June is finally here, and, though the weather isn’t looking too hopeful at the moment, we’re getting excited about summer! While warm weather may be delightful, it tends to come with a plethora of skin dilemmas - but we’ve put together a handy holiday shop so all the essentials are in one place!

Are you jetting off abroad any time soon? International flight rules mean that you can’t take liquids in containers over 100ml in your hand luggage - which could mean going without your favourite product if you’re travelling light! Luckily, we have travel-sized counterparts to all of our most popular skincare. Why not treat yourself to a mini version of your favourite serum or the face cream you can’t live without? Travelling to different climates can wreak havoc on your skin: varying levels of humidity, a sudden change in temperature, or a week of windy weather can all leave your skin feeling attacked, so it’s important to maintain your skincare routine.

If you’re stuck on where to start, we’ve put together a curated edit of travel-friendly products in our Summer Travel Kit. On the other hand, if you have tried-and-true picks, you can find them combined with complementary products in our carefully selected kits. Try our Balance & Protect Essentials if you’re worried that the change in air might cause breakout-prone skin to flare up, or our Organic Skincare Bestsellers for skin that glows. These also make fantastic gifts for loved ones and those just getting into natural skincare.

Popping off to different countries isn’t the only challenge our skin faces during the summer months, though. Increased exposure to UV rays means our skin is more prone to sun damage, and needs protection more than ever! Try out our new (reef-safe!) Climate Veil Tinted SPF20 for a dewy, perfected glow that’s combined with UVA and UVB protection. We recommend wearing an SPF all year round, but the longer days and summer picnics mean that it’s particularly essential in the coming months.

Then, there’s the issue of making sure your skin is in tip-top condition to be shown off in shorts and sleeveless tops. Luckily, we have a whole host of skin treats that will buff away any lingering dullness and leave you radiant. Start by rubbing our gently exfoliating Tropical Blossom Body Polish into legs and arms - or anywhere you feel your skin needs a boost! This uses organic sugar to smooth and rejuvenate skin, and smells heavenly to boot. Rinse off and follow with one of our delicious body washes.

Then, you have a choice: we’d always recommend moisturising after exfoliation, but there are so many options! For a bit of a boost to your summer glow, reach for our Sunless Glow Body Lotion, which builds a gradual golden tan without exposing you to harmful UV rays. Alternatively, smooth on some Tropical Blossom Organic Body Butter, which will enhance the scent from the polish and leave skin silky smooth. For skin prone to scars or stretch marks, our Skin Saviour Body Oil is a must-have, and moisturises skin whilst enhancing cellular turnover. If you’re more interested in a lotion than an oil, we have two delectable choices: African Orange boasts a scent of blood orange, vanilla, and hints of black pepper, while our Citrus Blend offers juniper berry, lime, lemon and basil. Who needs a G&T?

For the final step to your summertime bodycare routine, reach for our Satin Body Gloss - we think it’s absolutely essential for any summery event! Not only is it packed full of nourishing ingredients to keep skin healthy and happy; it has a shimmering addition that will make it your secret summer weapon: gold sparkle. It can be spritzed on your hair as well as your body, and gives a lit-from-within glow that catches sunlight perfectly. Whether you want a subtle shimmer down your legs or collar bones that catch the light, this summertime staple will have all eyes on you.

Once you’ve taken care of your body, it’s time to move on to the face. We trust that you know which products are best for your skin - if not, check out our blog for some ideas! - but one area we often neglect is our lips. Rapid changes between hot weather and air conditioned offices can mean that our lips end up cracked and dry, but we have a solution. Our vegan Lip Treat is great for chucking in a bag and smoothing on lips when you feel like they need a dose of hydration.

Best of all, almost all of our products can be found in travel-sized versions too, so you can look your best at home or away! What will you be stocking up on this year?

The benefits of yoga have long been talked about. The exercise reduces stress, stretches our bodies, strengthens our muscles, and gives us some much-needed time to re-centre ourselves. We all know why we should be doing it - but we also know how easy it is to feel daunted by the complex positions you see online. Good news - you don’t have to be able to twist yourself into a pretzel to feel the benefits of yoga. A few simple movements can set our bodies and minds back to a neutral state, and allow us to properly focus on what life throws at us. So where do you start?

Child’s Pose: Good If… You Need To Relieve Stress

If you’ve had a hectic day, or you haven’t slept well, chances are your stress levels are up. This can have a multitude of negative effects on our bodies, from dulled skin to lack of alertness. Why not relax into child’s pose? It’s deceptively simple, but has a huge impact, so is a great one to try if you’re not a seasoned yogi. Kneel on the floor (or a mat) with your knees apart and sit back on your heels. Then, sink forwards so that your forehead touches the floor (or as close as you can get), reaching your arms out in front of you. This position induces feelings of calm, and helps to induce a meditative state. As a bonus, it loosens up your hip flexors, which tighten up after a long stretch of sitting down - like a day at the office. Try holding this pose while you take ten slow, deep breaths, focusing just on how your body feels. You should be ready for a peaceful night’s sleep, or a calm day ahead, in no time!

Spine Twist: Good If… You’ve Been Sitting All Day

Have you ever stood up after a long period of sitting down and slightly staggered for your first few steps? Us too - it creeps up on you! The truth is, our bodies just aren’t designed to spend 8 hours a day sitting down. On top of getting up to walk to the water cooler, and going for a walk in your lunch break, there are some stretches that help to ease the pressure on our bodies. Try the spine twist, which is pretty much what it sounds like: sit with one leg over the other on the floor, inhale, and as you exhale twist your body around to one side. Inhale again in that position, and try to twist a little more. Then repeat on the other side! This is another one that’s super simple, but will release tension from your back. Try to use your stomach muscles to twist around, rather than forcing your body with your shoulders or arms. Don’t be surprised if you feel a few clicks - though if you don’t it doesn’t mean it’s not working!

The Plank: Good If… You Want to Strengthen Your Abdominals

If you thought yoga didn’t involve working your body a bit, you’d be wrong. One of the core moves (get it?) is the plank, aka. the stuff of P.E. nightmares. It’s really not as bad as you remember it though (promise!), and will strengthen your core to no end if you can do it regularly. A strong core is important for both yoga and daily life, so it wouldn’t go amiss to hold this move for a while whilst catching up on your favourite podcast. Ideally, though, you’d get into position - hands or forearms on the floor, balancing on the balls of your feet - and focus on holding your back and legs in one straight line from the shoulders downwards. If you can’t do this version, rest on your knees instead of your toes and hold that pose. 8-10 deep breaths later, you’ll be feeling zen - and maybe a little stronger!

Legs Up The Wall: Good If… Your Feet Get Swollen

Been on your feet all day? There’s a good chance that they’ll be swollen and inflamed - but thankfully there’s an easy solution. Try legs up the wall pose - which is exactly what it sounds like. This pose will drain fluid out of your feet and ankles, and lessen the swelling. It also gives you some time to yourself, to concentrate on your breathing - or to make a mental list of all the things you need to do tomorrow! If you’re a little more advanced, try switching to a shoulder stand instead, which will increase blood flow to your head whilst improving your core stability. Thanks to the extra blood in your head, you should feel your stress levels reducing and your concentration improving.

Here at Evolve, yoga is one of our favourite ways of connecting with our bodies. We sometimes get so used to a certain position - like being hunched over at a desk - that we forget it’s not how our bodies are supposed to feel. These easy positions give us time to concentrate on the way our bodies feel, and how we can make that better. One of our favourites is corpse pose which - despite the slightly ominous name - can really relax and calm your mind. You just lie down, slowly concentrating on relaxing individual parts of your body, and feel any tension slip away. It’s also a great one to have on hand if you regularly suffer from the inability to fall asleep, as it puts the brain into a zone of thinking about the physical reality of your body, rather than any external problems or worries. This is the pose causes people to nod off during class! Who said yoga had to be hard?

Here at Evolve, we try to do our best to be eco-friendly. That’s why our packaging is made out of either glass or 75% to 100% recycled PET plastic, both of which are fully recyclable. This means that buying from us reduces your overall plastic waste, and the more people choose brands that are eco-friendly, the more other companies will try to match their competition. We all know we should be using canvas bags (or at least reusing old plastic ones) for our shopping, but what else can we all do around the home to ensure we’re sending less plastic to landfill and out into our oceans?

We’ll start with skincare, because it’s what we know best! If you use cotton pads to remove your makeup, or to swipe some of our lovely Liquid Crystal 2-in-1 Micellic Cleanser across your face, chances are you’ve noticed that those cotton pads come in single-use plastic bags. Why not swap them out for the reusable kind instead? There are many types on the market, ranging from organic cotton to a blend of cotton and muslin. You can even make your own! Then simply use the pads as you normally would, and chuck them in the washing machine whenever you’re putting a load on. This one will save you money, too: in the long run, buying reusable cotton pads (alongside nappies, etc.) works out significantly cheaper than the single-use variety.

Talking of washing machines, another huge source of plastic pollution is, sadly, our clothes. Many contain plastic microfibers that slip out when washed, so even if you hang on to them for years then donate them to a charity shop (which is what we recommend!), every time you wash them a little more plastic drains away into the ocean. While the best option would be to stop making and buying clothes that contain plastic, sometimes that just isn’t feasible - and there are plenty of plastic-containing clothes already in circulation! Instead, why not invest in something like a Guppy Friend Washing Bag? You put your clothes in it before you wash them, and it catches all the plastic fibres that escape from the garments. Easy!

Going back to saving money alongside saving the Earth, let’s talk about reusable water bottles and keep cups. We have a feeling no one would be able to pry our morning coffee from us if they tried, but don’t worry; we’re not trying to tell you to give up your hot drink habit. Instead, invest in a keep cup that you can carry around with you - there are thousands of different designs, including a collapsible iteration that is perfect for chucking in a bag. All the coffee shops we’ve come across are more than happy to use yours instead of a disposable cup, which inevitably comes with a plastic lid. And don’t get us started on straws! Ditto to reusable water bottles: not only do they look significantly more stylish than the crumpled plastic variety, but you can also pick and choose a model that works best for you.

Rosehip oil, which is also known as rosehip seed oil, is an old skincare staple - but that doesn’t mean it’s outdated or that it can be replaced by trendier modern counterparts. This timeless oil sinks into skin, providing bountiful benefits: read on to find out why it’s one of our go-to ingredients!

Rosehip seed oil contains high levels of essential fatty acids like linoleic acid. These work to strengthen and reinforce the skin barrier, which helps to lock in moisture and contains nourishing ingredients. Additionally, it keeps out external pollutants, keeping damage away from the deeper layers of your skin. These pollutants include things like UV rays and airborne particles like smoke. Both of which provoke free radicals into attacking your skin, which causes wrinkles and other skin damage.

Interestingly, it’s not only those with dry skin who should reach for rosehip seed oil: the linoleic acid content is also useful when battling breakouts. Rosehip oil is non-comedogenic, and one of the principal causes of acne is underproduction of linoleic acid in sebum. Often, this results in an excess of sebum as the skin tries to overcompensate, leading to both oily skin and breakouts. Adding an ingredient like rosehip oil into your routine therefore helps to rebalance sebum production, and should lead to calmer skin. On top of the linoleic acid content, rosehip oil is packed with Vitamin E, polyphenols, and anthocyanin, all of which can help to reduce inflammation. This makes it a great remedy when you have an active breakout, as you’ll find blemishes become less red and inflamed. Tackling both current and future breakouts? That’s a win in our book!

These fatty acids and antioxidants can be useful in other ways, too. They help to boost cell regeneration, which means that you’ll have newer, glowier and plumper skin cells on the surface - hooray! Combined with the vitamin A (aka. retinol) and C found in rosehip oil, both of which are natural exfoliants, your skin will be glowing in no time. Both vitamins are also used in the production of collagen, an abundance of which leaves your skin bouncy and firm. Rosehip oil has also been shown to combat an enzyme which breaks down existing collagen. Hello plump skin! All of these features mean that rosehip oil could also help to reduce the appearance of scars and fine lines over time as skin regenerates.

Despite being an oil, rosehip is known as a ‘non-greasy’ oil - that is, it will sink into your skin easily and not just rest on top. This means it’s a fantastic moisturiser for oily skin types - but normal and dry skin can benefit too, thanks to the hydrating and replenishing benefits, especially if you’re older or your skin is prone to fine lines.

So, what’s the best way to use rosehip oil in your routine? We’d recommend smoothing on a few drops of our Miracle Facial Oil  after cleansing in the evenings. The bio-retinol from the vitamin A will get to work on your skin during the night, and you’ll wake up with smoother, calmer skin. You can use the oil during the day, too, but don’t expect your skin to look completely matte. In fact, you can use this to your benefit: mix a drop in with your foundation and dot along your cheekbones for a lit-from-within glow!

Don’t banish the benefits to just your face, though: our Skin Saviour Body Oil  combines rosehip oil with baobab and mandarin essential oils, which nourish, improve skin’s elasticity, and boosts skin’s regeneration. As a bonus, it has a delicious natural mandarin scent, which helps to turn moisturising from a chore into a pampering experience. We recommend smoothing some on post-shower when the skin is still a little damp - you’ll be amazed at the difference!

Today we’re catching up with Laura, the founder and CEO of Evolve Organic Beauty. You can usually find Laura busy in the studio coming up with ideas for new products, talking to press and bloggers or getting stuck into a good spreadsheet.

Name: Laura Rudoe

Role:  Founder and CEO

Tell us a little about a typical day for you in the Evolve Studio:

Every day is different for me! One day I am hand blending a new fragrance and the next I am meeting bloggers at a PR event. The variety is one of the reasons I really love my job.

What is your favourite part of your role?

My favourite part of the role is when I get to speak to customers and hear about the impact that our products have had on them! I love hearing about how our delicious Evolve products have put a smile on someone's face, or about the benefits they’ve had on someone’s skin, it always makes me happy to hear that we’ve made someone’s day a little bit better.

Tell us something about you that we don’t already know:

I love to sing and in my spare time I perform in a local mixed choir called Strictly Acapella!

What’s your skin type?

I have really sensitive and reactive combination skin. From my teens into my thirties I suffered from blemishes, which was a huge motivator in my adoption of a natural lifestyle, and is what led to my interest in developing natural skincare products that would help other people with their skin.

What’s your favourite Evolve product?

This is tricky because they are all like my children, it is impossible to pick a favourite! The one I use most often however, is the Gentle Cleansing Melt, I absolutely love the way it makes my skin feel and the gorgeous organic Rose Otto essential oil fragrance.

Tell us your favourite beauty tip:

For sensitive skin, less is more! I only cleanse my skin once a day and use a face mask once a week. I like to pick a few good products that I know my skin loves to keep my skin happy.

Hands up who grew up thinking exfoliating meant scrubbing your skin until it was raw, and was an essential part of your skincare routine? Well, essential it may be, but there is simply no need to make your skin uncomfortable whilst doing it (put down that baking soda concoction!). To start you off on your exfoliation journey, you have just one decision to make: physical or chemical exfoliation?

Exfoliation is a key part in skincare because it removes dead skin cells from the surface. These cells dull skin, clog pores, and can even cause your face to appear flaky and rough. Not so nice! A gentle exfoliation once or twice a week means that these dead cells are tackled, leaving the fresh skin underneath to glow. As we age, our cell turnover rate slows down, leaving those dead skin cells on the surface for longer. This means exfoliation is even more important through the years!

If you’re new to exfoliation, the obvious choice seems to be a physical exfoliant. These have been around for decades, and use a scrubbing agent like sugar to buff away the top layer of dead skin. However, these can be too harsh for some skin types, though tolerance varies hugely, depending on what the ingredients are. One of the best things about physical exfoliants is that you’re likely to see a marked difference immediately after rinsing it off. Physical exfoliants work solely on the top layer of skin, and make a fantastic treatment option for when you need an instant fix, or have been neglecting your skincare routine for a while. Our Radiant Glow Organic Face Mask is the perfect option for this: the coconut shell powder gently polishes the skin while the other ingredients get to work on your face. Cacao helps to protect and hydrate the skin, and boosts rejuvenation and healing of skin cells - meaning a speedier cell turnover and fewer dead skin cells to start with! Combined with sweet almond oil, which moisturises skin and nourishes thanks to the high vitamin A,E, and B content, this mask is a bit of a wonder product - and it smells just heavenly!

Option two is chemical exfoliation and we know: it sounds all kinds of scary! We promise it isn’t: it’s just a different method of removing dead skin cells, and can actually be gentler on your skin than physical exfoliants. Chemical exfoliation tends to make use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs), or fruit enzymes, and can penetrate deeper into the skin. This means that, while you might not see a difference straight away, these treatments work hard to produce and maintain skin that glows constantly, rather than just in the hours after a treatment. Our Miracle Organic Face Mask makes use of natural AHAs from a range of sources: glycolic acid comes from sugar cane, and is combined with lactic, citric, malic, and tartaric acids from bilberry, orange, lemon, and sugar maple. Sounds good enough to eat! While physical exfoliation relies on the manual removal of skin cells, chemical exfoliation breaks down the ‘glue’ that bonds cells together - making it easy to wipe away the dead cells. This has one of the same benefits as physical exfoliation, in that it’ll make your skin smooth and glowing, and won’t irritate skin that’s sensitive to scrubs. In true Evolve fashion, we’ve combined these AHAs with some other fabulous ingredients, so that you can make the most of your skincare: Peruvian maca stimulates cell renewal, so you’ll have newer skin cells on the surface more frequently, which leads to glowing and plumped skin.

But there’s more! Did you think exfoliation was just for your face? Dead skin cells build up all over your body, and chances are your limbs could do with some scrubbing, too! Physical exfoliants are a good choice for your body, as the skin tends to be tougher and less delicate than that on your face, so can withstand the manual scrubbing. Exfoliating can lead to a reduction in conditions like keratosis pilaris (tiny bumps on your arms), as well as giving you a smoother shave with fewer ingrown hairs, and boosting skin’s luminosity. An important facet of exfoliation is that it allows any subsequent products to sink into skin more effectively, so you get the most out of your serums, moisturisers and spritzes! Next time you have an event coming up, why not try our Tropical Blossom Body Polish on your legs, then smooth on some of our Sunless Glow Body Lotion for a touch of tan? Alternatively, get scrubbing your upper body and spritz some of our Satin Body Gloss along your collarbones for a subtle, summery glow? The body polish will prep your skin, so you’ll see the full benefit of all the moisturising, nourishing ingredients you slather on afterwards.

So, which should you choose: can we pick both?! It really comes down to preference - some people prefer physical exfoliation because of the encouraging scrubbing feeling, while some feel that chemical exfoliation is perfect for their more sensitive skin. We recommend using a combination: using a chemical exfoliator regularly (1-2 times per week) can brighten and smooth skin in the long run, while physical exfoliators are ideal for a quick fix before a big day. And don’t forget the rest of your body, especially now that summer (aka getting-your-legs-out-season) is coming up: dull skin, begone!

We love our skin, but we love our planet too - and sometimes, it’s hard to find earth-friendly skincare options.

Our new launch was a tricky one for us - we wanted to get that balance just right. UV radiation is responsible for 80% of visible ageing, so it’s something we’re keen to avoid! On the other hand, ingredients in traditional sun creams - especially Octinoxate and Oxybenzone - cause significant damage to the planet, as well as to our bodies. We were keen to find a natural alternative that protects our planet alongside protecting our skin.

How do conventional sun creams harm the planet?

Coral reefs are one of the world’s greatest wonders, and they’re found in warm, tropical seas. Those tropical seas come along with wonderfully warm weather - which is great news for holidaymakers! Sadly, the sun cream often used by those of us keen to soak up the sunshine can be incredibly damaging to coral reefs: around 90% of SPFs on the market leak into the sea and end up bleaching the coral and leading to their eventual death.

The reefs aren’t just pretty to look at, though: most scientists reckon that the ocean is the source for about half the world’s oxygen production. Coral reefs also house a diverse variety of ecosystems that can’t flourish when their homes are dying. Disrupting these ecosystems means that the balance of the oceans’ many food chains is altered, and many organisms are affected.

So how do we avoid that?

Lots of research! We’ve used non-nano mineral-based zinc oxide, which provides a physical barrier to both UVA and UVB rays. It leaves you with a subtly dewy finish, and is best suited to normal and dry skin types - but if you’re after a more matte look, just dust a layer of powder on over the top.

Anything else?

Yes! We’ve combined the effective sun protection of the Zinc Oxide with nourishing, anti-ageing ingredients, making the  Climate Veil Tinted SPF 20 fantastic for your skin as well. Hyaluronic acid hydrates (a must in hot temperatures!) while the high levels of polyphenols in the Lingonberry Stem Cells battle free radicals, which cause skin damage. Lingonberry helps to decrease skin irritation, and reduces the appearance of any wrinkles or age spots that have already emerged. On top of that, they bolster skin’s firmness, and add a dose of hydration! Combined with Cacay Oil, which repairs and supports the skin barrier, your skin will be bouncy and hydrated, as moisturising ingredients are locked into skin. As always, our packaging is made from recycled materials and is fully recyclable, too.

Try our Climate Veil SPF 20 here.
