Devon Orienteering Club seeks to encourage and promote the sport of orienteering in and around the County of Devon. Established 35 years ago, Devon OC is a friendly forward-looking club, which organises orienteering activities all over the county.
The next club event is at Knightshayes (National Trust) and is a 3 person relay event -or you can take part in an individual score event.
Please do what you can to support this event; a handicap system is in place for the relay and when combined with the need for individual team strategy means that it is for any one team to win! If you are interested in taking part in a team either:
- Find two other club members (or potential club members) to join you and contact Tom McMurtrie on firstname.lastname@example.org by 12th June
- Contact Ruth Chesters, Club Captain on email@example.com
- Turn up on the day and get together a scratch team (but there is limited entry on the day)
A small band of intrepid DEVON club members trekked to Yorkshire to compete in the British Long Distance Orienteering Championships, held on Arncliffe and Kilnsey North. Open, windswept dales interspersed with limestone pavements, gullies and drystone walls to catch the unsuspecting runner!
The Permanent Orienteering Course at Haldon Forest Park is now open!
We are delighted that, with the support of Forestry England, the volunteer efforts of Devon Orienteering club members together with funding from the Rural Development Programme England, the permanent course at Haldon has been remapped, new posts have been installed, new courses planned and maps printed.
It is with great sadness that we heard that Sue Gard passed away on Maundy Thursday after a short illness. Sue was a keen orienteer, and had been an active member of Devon Orienteering Club in the 1980s and 1990s. She actively supported Junior orienteering, and supported the South West squad at National Events. More recently she had moved to Somerset and continued to run with Quantocks Orienteers. Sue was very gently spoken, and always enjoyed a chat before or after a run. She was often accompanied by her collie.
We do not yet know when Sue's funeral will be held, but if you would like details, please contact me by email. Our thoughts are with Bill and the family at this sad time.
The cost of entries for the south-west sprint championship event are cheaper if you enter by 28th April! Please enter via this link: www.fabian4.co.uk -and although it is a championship event, as usual "all ages, all abilities, all welcome"!
Sprint and Urban events are really enjoyable. If you have not done so before, why not give it a try? We very much hope to see you there. For details see: Events
Good luck to the 63 Devon club members heading up to the JK over the Easter weekend. The format for the weekend is Friday - Sprint; Saturday - Middle Distance; Sunday - Long Distance and Monday - Relays. We have eight relay teams entered on the monday - thanks to Ruth, our club captain for organising these teams. For results over the weekend, check the JK webpages.
We hope to distribute some flyers for the SW Middle Distance event at Braunton in May, and the SW Sprint event at Exeter Uni in June. Please contact Rob Parkinson if you can help.
