Italian Short Story: "La piscina è vuota"

People pay to stay in a place with a swimming pool but then never use it.

2019/05/12

By Stefano Lodola

Piscina Vuota - SoundCloud
(85 secs long, 15 plays)Play in SoundCloud

Infatti, io vado in piscina tutti i giorni.

The swimming pool is empty

The condo where I’m staying has a large, 8-shaped swimming poll. There’s even a Jacuzzi.

For me, the swimming pool is important because it’s very hot here. That’s why I go to the swimming pool every day.

On the contrary, the others from the condo don’t. And the condo is big: it has 30 stories. However, the pool is almost always empty.

That’s the irony: people pay to stay in a place with a swimming pool but then never use it. Maybe they don’t have time for the swimming pool because they’re busy making money to pay for the swimming pool.

Anyway, it’s better not to have too many people in the swimming pool.

There’s even a gym. That’s almost always empty, too. I don’t use it either because I don’t like working out in the gym.

Anyway, I’m not paying to stay here. It’s a friend’s place.

Italian Short Story: "La mania delle foto"

Most people are not interested in the pictures you share.

2019/05/15

By Stefano Lodola

Mania Foto - SoundCloud
(101 secs long)Play in SoundCloud
Photo mania With smartphones, everyone has the mania of taking photos: photos at the bar, photos on holidays, photos in the restroom, photos of cakes, photos of dogs, photos of bags… But taking photos is not enough: you need to share them. All the world should know and see what you had for lunch, what dress you put on, what car you bought. Unfortunately, most people are not interested in these things. On the contrary, they just don’t want to see them. Facebook has a beautiful feature: for every post, you can click on “hide this message”. Facebook realizes that you’re not interested in posts like that and doesn’t show that to you anymore. I always do that with pictures of food, dogs, and children. I can make an exception for pictures of cats, which are the most beautiful animals in the world.

Student with Down syndrome graduates summa cum laude

Giulia Sauro, a 33-year old woman from Naples with Down syndrome, has graduated in political science summa cum laude from the university Orientale in Naples.

Recently, the newly graduate met with the mayor of Naples and the president of the region of Campania. The president defines her “an example of intelligence, strength of will, and courage”, while the mayor points out that Giulia’s case is “the third case in Italy of a person with Down syndrome obtaining a university degree”.

Giulia graduated with a thesis on the French Revolution, with the historian Luigi Mascilli Migliorini as her supervisor. She also received a scholarship through the project “Fair tutoring”.

Sindaco Di Bologna Lancia Iniziativa Per Boicottare Le Piattaforme Di Cibo A Domicilio - SoundCloud
(101 secs long, 28 plays)Play in SoundCloud

The mayor of Bologna launches an initiative to boycott food delivery apps

In Bologna, the companies Sgam and MyMenu have signed the first “Charter of fundamental rights of digital city workers”. Sgam and MyMenu employ about 140 delivery people out of the 500 who home-deliver meals in Bologna.

However, the other big players in the industry of cooked food home delivery did not participate: from Deliveroo to Foodora, and from Glovo to JustEat.

The city mayor called on every consumer: “Now you have the chance to order your pizza from those who don’t exploit people.” An invitation to boycott those who didn’t sign.

The city government will post a list of those who don’t respect the rights of the bike workers, such as a fair hourly wage, the right not to deliver by bicycle in case of bad weather and the obligation to have insurance.
