Last Updated October 2018 Visiting Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe has to be one of the top activities in all of Africa. This impressive waterfall is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ in the local languages of Lozi or Kololo. The first time I visited Victoria Falls, I heard the roar of the water (the ‘thunder’) crashing down into the gorge below and was covered in a fine mist (the ‘smoke’) before I even caught a glimpse of the falls themselves. I’d even see the mist rising into the sky as I flew into Livingstone airport. It is, for sure, one of the most spectacular places to visit on earth. The Best Time of Year to Visit Victoria Falls Whilst most people would be content with visiting Victoria Falls once, or maybe even twice, I’ve been to Victoria Falls ten times (I think). I’ve visited eight times by day, twice by night and at four different times of the year. Nine of those times were on the Zambian side and once on the Zimbabwe side. As the falls change dramatically with the seasons, each time has been a very different and profound […]
Last updated October 2018 Deciding what to pack for Africa, especially if you’re travelling long term, covering multiple countries with different dress codes, cultural considerations, weather conditions and temperatures, can be a bit confusing! But don’t worry, with this comprehensive Africa packing list, I’ve got you covered or pretty much every country and all situations! This is generally a packing list for women, but fellas, you’ll get the idea! Just to be clear, you do probably don’t need everything on this list. A lot will depend on where and when you are going. For example, if you’re travelling to Zanzibar for two weeks, you’re not going to need a down jacket, however if you’re travelling to Namibia or Botswana in the colder winter months, you definitely will need a down jacket. If you’re not trekking for days on end in the rainy season, do you really need a heavy waterproof jacket? No. If you’re not into photography, do you need a tripod? No. But, if you are travelling for a long period of time, many of these items will come in useful, so pick and choose the items appropriate to your own needs. Baggage Backpack When you are travelling around Africa, your bags […]
Welcome to the Rock My Namibia Adventure photo diary – August 2018 edition! My aim was to keep a photo diary of each of the Rock My Adventure tours, however, after running 16 tours, I’ve only managed to put up two photo diaries! Oops! But that’s going to change now that I have a bit more time! So I’m going to start with the last trip I did in Namibia and work backwards! On this trip we saw so many of the highlights of Namibia, from Fish River Canyon in the south to Opuwo in North and everything in between! It was epic! This was such a cool trip, with a great group of people – my biggest group yet! We’ve had some amazing feedback and the best news is… we’re doing it all again next year!!!! And yes that is a picture of an elephant, a rhino and 3 giraffes hanging out at a waterhole… at sunset! Simply magical! “After participating in Helen’s inaugural Rock My Namibia Adventure tour, all I have to say is…not only would I repeat that same tour again, but I will absolutely be joining more of Helen’s other tours in future! It was an unforgettable, adventurous […]
Leading the Rock My Adventure tours over the last 3 years has been such an incredible experience. It has given me the opportunity to promote and support a number of local businesses in Africa and make a lot of new friends in the process, at the same time allowing me to connect with my readers (and a few folks who just randomly stumbled across my tours and liked the idea behind them) and bring people together. It’s been wonderful to share experiences and travel with so many lovely people from around the world, whilst showing them the Africa I know and love. It’s been a year of growth too. I did twice as many tours this year as I did last year and took on a new tour leader, Jessi. I met Jessi when she came on the 2017 Rock My Uganda, Rwanda & DRC and we became good friends. Her enthusiasm, positive attitude, tenacity and sense of adventure really impressed me and straight away, I knew she’d be an awesome tour leader. So when I decided to expand, I asked her if she’d like to join the Rock My Adventure team and to my delight, she accepted! It’s been […]
