve built up a bra wardrobe that makes sure that you never have to worry about not having the right bra to suit your needs — but how are you supposed to clean your bras after you wear them? It’s easier than you think, but keep in mind that there’s a reason your lingerie is sometimes referred to as your “delicates”.

How Often Should I Wash My Bra?

You don’t need to wash your bra after every wear — doing so can actually damage them and shorten their lifetime. Try washing every three or four wears, although this will depend on your activity level and even the climate you live in. If you wear your bra for a workout or have a particularly hot, sweaty day, you’ll want to wash it. Cycling through a few bras is the best way to protect the elasticity and prolong time between washes, but it’s okay to wear a bra more than one day in a row. Taking it off at night and storing it properly will help it maintain its shape.

Hand Washing

When it comes to washing your bras, hand washing is by far your best bet. Start by filling up a sink with water. Warm or cool water is okay, just avoid hot water as it will damage the bra’s elastic. Mix in a little bit of gentle detergent and swish the water around so some suds appear. You’ll want to wash your bras with like colors- washing your nude everyday bra with the bright red bra you wore for a special occasion can lead to unfortunate surprises. You’ll want to soak your bras for about fifteen minutes or longer if they’re very dirty. This will help dirt and oil break down without damaging the bra. You can gently scrub away any dirt and then it’s time to rinse your bras in cold water until the water runs clear. If you’re washing something that might be particularly dirty — like your sports bra from the gym — you can wash more than once.

Machine Washing

Sometimes we just don’t have time to hand wash our bras but we still have to get them clean: so into the washing machine they go. Luckily, there are a few simple steps that can help make sure your bras make it through the wash in good shape. A mesh garment bag is great for keeping your bras safe from the harsh twisting and warping that can happen in the washing machine. Take care to close the hooks on your bras to protect them and the rest of your clothes from getting snagged. You will want to use cool water and your washing machine’s gentlest cycle while washing bras.

Drying and Storage

Whether you hand wash or machine wash your bras, how you dry them will make the biggest difference in the lifespan of your bras. You do not ever want to put your bras in the dryer- the high heat is terrible for the elastic and the spinning and twisting motions can damage the structure of the bra. Your best bet is to lay the bra flat on a towel, using a second towel to wipe away any excess water. Never wring out or twist the bra to get water out. If you would like to hang your bra up to dry, hang it by the band on hangers with clips. This is better than hanging it by the straps as that can cause them to stretch out of shape over time. When they’re all clean and dry, stack your bras in a drawer, similar to how lingerie stores keep bras. This will make sure they don’t lose their shape.

It’s important to know how to wash your bra, but it’s also important to have a quality bra in the first place. For that, Hourglass Lingerie can help. Come see us behind the blue door today or check out our online store.

As the summer winds down, a whole new kind of travel season is on its way. From fall vacations to the holiday season, many of us will be packing our bags and heading to new places. When it comes to travel, comfort is a must. After all, no one wants to spend hours on a plane or in a car wearing clothes that aren’t comfortable. But, you don’t have to sacrifice fashion for that comfort. Dressing stylishly and comfortably will not only boost your mood on the day of the big trip, but it will also ensure that you’re ready for any road trip stops or post-flight dinners. Plus, rumor has it that arriving well-dressed for your flight just might result in an upgrade. If nothing else, it will certainly result in you feeling ready for adventure.

Here are some essential travel clothes that are just as stylish as they are cozy:

A Comfy Top

Sweatshirts and casual tees are everyone’s go-to choice for travel. You might consider a sweatshirt over a t-shirt, or a t-shirt and jacket or cardigan combo, as dressing in layers will allow you to add and remove clothes based on your environment. Choose a shirt made of breathable material, like cotton, along with a soft and trendy sweatshirt or pullover.

A quick glance at the Neiman Marcus website reveals a variety of oh-so fashionable looks. With sweatshirts from household names like Under Armour, Varley, and even Gucci (yes, Gucci makes sweatshirts!), there’s something for every budget. Who knew your sweatshirt could be runway ready? When it comes to color, don’t forget that black is not only sleek, but it’s also the most forgiving for those accidental drink spills. If cardigans or jackets are more your thing, look for something long that you can settle into on your flight or road trip. You might also want to take advantage of a piece with plenty of pockets!

Chic Bottoms

Forgo the pajama pants in favor of stylish, comfy activewear like our reflective twist leggings by Freya. Activewear is all the rage right now, and these sporty pants are fit for travel with their breathable panels and moisture-absorbing finish. If activewear isn’t your thing, try a pair of loose-fitting jeans or slacks. Palazzo pants are another trendy option.

Simple Shoes

While traveling celebrities often show up at the airport decked out in 4-inch heels, most us would prefer elegant ballet flats or stylish sneakers for our day in the air. The best part about wearing something bulky like sneakers when you travel is that you don’t have to worry about them taking up valuable space in your suitcase. If you’re going to be on a lengthy flight, be sure to pair your chosen shoe with a safety essential: compression socks. These socks are designed to help improve your circulation while you spend so much time in your seat. You can find compression socks in patterns and in solid colors.

Add a Fashion Statement

Complete your travel look with a versatile scarf. You’ll be warm during cold travels, but  when the temperature rises, you can bundle the scarf up to use as a pillow! Choose a scarf in a color or design that makes your outfit pop. For instance, if you’re wearing black activewear, give a bright red scarf a try. These days, some scarves, like this Samantha Brown travel scarf, even have pockets. Besides, there’s just something about a scarf that really ties your whole look together — it’s practical and fashionable.

Don’t Forget About What’s Underneath!

Your lingerie can make or break your comfortable travel outfit. If you’ve chosen to wear activewear, you might consider donning a breathable, supportive sports bra like this air-controlled sports bra by Anita. There’s also this Goddess soft cup, wire-free bra to go under those chic t-shirts. For the bottoms, seek out comfortable cuts like boy shorts, briefs, or hipsters. This classic hipster by Freya is positively divine.  And don’t forget about the Anita Bralette in Lollipop too adorable not to grab as your on the go bra for comfort, and don’t mind the maternity part that just means more comfort for you!

Having trouble deciding on the best lingerie for your trip? Stop into visit our experts  at Hourglass Lingerie. We’ll get you ready for take-off. Just look for the blue door!
