Every day, you enter the Digital world called ‘Internet’ and probably meet or rub shoulders with a few cyber bad guys – Hacker or Scammer.
As a server administrator that manages all your incoming email traffic, we do our best to keep your Inbox away from those bad guys.

Our post-office refers to major Spam databases and custom Anti Spam mechanism to block these Hacker and Scammer, but potentially-malicious emails somehow manage to slip through our filters with a very standard and common content in business communication.

Here’s how to spot them:

A – Attachment Scam

Direct Damage: *

Future Damage: *****

According to a published study, a gift-wrapped item influences the recipient to have a more favorable attitude towards opening the attachment.
When a recipient receives an email (from an unknown sender) that contains attachments such as PDF, Docs, etc, it can be an ill-intentioned email that baits the recipient to open it and download Malware without his or her awareness.

Suggestions:

– Make sure you trust the origin of the attachment, give the sender a call if possible.

– Scan with your updated Antivirus program if you really wish to open the attachment.

B – Bitcoin Blackmail Scam

Direct Damage: *****

Future Damage: *

As a summary, strangers threaten you in exchange for bitcoins using a template warning.

Suggestions:

C – Checkup Scam

Direct Damage: *

Future Damage: ****

Scammers attempt to send you an email that requests your confirmation on certain registration, login verification or system false alert such as mailbox full. It baits victims to click on a link to download certain malware or key in their details, and plan for a second attack.

Suggestions:

– If you did not register, ignore it.

– Check with your email service provider or vendor on the false alert.

D – Domain Scam

Direct Damage: ****

Future Damage: *

When you register a new domain, your personal information is published to the WHOIS directory, which is available to anyone.
Scammers collect these details and try to scam the domain owner with content such as domain expiry date or SEO submission that requires you to make additional payment.

Suggestions:

– Contact your registrar or the party that helps you register the domain immediately without clicking on any links inside the email.

E – E-Payment Scam

Direct Damage: *****

Future Damage: *

When your email account is compromised, scammers not only access your mailbox to read all your current emails, they will also create forwarder / filtering rules to monitor your email communication with your clients silently.
They wait patiently until the moment when you discuss payment details with your clients, and that’s the moment they jump into the email exchange (pretending they’re you) and offer the your client fraud bank account details. A fraud case takes place when the client deposits the payment to the scammer’s bank account.

Suggestions:

– Do not access your email account using unsecured network/devices.

– Change your email login regularly with a strong password.

– Access control panel and double check if there is any unknown forwarder/filtering rules.

– Call your clients directly to clarify the payment.

Evil comes in different forms!
If you’re worried you might communicate with a Hacker or Scammer who does not fit into the above categories, please feel free to contact our team at support@exabytes.sg

Everyone knows it is easy to have their servers attacked, or harmed by a malware attack, a DDoS attack or other security threats.

Now the question is, how can we avoid attacks targeted at Linux VPS and Servers?
Let us guide you with some basic practices to keep your server secure and defend against unknown security threats..

Check out some of the important practices:

1) Check cPanel version – As always, you are encouraged to check the cPanel version you are currently using. There are 3 ways to check it:

a) Access SSH and use cPanel command:  /usr/local/cpanel/cpanel -V

*Not sure how to access SSH? See HERE

b) Other than accessing using command, you can access SSH and view the version file to know your cPanel version: cat /usr/local/cpanel/version

c) Access WHM and view the version of cPanel via the WHM Dashboard.

2) Check if “Auto-Update” is enabled – Enable “Automatic” so that you can always get the latest updates. Simply follow the below sequence to enable it.

Log in WHM > Update Preferences > Daily Updates > Automatic

3) Install additional security features/plugins to protect your VPS/Server.

a) CloudLinux
CloudLinux essentially creates a virtual environment for each individual account and protect your server environment from symlink attack.

For the installation steps, please refer HERE:

Also, you can install CageFS (Part of CloudLinux) for additional protection.

CageFS allows the availability of safe only binaries to users while restricting users to see server configuration files.

For installation steps, please refer HERE

***CageFS will automatically detect and configure all necessary files for cPanel.

b)  Imunify360
Imunify360 offers a security suite that protects servers against a wide range of attacks. It integrates with cPanel & WHM, and provides reports to the system administrator on the server’s status.

Installation steps, please refer HERE

**If you are yet to get Imunify360, which can help you prevent attacks against your server, get it now HERE OR contact our Professional Sales Team at sales@exabytes.sg for the latest update/promotion.

c) Run Security Advisor to verify your current environment
This is a new feature provided by cPanel recently. It helps to verify and advise which application you should turn ON or OFF .

Login WHM >> Home >> Security Center >> Security Advisor

**As this is a new feature recently provided by cPanel, feel free to refer HERE for the official advice.

** Otherwise, contact your hosting support if you need any assistance on running Security Advisor.

4) Check your OS
Check the OS version that you are currently running. Remember cPanel CentOS 6 will reach end of support soon, and you should prepare to switch over to CentOS 7.

We encourage you to migrate to a server that runs on CentOS 7 before November 30, 2020.

For further assistance, please contact your Hosting Customer Service Team. Cheers!

From Left to Right: Tommir Haryanto (MWN CTO), Steven Haryanto (MWN COO), Dhiar Lukito Adhi (MWN Deputy CEO), Chan Kee Siak (Exabytes Group CEO).

April 11, 2019 – Penang, Malaysia – Exabytes Capital Group Sdn. Bhd. (“Exabytes”) today announced it has acquired Indonesia-based PT Master Web Network (“MWN”) including its fully-owned subsidiaries – PT Cyberdata Technology and PT Registrasi Nama Domain. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The acquisition was done through an Exabytes’ special purpose vehicle (SPV) company called Masterweb International Pte. Ltd.

MWN is the second company owned by Exabytes in Indonesia after it formed PT Exabytes Network Indonesia in 2017. Combining both Exabytes Network Indonesia and MWN, Exabytes now emerges as the largest web hosting provider in Indonesia with over 50,000 active paying clients.

Founded in 1998, MWN focuses on delivering website hosting services and other services including Domain Name, Cloud Hosting, Virtual Private Server and Managed Server. It is the top web hosting firm in Indonesia since 2004 based on number of customers, according to a ranking published by HostAdvice, a renowned web hosting information center. Meanwhile, Cyberdata Technology is a data center and it provides co-location services. Registrasi Nama Domain offers domain registration.

Chan Kee Siak, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Exabytes Capital Group said, “Exabytes helps small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grow their business online. We’ve been doing this in Indonesia since we set foot in 2017 by offering premium hosting and cloud services. As we grew we wanted to add low cost hosting as well so we could cater to a larger pool of customers in the country of over 200 million people. This is where we saw Master Web Network that has over 40,000 active paying customers, would make a good addition to our group of companies. With that, Exabytes Group in total is serving over 120,000 active clients.”

Exabytes will look into investing resources such as technology, automation and talent training into MWN in order to help it further accelerate its business and continue improving its service offerings in Indonesia.

Dhiar Lukito Adhi, Founder of PT Master Web Network commented, “This acquisition is of great importance to us. We’ve been impressed with Exabytes’ approach in helping SMEs grow their business online. Its wealth of expertise and valuable resources will be key to our business as we continue to work on capturing a larger customer base of local entrepreneurs in Indonesia.”

Southeast Asia is an important region for Exabytes. Besides Indonesia, the Company is making inroads in Singapore. Exabytes has forayed into Singapore’s web hosting services market when it incorporated Exabytes Network Singapore Pte. Ltd. in 2010 and then acquired a local company in 2014. Since then Exabytes has acquired several other companies in Singapore.

“2019 is going well for Exabytes. As part of our growth strategy, we are keeping a close check on the emergence of the digital economy within Southeast Asia, to discover new potential expansions,” Chan concluded.

  • Search engine friendly

Today, let us introduce these catchy domain extensions that are solely dedicated to the technology industry; the domain extensions for web developers, designers, engineers, website programmers, and tech and mobile application companies.

Check them out!

.DEV

.DEV is a top-level domain introduced by Google. It was primarily used by developers and designers for their local development environments. On March 1, 2019, Google made it open to the public, and now everyone can register one. Since .DEV is in a niche domain space that offers a higher level of security than normal domains, it is included on the HSTS preload list and requires HTTPS connection.

.TECH

.TECH is a generic top-level domain. As the name implies, the .tech domain is intended to be used by technology-focused websites. One of the biggest advantages of using .TECH is  Startup League supported by Radix, which provides you with exclusive marketing support in forms of event sponsorships at key tech events. Moreover, it also gives new startups a great opportunity to spread the word.

.IO

.IO is a country code top-level domain and it was initially reserved for British Indian Ocean Territory. Years later, the use of .IO domains started to pick up, and in 2003 it was generally used by technology companies as ‘IO’ is also an abbreviation for input/output in computer science. Having said that, there is no restrictions on .IO domain registrations, which means anyone is able to register one without a resident identity card. Google treats .IO domains as generic top-level domains so they will not specifically target a certain geographic region and it won’t affect your SEO in other countries.

.APP

.APP is a generic top-level domain introduced by ICANN in 2012. Next, Google purchased the exclusive right in 2015. Google then made it available to the public in May 2018. The .APP domain is obviously the first choice for mobile application companies or developers. Besides, Google requires HTTPS for all .APP websites, something similar to .DEV.
