There was a time when vacuum cleaning was like a big chore that took almost a day or nearly half of it, but not anymore. The vacuum industry is slowly realizing the need for easy to use, handheld vacuums that may not be as powerful as the full-fledged ones but they get the work done reasonably well.

Understanding this concept, Dyson has been one of the pioneers of robotic cordless vacuums that work great for houses that have babies and pets. Today we will review the Dyson V6 Baby + Child Handheld Vacuum (See Amazon for more information), which is one of the several portable vacuums from the Dyson stable.

The handheld series has brought us a plethora of upgrades and options like Baby+Child, Car+Boat, Trigger, Top Dog, and Mattress. Each of these has almost the same features and differ only slightly in terms of the accessories shipped with every model.

Key Features Of The Dyson V6 Baby + Child

The handheld vacuum is small in size and lightweight making it possible for users to clean the house with one hand and hold the baby with the other. It is cordless and ergonomically designed for ease of use.

Powered by Dyson digital motor V6, it is one of the most effective handheld vacuum that can get rid of dust mites (see different ways), fine dirt particles, and pet hair that are not easily visible to the naked eye.

The product features 15 cyclones that are arranged across 2 tiers to work in tandem to increase the pressure and air flow. This makes it possible to capture even the finest dust and dirt in the attached bin.

The wide nozzle is engineered in a fashion to suck up large and small dust particles from the upholstery and cribs to make your home safe and clean for your baby.

It comes with extra Dyson-engineered tools specially designed for pet owners in the package – wide nozzle tool, crevice tool, stubborn dirt brush, combination tool. The tools are light and they can be used for quick cleaning.

The vacuum can deliver 20 minutes of powerful suction with a run-time enhancing trigger, which means that the battery power is only utilized for vacuum cleaning.

The fade-free battery has been re-engineered and customized to give you 1.5 times more power than the previous models.

Power and Performance

If you are planning to purchase this handheld vacuum, I would say that you will be happiest if you have realistic expectations from it. The product may not give you the same results as a full-sized vacuum as it’s considerably less in terms of power. You will need your good old corded vacuum cleaner anyway.

However, the biggest advantage you will receive from using this product is in terms of convenience. As a result, it works perfectly for situations where convenience overrides power. For example, if you need to clean heavy duty carpets, it might not be so effective. But, if you are looking for an easy and portable handheld vacuum cleaner that can suck up dust, pet hair, dirt, crumbs, and leftovers thrown by your kids in the car seats, this Baby+Child vacuum is your thing.

This handheld vacuum can be used on any day for some quick cleaning on the countertops, behind the fridge, staircases, sofa sectionals and so on. The mattress tool comes with a reasonably good cleaning radius, however, we prefer the extension hose and mini motorized tool that is available with Car+Boat.

In terms of battery life, we would have liked the extra 10 minutes that come with the V7, However, the 20 minutes run-time is not that bad for quick cleaning. The battery takes about 3.5 hours to charge and we wish this was slightly shorter as there are many cheap robotic vacuums in the market that only take about 2-3 hours to charge.

Pros

  • The handheld vacuum is so lightweight, you can easily move it around the house. As it is cordless, you can use it in any room for cleaning. No more lugging around with the heavy full-size vacuum every time your child makes a mess or pet creates havoc.
  • The Li-ion ‘fade free’ battery implies that the suction power remains steady throughout the run time. This is a great advantage over cheap vacuum cleaners in the market where the suction loses power as the battery goes down.
  • We appreciate the run-time enhancing trigger, which means that the battery is used only when the device is turned on. If you only use it for 10 minutes and keep it away, you will still have some battery life left in the product. This means you don’t have to charge it often if you only use the device for short clean-ups.
  • The Dyson V6 comes with a washable filter which means you can clean the filter when it gets dirty and reuse, without having to buy a new one. This feature makes the product much more cost effective.
  • This portable cleaning device sucks up almost anything and everything that you want to get rid of. From toddlers mashing up food on the floor to pets that shed hair like crazy, the Dyson handheld vacuum makes cleaning a breeze.
  • Dyson stands behind its products and offers a two-year warranty on the parts and labor. If you have any issues, contact the customer care for replacement or repair.
  • The hygienic emptying bin that comes with the vacuum cleaner operates with the touch of a button comes handy to do the cleaning without any mess. However, be careful to not fill the bin to the close as the dust emanating from it may trigger allergies.

Cons

  • It takes about 3.5 hours to charge completely and a full charge will only last for 20 minutes when used on a regular setting. If used in the maximum setting, it will last only for 6 minutes.
  • The product does not come with a wall mount which may be a letdown for people who wish to hand the vacuum cleaner in the closet or somewhere in the wall. Fortunately, Dyson offers a wall mount that you can buy separately to work with that model.
  • Some users have complained that the Dyson V6 makes a lot of noise during operation, which can be a disadvantage for someone who wishes to do some cleaning while the baby sleeps.
  • The LED light at the back starts flashing after you have used it continuously for 5 minutes but it shuts off after that. The boost mode is most effective but lasts only for 6-minute maximum.

Difference Between Dyson V6 Baby+Child and the V7 Car+Boat

The V7 Car+Boat(see Amazon) is one generation ahead of the V6 Baby+Child, so it goes without saying that the former has many upgraded features that you will not find in the latter. These differences are mostly in terms of the accessories sent with the package and overall performance.

While we are focusing on the Dyson V6 Baby+Child, we thought of bringing to the surface the simple differences to make your buying decision easier. The biggest visible difference is in terms of battery life as you move from 20 minutes to 30 minutes, giving you a clear 50% increase in usability.

The extra 10 minutes in V7 comes handy when you need to clean a minivan or dust the nursery without having to take out the full-sized vacuum. The Car+Boat also comes with a 12-volt car charger that enables you to partially charge the V7 when you are not using it to clean.

Besides the charger and run time upgrade in the V7, the V6 also comes with a larger emptying bin, a.15 gallon tank to hold pet hair, cereal, dirt and other pet and child-related debris. The bigger empty bin and tank add more weight to the V7, making it 3.8 pounds as compared to V6’s 3.4 pounds. The slight change doesn’t make a lot of difference holding it in your hands and ability to clean while carrying a baby or not.

Although Dyson markets the V7 as their strongest handheld vacuum, we feel that the power levels of both the products are almost the same. Both the products have the same maximum air watt rating at 100. The real difference is in the list of accessories offered with both vacuums.

The mattress tool is missing in the V7 but it includes almost all other tools you can find in the V6 plus a mini soft dusting brush, a mini motorized tool, and an extension hose. Another bonus is the quick release connections for all tools that come with V7.

Why Buy The Dyson V6 Baby + Child Handheld Vacuum

If you have trouble makers in the house (both kids and pets) then a Dyson V6 Baby + Child can be a life savior for you. Its ease of use and portability comes handy in situations when you need to clean up quickly but don’t have the time or energy to fish out a full vacuum cleaner.

If you compare the product with other handheld vacuum cleaners by companies like Black n Decker, you will realize that those models don’t even pick half of what you can clean with V6. The powerful suction does not fade with battery life and effectively works at sucking out dust mites, dirt particles, pet hair and so on.

Overall, it is slightly pricier than other handheld devices in the market. But, as they say, you get what you pay for and it turns out to be true in relation to the Dyson V6 Baby+Child

The Ultimate Buying Guide: Best Microfiber Mop Why Do You Need A Microfiber Mop?

Let’s start with understanding why at all you need a microfiber mop. While the traditional cotton mops are the standard cleaning tool used for most janitorial tasks, the ones made of microfiber material have several benefits that make them a better option.

# Delivers a better cleaning performance

The microfiber mops are extremely efficient at cleaning dust than the traditional mops. They can get to the tough-to-clean areas and cervices where a cotton mop cannot think of reaching. With a microfiber mop, you can deep clean like nothing else.

#Reduces time and boosts productivity

Mopping the floors is a time-consuming task but you can speed-up with the help of a microfiber mop. With this cleaning tool, you don’t have to wring out to remove dirty water or dip it in another solution.

The microfiber mops also help users save a lot of time. On average, a traditional mop may take about 40 minutes to clean the floor but a microfiber mop can do it in just 20 minutes. Thus, microfiber mops boost productivity by taking less time to complete a task.

#Fewer Instances Of Worker Injury

The microfiber mops are considerably lighter and they weigh less than the traditional ones. They are also ergonomically designed to comfortably fit into a user’s hands. As they are advanced tools, they are built with user safety in mind. Hence, they are easier and safer to use than traditional mops.

# Less use of water and chemicals

The microfiber mops are built in a way to use 10 to 20 times less water than the traditional cotton mops. As only a few models of microfiber mops use chemicals for cleaning, this greatly helps in reducing the procurement costs and monthly water bills.

# Minimizes the risk of cross-contamination

The health care facilities prefer using microfiber mops in their standard cleaning procedures. They reduce the risk of cross-contamination of diseases between patients. According to some state laws, the cleaning staff in medical facilities must change the cleaning solution after doing each room.

Things To Look For When Buying A Microfiber Mop

As there are different models of microfiber mops available, you need to consider several things when buying one. I have made it easier for you to find the best microfiber mop for your home use. Here are some key aspects to consider:

Type of surface that you will be cleaning:

With a microfiber mop, you can clean two different types of floors – dry floor and wet floor with equal ease.

Dry Floors (for example hardwood flooring)

To remove dust and debris from dry floors, you simply need to brush the area with a microfiber mop. The small-sized fibers are highly effective in picking up the dust particles on the floor. People with hardwood flooring prefer this type of mop as the materials complement each other.

After sweeping all the dust from the floor, you need to replace the pad on the mop head. After shaking off the dust from the mop, rinse it clean with warm water. You may also wash it thoroughly in a washing machine.

For the best results, I always recommend using a dry mop to remove dust, pet hair, and other dry particles before cleaning with a wet mop. This makes cleaning less messy and more efficient.

Wet Floors

When you use water for cleaning, the microfiber mop becomes one of the best cleaning tools you can use for any situation. You simply need to mix water and cleaning solution to get an effective mix that can kill up to 99% of germs, dirt, and dust particles. To use a microfiber mop on the wet floor, you need to follow these steps for cleaning:

First, wet the pad of the mop with water

Remove excess water until the mop pad is adequately damp, not dripping wet

Re-attach this damp pad to the mop head and start cleaning

After you are done, rinse out the mop with warm water or you may even machine washable.

The microfiber mops work great on different types of floors such as marble floors, hardwood floors, linoleum floor, and practically any other surface that you can think of. They are resistant to chemical solutions and also resistant to scratching. Hence, you don’t have to worry about your floor getting damaged.

Size of the room

The type of microfiber mop you buy will also be highly dependent on the size of the room you will be cleaning. For example, to clean a small room you will need a mop that is small enough to reach the corners.

For large sized rooms, you will need a larger mop that can efficiently clean larger surfaces. Although you can clean a large area using a small mop, it will be time-consuming. With a large mop, you can sweep a lot of dust at once in an effective manner.

Type of dirt or dust you will be cleaning

People living in different regions will have diverse cleaning requirements. For example, if you live in a green countryside, your house will have less dust on the floor, however, a city apartment may have floor covered with a thick layer of dust and dirt.

If you clean with traditional mops, some amount of dust remains on the surface. When you want a thorough and deep clean, a quality microfiber mop comes handy as it can remove the dust hidden in the floor.

Always bear in mind that the dry dust and dirt should be removed first before wetting the area. After the floor gets exposed to moisture, the dry soil get stuck to the floor and removing them becomes difficult.

Ease of use

This is another important aspect that you need to consider. Take into account the weight of the mop to determine its maneuverability. If the mop is too heavy, you will have a tough time carrying it in your hands and moving it on the floor. The mop must be lightweight enough so that you can move it around with ease.

Besides the weight, the mop should also come with a swivel head that makes it easier to maneuver on the floor. Also, remember to ensure that the model you choose scores high in terms of moisture management. Check our unbiased review to find this information.

Is the mop head washable?

Most of the mop heads are washable, but you should still take it into account when buying a product. The advantage of getting a washable mop head is that you can manage your cleaning time more efficiently. The maintenance also becomes low in such models. You just need to drop the pad or head in the washing machine to make it squeaky clean. Some mops can be cleaned as much as 100 times.

How To Choose The Best Microfiber Mop For Your Flooring

Hardwood Flooring

Wood flooring, whether laminate or hardwood looks great but requires some maintenance. It should be cleaned with less amount of water because moisture can seep inside the laminate and spoil the flooring. You need to use a dry mop to vacuum clean the dirt and debris.

Once done, dampen the microfiber mop pad with water mixed with a cleaning solution recommended by the manufacturer. Mop the area until the pad has the capacity to soak more dust. When it darkens, rinse with water to get the best quality cleaning.

If you have hardwood flooring, I would recommend buying a microfiber mop head with disposable covers so you can ensure clean floors every time.

Stone flooring

The beauty and elegance of stone flooring are incomparable, however, you need to take good care by using the best microfiber mop. Most importantly, floors made of natural stone should not be cleaned with harsh acid as this can lead to discoloration. Always use natural pH cleansers or you may use plain steam or water.

You must also not use any type of scented products on stone flooring or this may lead to discoloration. There are steam mops available that come with different steam levels to clean the surface with less water.

Best Air Purifier For Small Room: Buying Guide

Not many people are aware that the indoor air they breathe may be more polluted than outside air. As we spend a substantial amount of our time indoors, it’s essential to ensure that we breathe in fresh and germ-free air. However, buying an air purifier is not as easy as said.

When buying an air purifier, you need to consider several things to ensure that the product meets your specific requirements. From the room size and type of filter to the manufacturer’s warranty and availability of parts, every aspect needs your attention.

I have compiled this ultimate guide for you after extensive research to make your task easier. Read the information below to make a wise choice and avoid any impulsive decisions.

Why do you need an air purifier?

This is perhaps the most important question you may need to ask yourself before buying an air purifier. Considering the fact that different models are capable of performing different activities, it is important to first consider your air purifier needs.

If you are looking to improve the quality of air in general, you may consider the models featuring HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters. They are proven to remove 99.97% of airborne allergens as small as 0.3 microns in size.

As one of the most powerful and effective air filters in the market, HEPA can eliminate dust mites (see my previous articles on how to get rid of dust mites), pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and ragweed. However, if you have a specific requirement, then you may want to check out the following aspects:

For allergies: If you or anyone in the family is prone to seasonal allergies, you need to look for an air purifier that offers allergy relief. They usually have multiple layers of filters including the HEPA filters to eliminate the indoor allergens.

For asthma: If you have a respiratory disease, chemical pollutants or odor may trigger the symptoms. Hence, you will need a specific chemical air purifier or asthma air purifier to remove odor and allergens from the air.

For smoke: If you live in a location that has industries releasing huge amounts of smoke or you are allergic to fireplace soot, cigarette smoke, etc, consider getting a special smoke air purifier that can remove the unpleasant odors from the environment.

For pet allergy:

You may love your Toby or Tiger like your child but pet dander can create a lot of nuisance. If you find it difficult to breathe because of the nasty odor in the house, get a special HEPA air purifier to control pet allergy.

For chemical sensitivities:

A newly painted house or repair work may often cause nausea and headaches due to the presence of chemicals in the air you breathe. If you are sensitive to chemicals, consider buying an air purifier that helps you control the multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS).

There are special models of air purifiers made using materials that trap the chemicals and do not release them to the environment.

What size of air purifier is perfect for your needs?

The air purifiers have a certain capacity hence you need to choose the right model that meets your specific requirements. For this, you will need to consider the size of the room (square footage) where you intend to use the purifier.

To do this, multiply the length and width of the area or room where you will be installing the purifier system. With the data available, find an air purifier that can match the square footage area of your room. You can find the specific information under the manufacturer instructions ‘Suggested Room Size’,

If you are looking for a special air purifier to manage asthma or allergies, look for a product that offers air change per hour rate or ACH. It refers to the number of times an air purifier can filter the entire volume of air in a span of one hour.

The specially designed air purifiers can clean the air about four times per hour for asthma and allergy sufferers. Purifying air four times per hour ensures that the product cleanses the air thoroughly and filters out any microscopic allergens that make it difficult to breathe easy.

When looking for an air purifier with ACH, I would recommend that you look for ‘room size for 4 ACH’ specifications. Match the square foot area of your room with the ACH value to determine the effectiveness of the air purifier.

Here’s a standard guideline for choosing the best air purifiers:

Small size air purifiers are designed for bedrooms or small offices up to 299 square feet area

Medium size air purifiers can purify indoor air in a room covering an area of 300 to 699 square feet

Large size air purifiers can remove pollutants and germs in rooms measuring 700 to 1,900 square feet

If you wish to buy a purifier for the entire house, check out the exclusive whole house models.

You can also have a look at my previous article for bigger air purifier reviews

What type of features do I need?

After you have finalized the size and type of air purifier you need, look further for the special features and specifications. Some of the extra features may include handles for convenience, caster wheels, remote controls, digital controls, filter change indicators, multiple fan speed, air quality sensors and so on.

The extra features help in adding more convenience to the overall operation of the purifier. It also gives you more control over the settings and the performance of the product. You may also choose the wi-fi air purifiers that can be controlled via your mobile phone. To save energy, look for air purifiers that come with energy star rating by EPA.

What type of maintenance is needed for the air purifier?

Proper maintenance of your air purifying system is essential to guarantee a long life for your product. If you are using a model that comprises a filter, you must remember to replace the filter at regular intervals as recommended by the manufacturer to maintain a high level of purification.

Whether your air purifier has just one filter or comprises of multiple layers of filters, you will need to change them at different intervals. For example, the HEPA filter may last for one year, the activated carbon filter may last 6 months, and the pre-filter may last for only 3 months.

When you go shopping for an air purifier, you must also take into account the frequency at which you may need to replace the filters and the cost involved. The standard filter life is usually mentioned in the product specifications.

Some simple models may use just one filter so you bear the cost of replacing just one filter. Other models may include multiple filters such as ultraviolet light filters and allergen filters to sanitize the air and kill germs.

Where will you install your air purifier?

This is another important aspect of buying an air purifier. The place you keep the product will have an impact on the overall quality of indoor air in your home or office. Remember that the portable air purifiers are basically designed to purify the air in just one room, so you will need to buy separate units for different rooms.

To ensure portability, you may select a unit that comes with handles or caster wheels for easy portability. This is suitable for small rooms. For bigger homes, you may choose purifiers that can be connected to your HVAC system to sanitize indoor air as you cool or heat your home.

I had recently moved to a newly furnished apartment that had everything except a laundry machine. Tired of the piles of dirty clothes lying around the house and not having enough time to go to the Laundromat, I wondered if it was a good idea to use a dishwasher instead?

Can you wash clothes in a dishwasher? I searched extensively for a convincing answer, and it turned out to be a ‘No.’ Dishwashers and clothes machines are designed differently, and they cannot be swapped to do each other’s job. If at all you put clothes into a dishwasher, you will end up ruining the fabric and color.

If you are okay with your clothes not cleaning properly and you just want the smell removed, this may work in emergencies. However, don’t make this a habit or you may end up damaging your clothes. Some types of fabric may accidentally catch fire during the drying process. Read on to know more.

What Is The Difference Between Dishwasher And Clothes Washer

The main difference lies in the way they operate. In a clothes washer, the contents are agitated back and forth, causing assorted actions such as scraping, scrubbing, torquing, grinding, drying, and other movements. The clothes are soaked well, dirt scrubbed out, and then rinsed and dried.

The dishwasher does not agitate or scrub the clothes. It sprays water on the dirty dishes to remove dried food parties, soapy solution cleans the dishes, and then utensils are rinsed again with water. The water used for cleaning in a dishwasher(click to see my review) can be extremely hot (140–155 degrees) due to an inbuilt heater.

The dishwasher soaps and cleansers also have different characteristics. They are formulated in a way to not create a lot of suds. The clothes detergent, on the other hand, contains brightening and bleaching agents that are not good for cleaning dishes. If you try adding clothes detergent in the dishwasher, you may end up with suds all over the kitchen floor.

Why Should You Not Wash Clothes In Dishwasher?

A dishwasher is not designed to move things around, so the piles of clothes will just sit there and get wet and maybe a little dry in the middle. The soapy solution would just get applied over clothes and then rinsed off without removing any dirt or stains from the fabric.

If small sized clothes blow around as the dishwasher runs, they may get tangled inside and disrupt the cycle. This may lead to a mess and possibly damage the delicate fabric.

The heating chamber in a dishwasher can make the water too hot, more than what you expect to get from a water heater. Dishes made of steel can sustain intense heat, but this can damage the cloth fabrics. Most expensive clothes contain instructions to wash them in cold water.

The drying cycle in a dishwasher also tends to be too hot for the clothes to handle. It can lead to damaging the clothes fabric.

If there are food particles and sludge stuck in the dishwasher, you can end up having them on your clothes. Hot water may also result in bleaching or color bleeding in colorful clothes.

What Other Things Can You Wash In A Dishwasher

I would not recommend you to put clothes in a dishwasher unless you are okay with weakening the fabric or dealing with bleaching/ color bleeding issues. However, the good news is that you can use a dishwasher to clean several other things other than dishes.

Here are some quick tips to help you use the dishwasher to clean other things quickly, while you leave the clothes for the laundry. If you are in a similar situation, I would suggest you do the traditional method of cleaning in a bucket using water and soap.

Potatoes and root vegetables

Harvesting potatoes, turnips, and beets that are grown in your home garden is a matter of pride. However, cleaning the mud and dirt stuck to them is a lot of work. You can cut that short and make it easier by keeping them on the top rack of the dishwasher and running the wash cycle without any soap.

Combs and hairbrushes

No matter how careful you are about removing shed locks from combs and hairbrushes, they can get dirty over some time. They can get covered with a greasy buildup caused by your hair’s natural oils. To clean the bristles, just put the brushes and combs inside the dishwasher rack, and they will come out squeaky clean

Lego toys

Kids are cute, curious, and eager to learn, but they also contaminate disease easily. It just takes one afternoon of play date to contaminate germs from the playmate. You can clean the Lego toys in a dishwasher as the plastic bricks are sturdy enough to sustain hot water. This is an easier way to sanitize toys and keep them clean.

Teethers

Having a baby in the house means a lot of work. Besides taking care of the baby, you need to take precautions to prevent disease. Baby teethers once dropped to the floor can get infected with germs. An easy way to sanitize them is to wash them in a dishwasher. However, don’t toss any teether into the dishwasher. Read the labels to ensure that it is dishwasher-safe.

Waterproof keywords

If you are like me, you probably eat, drink, and spend a lot of time in the workstation. No wonder, it gathers a lot of dirt, debris, spilled drinks, and crumbs. If a spilled soda makes the keys stick, or there are too many black smudges, consider washing the keyboard in a dishwasher. Please remember, this suggestion works only for waterproof keyboards.

Garden Tools

As Spring draws closer, most home gardeners would be looking to bring out their tools and start digging and planting. While the tools with wooden handles need to be soaked to remove the dirt, those with plastic handles can be easily cleaned in a dishwasher. If you prefer this method of cleaning, consider buying dishwasher-safe garden tools.

Small countertop trashcans

The trash cans not only contain garbage but they also carry nasty smells. While the full-size containers may need a thorough wash using the garden hose, you may clean the countertop cans in a dishwasher. A quick spin cannot only leave it squeaky clean but also remove the nasty smells and make it bacteria-free.

Fake flowers

The fake flowers you once admired can look disgusting when covered with dust. Washing them in a clothes washer is not a good idea because spinning and scrubbing motion can cause much harm. However, you can always put them into a dishwasher and spin to make them look like new again. You may also wash soft toys, kitchen brushes, cup holders, baseball caps and so on.

What Items You Should Never Wash In A Dishwasher

Things made of wood: Dishwashing cycle uses hot water to clean, and this can strip the natural oils in the wood. With a lack of proper care, you can soon see the dishes begin to crack and warp.

Thin plastic: Hot water used for cleaning can melt or warp the thin plastic items depending upon the variety of plastic. Hence, you must avoid putting plastic items inside the dishwasher unless it is mentioned dishwasher-safe.

Sharp knives and graters: The intense heat inside the dishwasher can destroy the sharpness of blades. It can also destroy the adhesive on the handles, making them fall apart easily.

Non-stick pots and pans, and also the ones made of cast iron should not be put inside a dishwasher. Hot water can damage the non-stick layer on these utensils.

Can You Wash Clothes Using Dishwashing Soap?

Well, washing clothes in a dishwasher is certainly not a good idea but what about using dishwashing soap instead of laundry detergent. I often use the dishwashing liquid when I run out of laundry detergent but need to wash clothes urgently.

Surprisingly, my observation and other people’s comments suggest that you can save money on laundry detergent by using dishwashing liquid. Just a teaspoon spoon of liquid is enough to clean a small load. You may use 2 teaspoons for medium load and 3 for the heavy load. Avoid adding too much, or you may end up with a lot of suds flowing out of the clothes washer.

I would suggest to not make this as a practice as dishwashing soap is designed to work on hard utensils, not soft fabric. So, using them regularly for washing clothes may damage the delicate clothes.  However, you can use it to clean bed linens, and pillow covers once a week to remove the accumulate grease and skin oils.

Related Questions Can I use body soap to wash clothes?

Yes, you may use body soap to wash clothes, and they will usually do a good job. However, as these soaps are used on the skin, they are gentler than any detergent.   You can soak dirty clothes with a bathing soap solution overnight to remove stains and get fresh smelling clothes.

Is it better to hand wash than putting clothes in a dishwasher

I would say yes in most cases. Clothes are made of delicate fabrics that are not designed to sustain intense heat and treatment with hot water. Furthermore, many expensive clothes come with labels that contain instructions to clean with cold water only.  Hand washing is a safer and better solution alternative.

What are Laundromats?

If you don’t have a clothes washer, look for a Laundromat in your area. These are known as self-cleaning laundry where the clothes are washed, dried, and folded by self. Some centers have staff, and they may offer professional service. You just need to drop in your dirty clothes, and they will clean, dry, and fold for you.

I have often heard people complaining about cleaning bathroom floors using a mop. Some find it time taking and tedious while others say that they end up splashing water and creating a mess. If you have similar feelings, I have some easy alternatives to help you get the work done.

So, how to clean the bathroom floor without a mop? Sprinkle a homemade cleaning solution (vinegar and warm water) on the floor (not in travertine or marble) and wipe using an old towel or microfiber cloth. You may also use lemon juice and wipe the floor with a sponge. However, make sure you don’t use any acidic solutions on the hardwood.

Another option is to use a steam cleaner along with a scrubbing brush to loosen the dirt trapped in the grout lines. Steam can work wonders to remove dirt and germs in a way you can’t expect from your traditional bucket and mop method. However, you must avoid using the steam mop on hardwood and laminate floors.

If you have time constraints or any other issues making it difficult for you to clean the bathroom floor with a mop, you can rely on numerous other ways. Read on to find more ideas on how to clean the bathroom floor to make it look and smell good.

Cleaning Methods Depend On The Type Of Bathroom Floor

The methods used to clean the bathroom floor depends on the type of flooring you have. For example, porcelain and ceramic tiles are easy to maintain and they can handle most of the cleaning agents without losing their shine. On the downside, they hide dirt and germs so you need to use a good scrubber to clean them.

If you have marble or stone floor in the bathroom, it will look breathtaking for sure. However, cleaning the marble or stone tiles may be tricky. You must use a cleaner that has a neutral pH and not any hard substance for scrubbing the floor.

Similarly, if you have resilient tiles made of vinyl, cork, rubber, or linoleum, you can sponge it or towel clean using water and vinegar solution. You must avoid using steam cleaners on these surfaces are they are not built to bear excess heat or cold.

Different Ways To Clean Bathroom Floor Without Mop Use a squeegee and sponge

Vinegar is a safe and natural cleanser that comes handy to get rid of stains and make floor germ free. Make a mix of vinegar and warm water, and use this solution to clean the floor using a sponge. Vinegar is good at removing hard water stains on the floor and gives you a shining surface.

Remember to rinse the floor again with cold water after treating it with vinegar. You may use a squeegee to remove the excess water and then absorb the remaining water with a sponge. You must take care to not use vinegar on hardwood floors as the acid content may ruin the delicate surface.

Old Towel or Rag Cloth

You may use old towels or rags lying unused in the house to give your bathroom tiles a nice cleanup without using a mop. Add a few drops of lemon juice to warm water and sprinkle it on the floor. Now take the old towel and use your feet to clean every corner of the floor.

It is important to not let any water drops sit over the tiles for too long or else it may cause ugly water stains. Alternatively, take a slightly damp towel and spray a good amount of disinfectant on it. Now, use your feet to clean the bathroom floor, and you will benefit both ways because this gives you good exercise too.

Toothbrush and Toothpaste

If the dirt between the bathroom tiles makes you feel embarrassed in front of the guests, it is time to get rid of them. An easy and cost-effective solution is to use an old toothbrush to give the dirty tiles a nice scrub. Apply some toothpaste on the brush and clean the tiles and lines between them thoroughly.

You can then wash the floor using the water hose.  Remove excess water from the floor using a squeegee and then use a towel to absorb out the remaining water. This will also help dry out the surface faster.

Dusting Cloth and Tea Towel

If your bathroom floor is looking dull and stained, here’s a quick way to clean and restore the shine without using a mop. Use a tea towel to first wipe the wet floor and ensure that it’s dry. Now, spray furniture polish on a dusting cloth generously.

Put the cloth on the floor and use the back of the brush on the cloth to polish the floor tiles gently. Take care to not step on the polished floor until it becomes dry.

Using a steam cleaner

Although not a traditional mop, the steam cleaners perform the job of a mop with care and precision. The pressurized water vapor released from the equipment removes grout and cleans the tiles at the same time.

The steam cleaners are safer and cost-effective to use than the floor cleaning products. They are suitable for marble, tile, vinyl, wood, and laminate floors. The sterilizing effect of steam not only cleans the surface but also kills germs and bacteria.

Showerhead or water hose

If there are dust particles in the bathroom, you may also use pressure from the shower head or water hose to clean the bathroom. It’s more convenient than pouring buckets on the floor. Once the dirt is removed and the floor looks cleaner, grab a squeegee and drain excess water from the floor. You may then spray a good disinfectant on the floor and use a towel to wipe it dry. You may use a homemade cleaning solution made of vinegar and warm water. For more effective cleaning, you may add a pinch of baking soda or borax powder.

Six Tools You May Need To Clean Bathroom Without A Mop

If you wish to clean the bathroom floor without using a mop, here are a few tools that can help you. Keeping these tools in the house not only guarantees a clean surface but also comes handy to remove spills on the floor (for example, the shampoo bottle or body oil spilling accidentally).

#1. Microfiber Cloths

A good set of microfiber cloths like this is easily available in any store and you can find them in different colors too. Nothing cleans better than a damp microfiber cloth and they don’t leave behind lint like other clothes. You can use them for the kitchen, bathroom, and other areas of the house.

#2. Spray bottles

The spray bottles are inexpensive and they come handy to use the homemade cleaning solutions. At times, when you are not in the mood for a thorough cleanup, these spray bottles are useful to spray the cleaning solution generously over the floor and wipe using a towel.

Besides a great tool for cleaning floors and tiles, they can also be used to spray on clothes before ironing. Some people use them to train pets to stay away from furniture.

#3. Squeegee with a long handle

A squeegee comes attached with a long extension pole and it can be used to remove excess water after washing the floor with a bucket of water. The squeegees come in different sizes. While the big ones can be used to clean the floor, you may use the smaller ones to clean the mirrors and windows.

#4. White cleaning cloths or paper towels

If you are looking for an alternative to microfiber cloths, the white cleaning cloths work just fine. If you use bleach to remove stains on the floor, you may use the white cotton cloth to wipe the area clean. They have the good absorbent capacity so the floor can dry out really fast.

You may also use paper towels to wipe your bathroom floor clean. These are inexpensive and the paper absorbs the liquid well so that there are no water stains on the floor.

#5. Steam cleaners

The steam cleaners (Click to see my reviews) come with replaceable and washable pads to remove dirt from the lines between the tiles. They do a good job of cleaning different types of bathroom floors. The pads often come with a lingering jasmine or vanilla scent that leaves your bathroom smelling fresh and fragrant all day.

However, you must be careful when using steam cleaners as some types of floors are not designed to take extreme heat or cold. Steam cleaning not only removes dirt and dust from the surface but also makes it germ-free.

#6. Lightweight vacuum cleaner

If your bathroom accumulates a lot of dust, I would recommend using a light vacuum cleaner to remove the dirt before wetting the floor. If there are lines of dust on your bathroom cabinet or clothes holder, cleaning the floor alone won’t make your bathroom look clean. So, a light vacuum is what you need to ensure complete cleanliness.

Related Questions Are environmentally safe cleansers effective?

While some people say that green or environmentally safe cleaners are not potent enough, this is not true. Several hospitals and daycares use green cleansers to sanitize the floor.  Using a disinfectant on your bathroom floor is not optional but a necessity, especially if you have kids at home. Go ahead and choose an eco-friendly cleanser or make your own at home.

How to make an effective floor cleanser at home?

If you have kids at home, I would advise you to keep chemical cleaners releasing toxic fumes away. If you are someone who prefers to make your own homemade cleanser, just add a half cup of white vinegar with one gallon of warm water.

Is vinegar safe to use on all types of the floor?

If your floor is made of sensitive material such as travertine or marble, avoid using vinegar completely. You may replace vinegar with baking soda and soap solution for a more powerful and effective cleaning solution.

Is your toilet brush clean enough? Do you clean it properly after each use? If your answer is a hesitant ‘No’, there is nothing to be ashamed of because you are not alone. I am glad that you are keen to change things and take better care of your bathroom hygiene from now.

So, how do you clean a toilet brush after use? You simply need to mix hot water and bleach to create a cleaning solution. Dip your toilet brush in the solution and let it sit for some time. Then rinse with hot water and let it dry completely before you put it back in the holder.

If you store your cleaned and dried toilet brush back into a dirty brush holder, the entire purpose of cleaning is lost. For total hygiene, you need to also wash the toilet brush holder with disinfectant and hot water. Let it dry completely before you put the brush back into the holder.

Read on to find out the various ways to clean the toilet brush after each use. I have also included tips on how to clean other nasty things in the bathroom.

Why You Must Clean Your Toilet Brush?

The toilet brush comes in contact with a lot of germs when you clean the toilet bowl and the ring. If you keep it back in the holder without cleaning, the brush will not only stink but also become a breeding ground for germs.

For sanitization of the bathroom and good health of your family, you must ensure that you clean your toilet brush thoroughly and let it dry before putting it back in its place. To assist you in this, I have listed 3 tried and tested methods to clean the toilet brush.

3 Different Ways To Clean Toilet Brush After Use
  1. Soaking in Bleach

Take a bucket deep enough to hold enough water to fully submerge the toilet brush inside it. Now, fill the bucket with steaming hot water and two cups of bleach (about 470 ml). Check your bleach bottle to see if it has instructions on how much should be added to water and follow it accordingly.

In case you do not have a bucket accessible, I would suggest that you add bleach directly to the toilet bowl. Submerge the brush into the toilet bowl and let it stay like that for a few hours or overnight.

If you are using a bucket, let the toilet brush and holder soak in the solution for an hour. You must wear gloves to protect your skin and eyes from getting in contact with the bleach.

After one hour, rinse the toilet brush and holder using hot water (use the hottest water that you may have access to). Let the brush and holder stay submerged underwater for at least 30 seconds. Hot water helps in decomposing the active ingredients in the bleach so it’s safer to touch the brush.

Next, place the toilet brush and holder over a towel and let them air dry for a few minutes. When they are completely dry, store them away. Skipping this step and storing a wet and damp brush will only result in bacterial growth.

Repeat this cleaning process at least once every month to keep your toilet clean and sanitized. Even if you don’t use your toilet brush very often, it will still collect germs and dirt, so it’s a good idea to clean at least once every month.

  1. Using A Disinfectant To Clean Toilet Brush

Another method to clean a toilet brush is to spray it with a good quality disinfectant. You can use any disinfectant available in the market. Remember to cover the entire surface when spraying the brush. Keep spraying until the bristles start dripping with the liquid.

Spray the disinfectant in the toilet bowl as well. Now, put the brush handle under the toilet seat and let it stay like that for 10 minutes.  Make sure you position it in a way that the bristles are just above the toilet bowl to allow the excess liquid drip into it.

Alternatively, you may keep the brush to dry over a tub or sink. If you do this, remember to thoroughly clean the sink or tub after that. Anyways, I prefer and also recommend the toilet bowl for less hassle. After the brush is no more dripping, run hot water over it while the brush handle is still under the toilet seat.

Keep pouring hot water until the water running out of the brush runs clear. Now repeat the same process for the holder. First, spray the disinfectant generously into it and allow the solution to sit for at least 10 minutes. Then, run hot water on the holder to clean it completely.

Air-dry the toilet brush and holder by keeping it on a paper towel. When both are completely dry, keep the brush into the holder, and store them.

  1. Using Natural Products To Clean Toilet Brush

If using bleach or chemical disinfectant is not your thing, then you may consider using natural products for safe and eco-friendly cleaning. I suggest using a vinegar and water mix to clean the toilet brush and make it germ-free.

To make the solution, fill a bucket to the half with vinegar and the rest with water. You must ensure that the bucket is deep enough to completely submerge the toilet brush and holder into it. Let them soak in the vinegar-water mix for at least 3-4 hours or overnight is also good.

After the brush and holder are properly soaked, wear gloves and remove them from the solution. Now, sprinkle about 2 grams of baking soda on the brush and scrub it thoroughly. You may use a separate brush to scrub the bristles and in between them thoroughly.

Although you may skip the second step with baking soda, it helps in deep cleaning the brush even further. Now, rinse the toilet brush and holder with steaming hot water for at least 30 seconds to remove the baking soda particles and germs. Keep rinsing until the water running out becomes clear.

Let the brush and holder air-dry in the open. You may use a paper towel to dry them thoroughly. Wait until both the brush and holder become completely dry before storing them away.

Tips To Ensure A Safe And Effective Cleaning

Flush after you clean the toilet bowl and put the brush into the bowl as it fills again with fresh water. This will help in removing any nasty particles or germs lingering in the brush.

To dry the toilet brush quickly, position it in a way to keep the handle between the toilet seat and lid. Let the bristles hang over the bowl and drip slowly to remove all excess water. Then air dry for at least one hour before storing.

Always remember to clean the brush holder and make it germ-free too. Putting back a sanitized brush into a germ-laden holder negates the whole process.

Remember to wear gloves on your hands while cleaning to avoid contacting any germs. This also saves you from skin irritation caused by bleaching agent or other strong disinfectants.

Other Nasty Things In The Bathroom That Needs Cleaning

While the toilet and tools used for cleaning are the first things that come to our mind when we talk about nasty items in the bathroom, there are several others on the list. Read on to find out how to clean them too for a shining and odor-free bathroom.

#1. Toothbrush and holder

It may appear as a small thing but can become the cause for major dental problems if not done properly. Keep your toothbrush clean by rinsing it thoroughly with tap water after each use to prevent any toothpaste build-up.

If you wish to deep clean, soak the toothbrush in a cup of vinegar for at least 30 minutes. You must ensure that the bristles submerge entirely into the solution. Vinegar works as a natural disinfectant to remove any bacterial buildup

You must replace your toothbrush after every 3 to 4 months. If you fall sick, remember to replace it immediately after your recovery from sickness. To clean the toothbrush holder, fill it up with hot water, add some liquid soap, and scrub out the dirt.

#2. Razors

No wonder they are our best friend in keeping us well groomed and presentable, but how often do you worry about cleaning the razors. You will be surprised to see the difference a little razor maintenance can do. They will not only be cleaner but also last longer and protect you against cuts and nicks.

To clean a razor, take a cotton pad and dab some alcohol on it. Now, swipe the blade using this cotton pad to clean any dirt and germ. Rinse it well with hot water and store in a dry place such as the countertop.

#3. Loofah

Ah! Loofahs are a favorite bathroom product because they are so good as scrubbing out the dirt and dead skins from your body. But, how often do you think about cleaning them? Pumice stone gets clogged with germs and dead skin cells over time and it can become a breeding ground for germs.

You can clean it in a similar way as the toothbrush using white vinegar. Pour some white vinegar and hot water (50/50) in a bowl and submerge the stone into the water completely. Let it sit for at least an hour. Hang the loofah to let it dry completely before using.

#4. Plunger

This is another inevitable item in the bathroom, used for clearing up the clogs. While they definitely do a great job, without which your life would be hell – how often do you take care of them? Like everything else in the bathroom, the plunger also needs to be cleaned and sanitized.

To clean a plunger, you simply need to spray a disinfectant on it. Let it stand for about 10 minutes and then air dry. Some plungers also come with a holder so remember to clean it too.

Related Questions How often should you replace toilet brush

As toilet brushes are used to clean the nastiest things imaginable, I recommend changing them at least once every six months. Cleaning frequently can help extend their life and improve hygiene.

Can you recycle toilet brushes?

Yes, just like other bathroom products like shampoo bottles, soap dispensers, and toilet roll inserts, you can also recycle a toilet brush. Contact your local municipality to find out more before disposing of the brush. You can make a wise choice by buying recyclable products to save energy and the planet.

If you have been stacking up plates, forks, and spoons inside the dishwasher for long, you will soon be haunted by the nasty smell that reminds you it’s time to do the dishes. Thanks to the tiny dishwasher tablets, you no more need to wonder about how much detergent to add.

Can you put dishwasher tablets in the bottom of the dishwasher’? I looked up on the Internet for an answer and found that yes, you certainly may, but experts say it’s not the right method. The dishwashing equipment is designed to do a short pre-rinse with water and then start the long washing cycle.

If you put the tablet at the bottom, it will start dissolving earlier than it is supposed to, resulting in some wastage. When you put the tablet in the dispenser, it’s door remains closed during the pre-wash cycle. As the second long cycle starts, the dispenser door opens and water starts dissolving the tablet.

However, users often face issues with the dispenser door, not opening or the tablet not dissolving completely even after the washing cycle completes. If you are facing similar issues, there’s probably some problem with your washing machine that needs to be fixed.

Why Putting Dishwasher Tablets In Bottom Is Not A Good Idea

The problem with putting the tablet directly in the dishwasher is that the first step of cleaning usually involves rinsing. The dishwasher fills up with water, rinses for a few minutes, and then empties out all the water to fill again for the next step that involves washing.

If the tablet lies at the bottom from the beginning, it will start dissolving too soon and not do a good job at cleaning when the wash cycle starts. You may find some of your dishes dirty even after a wash but the problem lies not in your dishwasher tablet but the way you use them.

However, people do it all the time when the dishwasher dispenser stops working or the tablets are too big to fit in there. In some equipment, the pre-wash cycle is very small so you don’t lose a lot of detergents there.

When you are facing issues with the dishwasher compartment, I would recommend you to do a test first. Dump the tablet before the prewash. When the machine releases the water after the first cycle, open the lid just before the long wash, and check how much of the tablet has dissolved.

If it’s a negligible amount then you probably won’t care much. However, if the equipment you use has a longer pre-wash period and dissolves a lot of detergents then you may want to add the tablet after the pre-wash.

However, please bear in mind that the dishwasher compartment is designed to release the detergent slowly after the pre-rinse cycle. There is a reason why there is a separate compartment for tablets. If there are issues, I strongly recommend getting your dishwasher fixed.

How To Fix A Dishwasher Not Dissolving Tablet Placed In Compartment

If the dishwasher tablet remains un-dissolved even after the cycle ends, you may need to check the water temperature. If the hot water temperature in your dishwasher measures below 110F/115F, it may not be enough to dissolve certain brands of tablet.

So, check the water temperature before you start the dishwasher. I would recommend that you run the hot water in the sink for some time until the water is very hot and then start the dishwasher cycle. The main purpose is to run the machine on the hottest and longest cycle possible.

If the tablet still does not dissolve fully, check to see if the spring opening action of the dispenser door is functioning properly. If the dispenser is too small, the big size detergent tablet may jam the door and not allow it to open properly.

To fix this situation, try using the high-quality gel or liquid dishwasher detergent available in the market. You may also use a powdered detergent with rinse aid to help you get rid of the spots when the tablets don’t dissolve well.

Can Washing Machine Detergent Go In Dishwasher?

When people run out of dishwasher tablets or solutions, they often wonder if they can use the machine or laundry detergent, maybe just one time. What harm can it possibly make? Both are meant for washing and cleaning after all.

Well, let’s not forget that both these types of detergents are formulated uniquely for a different purpose altogether. While a dishwasher tablet or detergent has agents to wash off the stubborn food from cutlery and dishes, the laundry detergent may have fragrances, brighteners, and stain removers.

Laundry detergent may also contain water conditioners to protect clothes from damage. These toxic substances may not be completely removed from the dishes even after they are washed. If you accidentally ingest them, these agents may cause health issues.

By putting washing detergent in the dishwasher, you also risk having a lot of foam overflowing in the kitchen. The dishwasher detergent is formulated in a way to have no sudsing acting as it cleans the dishes. Hence, it’s not a good idea to use anything other than what is recommended for the appliance.

Finally, you will also likely void your warranty and impact the life expectancy of the dishwasher. The washing detergent may not clean the dishes well, and leave behind a lot of residues that may cause performance issues in the appliance.

7 Reasons Why Dishwasher Tablets Are Better Than Gels And Powders

If you thought dishwashers may not be able to scrub off over boiled milk from the bottom of the pan, think again. Today, there are powerful detergents delivered in the form of tablets that contain bleaches, builders, enzymes, and surfactants to give you sparkling utensils.

They also contain extras such as disintegrants needed to break down the tablets and ensure that all actives dissolve fast inside the dishwasher. Here are 7 good reasons that explain why dishwasher tablets are better than gels and powders.

#1. Ease of use

The tablets bring some extra convenience and comfort to your busy routine. You no more need to worry about measuring out detergent powders or risk spilling the liquid detergent. There’s a special chamber built for the tablets so you just take one tablet and pop it inside the dispenser to get hassle-free washing.

#2. Economic use

The tablets come pre-measured so there is no wastage of detergent, which is common in case of powders, gels, and liquids. I have a pro tip for you – break the tablet into the half when you have fewer dishes to wash and you may keep the other half for next wash.

Don’t be tempted to use two tablets for stubborn stains or dried food as using extra will not make your utensils any cleaner. One tablet is usually enough and the hot water does its job on the stains and dried food particles.

#3. Various options to choose from

Unlike the heavy fragrance of laundry detergent, the dishwasher tablets leave a subtle and fruity scent behind. It leaves your dishes not only squeaky clean but also smelling fresh. You can choose from a wide range of fragrance options available.

#4. Power-packed action

The dishwasher tablets are made of several gel packs and powerballs that make it easier to remove stains quickly. You may have seen different colors in a tablet. Interestingly, each color dissolves separately at different times to give your dishes a thorough wash.

#5. Compact size

Besides the amazing abilities of the dishwasher tablet, another important feature that deserves a mention is the compact size of the tablet. They are powerful, yet small enough to easily store several tablets in a jar.

#6. Saves times

The dishwashing tablets combine several tasks such as de-greasing and pre-wash to ensure that you spend less time scrubbing and soaking. You can also buy dishwasher tablets that are meant to clean the equipment to enhance its life expectancy.

#7. Environment-friendly

The unique formulation of dishwashing tablets makes them safe for the environment at large.  They reduce the amount of soap entering into the water supply, and this eases the pressure on water treatment plants.

Related Questions Can You Use Dishwasher Tablets In Any Dishwasher?

You must only use the dishwater liquid, powder, tablet, or pod that is specifically designed for the specific model. Using a different kind of detergent may cause unwanted sudsing in the dishwasher, resulting in poor performance. It may cause suds and water on your kitchen floor.

Can I use dishwasher tablets in older equipment?

If you own old equipment that does not have a separate compartment to keep the dishwashing tablets, you can keep them on the top shelf. While some people prefer keeping the tablets at the bottom, this usually results in the tablets dissolving quickly.

What to do if you accidentally put laundry detergent in the dishwasher?

You will end up with too much suds so that will mean a lot of mopping and wiping of the floor. When the cycle stops, I would recommend washing again with half a tablet of dishwasher tablet to ensure that any toxic elements are washed away.

Why are dishwasher tablets expensive?

The dishwasher tablets are more expensive than any other forms of detergents – powders or gels. When you have loads of varying capacities, you have less flexibility with the tablets. Furthermore, the tablets come in one single size and some tablets may require a longer wash cycle to dissolve completely.

Why is my dishwasher tablets stuck in the dispenser?

Before running a dishwasher, you must ensure that the dispenser compartment is clean and dry. If there are any traces of moisture, it will cause the detergent to stick to the surface. Hence, I recommend that you wipe the dispenser with a clean and dry cloth before putting the tablet.

Who doesn’t like a clean and dry bathroom? Due to the busy lifestyle, I often neglect cleaning the bathroom tiles until the hard water stains start staring at me. Let’s admit that house cleaning is REAL WORK and bathroom is one place that needs a lot of maintenance.

How to clean bathroom tiles hard water stains? I prefer using safe and natural items like vinegar and lemon readily available in the kitchen to get rid of the white and ugly rings. The acid in these cleaners helps in breaking down the mineral deposits to give clean and sanitized bathroom tiles.

Let’s not forget that hard water deposits are alkali in nature, which means it has a pH level greater than 7. So, if you use any form of acid that has a lower pH than 7, it will help soften the water deposits and ultimately dissolve them.

Read on to discover the different ways in which you can clean the hard water stains on bathroom tiles naturally. Follow the steps to make your own cleaning solution. Before that, let’s take a quick look at how hard water stains are caused.

How Hard Water Stains Are Formed?

Hard water contains a high concentration of mineral deposits, especially calcium and magnesium. As the traces of mineral in the water rise, the degree of hardness also increases. Hard water with dissolved minerals is found in places where the water comes from municipal water pipes and wells

When the hard water containing minerals evaporate, water goes into the air as vapor leaving behind an ugly coating or white mark on the surface. If your bathroom has dark colored tiles, they are easily visible. If neglected for long, they can make your bathroom tiles look untidy.

Unless you clean the deposits on a regular basis, you will leave dirt particles, soap and shampoo scum over the mineral crystals every time you take a shower. The dirt locks over the previous layer of mineral deposits to create layers of cake comprising of dirt and hard water deposits.

What Are The Best Homemade Hard Water Cleansers

I strongly suggest you not to use abrasive chemicals and cleaning agents on bathroom tiles as this can damage the color and shine. Homemade solutions are not only safe but they are also super effective in removing stains from tiles, walls, and faucets.

Using Lemon juice:

Lemon juice works as a natural acid to quickly remove stubborn hard water stains from the bathroom tiles. Besides making your bathroom squeaky clean, it also leaves a refreshing lemony smell that can cover any foul smell.

To make a lemon cleansing solution, you simply need to take 4-5 lemons (more if you are treating a larger surface). Squeeze out the juice of all lemons and apply it over the hard water stains on the bathroom tiles. You must make sure that the lemon juice covers the stains completely. Leave it for some time and then scrub off.

Using Baking Soda:

As one of the frequently used natural cleaning agents, baking soda is one of the most readily available ingredients in the household. The mild abrasive characteristic of baking soda works on tough stains and stubborn spots with ease to give you a clean and germ-free bathroom.

You can make a natural and cost-effective cleaning solution by mixing baking soda with water to make a smooth paste. Smear this paste over the hard water stains on the bathroom tiles and let it sit for some time. You can then scrub off using a sponge or bathroom brush.

Using White Vinegar:

White vinegar is yet another natural and effective cleaning agent that has earned the reputation of an all-rounder cleaner. The gentle acidic nature of vinegar works perfectly to help you remove the hard water stains from bathroom tiles. It also prevents the growth of disease-causing germs such as mildew and mold.

White vinegar is helpful in cutting through the mineral deposits and quickly removes the hard water stains from bathroom tiles. Vinegar can be mixed with several other cleaning agents to create a more powerful solution to remove the stubborn stains. Here are some interesting ways to use vinegar:

Vinegar Spray

  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tsp. dishwashing liquid

To make a quick vinegar cleansing solution, you need to mix two cups of vinegar with a cup of warm water and one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Transfer this content into a spray bottle and spray some over the stains. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes and then scrub with a brush or sponge. Rinse the area and repeat if needed.

Vinegar Scrubbing Paste

The mild vinegar spray might not work for the stubborn stains that have been neglected for a long time. I would recommend adding borax to vinegar solution to prepare a heavy duty scrubbing paste. When both vinegar and borax come together, they form a cleanser that is powerful enough to cut all types of stains. To make your own vinegar-borax paste, you will need:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 3/4 cup of borax powder
  • 1 tsp dishwashing liquid (optional)

Mix the above items and create a paste that is thick enough to not run down when applied on any surface. Apply this paste on the bathroom tiles that have ugly hard water stains, ensuring that you completely cover the stains. Scrub using a wet sponge and rinse.

A pro tip: You may use lemon juice in the place of vinegar if the later is not available.

Using Pumice Stone

For the extremely stubborn stains, I often turn to the pumice stone but you must ensure that the surface is wet so that you don’t scratch the tiles. If you have colored bathroom tiles, I would not recommend using a pumice stone.

To use a pumice stone, just wet the stone with water and gently scrub the area that has hard water stains on them. Apply light pressure and keep scrubbing until all the stains are gone.

Using Salt

This may appear like a surprise entrant for you, but salt can actually help you get rid of hard water stains from the bathroom tiles. It can effectively cut through the tough stains and hard water spots. As salt is a disinfectant, it may help in killing the germs to keep your bathroom hygienic.

Before using salt, you need to first wet the bathroom tiles and then sprinkle some salt on the stains to cover the area. Let the salt sit on the stains for at least 30 minutes and then scrub off the whole thing using a gentle scrubber.

Using Borax

Although borax is a naturally occurring mineral, it can help you remove the hard water stains that comprise of mineral traces. The high alkali nature of borax helps in dissolving the stubborn hard water spots and stains. It also kills the bacteria and microbes to give you clean and odor-free bathroom.

To prepare the cleaning mixture, you need to mix one cup of borax with a gallon of water. You can transfer this mixture into a spray bottle and spray on the hard water stains on bathroom tiles. Let it sit for some time and then scrub using sponge or brush.

5 Ways To Prevent Future Buildup Of Hard Water Stains

You will be surprised to know the kind of difference you can create by changing some habits and following a schedule to prevent the buildup of hard water stains in the future.  Here are some smart tips that can help you:

#1. Clean bathroom tiles weekly

You may not be able to clean the tiles daily due to your work and family commitments, but make it a habit to clean at least once every week. A bathroom is an important place of the house and you need to keep it clean and germ-free to ensure the good health of your family. Hard water stains are easier to clean when they are fresh.

#2. Using warm water to clean

Try to clean the bathroom tiles using warm water occasionally to get rid of the hard water stains. If there are dried scum or stains on the tiles, warm water can help by dissolving them easily.

#3. Mop/ rinse daily after shower

Mop the bathroom floor and wipe the wall tiles with a dry towel after you take a shower. Make it a habit and ensure that your family members also mop/ rinse the bathroom after each shower. Keeping the bathroom dry prevents the growth of mildew, mold, and stains.

#4. Avoid harmful chemicals

I know it may be tempting to use chemicals to get rid of the stubborn stains quickly and easily, but beware – this can damage the sealants of the tiles. You would definitely not want to spoil the flooring while trying to clean it.

#5. Keep your bathroom well-ventilated

You must ensure the bathroom is airy enough to not allow any moisture to thrive inside. Proper ventilation helps the water to evaporate quickly instead of sitting on the tiles and causing hard water rings. You may use an exhaust fan to keep the bathroom dry and prevent any stain or mold formation.

#6. Invest a water softener for your home

Well, it’s no secret that hard water stains are caused because the water in your area has a higher pH level. You can fix this by buying a water softener to improve the quality of water. This investment will save you from unwanted cleaning hassles for years.

#7. Buy a high-quality squeegee

Nothing cleans better than a squeegee like this with a good quality rubber blade. Use it to remove water from floors and walls to prevent water standing for long on any surface. If you drain water quickly, there will not be any hard water deposits on the tiles.

Related Question Can I Steam Clean Bathroom Tiles?

Yes, steam cleaning is a safe and effective method to get rid of the hard water stains on bathroom tiles without the use of chemicals. It is a favored technique by parents to sanitize kitchen and bathroom tiles without using hazardous chemicals.

The steam cleaners (click to see my review) combine the powerful effect of pressurized streams of hot water that helps in dissolving tough and stubborn stains. This is a less costly method than replacing the tile flooring. The hot vapor also helps in killing microbes like streptococcus, Hepatitis A, Staphylococcus, and E. Coli.

Will the tiles look like new after cleaning?

If you have neglected the hard water stains for too long, it will require some patience and perseverance. It may not go away all at once, but repeated cleaning will eventually make the stains lighter and give your tiles a new like shine.

Windows cleaning may not be cringe-worthy like scrubbing a stained sink or old toilet bowl, but it is a tedious and repetitive job nevertheless. After all that careful cleaning and scrubbing, it can be annoying to find streaks that reveal their ugly faces when sunlight falls on the glass. From my experience, I have seen that using water results in an inevitable mess of streaks that often take hours to handle.

So, can you clean windows without water? Yes, you can use a soft microfiber cloth soaked in a good quality window cleaning solution. Unlike water or a soapy solution, this will not create any streaks on your glass windows, coffee tables, or mirrors.

It is essential to choose a good windows cleaning solution because some of them may contain harsh chemicals. Let’s not forget that glass is temperamental in nature, and harsh cleaning supplies may eat away the surface. Just a drop of concentrated degreaser is enough to leave permanent marks and unsightly swirls.

What’s The Natural Alternative To Cleaning Solutions?

If you do not want to buy a cleaning solution, you may use vinegar instead ( click to see 100 Uses of Vinegar). This anti-bacterial and non-toxic agent is a miracle from nature and works for any type of surface. It can effectively kill germs thriving on the dust film over the glass windows.

The best part is that it is much more economical than cleaning solutions and causes no harm if children ingest or inhale it by mistake. If you have kids, you can use this safe and natural cleaning solution at home. However, a vinegar solution usually includes a part of distilled water or tap water.

Today we are discussing ways to clean windows without water, so let’s find out how we can use vinegar without mixing it with water. To clean without water, take some white vinegar solution and warm it up slightly. Now, use this solution directly on the glass to get a streaks-free view.

What Is The Best Scrubbing Medium To Clean Without Streaking?

I recommend using a microfiber towel (see my detailed reviews) or chamois to scrub the windows using the cleaning solution. You can also do a neat job using a regular rag.  Newspapers and a plastic scraper may be good to scrub off dry things stuck on the windows, for example, bird poop. However, I would not recommend using newspapers and paper towels with cleaning solutions as a paper leave behind a lot of lint on the surfaces.

Another useful and efficient tool for cleaning windows is a squeegee. It can wash away your window and give you a clear and streak-free surface. You will never have to look back at newspapers and rags again, however using a squeegee takes some time and requires good practice to get a hang of it. Read on to find out how to find the right squeegee for window cleaning.

Why Avoid Paper Towels While Cleaning Windows

While it’s common for people to use paper towels to clean windows and mirrors on any day, a roll of paper towels is not the best solution. When used on glass windows, the paper towels not only leave streaks but lint that are difficult to get rid of.

While the paper towels are good at cleaning spills, they don’t do a decent job on the window glass. As they are made of tiny paper fibers, they leave a thin film of fuzzy residue or lint on the otherwise clean windows. Who wants to spend hours cleaning windows only to end up with lint?

What Type Of Squeegee Works Best For Cleaning Windows?

When it comes to cleaning windows, a squeegee is an essential tool in your kitty. I suggest that you invest in a good quality squeegee that cleans well, not like the cheap ones you see at the petrol stations. Some of the recommended brands are Sorbo, Ettore, and Unger

A good quality squeegee comprises of three parts – rubber, handle, and channel. You can change the rubber when it gets old by replacing it with a new one, so your tool has a longer life.  While the squeegees come in different sizes varying from 4 inches to 24 inches, the 14-inch squeegee is suitable for most windows.

Steps To Clean Window Without Water

When it comes to window cleaning, glass is the most critical part. You need to be careful about your choice of tools and other cleaning supplies to ensure that you do not leave unsightly lint or streaks on them. Here are the steps you need to follow to clean window without water.

#1. Do some prep work

Windows take a lot of beating, especially the kitchen and bathroom windows. From splattered oil and water to errant toothpaste and dirty hands of children, so many things go into making windows dirty. So, when you schedule a cleaning day, start with some preparation work first.

Some of the dust, dirt, and grime may stick on the surface but there are many things that can be easily dusted off.  So, take a clean and soft cloth and dust window frames and glasses to remove dust, spider webs, and bugs. You may also use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt from the windowsill and sashes.

#2. Choose a good window cleaner

You can visit your nearby grocery store or look online to find the best quality glass and window cleaners. Some branded cleansers are marketed as streak-free, but make sure you avoid the ones that contain harsh chemicals as they can damage the glass.

You can choose one of the commercial solutions or make your own white vinegar based cleanser by warming it up. Put your homemade solution in a spray bottle and use it as a safe and fuss-free solution. Spray the cleaning solution all over the window ensuring that you properly cover the dirty areas, and leave it for a few seconds.

#3. Use the right cleaning cloth

Next, take a low-lint towel or natural chamois cloth to start scrubbing the window. You must avoid paper towels as they cover the mirror or glass with a thin film of lint. Make sure you buy only good quality microfiber cloth that make the windows squeaky clean without leaving any lint behind.

You may also use a soft cotton towel for cleaning but make sure it has a tight weave. Some people prefer using newspapers to clean windows but I do not recommend this. It can be messy and if the frames are made of wood, you may get ink stains on the wood.

#4. Changing directions to get a clean glass

Cleaning glass windows can be annoying at times because even after hours of scrubbing, you can still see the swirls and lint in sunlight. My friends often ask me if there is a solution for that. My answer is to change the directions as you wipe the windows. Similar to painting, you need to do the same area several times with strokes from different directions.

Start with a scrubbing pad to make small circular motions to remove most of the moisture from the window. Next, grab a squeegee and make horizontal and vertical swipes to remove any streaks and get a clean window.

#5. Remember to buff!

After you are done with all the scrubbing and wiping, don’t forget the last step that involves buffing the area with a dry cloth. Even after careful cleaning, you may still see some streaks flashing out when light falls on them.

Keep a dry microfiber cloth ready to give one last buff after you are done with cleaning to get rid of those pesky streaks.  You don’t need to do the entire area all over again. Simply buff the streaks when you see them.

If you are thinking to clean your blinds, you must have a look this article. I have spent many hours to write it.

5 Mistakes To Avoid When Cleaning Windows

  • Choosing a sunny day to clean can be frustrating because the cleaning solution will dry out quickly even before you are done with the cleaning. This will leave behind hard to clean streaks. I would recommend you to choose a dry but cloudy day for best results. But, if you are itching to clean on a sunny day, start with the window that does not get too much sun.
  • Not using the window cleaner generously can leave too many streaks. If there is a stubborn spot or layer of dirt and grime, you will need to use a good amount of cleaning solution to dissolve it completely. If you skip this step, there will be many streaks on the glass.
  • Not cleaning the window sill and sashes can be troublesome. It is always better to dust off the dirt and grime to reduce mess with the cleaning solution. You may use a vacuum cleaner like these to remove dust from the window sills, sashes, and frames before dealing with the glass.
  • Using newspaper to dry the wet surface is a trick that does not work for everyone. It can be messy and ineffective. So, make sure to use a good quality microfiber cloth that is super absorbent and easily washable.
  • Cleaning with a weak paper towel is complete no unless you want the glass to be covered with lint. To make things worse, the paper can break into two halves and leave a lot of lint that takes extra time to clean up.
The Final Words

Cleaning windows without water is possible and many people prefer this method as it is less messy. You need the right cleaning tools and good windows cleanser to do the job neatly. Another important aspect of cleaning is to choose the right day, which is not too sunny. Remember to buff at last to remove any streaks and add an extra shine to the windows.

There is nothing more painful for a fish keeper than to see one of the fish-floating belly up or lying lifeless inside the tank. Whether you are a beginner or you have been managing aquarium for years, fish die now and then. It could be a natural death, cleanliness issue, or underlying disease. While dealing with a fish death can be emotional, you need to be proactive to prevent other fish from dying too.

How to clean a fish tank after a fish dies? The first thing you must do as soon as you spot a dead fish is to take out the corpse, examine the dead body, and take necessary steps based on your analysis. If it looks like a natural death, a thorough cleaning may not be necessary. However, if the corpse suggests an internal infection, you may need to change water and clean the interior contents thoroughly.

What Happens If You Don’t Remove The Dead Fish?

Unless you remove the dead fish soon, the body will decompose and pollute the warm, bacteria-laden water. If the fish died from a disease, you would not want other fish to consume its body parts. So, act quickly before it causes a health hazard for other fish in the tank.

After you take out the dead fish, give a quick look to examine the corpse. Are the fins and other body parts intact? Is there a change of color? Is the body bloated? Damaged fins indicate that the fish was bullied or beaten by incompatible fish species. It is common in the case of Malawi cichlids.

If the body looks bloated, this could be due to an internal infection. Test the quality of water immediately because poor water quality is one of the main reasons behind fish deaths. If the water fails the quality test, be prepared to fix any issue such as ammonia.

You must always be ready for an emergency water change if needed. Follow the steps given below to clean a tank after a fish dies. Some of the items you must always have in stock are:

  • Siphon and a special bucket
  • Algae Pad
  • Bleach solution
  • Thermometer
  • Dechlorinator
  • Filter bacteria booster
  • Test kit to check ammonia, nitrite, and pH levels

If the water passes the quality test, the fish death may be brought about by other reasons such as starvation, long-term stress, disease, overfeeding, or inappropriate conditions such as keeping soft water fish in hard water, etc. You don’t need to change water or do a thorough cleaning in this case. A weekly cleaning, as usual, may be enough.

Steps To Clean The Fish Tank (Freshwater tank) Scrub the tank

Take a scrubbing pad and rub along the glass to remove any algae formation sticking on the walls. You may use a razor blade to scrape out stubborn patches. Do not use the scrubber from your kitchen sink as they may have residue of detergent. Always use a separate pad for cleaning tank. It is better to do this step after removing 10-20% of the water.

Check water quality

If your fish died a natural death, a water change might not be necessary. Just make sure, you do the normal 10 to 20% water change weekly to keep other fish healthy. However, if you suspect an infection and possible contamination of the water, do a quick quality test. Based on the results, you may change 25 to 50% of the water and test again.

Important advice – A 100% change of water is rare and not recommended because it can be an environmental shock for the other surviving fish. However, if the water fails the quality test even after a 75% change, you may want to consider a 100% replacement.

Eliminate wastes

To replace the poor quality water, start the siphon and direct the infected water into a bucket. If you are a beginner, you may buy aquarium siphons online to hook them up to the sink. The siphons come with instructions on how to use them. Some products allow you to select the suction level of water and specific temperature when filling the tank with water.

Next, take the gravel vacuum and push it amidst the gravels to suck out fish wastes, debris, excess food, dirt, and germs. If you have a sand substrate in the tank, avoid using a vacuum and run your fingers to remove any gunk or debris trapped under the sand. If you have weak or delicate fish in the tank, cover the vacuum with a never-used stocking to reduce its intensity. However, the mesh should be large enough to suck up the wastes.

Clean decorations

I prefer not to have too many tank decorations so that there is enough space for fish to move around. After a fish dies, you must clean the inner decorations by wiping them with an algae pad or a brand new soft-bristled toothbrush. Never use a soap or detergent as any chemical is harmful to the fish.

If you are having difficulties cleaning decorations in a large tank, take them out of the tank and soak in 10% bleach solution for at least 15 minutes. Pour hot water to remove any traces of bleach from the decorations before putting them back into the tank.

Change water

Replace the old tank water with fresh and treated tap water. Make sure the temperature of the water is the same as the one inside the tank because a significant change of temperature can make other healthy fish sick. If tap water has traces of metals, you may use distilled water or bottled spring water to be on the safe side.

If the fish died due to infection or sickness, add some aquarium salt to fresh water to prevent diseases and ensure that other fish live longer. Wait for a few hours to let the water clear up and become sparkling clean. If the water is still cloudy after several hours, there could be an issue. Avoid using clearing agents as they will hide any problems that need immediate attention.

Change filter (if needed)

Post a fish death, you may consider changing the filter cartridge to ensure that there is no risk of infection. The good bacteria usually live inside the gravel, so there is no harm in changing the filter. I suggest rinsing the filter cartridge with fresh water weekly and replacing it monthly.

How To Clean A Saltwater Aquarium After A Fish Dies?

The salt-water aquariums have slightly different needs. If a fish died inside the tank due to infection, you must remove the corpse immediately and examine the body. You must follow the cleaning procedures as mentioned above with the help of a scrubbing pad, and replacing water 50 to 75% until the water passes the quality tests.

Adding water to a saltwater tank is slightly different, and you would need distilled or reverse osmosis water for this purpose. Put the water in a plastic bucket and heat it using a specialized heater. Add salt to maintain the salinity and pH level of the water. Check the instructions at the back of the packet to add the right quantity of salt to water.

Leave water overnight to aerate properly and next morning check the salinity level using a hygrometer or refractometer. The ideal salinity level of saltwater should be between 1.021 and 1.025, and the water temperature should be between 73 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Please remember that if the water is infected after a fish dies and you need to do a major water change, you will first need to remove remaining fish. Transfer them to a separate fishbowl while you sanitize the tank and change water. If the water change is minimal, you can let the other fish stay inside to get acclimatized to the change.

5 Common Reasons Why Your Fish Dies

Stress is bad for your fish as much as it is bad for you. It may be caused by various factors, but sometimes it may be tough to tell that your fish is stressed. If the fish stays in a stressful environment for too long, this will ultimately result in an untimely death. Here are a few reasons that cause stress.

  • Not setting up a new tank properly can cause death. If you bought a new tank, it would take some time to make it fit for your aquatic friends. Introduce the good bacteria in the aquarium before you put fish and make sure the ideal water temperature is always maintained.
  • Buying the wrong fish can also lead to its death. For example, a saltwater fish cannot thrive in freshwater and will ultimately feel stressed out to death. Another example is betta fish that prefers calm water so a bubbler or filter nozzle can cause stress.
  • Too many fish crammed inside a small tank is a clear fish sentence. If you keep adding more fish in a small space, it means more poop and less oxygen to breathe. With a limited amount of bacteria to break down the waste, the water will get polluted and cause infection and diseases.
  • Mixing incompatible fish can also kill your fish. Some fish species like cichlids, blue gourami, Chinese algae eaters, and male betta can be aggressive, fight over food and even bully other fish. Always being chased and bullied can cause a stressful environment for your fish.
  • Overfeeding is another common cause of fish death. You not only overstuff the fish but also make the water harmful. More food means they poop more and uneaten food also decays faster. Hence, feed only as much needed and clean the tank regularly.
The Final Words

Seeing your beloved pet lying lifeless inside the tank can be heartbreaking for you, but don’t beat yourself up for it! Accidents do happen, and you need to learn from them. Was this a natural death after your fish lived a full life or was it induced due to stress? Identifying the reasons and taking care of the remaining fish will make you a better fish keeper and your fish will thank you for it!
