The small white bag, fastened with a brass zip, measured just 12 by 8½ inches. Inside were visible bits of dust. The only hint towards its significance were the words ‘Lunar Sample Return’ printed along the bottom edge.</p> <p>The reason that over 500 collectors, curators, members of the public and even a group of high school students were watching the sale at Sotheby’s New York was because this was the bag that Neil Armstrong used to bring back the first samples of lunar material to Earth. The particles inside were remaining fragments of lunar rock. Forty-eight years to the day since man first landed on the Moon, space enthusiasts and collectors were bidding millions for its dust.</p> <div class="img-container img-container--landscape-thumbnail"><img src="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=620,413&amp;background=white" srcset="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=1880,1252&amp;background=white 1880w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=1456,969&amp;background=white 1456w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=1112,740&amp;background=white 1112w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=940,626&amp;background=white 940w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=728,484&amp;background=white 728w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=556,370&amp;background=white 556w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=355,236&amp;background=white 355w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=340,226&amp;background=white 340w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/Opener-Lunar-Bag-JP-copy-ebc78a1.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=320,213&amp;background=white 320w, " sizes="(min-width: 992px) 940px, (min-width: 768px) 728px, (min-width: 576px) 556px, calc(100vw - 20px)" width="620" height="413" class="wp-image-11963 alignnone size-landscape_thumbnail img-container__image" alt="A bag used by Neil Armstrong to bring lunar samples back to earth" title="A bag used by Neil Armstrong to bring lunar samples back to earth"></div> <div class="caption-hold"> <figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="caption-copy"><i class="icon-arrow icon-camera-circle"></i> This bag, which still contains some traces of Moon dust, was used by Armstrong to bring lunar samples back to Earth. Lost for decades, it was not discovered again until 2003 when it was found in the garage of Max Ary, a rogue curator who managed the Cosmosphere space museum in Kansas. The bag was returned to the US government who mislabelled it as a piece from the 1972 Apollo 17 mission.<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span></p> <p>Bags from Apollo 17 were never used to collect lunar rock and so the bag, when sold by a small auction house on behalf of the US Marshals Service in 2015, went for only $995. (Photo by Jack Taylor/Getty Images)" title="Sotheby&#039;s Unveils Banksy&#039;s Newly Completed Artwork &#039;Love in in the Bin&#039;" /> <p>Controversial street artist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banksy">Banksy</a> has been named the UK’s favourite artist of all time in a poll we conducted in conjunction with YouGov to celebrate the release of our annual <a href="https://www.homesandantiques.com/magazine/homes-antiques-the-art-issue-2019/">Art Issue</a>. The renowned artist took the lead over more traditional artists such as <a href="https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/artists/claude-monet">Claude Monet</a> and <a href="https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/artists/vincent-van-gogh">Vincent Van Gough</a>.</p> <p>The poll, of more than 2,000 UK adults, asked respondents to name their favourite artist of all time. The Top 20 features a range of artists including impressionists, sculptors, masters and painters from the 14th century right up to the modern day.</p> <p>Our Editor, Mel Sherwood, says: “It is both surprising and exciting to see Banksy at the top of this poll. His appearance in the top spot is reflective of the current popularity of street art, which is a burgeoning collecting area. This enigmatic character has done so much to make art accessible – he takes it out of the gallery walls and onto the streets, literally. And with his dark sense of humour and secretive approach, he truly has captured the hearts, minds and gaze of the nation.</p> <p>“It is also pleasing to see so many artistic genres covered in the UK’s top ten. We’ve got Romantics, Surrealists, Renaissance masters and Impressionists as well as street artists – it’s an eclectic mix that reveals how diverse the nation’s cultural interests are. This all-embracing love of art is one of the reasons we compile an Art Issue every year at <em>Homes &amp; Antiques</em>; to celebrate and explore a collecting field that the Great British public clearly adores.”</p> <div class="img-container img-container--landscape-thumbnail"><img src="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=620,413&amp;background=white" srcset="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=1880,1252&amp;background=white 1880w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=1456,969&amp;background=white 1456w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=1112,740&amp;background=white 1112w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=940,626&amp;background=white 940w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=728,484&amp;background=white 728w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=556,370&amp;background=white 556w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=355,236&amp;background=white 355w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=340,226&amp;background=white 340w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/HAM_323-Cover-3aaeff5.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=320,213&amp;background=white 320w, " sizes="(min-width: 992px) 940px, (min-width: 768px) 728px, (min-width: 576px) 556px, calc(100vw - 20px)" width="620" height="413" class="wp-image-11918 alignnone size-landscape_thumbnail img-container__image" alt="Homes &amp; Antiques magazine - The Art Issue 2019" title="Homes &amp; Antiques magazine - The Art Issue 2019"></div> <div class="caption-hold"> <figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="caption-copy"><i class="icon-arrow icon-camera-circle"></i> The Homes &amp; Antiques Art Issue is on sale until 1st August 2019</span></figcaption><span class="im-image-caption"></span> </div> <p>Banksy, the anonymous British street artist, is the only living artist to make the Top 10. But how and why did these evocatively Eastern pieces, with their ovoid forms, high shoulders and delicate detailing, become a staple feature of our traditional interiors scheme? The answer is in the quality…</p> <div class="img-container img-container--landscape-thumbnail"><img src="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/vases_pair-2ce0e96.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=620,413&amp;background=white" srcset="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/vases_pair-2ce0e96.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=940,626&amp;background=white 940w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/vases_pair-2ce0e96.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=728,484&amp;background=white 728w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/vases_pair-2ce0e96.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=556,370&amp;background=white 556w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/vases_pair-2ce0e96.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=355,236&amp;background=white 355w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/vases_pair-2ce0e96.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=340,226&amp;background=white 340w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/vases_pair-2ce0e96.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=320,213&amp;background=white 320w, " sizes="(min-width: 992px) 940px, (min-width: 768px) 728px, (min-width: 576px) 556px, calc(100vw - 20px)" width="620" height="413" class="wp-image-11884 alignnone size-landscape_thumbnail img-container__image" alt="19th century Chinese blue-and-white ginger jars on wood stand" title="19th century Chinese blue-and-white ginger jars on wood stand"></div> <div class="caption-hold"> <figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><span class="caption-copy"><i class="icon-arrow icon-camera-circle"></i> This pair of 19th-century Chinese blue-and-white ginger jars (with original covers) on wood stands costs £3,800 from <a href="http://www.antiques-oriental.co.uk">Kevin Page Oriental Art</a>.</span></figcaption><span class="im-image-caption"></span> </div> <h1>In fine form</h1> <p><b>‘The earliest ginger </b>jars as we know them date from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ming_dynasty">Ming period</a> (1368-1644), and they were made for exporting salt, spices, oil, and so on, to the West,’ says BADA dealer Kevin Page. Through the 18th and 19th centuries, the jars became highly coveted as luxurious accessories for the home, not only for their fine quality, but also their aesthetic appeal. ‘The variety of designs is wide but always very decorative,’ says Kevin. ‘You often see cherry blossoms, as well as figures, landscapes and animals.’</p> <p>With such a range of patterns and colours (there are far more than just the classic blue and white) it’s small wonder porcelain collectors and interiors enthusiasts alike rank these high-shouldered beauties greatly. By the time of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ming_dynasty">Ming dynasty</a>, when ginger jars were rising in popularity, this porcelain hub was producing wares for the government and the imperial household, as well as exporting to Europe on a scale never seen before. I’ve worked for a number of independent businesses, but made a decision back in 2015 to set up my own studio. I think textiles have always been there in the background. I love the organic nature of working as a textile artist.</p> <p><b>Tell us what you make<span class="Apple-converted-space"><br></span></b>Working with unbleached cotton rope is the mainstay of Ruby Cubes. I use it to create 3D objects, such as baskets, bowls, bags and sometimes wall art. I like to make things that are purposeful as well as aesthetically pleasing. The rope I use is wonderfully tactile. This year I’m experimenting with natural dye, testing it on the rope,<br> and also natural fabrics.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p> <div class="img-container img-container--landscape-thumbnail"><img src="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_117-KL-c2f85f3.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=620,413&amp;background=white" srcset="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_117-KL-c2f85f3.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=940,626&amp;background=white 940w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_117-KL-c2f85f3.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=728,484&amp;background=white 728w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_117-KL-c2f85f3.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=556,370&amp;background=white 556w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_117-KL-c2f85f3.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=355,236&amp;background=white 355w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_117-KL-c2f85f3.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=340,226&amp;background=white 340w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_117-KL-c2f85f3.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=320,213&amp;background=white 320w, " sizes="(min-width: 992px) 940px, (min-width: 768px) 728px, (min-width: 576px) 556px, calc(100vw - 20px)" width="620" height="413" class="wp-image-11870 alignnone size-landscape_thumbnail img-container__image" alt="A selection of tools" title="A selection of tools"></div> <p><b>What inspires you?<br></b>I’m hugely inspired by the textures I find in nature – but I tend to apply these in an abstract way. I live in a beautiful part of the world – just inside <a href="https://www.visitdartmoor.co.uk">Dartmoor National Park</a> – so I have landscape to take inspiration from. I’m only a few minutes away from the windswept moors, ancient woodlands and the most breathtaking beaches. I’m also inspired by a lot of ancient art – chiefly basketry. Early examples from Rome, Africa and Australia are beautiful in their own way and an excellent reference. I try to put a modern take on this classic craft.</p> <p><b>Do you take inspiration from other makers?<br></b>Something I’m quite passionate about is exploring my own path as a textile artist and not allowing myself to be swayed by what other people are creating, or be too bothered by trends. For me, personally, my journey as a textile artist is about it being a whole lifestyle.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p> <div class="img-container img-container--landscape-thumbnail"><img src="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_020-KL-3fe7b6a.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=620,413&amp;background=white" srcset="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_020-KL-3fe7b6a.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=940,626&amp;background=white 940w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_020-KL-3fe7b6a.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=728,484&amp;background=white 728w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_020-KL-3fe7b6a.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=556,370&amp;background=white 556w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_020-KL-3fe7b6a.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=355,236&amp;background=white 355w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_020-KL-3fe7b6a.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=340,226&amp;background=white 340w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_020-KL-3fe7b6a.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=320,213&amp;background=white 320w, " sizes="(min-width: 992px) 940px, (min-width: 768px) 728px, (min-width: 576px) 556px, calc(100vw - 20px)" width="620" height="413" class="wp-image-11865 alignnone size-landscape_thumbnail img-container__image" alt="Jessica Geach stitching pieces by machine" title="Jessica stitching pieces by machine"></div> <p><b>What is your making process?<br></b>It always starts with a huge pile of rope on the studio floor, which then has to be measured and organised into the correct lengths for creating whichever product I’m working on that day. Then I wind up plenty of bobbins in the colours I need and get stitching. Most days I sew for about four hours. The most exciting time for me is when there’s a big heap of rope on the floor that I’ve set aside specifically for experimenting and I create just for the sheer pleasure of it. I sketch out the bigger pieces I have in mind, but mostly I tend to visualise a picture that I then try to stitch into being.</p> <p><b>Can you describe your studio for us?<br></b>It’s actually our conservatory at home. My sewing table faces a wall with shelves above that are overflowing with cones of colourful threads. I have to face the wall when I’m sewing so that I don’t get distracted!</p> <div class="img-container img-container--landscape-thumbnail"><img src="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_121-KL-15daf86.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=620,413&amp;background=white" srcset="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_121-KL-15daf86.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=940,626&amp;background=white 940w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_121-KL-15daf86.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=728,484&amp;background=white 728w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_121-KL-15daf86.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=556,370&amp;background=white 556w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_121-KL-15daf86.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=355,236&amp;background=white 355w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_121-KL-15daf86.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=340,226&amp;background=white 340w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/07/ruby_cubes_121-KL-15daf86.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=320,213&amp;background=white 320w, " sizes="(min-width: 992px) 940px, (min-width: 768px) 728px, (min-width: 576px) 556px, calc(100vw - 20px)" width="620" height="413" class="wp-image-11872 alignnone size-landscape_thumbnail img-container__image" alt="Jessica Geach's finished baskets" title="Jessica Geach's finished baskets"></div> <p><b>Any future plans?<br></b>I’m in it for the long haul. Now I’ve found my passion I intend to stick at it for as long as possible. Right now I’m focusing on creating good work and building the business on a solid foundation. My main ambition is to keep to my artisan roots.<span class="Apple-converted-space">   </span></p> <p><i>See more of Jessica’s striking designs at <a href="http://rubycubes.co.uk">rubycubes.co.uk</a></i></p>

It’s set in the countryside right by woodland. Inside I’ve expressed my love of colour so it’s very bright on the inside with lots of modern-country design references – tongue and groove and Victorian encaustic tiles in the hallway.</p> <p><strong>I’ve always been into colour</strong>. But over the years my style has grown and got more mature. I’ve always liked mixing vintage with modern pieces. I don’t think I have a go-to colour because I like every room and project to feel different. But I do like to have an accent of yellow in most of my rooms.</p> <p><strong>When designing a room</strong> I start off by putting a whole scheme and mood board together and I think about how I want the room to feel – what sort of ambience I want to create within a space. Then I’ll put colours and patterns together and play around with those before I go picking paint and flooring.</p> <p><strong>The oldest object in my home</strong> is a Victorian console table that belonged to my grandmother. I really like having elements of antique furniture in my home because my colour schemes and a lot of the pieces I choose are very modern and bright and I feel that mixing them with antiques helps to ground the look and keeps it sophisticated.</p> <p><strong>I collect needlepoint tapestries</strong>. I gave my collection to an upholsterer who patchworked them and covered a bench with them, which is now in my living room. It’s quite a talking point.</p> <p><strong>Lots of people inspire me</strong>. Recently I’v discovered an Australian designer, Anna Spiro, who is great with pattern. Someone recommended her book and said, ‘You like colour and pattern, you should buy this.’ And, wow, I love it.</p> <p><strong>My favourite UK landmark</strong> is Brighton Pavilion because the interior design is completely bonkers and lavish and OTT. I just love the crazy turrets and Indian-style architecture. It’s insane.</p> <p><strong>The interiors shop I couldn’t live without</strong> is Liberty London. I can’t afford anything in there but I just like going there for inspiration. One of my favourite websites is Wallpaper Direct – I think it’s just brilliant. It has loads of designs in one place and a really good search engine. I rely on it heavily for choosing wallpapers.</p> <p><strong>The interiors trend I’m glad to see the back of</strong> is grey. I think it’s a very dead and depressing colour. But all the creams are coming back now. It’s all cyclical.</p> <p><strong>I think Pantone’s colour of the year</strong>, Living Coral, is very warm and enlivening and a happy colour. It is something you can use easily as an accent if you have existing grey or navy or any of those sombre shades. I designed a range of bedlinen with Secret Linen Store last year, including a white linen set with a mini hot coral pom-pom trim around the edge. It’s that little splash of coral that’s more liveable with than using it as a wall colour.</p> <p><strong>While I’m working I love to listen to podcasts</strong>. I like Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes’ The High Low just for an update and a bit of news and culture. I also love Desert Island Discs and Sarah Beeny has a podcast called Round the Houses, which I’ve enjoyed.</p> <p>* <em>Hear more of Sophie’s decorating advice on her podcast, The Great Indoors</em>.</p>

For 100 years it has also been a magnet for artists: Bernard Leach, ‘the father of British studio pottery’, and Shoji Hamada established the Leach Pottery here in 1920, and Barbara Hepworth and her husband Ben Nicholson settled here at the outbreak of the Second World War. Through the 1950s and 1960s, St Ives was a centre for abstract British art. Today, it continues to support a thriving artistic community and is home to the recently revamped and expanded Tate St Ives. Avoid the pitfalls of bringing a car and arrive instead as those first holiday-makers did – by train. All the main lines come into St Erth where you change for the 20-minute branch line journey along cliffs and through dunes, with spectacular views of the sea. It is one of the prettiest train rides in the country and will deposit you at the station at the top of town, rested and raring to go.</p> <h1>What to do:</h1> <div class="listicle"> <span class="listicle__count">1</span> <h3 class="listicle__title heading-3">Day 1: the museums and old town</h3> </div> <p><strong>10:00</strong>: Start at the harbour</p> <p>Begin your day with a leisurely morning stroll around the harbour and shore to get your bearings. There are four lovely beaches encircling the town: Porthminster, the closest to the train station; Harbour Beach, with its fishing boats and lifeboat launch; the small, family-friendly Porthgwidden and west-facing Porthmeor, favoured by surfers. From Smeaton’s Pier, you can watch the fishing boats come in with their morning catch, often followed by a nosy seal or two. Seals and dolphins can be seen in the bay all year round and there are boat trips from the harbour to Seal Island, just a few miles out, where you can watch the residents basking on the rocks.</p> <p><strong>11:00</strong>: Soak up the culture</p> <p>A hop and a skip behind the lifeboat station you’ll find Trewyn Studio, on Barnoon Hill, home to the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden where the artist lived and worked from 1949 until her death in 1975. Preserved much as it was when she lived here, it is a fascinating and atmospheric place to visit and holds the largest collection of her work on permanent display.</p> <p><strong>12:00</strong>: An artistic lunch</p> <p>A five-minute walk away is <a href="https://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-st-ives">Tate St Ives</a>. Winner of the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2018, the newly expanded gallery showcases the work of 20th century artists connected with St Ives, including Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon, Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo and Patrick Heron, along with temporary exhibitions. The exhibits are enhanced by breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean seen through the gallery windows. Make the most of the views by stopping for a spot of lunch at the rooftop cafe.</p> <p><strong>14:00</strong>: Down to Downlong</p> <p>After your morning’s dose of culture, spend an hour or two moseying around the pretty cobbled streets and fishermen’s cottages of the ‘Downlong’ area, just behind Harbour Beach. Starting on Fore Street and spreading away from the sea, the area is packed with shops, boutiques, craft galleries and rest stops, offering all manner of tempting treats. For traditional Italian hot chocolate, try The Pier Coffee Bar on Quay Street, while the <a href="https://www.cornishdeli.com">Cornish Deli</a> has a good choice of sandwiches, local cheeses and home-cured meats. If you want to escape the crowds, head over to <a href="http://olivescafe.co.uk">Olive’s</a> in Island Square, for a delicious Cornish cream tea. Revived by your scone and ready to work off that clotted cream, take a brisk stroll up the hill to the <a href="https://www.leachpottery.com">Leach Pottery</a>, at Higher Stennack. It’s a half-hour walk from the harbour (you can also get a bus or cab there) and the views are fabulous. A place of pilgrimage for ceramics lovers, Leach’s studio was established almost 100 years ago and is still a working pottery. As well as the original kiln and studio, there are exhibitions, pottery demos and workshops, and a well-stocked shop.</p> <p><strong>20:00</strong>: Head for the beach</p> <p>Daylight stretches well into the evening at this time of year, so make the most of the long days and head to Porthmeor Beach for a sundowner. Here, you’ll find the <a href="https://porthmeor-beach.co.uk">Porthmeor Beach Cafe</a>, where you can dine on tapas and seafood or sip a cocktail while watching the sun set over the sea.<br></p> <div class="listicle"> <span class="listicle__count">2</span> <h3 class="listicle__title heading-3">Day 2: West Cornwall tour and the coastal path</h3> </div> <p><strong>10:00</strong>: Catch the bus</p> <p>Spend your second day exploring the fantastic coastal scenery of this part of western Cornwall. The South West Coast Path covers 630 miles of walkable coastline and the stretches around St Ives are some of the most stunning. As you don’t have time to walk all the way to Land’s End, combine a shorter walk with a ride on the open-top bus, run by <a href="https://www.firstgroup.com/cornwall">Kernow</a>. From St Ives, the service heads south along the coast through Zennor, Gurnard’s Head, St Just and Sennen before reaching Land’s End. You can then return by the same route, or hop on another bus down to Porthcurno, home to the famous open-air <a href="https://www.minack.com">Minack Theatre</a>, and back round to St Ives. As this is a jump-on, jump-off service, you can spend as much time as you like at the various stop-offs. For a spot of antiques shopping, head to Chapel Street in Penzance, home to the likes of Daphne’s Antiques, Steckfensters and Chapel Street Arcade, among others.</p> <p><strong>13:00</strong>: Overlooking the sea</p> <p>Whatever your route, be sure to factor in lunch overlooking the sea. <a href="https://www.cheeseoncoast.co.uk">Cheese on Coast</a> in St Ives, will rustle up a cheeseboard or picnic to take away, or for something a bit more substantial, <a href="http://gurnardshead.co.uk">The Gurnard’s Head</a> does great pub lunches and is on the coastal path. From nearby Zennor, (one stop up from Gurnard’s Head on the return leg of the bus route) you can take a bracing four-hour walk along a spectacular rugged stretch of the coastal path back to St Ives. Once there, call into the SILCo. <a href="https://www.stivesliquor.co/index">Searoom Gastrobar</a> for a well-earned St Ives Gin and tonic before heading home.</p> <h1>Where to stay:</h1> <div class="listicle"> <span class="listicle__count">3</span> <h3 class="listicle__title heading-3"> <a href="https://www.harbourhotels.co.uk/st-ives">St Ives Harbour Hotel &amp; Spa</a> £££<br><span style="font-size: 16px">The Terrace, St Ives, Cornwall, TR26 2BN</span> </h3> </div> <p>Two nights for two people in a double room at this luxury spa hotel overlooking Porthminster Beach costs from £499.50.</p> <h1><div class="img-container img-container--landscape-thumbnail"><img src="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/06/Harbour-Hotel-1d86b58.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=620,413&amp;background=white" srcset="https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/06/Harbour-Hotel-1d86b58.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=728,484&amp;background=white 728w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/06/Harbour-Hotel-1d86b58.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=556,370&amp;background=white 556w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/06/Harbour-Hotel-1d86b58.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=355,236&amp;background=white 355w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/06/Harbour-Hotel-1d86b58.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=340,226&amp;background=white 340w, https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/19/2019/06/Harbour-Hotel-1d86b58.jpg?quality=90&amp;lb=320,213&amp;background=white 320w, " sizes="(min-width: 992px) 940px, (min-width: 768px) 728px, (min-width: 576px) 556px, calc(100vw - 20px)" width="620" height="413" class="wp-image-11795 alignnone size-landscape_thumbnail img-container__image" alt="St Ives Harbour Hotel &amp; Spa" title="St Ives Harbour Hotel &amp; Spa"></div></h1> <div class="listicle"> <span class="listicle__count">4</span> <h3 class="listicle__title heading-3"> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Flat3Customhouse/">Flat 3</a> ££<br><span style="font-size: 16px">The Custom House, Skidden Hill, St Ives, Cornwall, TR26 2DU</span> </h3> </div> <p>Two bed self-catering apartment with sea views in the centre of St Ives, £650 per week in summer.
