Whether you’re buying an engagement ring, a ring for a special occasion (such as a birthday, anniversary or milestone), or even just treating yourself to a beautiful piece of jewellery, there’s one thing many people find a little bit difficult: choosing the correct ring size. Ring sizes can be challenging get right, but it’s important that you do – otherwise, that beautiful ring will sit in a box or need returning for re-sizing.
So, how do you find out what ring size to buy? Well, here’s a ring size guide we have created, suitable for use when choosing any of the rings on our website. Our chart will ensure that you choose a ring that’s precisely the right size for you or your special someone, meaning it can be worn right away. And, the ring size converter below will also help you if you already know which ring size you’d like based upon a measurement in another country.
How to measure your finger
Before you can use the charts below, you’ll need to know how to measure your ring size. This method below will teach you how to measure your ring size in the UK, using millimetres.
Take a piece of string or a piece of paper (no wider than 1.4cm or ½ inch), as this will help you to be accurate.
Wrap it around the base of the finger you would like to measure.
Use a pen to mark the point on the string or paper where it overlaps. The overlap will form a complete circle.
Take a ruler and measure the length of the string or paper from the starting end, to the end you marked with the pen.
Finally, use this measurement and compare it against the chart below to determine your UK ring size.
Of course, if you’re buying a ring for a gift or for an engagement, our advice guide on choosing an engagement ring contains some helpful tips on how to measure someone’s ring size discreetly.
Tips for measuring your ring size
Measure when your fingers are at their largest – usually at the end of the day.
Make sure you can comfortably slide the string or paper over your finger joints/knuckles.
Measure your finger 3 or 4 times to make sure you’re getting a correct reading.
Use a few different pieces of paper or string too – these materials can twist or stretch so it’s best to take a few readings.
Measuring your finger using our ring sizer chart
If you’d prefer not to measure your ring size using the tips above, simply download our ring sizer chart here. Here’s how to use it:
To guarantee that your ring measurements are perfectly precise, ensure that page scaling is set to ‘None’ when you print it off. Use A4 paper.
Then, double check you’ve printed the chart correctly by measuring the line on the right. This will show you whether or not scaling has occurred.
Take a ring that fits on the desired finger and place it over the circles on this chart.
Line up the ring by placing it in such a way that the inside edge of the ring matches the circle nearest in size. This measurement will reveal the diameter of the ring.
If the ring falls between two sizes, order the larger size. (Remember you may be able to order a half or quarter size).
Men’s ring sizes and ladies ring sizes
The ring size charts below can be used for determining both men’s ring sizes and ladies ring sizes. Male and female fingers are measured using the same scale – men’s hands just tend to be larger than women’s, and therefore will fall under the bigger sizes.
Ring size guide
This size guide is relevant whether you’re determining men’s ring sizes in the UK or ladies ring sizes. Note that the sizes below include half sizes, quarter sizes and three-quarter sizes, that are also often available.

German size charts, Italian ring sizes, US ring size charts… you could spend a great deal of time browsing international ring size charts in an effort to buy the correct ring. Here at Browns Family Jewellers, we’ve compiled them into one helpful chart so that you can quickly identify the size you need at a glance with our ring size converter below.
UK, Australia & South Africa
US & Canada
Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland & Spain
Germany, Russia, Ukraine & Asia
India, China, Japan, South America, Turkey & Israel
Bear in mind that the measurements in this chart may deviate ever so slightly from the measurements you’re familiar with – especially if you’re converting UK to US ring sizes, or Italian ring sizes to UK ring sizes for example. That’s because while jewellers tend to use the same measurements, different countries use different scales – variations of a ¼ or ½ a millimetre or so are to be expected.
Hopefully, you will now have more confidence when choosing the correct ring size. For many, it may seem tough to take something as strongly sentimental as a wedding ring and make it any more special. But with an engraved message featured on the inside of the band, you can take this piece of jewellery and make it something to truly cherish forever and that is completely personal to you and your partner.
How many characters can I have engraved on my wedding band?
The inside of most wedding bands are able to feature around 30 characters including spaces, so sadly you can’t have all of your vows or an epic love poem added to your rings.
What type of band is best for engraving?
Ideally, a wide plain band works best for engravings. It allows the jeweller more room to work with to add the characters but there is a new trend for having engravings added to diamonds themselves.
This will need to be carried out by a specialist jeweller but the engraving itself will not be visible to the naked eye – it can only be seen with x10 magnification – and means that it’s a truly personal and special message for you and your partner to enjoy.
The metal you choose for your ring makes a big difference too. A softer metal – such as 14k or 18k gold – is easier to engrave, but it may wear away quicker over time, with use. Platinum is a good choice for engraving, as the hard wearing metal lasts and lasts, making it resistant to wearing down and everyday scratches and damage.

Take a look through this list and choose something that feels right, for you and your partner:

All brides want to sparkle on their big day, in more ways than one. Think glowing skin, hair and accessories. Picking the perfect necklace to accent your wedding dress neckline can be a daunting task. That’s why, at Browns, we have assembled some handy hints to help you expertly accessorise on your wedding day.
Straight and Strapless
This elegant, classic neckline has to be one of the most effortless wedding dress designs to accessorise. The best thing about this clean, straight-lined design is that your accessory choices are limitless (hallelujah). If you love glamour and glitz, then this is the time to shine! Why not opt for a statement necklace: a collaret or elongated pearl strand necklace, complementing this wedding dress fantastically. Always make sure you wear something that you feel comfortable in, even better something that you would want to wear again and again.
This pendant exudes luxury, the design of this diamond pendant has been beautifully embellished with the highest quality of brilliant cut diamonds.
The sweetheart neckline has a distinctive heart shaped style accentuating your décolletage. The wedding dress has a flattering finish whilst still leaving room for accessories. The sweetheart design has the benefit of making your torso and neck appear longer, making this a great shape to showcase a fabulous necklace. When choosing a necklace to suit the sweetheart dress design, the possibilities are abundant. That being said, though, it’s best to stick to one feature jewellery piece as a sweetheart neckline is eye-catching all on its own. A simple necklace with a statement clasp can work wonders, adding a modernist appeal to the overall vintage look of the sweetheart neckline whilst remaining glamourous.
Sweetheart neckline wedding dress
This elegant silhouette has a pronounced neckline, naturally framing the open chest area. This dress neckline was made to be adorned with a stunning collar dazzle of diamonds, or, if you want to exude vintage glamour, a pearl stranded necklace will radiate a whimsical renaissance appeal.
Beautiful diamond halo pendant – £695
This versatile and extremely flattering neckline is perfect for all shapes and sizes. The ‘U’ design can scoop as low as you desire, and many brides opt for a mirrored scoop to the reverse of the dress. The contemporary feminine design is one of the most popular choices in wedding dresses. The traditional design suits more refined accessories; think clean linear pendants or simple necklaces.
Flattering scoop neck wedding dress
Off the shoulder
If you have been blessed with killer collarbones, then this neckline will work wonders. Similar to the strapless design, this style does leave quite a lot of skin on show. The best accessories to complement this neckline would be a choker designed necklace or a collarette piece, filling the space flawlessly.
HANDY HINT – If necklaces aren’t for you then you could adorn your wedding ensemble with a pair of showstopping, large drop earrings. Large earrings will complement the off-shoulder detail whilst making a statement drawing attention to your beautiful wedding makeup. For those bohemian brides out there, why not try some dazzling diamond hoop earrings, bringing a free spirited feeling to you wedding day ensemble.
This piece exudes luxury a true heirloom that will be treasured forever,l showcasing the best in jewellery craftsmanship – £2395
With this glamorous plunged neck design, this neckline is a feature all of its own so keep jewellery clean, simple and sophisticated. Think of delicately designed lariat thin chain necklaces. This way you will elongate your best features and showcase your torso -this dress and style of necklace will make you look leaner which is a winning combination in our eyes.
The Hayes necklace is the minimalists must have piece this season. This versatile necklace can be worn as a lariat or as a simple pendant the perfect piece to complement a V neck wedding dress. You will wear this again and again.
We do hope that we have helped with that all important necklace choice on your big day. If you have a neckline that hasn’t been mentioned why not drop us a comment, we would be more than happy to help.
Wedding season is in full swing, with a flurry of engagements and the melodic tap of wedding planning filling the air each day.
We are certainly in prime wedding preparation territory and know that choosing the perfect wedding bands will be at the top of your to do list. A ring that will be worn forever requires a great deal of thought. Something that will sit flush against that dazzling engagement ring, of which many moments were spent deciding. Your wedding ring is the true ring of love, so it pays to spend some time finding the perfect wedding ring for you and your love.
There are so many options when it comes to wedding ring design, whether you are looking for a traditional band or something slightly more fancy. The good news is that your wedding ring can be made to be as exclusive as you desire.
When choosing your dream wedding ring style, we advise that your wedding ring metal matches that of your engagement ring. This works really well as the tone of the metal complements one another, and the toughness of the metal is the same level allowing them to sit side-by-side without damaging each other.
When it comes to selecting a style of wedding ring, think of what type of design you are looking for – whether that be a simple plain band or a glitzy ring accented with diamonds, gemstones or a pattern. Have a think about what finish you would like, smooth or brushed are popular choices; ladies generally opt for an elegant smooth finish whilst the brush appeals to more men. If you have no idea what style or design of ring you want, then that’s when a social media platform like Pinterest can lend a helping hand. Scroll through beautiful designs until you find your dream ring! Remember, when you are having your bespoke ring made, you are the designer.
Diamond Embellished Wedding Ring – £350
Patterned Wedding Band – £195
Personal touches can make a wedding band even more special. This could be anything from a hand engraved date or a handwritten quote delicately etched onto the inside or outside of the ring. Each little detail of your wedding ring can be unique to you.
What is your budget?
Like every other little detail of your wedding, having a budget to work towards is hugely important. Do a little bit of research on what your dream ring will cost. And bear in mind, you will be wearing this ring forever after.
If you can’t find your dream ring on the highstreet then a bespoke design is inevitable. When we hear the word ‘bespoke’ we often think pricey, but this is not the case. A bespoke design can be created around your budget, and the best thing about opting for bespoke is you can specify exactly what you are looking for and how much you have to spend. Great news is, you will achieve your desired look without blowing the wedding budget.
Do you want to match?
Would you like your wedding ring to match your engagement ring exactly, or do you want your wedding band to complement one another allowing each ring to accentuate each other, bringing out the dazzling brilliance and design of each piece? Matching your ring to your partner’s is also a popular choice, whilst incorporating your own style and personality. Bespoke designs allow you and your partner to be as creative as you like.
All about shaping
One of the most popular questions is, ‘can I have a wedding band to fit my unique shaped engagement ring?’ The answer is YES! If you have opted for a alluring oval halo design or a stunning marquise solitaire, and have just realised that you are unlikely to find a band that sits perfectly flush against your ring, then do not panic! The possibilities are endless when considering bespoke. A wax model can be made of your wedding ring using your engagement ring as a guide, so when it comes to the completed model, the ring will sit together like a match made in heaven.
Amethyst and Diamond Oval Ring – £1495
Diamond Wedding Band – £1095
Lifestyle can play a huge role when choosing your desired wedding ring. This ring has to be made to last; if you lead an extremely active life or work in a more manual job then you may want to avoid having your wedding ring set with diamonds or gemstones. Or, if you love a little bit of glitz, why not opt for a channel set design rather than a claw setting -this way your stones will stay in place and you are likely to cause less wear, also avoiding lost stones.
Remember, your wedding ring is something that has got to last the test of time – take heed and avoid jewellery trends; you may love the style of wedding rings that are splashed on magazine covers, but trends pass and you will want to be left with a design that you will love for years to come.
The full experience
Nothing is quite like having your wedding ring made just for you from start to finish, and being part of the process from the get-go. A ring that has been designed to incorporate what you have always wanted this ring is all yours!
If you have any questions on how our bespoke jewellery service works at Browns Family Jewellers, please get in touch for a chat. We would be more than happy to help you create that fantasy ring you have been dreaming of.
‘What ring size am I?’ is one of those tricky questions that everyone asks themselves. Just like when you see a cute pair of jeans or a top you like – it’s something you should really know the answer to, and it can be very frustrating when you realise that you don’t. Your ‘‘self-talk’’ is very important, especially when it comes to anything fashion-related, which is why at Browns we have the SIZE GUIDE – an essential guide for working out your ring size.
And for you gents, we’re going to outline how to do the home detective work necessary to find out the ring size of your special someone.
The real problem isn’t “ring or no ring”, ladies and gents, it’s purchasing a ring that fits the finger you so want to garnish in jewels. f there is going to be any success in this you’ll need to print yourself a ring size chart. Simply placing your ring onto its corresponding size would be the initial easy option. Alternatively, if you’re a lady of leisure and enjoy shopping around, be sure to pop into one of your local jewellers who will be more than happy to professionally measure your finger – you’ll also be able to admire some pretty pieces whilst you’re in there!
It’s fair to say that 99.9% of the time there is a certain programmed association when it comes to a man purchasing a ring; we all know that ring + woman = engagement. Today we are getting down to the nitty gritty so you can find out that all-so-important ring size.
For the romantic men out there, finding out her ring size might not prove to be as simple as you may have initially thought, which is why we at Browns Family Jewellers have your back and are hereby providing you with the top 3 ways to securely measure her ring size.
1. SOAP AND GLORY ( literally)
Stop with the guessing and grab yourself a bar of soap. When she takes off her ring at the end of the night, press it into a bar of soap to create an imprint. You’ll be able to use the imprint to find out her ring size by using it with the chart guide. Always bear in mind though that one ring may not provide you with the correct measurement for all of her fingers. Be sure you’re checking the correct ring finger and once you’ve created your imprint, take care to ensure it’s clean and placed back where you found it – you don’t want to get caught!
2. AGILE ADJUSTMENTS
Not everyone has time to sleuth around and it’s fair to say that most of us are more Pink Panther than Sherlock Holmes. So, if you’re looking for an easier alternative to eliminate the guessing game, we have just the method for you. If we tell you that the average ring size for women is a 6 or a 6.5 and provide you with the Einstein of equations, you’ve got a perfect starting point. TIP: size up for a middle or index finger and down for the pinky. The good news is that as long as you’re within few sizes of her perfect fit, the ring can usually be resized to perfection. It’s important to keep in mind though that bands encrusted with diamonds and gemstones are harder to re-size, compared to plain metal alternatives.
3. CRAFTY TALK!
When all else fails you’re left with no alternative than to go in blind and perfect your crafty talk – be charming! Perhaps tell her that you have found out a crazy-fun fact about fingers and have her casually tell you her ring size without thinking twice about it. We can’t all be good at talking our way in and out of things, so let us give you a head start: if you take your shoe size, divide it by two and then add three it totals your ring size… Now, we can’t guarantee that this is in fact true, but we’re sure that she will probably go ahead and confirm her ring size because the equation is utterly false, and she’ll likely be all-too keen to prove you wrong!
So now that we have given you the wisdom and hopefully the will to get her ring size, or find out your own, why not browse our very own ring collection here!
The finishing touches can make any outfit, and this is no exception on your all important wedding day. Earrings can play a starring role in perfecting your bridal look, framing the face fantastically, while injecting glamour and personal style. Naturally, they complement your best attributes, as well as being the perfect accompaniment to glossy, styled wedding hair.
Whether opting for flowing angelic waves or a beautiful classic up braid, earrings can add extra allure and style.
The key to chosing the perfect earrings to suit that gorgeously tousled hair is all in the balance: if you are opting for a more flamboyant hair style then keep your earrings simple to show off the intricate hair design; and if your hair is being left slightly undone then a more glamourous style earring will work perfectly. This rule also applies for the style of the dress, the simpler your wedding dress, the more you can accessorise.
If a romantic, vintage style has been a huge inspiration for your wedding, then you have probably narrowed your hair style down to a stunning soft wave or possibly a braided updo, elegantly placed to one side and channeling 1920’s Hollywood glamour. Beautiful drop earrings are an ideal way to represent the enduring elegance of the vintage period.
