Why should a sports massage and its benefits be limited to athletic performers?
The benefits of sports massage that can be experienced by non-athletic people is huge. Just ask yourself if your quality of life would be improved by:
a reduction in muscle stiffness,
increase in range of motion,
reduction in pain
helpful in reducing tension type headaches
For so many people work involves some sort of technology use where the duties are very sedentary and they are sitting at a desk for extended periods of time. This type of work not only involves some very repetitive actions but can result in problems with posture subsequently causing pain. Most of our clients who work in office type careers present with chronic neck and upper back pain along with issues in the forearms and shoulders.
People working in occupations where there are performing heavy, repetitive physical labour jobs seem to present with similar issues of back and neck pain and shoulder issues.
Remember that sports massage is not just for those high performance athletes, everyone can benefit.
Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage in that some of the same techniques are used; however, with a deep tissue massage deeper pressure is used to help release chronic muscular tension and is very beneficial for relief from strains and sports injuries. The deeper pressure along with techniques and modalities used will reportedly help to break up scar tissue that may form following an injury and reduce tension in muscle and other tissue. Deep tissue massage may also help promote faster healing by increasing circulation and reduction of inflammation.
6 Benefits of a deep tissue massage
A deep tissue massage will offer both psychological and physical benefits but it is different from other massage techniques where the focus is relaxation. Deep tissue massage provides much deeper pressure with the purpose of treating muscle pain and reducing stiffness but at the same time, this deeper massage will help you unwind psychologically, too.
Clients of ours have reported that our deep tissue massage (both on the table and on the matt techniques) using IASTM and other modalities has helped with:
relieves back pain due to scoliosis (which is short-term as scoliosis cannot be fixed with manual therapy; however regular deep tissue massage can help with relaxation of tight muscles and with pain relief)
Can deep tissue massage be compared to Swedish (relaxation massage)?
Deep tissue massage and Swedish (relaxation) massage are two completely different types of massage. Both types of massage will use the same types of techniques, but they have different uses and vary greatly when it comes to the amount of pressure used.
Difference in Intention. A deep tissue massage is typically used to treat ongoing or chronic pain issues and sport-related. Swedish or relaxation massage is typically used to help with relaxation and may help to reduce symptoms of anxiety or stress. Swedish massage is a great way to help reduce muscular tension caused by the daily activities one performs.
Difference in Pressure used. Swedish or relaxation massage is a lighter form of massage that uses firm but light pressure while deep tissue massage uses some pretty specific stripping and fractioning strokes applied using differing degrees of pressure based on the clients tolerance levels.
Prior to the commencement of any type of massage, our therapists discuss the following things with the client:
Areas of concern
Range of motion in area of concern
A general healthy history discussion
Once a short discussion is complete, the therapist will ask you to “undress to your level of comfort” and lie either on your back or stomach, under what we call drapes (massage sheets). Your therapist will let you know that the only area being exposed will be the area to be worked on.
The first part of any massage is spent using what is called Effleurage which is a French word meaning “to skim” or “to touch lightly”. Effleurage is simply the way therapists warm the area to be worked on. Once the area to be worked on is warmed up then problem areas will be addressed using deeper techniques and modalities such as IASTM (instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization), Rattan Massage as required.
4 side effects of massage
With a Swedish massage it is pretty common to feel sleepy and very relaxed following the massage. However, with a deep tissue massage it is common to have soreness for a few days following the massage.
Though massage therapy is considered very safe, deep tissue massage uses very firm pressure and may not be handled well by all people. Your therapist will “check in” with you frequently to make sure you’re handling the pressure so don’t be afraid to let your therapist know if the pressure is too much.
If you have concerns prior to booking a deep tissue massage, talk to your attending physician and have him/her make a formal referral for massage. If you have underlying secondary issues such as cancer, a bleeding disorder or clotting disorder, talk to your attending physician to ensure that deep tissue massage is safe.
If you are ready to make an appointment for a deep tissue massage therapy treatment or if you have questions regarding the safety of deep tissue massage for a specific condition, please reach out to us
Rattan (bamboo) massage uses bamboo stalks of various lengths, along with Swedish strokes and sometimes deep tissue pressure. Some therapists even incorporate Thai full body massage (using some rattan massage along with mostly manual massage) and traditional Chinese rattan massage (where the massage uses all sizes of rattan and minimal manual massage).
In Asian cultures, bamboo still symbolizes youth, strength, and optimal health. Although very new to the the western massage therapy culture, bamboo has been used as a primary tool for deep tissue work in other areas of the world for centuries.
Bamboo and rattan tools of varying shapes and sizes are used during massage, to replace the therapist’s hands. The bamboo is held by the therapist and rolled over the tissue with the same way they would with their hands. This technique is very similar to a stone massage. Heating them makes them feel relaxing on the client’s body.
There are techniques which use bamboo to stretch the fascia in different directions in order to loosen adhesions. Other techniques involve light tapping with the bamboo sticks to stimulate blood flow and increase circulation to the muscles. The massage can be as light or as deep as necessary.

Bamboo (Rattan) Massage – Healing with Bamboo – coming June 2019
Rattan is a type of bamboo which is solid rather than hollow. Massaging using Rattan is referred to as either a Rattan Massage or Bamboo Massage. While performing a Bamboo (Rattan) massage, the therapist will use different lengths of Rattan to provide lighter Swedish strokes and sometimes deep tissue pressure.
In some cultures, bamboo is a symbol of youth, strength, and health. Although the use of Rattan in massage therapy is pretty new here in Canada, using Rattan (Bamboo) as a tool for deep tissue work is very effective and has been used in other areas of the world for centuries.
Bamboo and rattan tools of varying shapes and sizes are used during massage, to replace and save the therapist’s hands in areas that need a deeper touch. The bamboo is held by the therapist and rolled over the tissue with the same way they would with their hands.
We often have those clients who require a very deep pressure of massage. This can now be fully addressed with the proper use of the IASTM in the form of Rattan and Rockblades all while still maintaining a natural feel to the client’s massage experience.
Come wind down and relax with a Bamboo (Rattan) Massages! Whether it’s a stressful week at work, or just looking to treat yourself!
Most of us know how much our neck and upper back can be affected by using some form of technology. We have all felt the pain when sitting at a desk using a computer or simply from long periods of time texting on our cell phones; however, most of us haven’t heard the term “text neck”.
Text neck is an actual “thing”. It is a repetitive stress injury that is caused by long periods of time spent looking down at your cell phone, your laptop or other wireless devices. These types of prolonged actions can actually contribute to poor posture and neck pain (text neck). In addition to neck pain and poor posture, it can cause shoulder and upper back pain and headaches.
What Causes Text Neck?
When you are sitting up straight, the weight of your head reportedly puts only about 10-12 pounds of force onto the muscles of your neck. But for every inch that your head goes into a forward position, another 10-12 pounds of forces is added to that. Think of how many added pounds of force you are putting on your neck if you moved your head forward just by 6 inches….AN EXTRA 60-72 POUNDS of added weight and stress on the neck. Text neck is caused by repetitively putting your neck in to positions that it is not supposed to be put into. So sit up, pull back those shoulders and bring you head up to neutral…believe me you will notice a difference.
Signs and Symptoms of Text Neck
You may feel soreness and tightness in your upper back and shoulders
You may even feel pain and soreness as soon as you start using your device
You may feel upper back and neck pain that could range from aching pain that just doesn’t go away to muscle spasms in the upper back and neck
ongoing chronic headaches
If not treated, “text neck” could lead to arthritis, curvature of the spine and general inflammation in the neck and upper neck.
How Can You Prevent Injury?
It is important that when you first notice symptoms that steps are taken to prevent further problems. The purpose of treating text neck is to reduce the pain and inflammation, restore range of motion, prevent what could become a permanent spinal curvature.
However, Text Neck can be prevented by:
Take breaks from working on your device – Text neck is considered to be a repetitive strain injury and any repetitive strain injury can be prevented by taking regular breaks and changing position.
Change the way you are holding your device – Instead of working with a head forward and down position, try holding your device up higher so that it is aligned with your eyes. This will give your neck and upper back a bit of a rest.
Be active in exercise that focuses on posture (ie.: yoga) and do simple neck stretches.
Listen to your body! If you are feeling pain in your neck, your back and your arms, take a break.
Massages are often booked by individuals looking to soothe sore spots or alleviate tension from tight muscles. Yet, the benefits of booking a treatment can extend beyond the physical realm, delivering many mental health advantages, too. Here are a few ways these therapeutic services can also support your mental health.
What Are The Some Mental Health Benefits of Receiving a Massage?1. Help To Control Work-Related Stress
If you’re like many other working adults, your job may be one of your greatest sources of stress. Even people who love their careers experience day-to-day pressures from factors like aggressive deadlines. Massage therapy has been shown to alleviate many of the physical symptoms associated with work-related stress, including muscle tension and pain, fatigue, and headaches. It can also control the emotional and mental effects of stress, as it reportedly decreases the stress hormone cortisol throughout the body.
2. Lessen Symptoms of Depression
In a number of studies, depression scores have decreased as a result of receiving regular massages. Experts suspect this could be a result of the activating effects which take place as a result of physical touch, including increased serotonin and dopamine. Also known as “feel good chemicals,” serotonin and dopamine are brain chemicals associated with happiness and reduced anxiety. It’s, therefore, no surprise that many study participants have also witnessed mood improvements, such as reduced anxiety, less agitation, and increased relaxation.
3. Help In The Recovery From Mental Health Disorders
Individuals with mental health disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as eating disorders, may find comfort in scheduling regular sessions with a Registered Massage Therapist. Forveterans returning from war zones, massage has been found to alleviate symptoms of PTSD, including tension, irritability, anxiety, and depression. Stress and anxiety associated witheating disorders have also been reduced through regular sessions, along with decreased body dissatisfaction and increased dopamine levels.

It is the time of the year when the weather is starting to warm up, the grass is getting green and in some places the spring flowers are starting to come up. This is the time of the year when most of us are looking for any reason to spend time outside, enjoying the spring sunshine.
Although each season has its own unique beauty, Spring is my favorite season. This is the season when all nature is awakened in all of its glory.
With Spring comes the awakening of nature, a time of renewal and rebirth. And this is why we are excited about celebrating our planet on April 21, 2019, Earth Day!
How will you spend your Earth Day? We will be spending out Earth Day outside, enjoying the sunshine and all that nature has to offer. The following are some reasons why we think you should also spend your Earth Day outside:
Being outside and active simply feels great– Being outside and in nature can do wonders for reliving stress and anxiety. The beauty of nature can reportedly boost endorphin levels and dopamine production which gives us the feeling of being happy. Give it a try. In Edmonton, we have our wonderful river valley with so many places to explore either running, cycling or walking.
You’ll get a big dose of Vitamin D– Vitamin D is essential for bone mineralization and reportedly has many other benefits and the most effective way of getting this vitamin is from sunshine.
Smells of nature are therapeutic– If you’re like me, that earthy scent that comes when it is about to rain is almost soothing and the smell of fresh cut grass can make me feel energized or quite relaxed. Smells seem to have an amazing ability to transform mood. This is part of the reason we use aromatherapy diffusers with every one of our massages.
On April 21, 2019, we encourage you to choose an outdoor activity that will allow you to appreciate nature, to appreciate the gifts this earth has given to us. Happy Earth Day!
