What are the different types of Environmental Pollution?

When the pollutants get entry into the environment which causes harmful effects not only to the living organism but to the environment also, this is called as environmental pollution. These pollutants can be present in any form such as substances or energy in the environment but when found in excessive amount can contaminate the environment. Pollutants or contaminants play a vital role in polluting the environment. The pollutants hamper our eco-system by interfering the natural activities of the environment. The day by day development across the globe is increasing the level of pollution in the environment. The environmental pollution has many hazardous effects on mankind and on our planet itself. In this article, we will discuss the different types of environmental pollution so that we can find out solutions to get rid of these pollutions.

Different Types of Environmental Pollution

There are many different kinds of environmental pollution such as air, water, noise, light, etc. The rate of environmental pollution through all these means is increasing quite rapidly which is a situation of great worries. The condition of our planet is very alarming. It is very important that we know the problem in detail to find out a good solution to the problem. Hence, let’s discuss the different forms of environmental pollution to find out the preventions to save the environment and our planet.

  • Air Pollution

Air pollution is one of the major kinds of environmental pollution that results in extremely hazardous effects on mankind and environmental as well. The rate of air pollution is increasing day by day with the increase of urbanization & industrialization. When harmful substances such as dust, various harmful gases (such as SO2, CO, NO2, etc.), smoke, etc. released in the atmosphere, the air gets contaminated automatically. Both human and natural activities cause air pollution. For example – emission of pollutants from factories are human activities that cause air pollution, on the other hand, forest fire causes air pollution which is a natural activity.

  • Industrial Pollution

When the industrial waste, chemicals, toxins, contaminants, etc. are releasing in the environment by means of air, water or land it causes industrial pollution. The air gets polluted through industrial fumes, water gets polluted through deposal of contaminants in water bodies and waste from industries get accumulate in landfill making the environment polluted. Industrial pollution may cause an imbalance in the ecosystem, hampers the health of plants, animals & humans and disturbs the ecology of water bodies, etc.

  • Water Pollution

Water is our primary need. We cannot even think our life without water but unfortunately the water bodies such as rivers, oceans, lakes, groundwater, etc. are contaminating at an alarming rate. Water gets polluted when the contaminants such as harmful chemicals, industrial wastes, fertilizers, etc. entered into the water bodies. Water pollution is mainly caused by various unhealthy activities of human beings such as dumping industrial waste, sewage disposal, dumping wastes, mining, oil spills, etc. These pollutants affect the eco-system underwater by spoiling the life of numerous plant & animal species underwater. Water pollution not only harms aquatic life but affects the entire food chain directly or indirectly.

  • Noise Pollution

The high-pitched sound that seems unpleasant to our ear causes noise pollution. When the intensity of sound crosses 85 dB it causes discomfort to us both mentally & physically.  It also comes under types of environmental pollution as noise pollution not only affects human health but is also harmful to animals. It may cause hypertension, blood pressure problem, increase in stress level, anxiety, etc. to human, whereas in the case of animal’s noise pollution causes reproductive problems, breeding problems, production issues, etc. In some severe cases of noise pollution, an individual can permanently lose hearing power. There may be several reasons for noise pollution such as loudspeaker, disco, marriage functions, industrial noise, etc.

  • Land Pollution

When the quality of Earth’s surface decreases it is called as land pollution. Land pollution is majorly caused by human activities. The main causes of land pollution are improper disposal of wastes, garbage, chemical products, etc. Fertilizers, pesticides, toxins, etc. released from factories and as agricultural wastes also cause land pollution. The main causes of land pollution include rapid construction, mineral exploitation, acid rain, chemicals used in agriculture, etc. Land pollution eventually hampers the health of living organisms.

  • Thermal Pollution

The release of extreme heat in the environment is called thermal pollution. The major reasons of thermal pollution are vehicles & industries or factories. The excessive heat released from vehicles & factories may cause unwanted changes in nature. Thermal pollution is also polluting the water bodies on the Earth’s surface. In short thermal pollution is also a reason for water pollution. Earth’s temperature is increasing day by day due to thermal pollution and eventually causing climate change, global warming, wildlife extinction, etc.

Land and soil pollution in types of environmental pollution
  • Soil Pollution

Soil pollution occurs when unwanted toxins and chemicals get dissolve soil. The pesticides or insecticides used for agriculture makes the soil unfit by absorbing the nutrients. Deforestation is another reason for soil pollution. Soil degradation (through excessive grazing, excessive farming, excessive mining activities, etc.) also causes soil pollution. Soil pollution is contaminating the surface of the earth and hence the environment is also getting polluted.

  • Light Pollution

Light pollution occurs when the artificial light is used excessively that enlightens the skies at night. The cycle of natural activities gets upset due to light pollution. As a result of light pollution, wildlife is also getting affected by causing an unnecessary nuisance. The light pollution is mainly observed in metropolitan & busy cities.

  • Radioactive Pollution

Well, radioactive pollution caused due to irresponsible disposal of nuclear waste, unwanted upset happening in the nuclear plants, etc. Radioactive pollution is termed as the most hazardous pollution due to its permanent effects on living organisms & environment too. Radioactive pollution may cause blindness, skin allergy, infertility, etc.

If you can think of more types of environmental pollution, reply in the comment box we will update it. In the meantime, share this article with your friends.

WHY ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT?

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela as said above is perhaps been proven by many other scholars around the world which is why we need to educate our selves in order make the world a better place to live in.

Around the world there have been a lot of very famous environment activists such as Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Journalist, Environmental Activist) Leonardo DiCaprio (Film Actor, Environmental Activist), Thom Yorke (Songwriter, Environmental Activist), Theodore Roosevelt (U.S President, Military Leader, Environmental Activist), etc. to give positive impact on Importance of environmental education in our world.

why environmental education is important?

When we talk about education, it is very important to understand the importance of environmental education too, let me remind you that we are responsible how we shape our environment because only by creating awareness about the harmful effects of environmental damage can help us build a safe and secure future for our children.

When we are educated about the environment, we must identify our responsibility as global citizens and make a positive change for our planet earth which will help us utilize our resources more efficiently and without harming our environment as well.

Let’s understand some of the important measures taken to promote environmental education – The National Environment Policy Act (NEPA) is one such law that is enacted by the United States of America which promotes environment enhancement, it was formed on 1st January 1970. Since then 100 nations have joined to form the national environmental policies as done by the (NEPA).

These measures have led the Federal Agencies to set an example of making national highways routes as the shortest possible between two points. NEPA had the most useful environment outcome when all the executive federal agencies were asked to prepare environmental assessments and environmental impact statements report. These gave the accurate effects of proposed Federal Agencies actions.

In my perspective, it is very important for the educational institutes to start teaching students how to safeguard our environment and all the things related to it. Below are some of the beneficial points of imparting Environmental Education to our children-

  • Educational Achievements – By providing environmental education to students they will engage problem-solving techniques of the outer world and which can also be applied to their subjects to understand a particular problem by implying outdoor environmental solutions.
  • Health Benefits – Environmental Education gives students a new meaning to explore mother nature and see and resolve the issues which are harmful to the environment and this will also help them in maintaining their own health by doing physical work and their bodies will be immune from some serious health issues such as short-sightedness, obesity and in some cases even lack of concentration.
  • Future proof planning – This is one of the issues which we need to deal with because if we don’t educate our kids about the hazardous effects of environmental damage there will be no future of the world. Education in this field will give students a new meaning to problem-solving techniques as they will solve the real-world problems and they will also be thinking beyond just to make things work for today and investigate the situation carefully and take preventive measures in the future for environmental safeguarding.
  • Managing teams – Working in teams is another example of Environment education as it gives kids a new meaning to solve a certain problem by doing teamwork. This will also bring out the leadership qualities in them as they will have to lead the path for their team to stop people in producing garbage and spread awareness to others as well about the use of non-plastic goods for the betterment of the environment.
  • Producing Environment Activist – It is about time we educate students to take this initiative as a major part of their life by encouraging them to become an activist for the environment and stop others from harming the environment by creating platforms for the awareness for the need of Environmental Education in each and every part of the society.
  • Improving concentration – Nowadays there are a lot of distractions in a society which diverts the attention of students from their education to some other side. By educating them about the environment they will be able to focus more on the real problems of the world as they will be the ones analyzing and solving the problems of the environment to promote more greenery everywhere.
  • Benefiting the Schools – It’s a very beneficial plan for the schools as well because it will help them in promoting real-life learning and understanding their surroundings which is a new breakthrough in learning any situation better and more easily.
  • Participating in Outdoor activities – This is perhaps very useful for the health of children because it has been proven that kids who have a green playground in their school premises are more likely to get less sick and be more active and energetic in daily life.
  • Promoting New Educating methods – Environmental Education is more of the task which is to be done every day by students as well as teachers which will encourage them to take outdoor practice as how to conserve the environment and learn new innovative techniques to help them understand conservation more easily.
  • Cutting back on expenses – Learning how to protect the environment will require students to participate in maintaining the school as well which will be beneficial for the school as it will reduce the maintenance cost of the surrounding which will automatically cut back on the annual cost of overall expenses.

These are just some of the benefits if we educate students about why environmental education is important! but we should educate the whole world about the beneficial factors of it.

The Importance of environmental education

Below are some of the benefits of the whole world if we adopt these techniques-

  • Encouraging more institutions – If more organizations will adopt environmental education as their priority then there will more kids as well as adults who will help in conserving the environment and also help in creating more awareness amongst others.
  • Adapting technology – There are various measures which are used by technology and advancement in conserving the environment and also help in promoting huge platforms such as the online campaign to create awareness on this matter, which will bring people together on environment education promotion.
  • Promoting Sustainability -Environmental Education helps in building the natural world gives knowledge and method to solve complex environmental issues which also gives advancement to productive economies and harmony among communities.

In the end, its all up to us how much are we willing to save the environment around the world because if we don’t start to educate ourselves and our children according to the need of safeguarding our society then we will be too late to give our future generations “a future” of their own and world as we know it will change forever.

World Refugee Day

World Refugee day – An Overview

Refugees are basically a result of horrifying violence, persecution, poverty, drought, war, conflicts and various other events that occur in various countries across the world. Refugees are the people who have a very tough life as they have been forced to run away from their land, homes, people under the threat of war, persecution, conflict etc.

According to the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention, “A refugee is someone who fled his or her home and country owing to “a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion”.

World refugee day is a day celebrated to honor the courage of the refugees and also to spread public awareness about the plight of the refugees worldwide.  It is the day to celebrate the resilience and strength of the refugees who have lost their families, homes, their people and are forced to be displaced from their own land.

According to a report from Refugee Council countries like Pakistan, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Kenya, Turkey, Iran etc. are the top countries for refugees. The largest refugee camp is hosted by Dadaab, Kenya. Although, there are various reasons like poverty, natural disaster, war, persecution etc. behind the displacement of people but war and violence is the biggest reason these days.

The war and violence in Syria is the live example that has increased the number of refugees in the world in the past two years. The maximum number of refugees comes from countries like Syria, Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia etc.  and these are basically the survivors of the violence and war in their country.

This is the reason that United Nation announces a day i.e. 20th June to remind people around the globe to support and rebuild the life of refugees. The motto of celebrating this day is to honor the spirit and strength of the millions of the refugees.

World Refugee Day History

World Refugee Day was declared an international event when the United Nations General Assembly passed a Resolution 55/76 on 4th December 2000. The resolution was passed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the UN Refugee Convention, 1951 relating to the status of the refugees. The first World Refugee Day was observed on 20th June 2001 and since then it was celebrated as a global event with a particular theme each year.

“Prior to 2000, there were several countries like Africa and few other that used to celebrate their refugee day on different dates.  United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is a UN program that works for the protection and resettlement of the refugees”.

Our solar system has eight planets and Earth is one of the planets among these. All these planets revolve around the Sun in their own orbits. Each planet looks different when you see the satellite views of it. The planets not only are different from each in terms of composition & size but it looks different from each other in terms of colors as well. For example- Mars looks red, Moon looks ashy grey, Saturn has a yellow appearance, Sun appears brilliant white and our Earth looks like a blue marble. The mother Earth is called a blue planet due to its blue color appearance from the outer surface but that’s not it, we will understand in detail Why Earth is called Blue Planet?

Why Earth is called Blue Planet? Why is the Earth called Blue Planet?

Most of us are curious to know why the Earth is called a blue planet. A general statement about the blue appearance of Earth from outer surface is that “The Earth has almost 70% water on its surface due to which it looks blue in color”.  Well, if you look at the images of Earth, most of its part looks blue which are the oceans present on Earth’s surface, whereas some other part looks brown or green which is actually the continents and the poles of Earth looks like white caps due to ice.

However, the blue color of the planet may vary depending on the depth of the oceans. For example- If you take a look at the close picture of Earth’s surface, it looks like light blue color at the area around the continents, whereas the deep areas of oceans look deep blue in color.

Do you know that the ocean looks blue due to the reflection of the sky because the sky is blue in color? The sky appears blue in color because our atmosphere disperses blue light (which is of shorter-wavelength) quite efficiently as compared to red or orange light (which is of longer-wavelength). This is why the sky appears blue in the day time because blue light with shorter wavelength gets scattered in all directions.

The oceans also look blue in color during day time due to the same reason. The ocean contains water in huge amount and the water molecules present in the ocean also absorb a certain wavelength of light. Water molecules also find easy to absorb blue light as it has shorter wavelengths, hence the ocean appears blue in color. In fact, if you click a picture inside water, it will appear completely bluish in color. For this reason, the oceans and seas appear blue in color, hence the Earth is called a blue planet because almost 3/4th of Earth’s surface is covered with oceans & seas.

Why Earth looks blue from space?

Well, a common factor we already discussed above is that the Earth looks blue from outer space due to oceans. This is not the only factor that affects the color of the Earth’s surface but there are some other factors also that make the Earth appear like a blue dot. From outer space, the Earth looks like a blue ball. These are the factors that play an important role in the blue color of Earth.

  • Water content on Earth’s surface

The Earth has extremely hot red heat under its crust and the top outer surface is covered with water. The Earth’s surface has many oceans and seas starting from the Arctic Ocean to the Southern Ocean. These oceans & seas cover almost 70% of Earth’s surface and the remaining 30% is covered with land. It means that almost 70% of Earth’s surface appears blue from outer space & the leftover 30% looks greenish-brownish. This is the reason why Earth looks blue from outer space.

  • The color of the water content

As of now, we had known that the Earth appears blue from outer space but now we will discuss why water is blue in color. Water has the property of absorbing most of the colors of the light spectrum present in the Earth’s atmosphere. The oceanic water on Earth’s surface radiates blue in the spectrum that gives it the blue color. If the oceans have been radiating any other color (for example red) then the Earth’s surface would look alike that color like red. This is why the continents do not look blue for the same reason, it looks brown or green.

  • Dispersing in the ambiance

The composition of Earth’s atmosphere mainly contains two gases- nitrogen & oxygen. The molecules of these two gases present in the atmosphere absorb, disperse and radiate various lights. The lights with longer wavelengths such as red, yellow, orange etc. do not get affected much by the atmospheric gases & does not get absorbed as well. On the other hand, the blue light (with a shorter wavelength) gets absorbed and scattered by the atmospheric gases which create the blue sky we see daily. This blue light cannot be seen from outer space but plays an important role in the blue appearance of the Earth’s surface. Similarly, during the night the atmospheric gases could not connect with sunlight, hence the sky looks black in color.

  • Few other contradictions

If you look at the Earth’s surface from outer space it will look blue due to the presence of sunlight. On the other hand, if you are orbiting the Earth, it will appear black in some parts where it is experiencing night. The reason for appearing the Earth black is the absence of sunlight during the night, whereas during the night the stars look much brighter and the lands look dark blue due to artificial sources of lights.

In the meantime, share this  “earth the blue planet essay” with your kids to make them understand about our mother Earth.

Causes of Water Pollution

We all know that water is an essential element of our life. We cannot live without water. Water is the basic need to perform our daily activities such as drinking, bathing, washing, cooking etc. Water is not only used to fulfill our domestic needs but industrial requirements as well. In short, we cannot imagine our life without water.

Almost 70% of Earth’s surface is covered with water which makes it a great natural resource for us. Unfortunately, we all have contributed a lot to contaminate this natural resource to an extreme level that the water contains Earth’s surface has become a poisonous puddle. The water bodies have to swallow everything we dump in it starting from plastics to chemical disposals. In simple terms, the contamination of water in any form is known as water pollution.

Presently there are many environmental issues which the Earth is going through, out of which water pollution is one of the big issues. The property of water allows most of the pollutants to dissolve in it quite easily and thus it contaminates very easily. Water pollution is a big problem for the Eco-system of marine life. It is very important to find out the solution to tackle water pollution and for that first of all, we need to know the causes of water pollution. You can check out the main causes of water pollution as discussed below.

Causes of water pollution
  • Urban development at a faster rate

In the past few decades, urban development is going on quite rapidly. People have started building huge constructions such as apartments, shopping complexes, roads, industries etc. just for the sake of development. These constructions are eventually spoiling the environment in various ways such as water pollution.

The industries are dumping its chemical wastes in different water bodies such as oceans, rivers, lakes etc. Industrial wastes have become one of the biggest threats to these water bodies. Not only the chemical wastes of factories are polluting the water contains present on Earth but water is getting polluted in many other ways directly or indirectly linked to urban development. For example- chemicals or detergents drained from houses, toxins from highway runoffs washed in rivers or groundwater along with rainwater, soil erosion through deforestation for urban development etc.

  • Dumping of Radio-active wastes

We all know that radioactive wastes are very hazardous for our health as well as for the environment. Highly concentrated radioactive wastes can cause severe health issues such as cancer that ultimately can result in the death of an individual. There are many companies that discharge their radioactive wastes into the ocean and contaminate the water culture of oceans. The oceanic currents carry these radioactive wastes with them to other parts across the globe.

  • Inappropriate sewage disposal

As the world population is increasing day by day, simultaneously the sewage disposal has become a big issue. The inappropriate ways of sewage disposal are increasing the chances of diseases connected to water. The sewage is disposed into oceans either indirect ways or indirect ways.

According to the theories, approx 90% of sewage wastes contains water and there is also a natural substance present in sewage which can easily be decomposed by the environment. Sewage also contains various chemical substances such as paper, plastic, viruses, pharmaceutical products etc. and when these substances mix with water can cause various diseases such as typhoid, hepatitis, cholera etc.

  • Water pollution through oil spills

Most of the oil spills occur due to accidental incidents of tankers in oceans. These accidents release a huge amount of oil spills in oceanic water. The oil spills affect the oceanic Eco-system causing hazardous effects. It affects the lives of millions of animal and plant species underwater.

  • Use of harmful fertilizers for agriculture

As the world population is increasing rapidly, hence the demand for agricultural products is also increasing day by day. To fulfill the increasing demand for agricultural products, the farmers have started using fertilizers to increase the production of these products. These fertilizers contain many toxic chemicals and when these toxins come in contact with water results in algal blooms. Due to algal blooms, the oxygen level starts increasing in the water which causes the death of innocent plant and animal species underwater.

Water pollution || What are the causes of water pollution || Video for kids - YouTube

  • Disposal of plastics in the Oceans

Plastic has become a major part of our lifestyle today. It has become a vital part of our daily activities starting from our home to the office. Plastic products are very light in weight and can easily float with the waves. Most of the time, plastic enters in water bodies through dumping of wastes in rivers, oceans, lakes etc.

Plastic is a non-biodegradable material and it takes many years to decompose. The plastic has become a big threat to marine life and a big issue for the environment too. It hampers the life of millions of water animals and plant species. Plastic is as harmful as other chemicals disposed of in oceans.

  • Discharge of Industrial Wastes

Industrial waste is one of the biggest reasons for the emerging causes of water pollution. Industrial wastes such as mercury, lead, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Cadmium, Tributyltin etc. disposed of in water bodies affects the ecosystem of water quite badly. The water animals are affecting with these industrial wastes and also cause the brutal death of thousands of water animal species. When small water animals consume these disposed chemical wastes and these small animals are consumed by other big water animals and so on. The entire food chain gets affected in this way which is a big environmental issue to deal with.

  • Water pollution through mining

Mining also causes water pollution. The process of extracting minerals under the surface of Earth’s crust is known as mining. These minerals contain many harmful chemicals when extracted in raw form. These harmful chemicals when mixed with water cause hazardous effects on marine life.

These were some of the major causes of water pollution, can you suggest solutions to it? You are welcome to add some in the comment box. Please share it with your kids to make them understand it better.

Earth is the only planet where life is possible and comprises of an atmosphere, ecosystem and various land formations that are necessary for the survival. Earth is 70% covered by water and remaining part is covered by land. 1/5th of the earth’s land is covered with deserts. Every continent on this earth has a desert and every desert has its own ecosystem which is known as Desert ecosystem.

Desert Ecosystem Characteristics WHAT IS A DESERT ECOSYSTEM?

Before going through the details about Desert Ecosystem let’s understand what is ecosystem first-

An ecosystem is a community of all the living organism and non-living organisms interacting with each other in a specific area. Living organisms include all the organisms, plants and animals whereas non-living organisms include the physical environment that comprises air, water, sun, atmosphere, earth, climate etc.

In simple terms, an ecosystem is a setting where all the living and non-living components interact in a physical environment.

Coming to deserts…

When we hear the word ‘desert’ the very first thing that strikes our minds is a big barren, abandoned and dry land without plants covered with sand. A desert can be hot and cold both.

Desert is one of the most dried land areas on this planet that receives very little precipitation annually. It is a land with very less rainfall throughout the year measured less than 50 cm a year.

Desert ecosystem is the driest ecosystem of the earth and this is the reason it has less vegetation and less diversity of life. It is one of the parts of the terrestrial ecosystem. The plants and animals of the desert ecosystem have mastered the art of survival in harsh conditions. A desert ecosystem is basically devoid of any rainfall or precipitation.

In short desert, the ecosystem is the community of living and non-living organisms living together and interacting in an environment which seems to be abandoned. A Desert ecosystem is the interaction between both the Biotic and Abiotic components of the environment.

 DESERT ECOSYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS

Here are some basic Desert ecosystem characteristics–

  • Aridity

It is the common characteristic of all the deserts on the earth. Aridity simply implies the deficiency of moistures or dryness. Desert experience very less rainfall and thus result in aridity.

  • Less rainfall/ precipitation

Less precipitation is one of the major features of deserts and also the reason behind the dryness. The rainfall in deserts is seasonal and occurs only for a limited duration. The annual rainfall that a desert receives every year is just 25-30 centimeters.

  • Extreme temperature

Desert ecosystems experience extreme temperatures during day and night.   The days are very hot and the nights can be extremely cold. It is the sole characteristic of all the desert ecosystems either hot or cold all lacks moisture.

  • Velocity of wind

It tends to be very high in a desert ecosystem. This is the reason deserts experience sandstorms/ dust storms of high intensity resulting in the formation of huge sand dunes.

  • Scarcity of water

Due to less rainfall, there is a shortage of water in a desert ecosystem. Due to the scarcity of water deserts have to face the situation of drought half of the year.

  • Humidity-

The humidity level in a desert ecosystem is very low in the daytime and relatively high at night.

  • The quality of the soil
