(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/16/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association (USNAAA) to drop an anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist as a speaker at a February 21 luncheon for its San Diego chapter.

SEE: Chapter Luncheon, February 21, 2018 at 11:30 am

CAIR says the speaker, John Guandolo, is an infamous Islamophobe who claims a former CIA director was a “secret Muslim” and that Muslim hotel managers, cabbies and 7-11 workers seek to take over America.

Last month, CAIR welcomed a decision by Tennessee’s Trevecca Nazarene University to cancel an anti-Muslim event would have featured three Islamophobic speakers, including Guandolo.

CAIR similarly welcomed a decision by Virginia’s Amherst County Sheriff's Office to drop an event featuring Islamophobic conspiracy theorist Chris Gaubatz. Gaubatz is an employee of Guandolo’s anti-Muslim hate group Understanding the Threat.

In a letter to USNAAA’s President & CEO Byron F. Marchant, CAIR-San Diego Executive Director Hanif Mohebi wrote in part:

“We urge the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association to disassociate its members from an individual who promotes bigotry and conspiracy theories targeting an American religious minority. While everyone has the right to free speech, no one has the right to the credibility offered by speaking to a respected association of our nation’s military personnel.”

BACKGROUNDER ON JOHN GUANDOLO:

The FBI is currently investigating an image tweeted by Guandolo’s hate group that purported to show the bombing of “CAIR HQ” in Washington, D.C. Guandolo, who has previously tweeted that “CAIR needs to be obliterated,” re-tweeted the bombing image on his personal account. Earlier this month, Guandolo tweeted that “Islam is evil & barbaric.”

Minnesota’s Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek has accused Guandolo of assaulting him during a national law enforcement conference earlier this year in Reno, Nev.

Anti-Muslim Speaker Now Accused of Assaulting a Sheriff

Among his many bizarre and Islamophobic claims, Guandolo has falsely claimed that:

  • U.S. mosques are planning armed attacks on law enforcement authorities and churches,
  • the Black Lives Matter movement is funded by “enemies of the United States,”
  • when a Delaware Imam (Islamic religious leader) touched his nose during the pledge of allegiance before a legislative session it was part of “civilizational jihad,”
  • former CIA Director John Brennan was a secret Muslim,
  • Muslims are “obligated” to lie,
  • Muslim hotel managers, cabbies and 7-11 workers seek to take over America,
  • it is “unprofessional” for officials to seek information about Islam from Islamic religious leaders (imams).

CAIR has in the past said Guandolo is putting local Muslim communities at risk by making the false claim that, “Mosques/Islamic Centers are organizing for armed confrontation with law enforcement, shoring up physical defenses where they see likely confrontation and increasing their pre-attack surveillances of churches and other targets.”

Backgrounder on Islamophobe John Guandolo:

CAIR’s profile of Guandolo documents his belief that America “is at war with Islam” and that major Muslim organizations and mosques are “preparing for combat.” Guandolo also claims there is inaction on the part of the U.S. government to counter this threat because people inside the Trump White House “have been co-opted by the bad guys.”

Earlier this year, Guandolo excused a terror attack on a London mosque because “people who are still sane” are “having to make very difficult decisions.”

In 2016, a Texas college canceled a similar event. The college’s decision came following a request by CAIR’s Dallas-Fort Worth chapter.

In 2015, CAIR welcomed the withdrawal of an FBI representative from an event in Texas that was initially sponsored by the anti-Muslim hate group ACT! for America and featured Guandolo.

Virginia’s Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy rescinded its approval of in-service training credits for state law enforcement scheduled to attend a training Guandolo was conducting in Culpeper, Va., after being made aware of his anti-Islam rhetoric.

A sheriff in Kansas decided not to partner with a citizens group sponsoring a Guandolo training after being informed of his conspiracy theories. When a journalist at Kansas’ Wichita Eagle covered the controversy, Guandolo accused the reporter of material support of terrorism.

A number of Arizona police departments decided not to send officers to one of Guandolo’s trainings.

Guandolo left the FBI shortly after reports surfaced that he had allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a key witness in a corruption trial targeting a member of Congress. In addition, he is documented as having falsified his credentials and work experience.

Major General Tony Cucolo, Commandant of the US Army War College, informed CAIR in an email: “Mr. Guandolo's claim (in print) that he teaches at the Army War College and any other references (e.g., online) identifying him as an adjunct instructor here are simply untrue.”

The Washington-based Muslim civil rights group is asking Muslim community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: https://www.cair.com/civil-rights/report-an-incident/view/form.html

(BALTIMORE, MD, 2/16/18) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today announced that it has submitted testimony in support of HB0511 Public Institutions of Higher Education Hate-Bias Incident Prevention Act that was introduced in the Maryland state legislature.

The bill, sponsored by Maryland State Delegate Angela Angel, was introduced in response to the murder of an African-American Bowie State University student, Lt. Richard Collins III, at the University of Maryland College Park campus by a suspect with ties to neo-Nazi and white supremacist hate groups. Collins was fatally stabbed days before he was expected to graduate.

SEE: CAIR Condemns Murder of Maryland College Student by Suspect with White Supremacist

The bill requires all Maryland public universities and colleges to:

  • Develop and implement cultural diversity and hate bias training for all incoming freshmen
  • Establish an on-campus Hate/Bias Coordinator
  • Create an electronic crime alert notification system to include notifications of hate/bias incidents
  • Annually report all hate/bias related incidents and reports to the Maryland General Assembly

CAIR's testimony reads in part:

“Racists and bigots have become emboldened on college campuses across the state, especially since the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Hatred manifests in different forms. One year ago, CAIR began offering free self-defense workshops to Muslim women who wear the Islamic headscarf, known as the hijab, after we received four reports of visibly Muslim students on Maryland college campuses who had been physically and verbally assaulted. We believe that HB0511 will:

  • help discourage on-campus hate/bias incidents targeting racial, religious & ethnic minorities through training and education
  • improve the tracking and reporting of hate/bias incidents
  • provide valuable data that can be used to help prevent such crimes, and determine the allocation of resources to support victims and their families”

"Every student, regardless of race, religion or ethnicity, has the right to feel safe and respected in their learning environment," said CAIR’s Maryland representative Zainab Chaudry. "We thank House Appropriations Committee Chair McIntosh and committee members for the opportunity to deliver testimony on this important bill, and respectfully urge them to help create safer, and more inclusive and welcoming campus environments by providing a favorable report."

The bill's language was partly modeled on some steps that have already been taken by the University of Maryland College Park administration, with the goal of seeing these measures being implemented state-wide.

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/15/18) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today announced a win in an ongoing federal lawsuit on behalf of six individuals challenging the lawfulness of President Trump’s “Muslim ban 3.0.”

SEE: 'The Words of the President' Doom Trump Travel Ban, Fourth Circuit Says

A panel of 13 judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Va., sitting “en banc,” today declared Trump's Muslim ban illegal and unconstitutional.

[NOTE: CAIR and the Brennan Center for Justice filed the lawsuit in October 2017. On appeal, this case, Zakzok v. Trump, was consolidated with two others and were jointly decided by the Fourth Circuit today.]

In its ruling against the Trump administration, the court concluded that "the Proclamation [Muslim Ban 3.0] is unconstitutionally tainted with animus toward Islam." The court went on to state that the Muslim ban violated the First Amendment's Establishment Clause because the primary purpose of the ban is "to exclude Muslims from the United States."

The Fourth Circuit recognized the great harm endured by those affected by the Muslim ban: "Prolonged and indefinite separation of parents, children, siblings, and partners create not only temporary feelings of anxiety but also lasting strains on the most basic human relationships cultivated through shared time and experience."

In its opinion, the court pointed to CAIR's client Fahed Muqbil to emphasize the harm done by the ban: "Plaintiff Fahed Muqbil has a one-year-old daughter who, due to severe birth defects, has been undergoing multiple life-threatening surgeries in the United States without her mother, a Yemeni national, by her side."

On the eve of Muslim Ban 3.0's anniversary, Muqbil's wife entered the United States, reuniting the Muqbil family in Mississippi.

Video: CAIR Welcomes Home to Mississippi a Family Separated by the Muslim Ban

Because the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed the administration to implement Muslim Ban 3.0 while the various legal challenges against it unfold, the Fourth Circuit’s decision will not have any immediate effect on the ability of foreign nationals from the banned countries to obtain a U.S. visa.

“As the court properly concluded, the government cannot exclude anyone from entering the United States based on his or her religion,” said CAIR National Litigation Director Lena Masri.

“The Fourth Circuit’s decision is the latest blow to the Trump administration’s ugly white supremacist agenda,” said CAIR Senior Litigation Attorney Gadeir Abbas

"We are pleased that another court has recognized the enduring harm that American Muslims are suffering due to discriminatory and unconstitutional policies put forward by the Trump administration,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.

This is the latest court ruling against the Trump administration’s efforts to implement its Muslim Ban.

In December of last year, CAIR applauded the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ unanimous decision against the Trump administration’s “Muslim Ban 3.0.”

On Sunday, February 11th, CAIR-Columbus hosted a Governor’s Candidate Forum at the Dublin Community Recreation Center in Dublin, Ohio.

Participants included State Senator Joe Schiavoni, former Congressman Dennis Kucinich, former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Bill O'Neill, and former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray. The event lasted approximately 90 minutes and was attended by over 200 people. Questions focused on the opioid crises, the environment, civil rights for religious and racial minorities, women in politics, and the environment.

Video of the event can be viewed here: https://www.cair-columbus.com/cair-columbus-hosts-governors-candidate-forum/

The forum was moderated by CAIR-Columbus Executive Director Jennifer Nimer and CAIR-Columbus Legal Director Romin Iqbal.

“It is great to see candidates for Ohio’s highest state office taking time out of their schedules to come and address Central Ohio’s American-Muslim community,” Nimer said. “We hope that people walk away from this event with a better idea of where each of these candidates stand on critical issues facing our state.”

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, CAIR-Ohio does not endorse any particular candidate or political party for any office.

(KANSAS CITY, KS, 12/14/18) – On Thursday, February 15, the Kansas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Kansas) will join Muslim community leaders in addressing the City Council of Kansas City (3 p.m., City Council Chamber, 26th Floor, Kansas City City Hall, 414 E 12th St., Kansas City, MO 64106) about a resolution in support of the Muslim community, recognizing Muslims as an integral part of the community and denouncing Islamophobia and other forms of hate.

Two Muslim representatives, Moussa Elbayoumy from CAIR-Kansas and Shaheer Akhtab from KC Coalition for Good Government, are scheduled to address the council.

The proposed resolution, titled “Supporting the Muslim community in Kansas City against prejudice and bias,” states in part:

“Be it resolved, That the Mayor and Council; together with the Human Rights Commission, recognize that the threats posed by Islamophobia to our American values of religious freedom and cultural diversity and declare that we as a community support our Muslim residents.”

Late last year, CAIR-Kansas called on state and federal law enforcement to investigate as a possible hate crime a threating Facebook post suggesting using the Wichita Islamic Society’s building as a shooting range.

The Washington-based civil rights organization said it has witnessed an unprecedented increase in hate incidents targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump.

CAIR asks community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/report

Because of the rise in hate incidents, CAIR recently launched an app to share critical "know your rights" information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents.

(Miami, FL, 2/14/2018) - The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the nation's largest civil rights and advocacy organization, today thanked State Senator Victor Torres for his unshakable fight to protect civil liberties for all by opposing unconstitutional "anti-BDS" legislation and urges his peers in the Florida Senate to mirror his stance and oppose the "Israel Anti-Boycott Act."

ACT NOW: Click Here To E-mail your Florida Senators Before 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 15th, And Urge Them to Vote NO on SB 780

CAIR-Florida and other civil rights organizations state that proposed legislation would violate the constitutionally-guaranteed free speech rights of American business owners and individuals who participate in the international boycott of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine territories. Boycotts such as the Montgomery Bus boycott against segregation or the boycott of companies enabling South African Apartheid were employed successfully in support of civil and human rights and as an integral part of our political process.

The Israel Anti-Boycott Act (SB 780) was introduced at a time when Palestinian human rights activists in the United States and elsewhere embraced boycotts as a strong, peaceful, and effective tool to pressure the Israeli government to respect the human rights of Palestinians and to influence the American public to join them and do the same.

"We call on our state senators to defend the rights of all Floridians to express their political beliefs without fear of government retaliation or retribution," said CAIR-Florida’s Orlando Regional Director Rasha Mubarak.

SB 780 is a threat to the free speech of all Americans and is clearly unconstitutional. The act would charge those American business owners and individuals who participate in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement with criminal penalties. CAIR-Florida believes that American involvement in foreign boycotts started with dumping tea into Boston Harbor. It is un-American and illegal for the U.S. Government to deny U.S. businesses and individuals the right to work to change the illegal and discriminatory actions of a foreign government.

CAIR-Florida is the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties of all people, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

(DALLAS, TX, 2/14/18) — The Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-DFW) today called on the city council of Plano, Texas, to censure one of its members who shared a Facebook video questioning whether President Trump should “ban Islam in American schools.”

Plano City Council Member Tom Harrison recently shared the video on his personal social media calling for President Trump to ban Islam in American Schools. Plano is home to many Muslim residents.

“We call for the censure of Council Member Harrison for promoting this hate-filled and un-American message,” said CAIR-DFW Legal Director Nikiya Natale. “Unfortunately, Islamophobic comments from public officials are all too common, and it is important that action be taken to address such bigoted rhetoric.”

She added that while every American has the right to free speech -- even bigoted speech – those who serve a diverse public should be held to a higher standard of conduct.

(Miami, FL, 2/14/18) - The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today announces the release of an emergency travel advisory warning immigrants and people of color traveling to Florida of the many risks they may run into. This effort is the result of a coalition of statewide groups fearing for the safety of immigrants and people of color.

Emergency Travel Advisory Issued for the State of Florida:

Immigrants across Florida feel more threatened than ever before, with attacks on the national level being amplified by local anti-immigrant policies and corporations that refuse to protect their customers. In response, CAIR-Florida, the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC), Mi Familia Vota, QLatinx, Latino Justice PRLDEF, Central Florida Jobs With Justice, Orange County Classroom Teachers Association, Florida Student Power Network, Organize Florida, Dream Defenders, New Florida Majority, Iniciativa Accion Puertorriquena, Interfaith Council of Central FL, Faith in Florida, Alianza Americas, SEIU Florida, Miami Worker's Center, Women's March of West Palm Beach, United We Dream, and the Advancement Project have released an Emergency Travel Advisory for the State of Florida. Major actions will be happening statewide on Wednesday, February 14th, in conjunction with the release of the Emergency Travel Advisory.

SEE HERE: Emergency Travel Advisory (English)

Emergency Travel Advisory (Spanish)

In January, sheriffs from 17 Florida counties announced plans to work more closely than ever with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to target immigrants for deportation. But even before this new deportation scheme, Florida already had a dramatic spike in the number of ICE arrests, the highest in the country, and videos of a Jamaican grandmother being profiled and detained on a Greyhound bus and a man from Trinidad being dragged away from a bus in handcuffs have been viewed by millions of people across the world. In light of these facts, all immigrants are urged to reconsider visiting Florida and especially recommended to avoid high risk areas, including ports, airports and Greyhound stations. While a boycott is not being recommended at this time, travelers to Florida are being asked to use discretion, understand their risks and seek legal advice.

"CAIR-Florida continues to fight to protect immigrants across the state of Florida as the anti-immigrant policies increases and their safety and security is compromised with each passing day. Despite the heightened rise in the number of ICE arrests, sheriffs from 17 Florida counties announced plans to work even closer with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to target immigrants for deportation. We urge and encourage travelers to the state to use caution and seek prior legal advise", said Wilfredo Ruiz, CAIR-Florida's Communications Director.

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA, 2/13/2018) -- The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) and the law firm of Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger today filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of a traveler who was removed from a Southwest Airlines flight in April 2016 after another passenger complained about his speaking Arabic on the phone.

Khairuldeen Makhzoomi, then a student at UC Berkeley, was on a Southwest Airlines flight from Los Angeles International Airport after an event at which he had the opportunity to hear UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. As he boarded the flight, he excitedly called his uncle to tell him about the event. Another passenger, overhearing him speaking in Arabic, reported him to Southwest Airlines staff. Makhzoomi was promptly removed from the aircraft, questioned by law enforcement, and barred from returning to the flight.

“Southwest Airlines removed Mr. Makhzoomi from a flight and turned him into local and federal law enforcement for no reason other than his spoken language,” said Zahra Billoo, CAIR-SFBA executive director. “What Mr. Makhzoomi experienced is the essence of religious profiling, and every Muslim airline passenger’s worst nightmare.”

EVENT LISTING: https://www.facebook.com/events/767554610119315/

“The Day of Prayer for Our Legislators is intended to serve two purposes: to reconnect the Muslim community and our allies to the work of the legislature, and to respond to the marginalization of minority faiths and communities by some elected officials,” said CAIR-OK Executive Director Adam Soltani. “We welcome our fellow Oklahomans of all faith backgrounds to join us on this day as we pray for peace and for a better state and country.”

Featured speakers for the event include Rev. Lori Walke of the Mayflower Congregational UCC; Rabbi Vered Harris of Temple B’nai Israel; and Rev. Shannon Fleck of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches.

Jummah is the weekly congregational prayer for Muslims, offered on Friday afternoons. Although it is commonly held in a mosque, it can be held in any public location. The prayer consists of a “khutbah,” or sermon, recitation of the Holy Quran, and communal prayers. The event is free and open to the public.
