Austin shared some awesome tips on how you can increase your average customer lifetime value…


The more frequently you roll out new, quality products, the better. People need more stuff to buy! It sounds simple, right? Well, it’s so simple that it’s often overlooked.

Small, consistent releases keep people excited about your brand. Best case scenario, you introduce a new product on a monthly basis. Once you get good at it, you’ll find it’s less stressful than a big annual collection, and it leads to steadier growth.

If you were only going to do just ONE thing to increase your customer lifetime value, this would be it.


You can’t sell products if nobody knows they exist…

Capture and tell people about your new products. It’s super effective, and cheaper than buying ads!

The fastest growing brands are the ones launching products consistently and emailing their customers regularly. Austin shared that this is the biggest missed opportunity among newer companies.

You should be sending out an email at least twice a month, if not more!


Thinking like an artist has gotten you this far, but to keep growing you have to shift your mindset to that of a business owner. Prioritize the customers you already have and focus on what will generate consistent revenue for your company.

Like Austin said, there’s a huge difference between a company that’s able to scale and grow, and an artist who’s always stuck in a grind. It all comes down to thinking like a business owner.

It may sound hard to believe but all too often, it's not even clear to a digital passerby what someone does based on their homepage.

Since it's your work and your site, you may need to get a second set of eyes. Does your homepage copy quickly and effectively describe not only the fact that you sell jewelry – but also what kind and what experience it provides?

Your copy is the first step in creating that 30-second impression!

Your email opt-in…

Your homepage is the perfect place to capture a new lead by getting someone to join your …

First of all, please don’t ask people to join for “updates.” We all have full inboxes. People want value – not updates.

How can you tie your opt-in offer into your brand transformation? Discounts are great, but you can go beyond that too! For example, if you use healing stones, offer a list of the benefits of each stone you use. Or if you create a wedding or engagement pieces, offer a checklist for what you need to plan your wedding.

Testimonials + case studies…

Getting actual information from your real customers is one of the best ways to connect with potential ones…

Testimonials and case studies serve slightly different purposes. But they both offer a potential customer a chance to see themselves working with you. If they can relate to the story being shared, suddenly they can understand how and why you’re the perfect person for them to work with!

Creating a captivating homepage is one of the best tools you have available for bringing in and converting new leads. In order to make the most of the traffic on your site, this piece of your business deserves your time and attention.

Wholesale isn’t the same as it used to be. It's tough these days to find buyers who will buy the product outright – not on memo.

Things are moving faster than ever. And the processes for success are shifting.

But a common obstacle we’re facing is the fact that the backend of our industry isn’t really keeping up…

That is to say, the supplier section of the jewelry industry can feel like it's stuck in the past.

I absolutely loved hearing about all of the ways these guys are going against the industry norms and making things EASIER for designers. I now officially have a new supplier for my rose cut diamonds, and once you hear about what they’re doing, I think you will too!

Dream Diamonds specializes in alternative diamonds – and they’re giving equal access to everyone… no matter they’re experience or connections.

Gone are the days where seasoned designers are getting special access and special pricing. And that’s not the only thing they’re doing that’s unique…

Online Sales

Ash shared with me that the newest generation of designers is getting really used to purchasing off of video and photos online. This is really good for designers because it allows them to buy stones at a set price, without having to put all of their capital into stones – leaving them with little access to their money.

Dream Diamond has an easy to use website with ordering available online. No longer will you have to sit by while a supplier types at a calculator and seems to make a price for the stones in front of you.

Going beyond ethically sourced

Another amazing thing this company is doing is going beyond the regular standards for ethically sourced stones. They actually spend a significant amount of time on each stone, figuring out exactly where it came from. This allows them to provide a certificate of origin with each and every stone they sell – so you really know where your stones are coming from.

Partnering with designers

As an online brand, Dream Diamond has been using their online platforms like Instagram to actually partner with and featured designers. This is another one of the ways they’re supporting fresh, young designers – and really creating a sense of community in the industry.

It's so incredible to watch cutting edge brands like this one changing our industry in a way that’s actually uplifting designers – and truly creating a market where everyone wins.

Brand recognition…

Having beautiful packaging that stands out from other designers is an essential part of any brand…

Think of it like this: if you give someone a gift of jewelry and it's in a plain brown box, there’s going to be no recognition there. They won’t have any idea where it came from. But if it's in a branded box, with your unique colors and logo, the next time they see that branding –  they’ll recognize it!

So having branded packaging can really go a long way in terms of creating recognition and standing out.

Unboxing videos….

Often when I’m making an engagement ring or any really special piece, I’ll film my customer as they open it! I  love seeing how our designers in the SOS coaching program are using this strategy as well…

If it's a custom designer, they might take a video of them delivering the piece to the client. Or ask a husband to film his wife opening a gift.

These videos are so FUN to watch! How many times have you gotten pulled into an unboxing video on Instagram or facebook? This is really a great way to use the unique branding your packaging creates as a marketing tool.

Elevating your product…

When people invest in a nice piece of jewelry, they want to enjoy the experience of opening it. The feeling of opening a simple box with no branding vs. opening something that’s been beautifully packaged is immense….

It actually elevates the piece itself. It totally enhances the experience. This is why amazing packaging can actually allow you to charge more overall for your pieces. It can really upgrade the experience of the piece.

There’s truly so much to be gained from investing in creating great packaging for your brand…

The amazing thing about designers is we’re each so unique…

It's so cool how you don’t have to be a certain way to succeed in this industry.

As I’ve really gotten to know my own gifts and talents, I’ve realized something…

So let’s dive into a couple of the most common types…

Creative Force Of Nature

Designers with this as their top strength love design – but above all, they love interacting with their customers. They are naturally outgoing and actually enjoy talking about their work.

They do love design but they also understand… once they grow their business, they may need to let someone else take parts of that process on. And that’s okay with them!

These people are basically a never-ending flow of ideas…

If this is you, my biggest advice for you is to spend time being creative, spend time engaging with customers… but also spend the time in the back end of your business so you can really get the support around you that you need to grow.

Maker With the Mostest

These types absolutely love working with their hands… One thing that’s amazing about makers with the mostest is that they’re actually inspired by the materials they use to create.

It's the tactile experience that really gets them turned on in their work.

As a business grows, this type is likely to continue making their original sample lines… whereas other types may sketch out the designs and be okay with someone else managing the next steps.

If this is you, you need to remember that you really are your best salesperson. Even though you love being behind the bench, don’t let this stop you from getting out and engaging with your customers!

The Artist

These people truly view the world as artists. These are innovators… they're the ones who are creating the techniques the makers are learning.

Artists love problem-solving. When someone else may give up and abandon a technique that’s not working for them – the artist will sit with it until they figure it out.

These types really need to focus on two things: confidence + mindset.

In art school, you may have learned that everything should be about the art. And so you master that, but you don’t actually learn how to build a business!

You’ve gotta work on your confidence so you can believe your work is good enough. Not in an arrogant way – but in a way that gives you the strength you need to get out and advocate and sell for yourself!

Teasing behind the scenes…

When you’re in the process of making your pieces, you can create hype with your audience! Take lots of photos during the design process and post them on social…

This kind of thing creates tons of curiosity from your audience!

Alex says her DM’s are full of people asking questions about designs, materials and beyond.

Share release dates… but not too early!

When you’re working on the collection, you want to keep people in anticipation. So let them know when designs are coming, but keep them checking for that final release date!

You also don’t want to make the mistake of giving one date and then changing it! Talk about a hype killer…

So definitely create that anticipation, but don’t give them a final date until you’re sure you’re going to be ready.

Treat your email as a VIP list…

One thing Alex is doing that’s super unique and simple is treating her as her VIP’s. Not everyone who follows her on social is on her email list.

So instead of having two lists, when she’s getting close to release – her email list subscribers are the first to know. They even get 24 hours of exclusive shop time before anyone else!

Wow! I seriously can’t believe this week was episode #200 of the Thrive by Design Podcast!

I started this show because I wanted to serve the jewelry community in a bigger way.

Back in the 90’s when I was starting out, there wasn’t anything like this!

That’s why I’m so passionate about this work…

I love serving this community. Helping YOU reach big numbers. Helping you grow your business.

And how cool that we now have this platform to share information through!

Although I’ve watched the industry change at a crazy pace, I’ve also realized…

Many of the issues we were having back then (pre-internet), are the same ones we have now!

They come down to the fact that we’re visionaries. We’re creatives. We’re literally artists. So even when the market changes, a lot of those struggles stay the same.

So this week on the podcast we’re going back through all of the favorite episodes from the last few years. I’m going to recap some of the ones YOU, our listeners loved the most.

And I’m going to share my personal favorites as well.

The bottom line is – we’re in this business because we love it!

It's not all about money. It's about having a business we truly love…

Most people think the key to exposure is through high-level influencers.

No shade to my fav influencers out there, but it’s going to take more than a beautiful feed to really connect your business with others.

That’s where having a website that serves as your #1 selling tool comes in handy.

This is crucial for attracting the right customers and connections…

When Will Farrow’s office wanted a psychic, Laura was their FIRST choice – all thanks to her badass online presence. His producer literally spent several hours on her website!

Professional photos, graphics, and one-sheets are the low hanging fruit to gaining more exposure. You’ve gotta have your website up, running, and stocked with your best content.


It’s all about finding your niche.

One of the things I hear a lot is how difficult it is to find your place on a platform that’s “already saturated”.

Take YouTube, for example.

Lots of makers and designers stray away from that platform, worried that they won’t stand out in a sea of content. If this is your fear – you probably haven’t found your niche audience yet…

But with podcasting, it's WAY easier to tap into niche markets than with other large media platforms.

And with those niche markets, you ultimately reach YOUR people more successfully.

Laura recommends slipping into the podcast market because quite frankly: it’s easier!

You’ve gotta work your way outside of the box.

Take it from her: she’s hit 4 million downloads in one year.


This rule applies to every aspect of a business.

If you want to see your biz grow and your exposure increase, you’ll need to delegate work to others and focus more on those money-making tasks.

That could mean hiring a virtual assistant, a Podcast Producer, an Operations Manager — anyone who’s qualified and motivated to do the jobs that aren’t in your zone of brilliance!

You can easily get a qualified remote assistant for $3-7/hour.

This is a bigtime rookie mistake. Always get an NDA… No. Matter. What.

Essentially, this is how you show manufacturers that you’re serious. That you’re going to be paying attention and not turning a blind eye. And it protects you if something does go wrong.

Molds and Cads

These are actually part of your intellectual property and need to be included in your NDA!

Don’t fall into the trap of deciding you’re done working with a manufacturer and not being able to get your molds back. You need to protect these as much as any other intellectual property.

No Outsourcing

Once you start working with a manufacturer. Take your time to get to know them. Understand who works for them and who is overseeing which parts of production.

Don’t just assume it's being handled well and don’t accept work that’s being outsourced from their company.

Does talking about making money in your biz make you squirm a little bit?

It's super hard when you pour yourself into your biz but aren’t making any money. It feels like no matter how amazing your work is, you’re “not good enough.”

I’ve been there, I know…

I have this crazy idea: I want to dust off the old stigma around being a “starving artist” and reframe it to be the “thriving artist” – or jewelry designer! Whatever your creative passion is, YOU CAN make money doing what you love!

I’m extroverted so I love to chat and connect with my customers. But really anyone can attract more money to their biz.

Don’t believe me??

A few weeks ago in San Francisco, we invited our SOS members to a 2-day workshop – which was SO. MUCH. FUN!

During the workshop, I challenged the designers to personally text, email, DM or call at least one customer and make a sale.

Not everyone was game at first…

Some designers felt awkward or shy. Others didn’t know who to reach out to or didn’t want to bug people.

BUT, in the end, they totally showed up and came through with HUGE wins.

In just one hour, the designers sitting in that room (there were about 25) brought in over $17,000!

Shut-the-front-door, AMIRIGHT?! So amazing!

And the sales didn’t stop there… By the next day, the total had reached $35,000!

So what if you sent a text, DM or follow-up email asking if a customer would like to check out a piece they commented on? Or suggest a gift for a loved one? Or show them something new you’re working on? Or just asked if they needed help?

What if YOU started that conversation?

All I’m sayin’ is to show up for your customers in a way that actually helps them.

Make Customers’ Lives Easy

Life gets so busy — seriously, who has the time anymore?

I was shopping in Soho when I experienced some real customer satisfaction.

It all started with a $1K+  rose gold jacket (yeah, I know… so much$$!!)

I just HAD to have it. But it felt way too expensive to invest in at the time.

The sales clerk I was working with offered to let me know when the price went down in a couple of weeks.

Fast forward to their 50% off sale and the clerk now had my phone number, email address, and a comfortable communication with me.

That meant that she could contact me whenever there were products she thought I’d be interested in.

She basically became my personal shopper. I’ve since invested so much into this shop — and she doesn’t even work there anymore!

This isn’t to broadcast my shopping habits, by the way…

This is to HIGHLIGHT that by making someone’s life a tinsey bit easier, you gain a lifelong customer.

Where Is Your Energy Going?

There’s a rule that forces even the best biz makers to really get down and focus on what matters.

It’s called the 75% rule.

It’s the one thing that’ll force you to stop and look at where you time and energy has been going.

If you aren’t making sales or converting customers into raving fans, then take a look at your day.

I like to write a list of tasks I have and things I’d like to accomplish by sun down.

Then I go back over that list and cross off anything that isn’t making me money.

I repeat:

Cross off anything that isn’t making money!

That includes administrative stuff you can hand off to an overseas virtual assistant.

And it means focusing 75% of your time on sales and marketing that’ll grow your business!

Make Money Within Minutes, Not Years

What else is stopping you from making money in your biz right now?

I think I’ve heard just about every reason or excuse…

Your website is down.

You don’t have a lot of followers.

Your jewelry “might be too expensive” for your audience.

Or you’re just feelin’ afraid. I hear ya!

Instead of listening to that worried voice in your head, why not try reaching out to your customers?

I watched a room full of our SOS members go from “I don’t want to bother anyone..” to raking in over $20,000 collectively, following my tips.

The first sale was within the first FIVE MINUTES.
