Did you know it only takes 26 seconds for chemicals to enter your bloodstream? When you think of all the nasties floating around it’s a pretty alarming fact. When you’re putting those chemicals directly on your skin though? It’s a whole new level of scary. The truth is, the beauty industry is notorious for adding chemicals to their products. Here at Botani, we KNOW they have absolutely no benefit so we opt for natural, vegan, plant-based alternatives every time.

It’s estimated that every-day, women add 500+ chemicals to their bodies through shampoos, conditioners, soap, skin care, makeup, fragrances and more. These chemicals can have devastating effects including; skin irritation, allergic reactions, reproductive issues and even cancer. If you want to keep yourself safe, please don’t let these chemicals go anywhere near your skin.

1.  PEG’s aka Polyethylene Glycol

PEG’s are not a stand-alone chemical. PEG’s generally include ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane. Ethylene oxide can harm the nervous system and is a known human carcinogen. Just to add a bit more fuel to the fire, it can interfere with reproductive health.

They are commonly found in moisturisers, cleansers, sunscreen and treatments. The sad fact is this ingredient does add moisture and has been shown to soften skin. Unfortunately, the risks far outweigh the benefits.

Botani Alternatives: we don’t believe in drowning your skin in chemicals to achieve a soft, luminous complexion. Instead, we use naturally derived Olive Squalane and Coconut Oil to nourish and hydrate.

2. Parabens

It’s estimated almost 60% of cosmetic products contain parabens. These are cheap and nasty chemicals that are used to prevent fungus, mold or other parasites from growing in the product. Basically, they’re to give products a longer shelf life.

Alarmingly, parabens are quickly absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream. Once they make their way there, they wreak all sorts of havoc. One of the big issues is, they mimic estrogen and disrupt our hormone balance. Studies are underway to prove the use of parabens increases the risk of breast cancer.

Botani Alternatives: the truth is, you don’t need chemicals when nature offers such a natural bounty. Our range includes the use of Grapefruit Seed Extract, Vitamin E, Vitamin C and Avocado Oil which are all safe and effective!

3. Fragrance

This is a big one. Those lovely, fresh smells omitting from perfumes, cosmetics and skincare you commonly associate with high-grade ingredients could actually be a result of synthetic ‘fragrance’. Under FDA law, manufacturers aren’t required to list the ingredients they use in their so-called ‘fragrance’. This little loophole enables them to add whatever toxic / cost effective chemicals they see fit to their concoction.

Studies have linked fragrance to chemicals known to cause cancer, respiratory problems, reproductive issues and more.

Botani Alternatives: We don’t use artificial ingredients to keep our products smelling delicious because we don’t need to! Naturally derived essential oils such as French lavender, orange peel and rosewater are safe and beautiful.

4. Silicone

Silicones are used in a multitude of products including; moisturisers, foundation, sunscreen, shampoos, conditioners, serums and more. While considered a ‘low-hazard’ chemical, silicone is an ingredient you should avoid at all costs. Silicone will form a seal over your skin which will clog pores and trap dirt. The result? Unhealthy dehydrated skin prone to acne and congestion.

They are widely used because they have the illusion of working. They create a barrier between your skin making your skin look and feel smoother. They are cheap, nasty and have no long-term benefit for your skin.

Botani Alternatives: Smooth, blemish free skin can be achieved naturally. We use Gotu Kola Leaf Extract in our Acne Rescue Cream to calm irritated pores. Along with the added healing benefits of squalene and acai berries, you really are spoilt for choice with our range of naturopathically formulated, plant derived skincare.

So there you have it. If your beauty products are laden with PEGs, parabens, fragrance or silicone, they should never touch your skin. Also? They have ZERO benefits to your skin care routine. Instead, try Botani’s botanically based, natural, vegan skincare range. Your skin (and your health) will thank you for it.

It’s no secret we’ve been a Vegan Skincare Brand since 1998 however, we’ve never been through the rigorous exercise of getting officially certified, until now. We’re proud to announce that on 7th May 2019, Vegan Australia awarded us this prestigious stamp of approval!

What does Vegan Certification mean?

The Vegan Certification Logo was developed by the Vegan Australia. It was launched to take the guesswork out of purchasing vegan goods for everyday vegans. When you see this logo, you can rest assured the products you are purchasing have not been tested on animals nor do they contain any animal products or byproducts.

The Vegan Certification Process

In order for us to be given the tick of approval from the Vegan Awareness Foundation, we had to prove we met their strict guidelines.

No Animal Products

To get officially certified, we had to prove that every single product in our range is free of animal and insect by-products such as eggs, milk, honey & silk.

No Animal Testing

Along with us proving Botani products are not tested on animals, we had to submit documents confirming our manufacturers, producers and suppliers also adhered to this guideline.

No Animal GMO’s

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. Animal derived GMO’s are predominantly found in food sources such as eggs and meat. We don’t use any animal derived ingredients whatsoever so this one was relatively straight-forward.

Animal Derived Ingredients

As a vegan brand, we want to arm you with the right information so you can make informed choices. In skincare, commonly found animal-based ingredients include:

  • Beeswax
  • Urea
  • Squalene or Squalene from sharks
  • Lanolin
  • Honey
  • Lactic Acid
  • Emu Oil
  • Musk Oil
  • Mink Oil
  • Tallow: animal fat typically found in soap
  • Silk Powder
  • Animal Hair
  • Collagen: from bodily tissue, skin and bone ligaments
  • Stearic acid: From pigs, sheep and cows stomachs.
  • Xanthan Gum: Widely used in the food industry primarily as a thickener. Derived usually from chicken, eggs and dairy.

We believe animals should be treasured and refuse to take part in any form of animal cruelty or consumption.

The Vegan Alternative

All of our products are free from petrochemicals, mineral oils, PEGS, silicones, parabens, artificial fragrances, artificial colours, animal derived ingredients, propylene glycol and sulphates. We’re proud to list our plant powered ingredients. All of our products are naturopathically formulated to optimise your skin health without compromising animal welfare.

Our favourite vegan ingredients are:

  • Olive Squalene
  • Coconut Oil
  • Olive Wax
  • Xanthan Gum
  • Glycerine
  • Olive Butter
  • Kakadu Plum
  • Quandong
  • Betaine
  • Plant-based Hyaluronic Acid

We’re thrilled that Botani has officially joined Vegan Australia and we look forward to continuing our journey as a brand that truly believes in the beauty of all people, plants and animals.

“If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others, why wouldn’t we?”

– Edgar’s Mission

P.S. If you’d like to read more about toxic chemicals and ingredients commonly found in skincare (NOT our skincare range of course!) you can download our ‘Ingredients To Avoid’ checklist here.

We hear from so many women who think exfoliating is an optional step in their skincare routine. It may seem like a ‘nice to do’ activity, a bit like a pedicure or a Brazilian wax (side note: can we please bring back the 70’s aversion to waxing? Brazilians are more trouble than they’re worth!) but in actual fact, exfoliating regularly will keep your skin looking gorgeous. Today, we want to step you through why you really need to exfoliate.

Skin Regeneration

Your skin is a collection of beautiful cells that do a whole lot of work behind the scenes, as nature intended. New skin cells are constantly forming but to let them through, you need to get rid of the older cells first. The very best way to do this is to exfoliate regularly.

Removal of Excess Oil

When your pores become clogged with oil, they start to act like putty blocking new skin cells from surfacing. This leaves you with tired, acne-prone, oil-blocked skin. Oil glands are stimulated by hormones. Hormonal fluctuations can be triggered by stress, puberty, poor diet, disease and of course, your menstrual cycle.

While exfoliating won’t treat excess oil production, it will unclog your pores and allow them to breathe.

Treatment of Dry Skin

If you suffer from dry skin, your best friend is obviously our Olive Repair Cream which works to hydrate your skin while healing dry, aging and damaged skin. But did you also know exfoliating will turbo-charge your moisture seeking efforts? Dry, flaky skin is an indication that your older skin is hindering your skin regeneration production.

By removing the outer layer of dead skin through gentle exfoliation, you are allowing new skin cells to make their way up to the surface.

Improve Absorption of Skincare

If you’ve recently purchased gorgeous skincare, it goes without saying you want it to work! By regularly exfoliating you are removing the ‘defence’ layer aka dry, older skin cells. These serve no purpose and in fact, they stop active skincare products from reaching the layers that are still a work in progress. You want to treat these first and foremost to ensure each new layer of skin is performing at its best.

Increase Blood Flow and Circulation

Good blood circulation is imperative for good health. Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to your skin and if working well, you’ll be glowing. Exfoliating works to promote blood flow and circulation which explains why your skin has a healthy shine to it post-exfoliation.

How Often Should You Exfoliate?

We suggest exfoliating 1 to 3 times per week to remove dry, flaky skin and let your new, radiant skin shine.  Any less, your skin regeneration efforts will be stalled. It may be tempting to exfoliate everyday but doing so will reveal new skin cells before they are properly formed.

Our 2-in-1 Exfoliating Scrub and Mask is the perfect potion for all skin types. Made from Oat Bran, Rice Flour, Quandone, Jojoba Oil, Australian Bentonite and Olive Squalane it works to gently purify and brighten skin by removing dead skin cells.

Best of all, it’s Vegan and 100% plant based. Also, it won the prestigious top gong at the 2018 Natural Health Beauty Awards. Developed by our Founder, Barbara Botani, it has been formulated to treat all skin types, naturally.

Twice a week with this pocket rocket of a product and you’ll be doing makeup free selfies on the daily!

How To Exfoliate

There is a right way to exfoliate and a wrong way to exfoliate. If you want a deep clean, all you need to do is:

  1. Cleanse prior to exfoliating (we suggest our Purify or Olive Soothing Cleanser if you have sensitive skin)
  2. Refresh the skin with our Soothing Facial Mist
  3. Apply the exfoliator liberally by gently rubbing in circular motions and pressing into the skin.
  4. Rinse off in the shower or with a gentle facial cloth.

If you have sensitive skin, our 2 in 1 Mask & Exfoliator should not be used as a mask. If you would like a deeper exfoliation, apply the exfoliator to your face (avoiding the eye area) and leave it on for 2 minutes. Finish with a soothing facial mist to refresh and hydrate your skin.

To nourish and hydrate your skin, finish off with our Olive Skin Serum. This will leave skin looking plump, soften fine lines and give you a healthy glow.

The truth is, you don’t need a million products to let your inner-beauty shine. We’re going to go against the grain and say every great skincare routine is made up of 5 high-quality, natural products. And a sensational exfoliator should be a must-have for everyone.

Did you know that the collagen in your skin is responsible for preventing lines and wrinkles? In fact, collagen makes up over 80% of your skin. As we age, our collagen levels decrease which results in less skin elasticity and more fine lines. Once we hit 25, our bodies break-down more collagen that we produce so it’s really important to boost collagen production. Luckily, collagen is a naturally occurring protein which your body produces for you. Aren’t our bodies amazing?!

What Decreases Collagen Production

As with all the good things in life, the levels of collagen in your skin are determined by your health. If you’re exposing yourself to harmful UV rays, cigarette smoke, toxins and sugary, processed food, your collagen levels are going to take a dive. So if you are smoking and skipping the sunscreen, you might want to rethink your strategy first and foremost. If you’ve got those two covered and you’re ready to increase your collagen levels naturally, read on.

We’ve outlined some of the best ways to increase the production of collagen and let your inner-beauty shine.

Eat Collagen Rich Foods

The age old saying “you are what you eat” is actually true. High-quality, natural ingredients and simplicity is the recipe for success. There are however, some foods that outshine others in regards to collagen levels. Some of the most concentrated levels come from:

  • Beans: all types
  • Almonds
  • Flaxseeds
  • Red Fruits & Vegetables
Vitamin C Is Important

Fact: your body needs Vitamin C to produce collagen. It kickstarts the process of collagen production internally. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants work to protect against the breakdown of collagen cells. So basically, Vitamin C will help your body create collagen and will then go on to keep those collagen levels high. Get in on the action by making these superfoods part of your diet:

  • Avocados
  • Carrots
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Berries
  • Dark Green Vegetables
  • Oysters
  • Tomatoes
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Garlic

Sleep More

When you sleep, your body repairs and rejuvenates. Without the right amount, your body can’t do the important work it needs to create collagen. If you are sleeping less than 8 hours per evening, your body will not create sufficient levels of collagen. So, it goes without saying, sleep should always be a priority.

Manage Stress

Stress can really do a number on your health. When you are stressed, your body over-produces cortisol, also known as the stress hormone. Increased levels of cortisol can affect your blood sugar levels, metabolism, memory, blood pressure and more. Surplus cortisol slows down the production of collagen.

Furthermore stress can lead your skin to break out in blemishes, to produce more oil, increase redness and inflammation and decrease skin regeneration efforts.

If you want healthy, glowing skin, find a way to chill out and enjoy life without the stress.

Exercise for 30 Minutes A Day

Exercise naturally boosts collagen levels and the best thing is, you only need to do it for 30 minutes a day to have an impact. As an added bonus, exercise produces endorphins which make you happy and happiness counteracts stress. Less stress means more collagen, more collagen means healthier, more vibrant skin.

Love Your Skin

Once you have the internal elements right, enhancing the appearance of your skin is easy. Our Olive Cream Cleanser contains Betaine which improves skin elasticity by strengthening collagen levels giving you a gorgeous, glowing complexion, naturally of course!

Just a small amount of Olive Cream Cleanser used morning and night, will provide deep hydration and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Follow this up with a liberal amount of our Olive Skin Serum. The plant active, Olive Squalene replicates the Squalene that is naturally produced in human skin. This will activate growth of collagen in your skin cells.

Bottom line? If you want healthy, supple skin start from the inside and work your way out. Your inner beauty is always more important than physical appearance.

Be beautiful, be you x

Melasma, a type of hyperpigmentation is a challenging skin condition to clear up, but there are a variety of practical solutions. You may have often heard of the term hyperpigmentation, but you may not have heard about melasma, so let’s take a closer look at this common skin condition and how olive squalene oil can help melasma.

What Is Melasma

Melasma is there term given for dark and discoloured patches on your skin, primarily on your face. It seems to be more common in women than men. If women experience melasma during pregnancy, this condition is called chloasma. There is usually a matching discolouration on either side of your face, and you may also find patches of discolouration on your chin, nose cheeks, neck, forearms, and forehead.

Causes Of Melasma

Genetic predisposition seems to influence whether you will suffer from this condition, and also if you have darker skin you may be more at risk. These findings may be because the darker your skin, the more active your melanocytes are. Melanocytes are the colour-making cells of your skin which when working in overdrive often produce too much colour leading to darker patches of skin and melasma. What causes these melanocytes to start working in overdrive?

As with most skin conditions, too much sun exposure and ultraviolet rays affect and often damage melanocytes and may trigger melasma. Other triggers of melasma include hormone sensitivity specifically a sensitivity to estrogen and progesterone, which explains why this skin condition is more common during pregnancy. Other causes may be if you are taking a birth control pill, photosensitising drugs, steroids, hormone therapy or applying some cosmetics which you may be sensitive to.

How To Handle Melasma

You will find many treatments for melasma on the market. However, most seem to have minimal long-term safety reassurances. Laser and light therapy may be useful but we suggest as a last resort. There are various other ways to address melasma such as using skin care products containing glycolic acid to remove the outermost layer of dead cells from your complexion and pure hyaluronic acid to replenish and restore your skin and as a hyperpigmentation treatment. At Botani we use sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, a natural component of human skin. It locks moisture deep into your skin, preventing transepidermal water loss. This results in improved skin elasticity, a reduction of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, softer and more supple skin. Botani products containing this ingredient: Rescue Eye Treatment

Plant-Based Solutions

A plant-based alternative used to help hyperpigmentation is olive squalene oil. Olives contain high levels of antioxidants, which are beneficial not only to your health when eaten in your diet but olives also offer enormous skin health benefits when applied to your skin through your skin care products. Studies suggest that extra virgin olive oil and olive squalene not only have incredible anti-ageing benefits, but they also have small skin-lightening effects to any damage and pigmentation from the sun.

Apart from the obvious of avoiding sun exposure during the heat of the day, it is also essential to cover your skin up with a high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from ultraviolet rays. Other treatments include:

  • Topical steroids
  • Creams to lighten your skin colour
  • Chemical peels
  • Dermabrasion
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Prescription medication
  • Olive Squalene
Daily Skin Care Routine

Although there is no cure for melasma, establishing a daily skin care routine effective for your specific skin condition is essential for everything from anti-aging to treating hyperpigmentation, including melasma. Commit to daily cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating your skin with an antioxidant-rich skin serum and moisturiser, as well as enjoying a weekly face mask and treatment are the fundamental basics to an effective skincare routine. One of the key ingredients to look out for in all your skin care products is antioxidants. Antioxidants help neutralise free radicals, and it’s the free radical damage which may cause melasma. Always consult with your healthcare professional or dermatologist if you notice any symptoms of melasma. Most of Botani skincare range contains a host of antioxidants suitable for addressing melasma but we highly recommend Olive Repair Cream.

To nurture your skin, we go directly to nature. Botanical oils throughout our organic skin care products Australia include acai berry, lemon myrtle, lemon scented tea tree, jojoba, sweet almond, avocado, grapefruit, roman chamomile, rose hip, rose geranium, blackberry seed, carrot, cranberry seed, cucumber seed, coconut, evening primrose, shea butter, myrrh, olive, passionfruit rose, and macadamia oil. Macadamia oil offers your skin incredible hydrating benefits and your health some deliciously wholesome goodness.

Skin Benefits Of Macadamia Oil

Macadamia oil is a non-volatile oil expressed from the nut meat of the Australian macadamia tree, where it thrives in rainforests and close to streams mainly in south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales. It is a vegan emollient and fragrance fixative consisting primarily of the glycerides of fatty acids. A healing oil to help keep your skin supple and hydrated.

Smoothes and strengthens and shines your hair, but it is also fantastic for your skin, especially dry and dehydrated skin. Macadamia oil is similar to the sebum of your skin, so it can deeply penetrate through all the layers of your skin. We use macadamia oil in our Nourishing Body Oil, and we have also added it to our Healing Lip Balm because it is excellent for skin cell regeneration and healing chapped lips. Its essential fatty acid content makes it useful for dry and mature skin, balancing your sebum production, creating a natural protective barrier and healing wounds, scratches and burns and soothing itchiness and redness. Although macadamia oil contains fewer nut proteins that trigger an allergic reaction, if you have a nut allergy, check with your healthcare professional before using

Health Benefits Of Macadamia Oil

Clear, slightly amber-coloured with a delicate nutty smell macadamia oil is liquid at room temperature. It’s excellent essential fatty acid composition, and the absence of cholesterol is what’s driving its popularity in the wellness world. Compared to olive oil and canola oil, macadamia oil contains the highest percentage of essential fatty acids offering useful anti-inflammatory benefits. We love using it to add a nutty taste to homemade mayonnaise, salad dressings and drizzled over our veggies. Macadamia nut contains protein, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamin A1, B1, B2, niacin, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium.

Botani’s Nourishing Body Oil

Our Nourishing Body Oil contains macadamia oil with an uplifting, fresh lemon and sandalwood oil smell containing antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-irritant properties. Also in our nourishing body oil, you will find sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, olive squalene, natural vitamin E, carrot seed oil, Australian lemon scented tea tree oil and Australian sandalwood oil. Suitable for all skin types. Nourishing Body Oil creates a protective film over your skin without leaving a greasy residue to deeply nourish your skin with vitamins A, C and E. These nutrients also soothe and protect your skin from environmental toxins and free radical damage. Your entire body will love our oil.

Excellent for extra dry, flaky and rough skin such as your elbows and heels. It locks in moisture for long-lasting nourishment, leaving your skin feeling soft and silky, without being greasy, giving you a beautiful harmony of ingredients for relaxing your senses.

At Botani we use natural, wild-harvested and organic certified ingredients from the highest quality plant sources from Australia and the globe.

An abundant source of essential fatty acids which help condition your hair and nourish your skin with deep hydration by locking in moisture. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E that help protect against free radical damage. It is a lubricant and emollient famous for its high levels of erucic acid (healthy monounsaturated omega 9 fatty acid) and as a natural skin care alternative to mineral oils and silicones. Glowing Skin Salad Dressing

Delicious dressing to help alkalize your pH levels, improve gut health, lower inflammatory levels and enhance glowing skin. In a large jar mix together:
4 cloves crushed garlic
A sprinkle of Himalayan rock salt and crushed black pepper
2 tablespoons tamari
1 tablespoon chia seeds
Lemon juice squeezed from 2 lemons
6 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Fill the jar up with a mixture of avocado oil, almond oil, flaxseed oil, chia oil or extra virgin olive oil.
Shake the jar to infuse all the ingredients together and store in a sealed jar in your pantry.
Whisk the dressing before each serving.
Great for drizzling over veggies and salads. I always have this dressing in my kitchen. My whole family loves it.

Exercise

How good is your glow after a sweaty workout? Getting a good sweat going is so healthy for your body and essential for glowing skin primarily because of the increased blood supply to your skin which flushes the surface of your skin releasing toxins and giving you that stunning glow. Pregnant women have an increased circulation which is why most pregnant ladies glow with radiance.

Vegan Skin Care

Globally we are making more ethical choices with our lifestyle, food, fashion, beauty and skincare. As a leading vegan skincare brand Botani is right at the forefront of this vegan and cruelty-free movement. Interested in this movement or not, glowing skin is your right and our 100% vegan certified, cruelty-free and botanically based natural problem-solving skincare and pharmaceutical products will help you get glowing.

Think of ways to invigorate your body and exercising and sweating usually come to mind, which of course do invigorate your body, but the thing is, you require energy and usually lots of it to perform any invigorating movement. For your mind, body, soul and skin to feel invigorated you need restorative sleep and the botanical powers of our Olivene Repair Balm.

Invigorate Your Body With Olivene Repair Balm

Your whole family will love our multi-purpose Olivene Repair Balm for a multitude of reasons including relief for itching, nourishing and repairing dry skin, revitalising cracked skin, improving skin barrier function, protecting and restoring your skin. If you have sensitive skin, eczema, sun-damaged skin, or if you have been using cortisone creams your skin will love our vegan, organic Olivene Repair Balm. Excellent for massaging into your cuticles, treating babies cradle cap, nappy rashes, rough and dry knees, elbows or feet. It is your natural petrochemical-free alternative to vaseline.

Feature Ingredients Of Olivene Repair Balm

We’d love to hear what you think, but as a leading natural skincare Australia brand, we believe our repair balm offers this impressive list of benefits because of it’s three key ingredients olive butter, olive squalene and olive wax. All derived from the olive, whose main components are similar to your sebum, the oily secretion of your skin’s sebaceous glands. Our balm offers significant moisturising benefits through moisture barrier improvement, enhanced absorption, spreadability and a pleasant melting sensation with a lighter touch.

Olive Butter

Rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential fatty acids to assist with anti ageing, lubricating and improving elasticity and skin tone. Fantastic for profoundly moisturising and nourishing your skin. Olive butter comes from European olive oil sources, used in creams, lotions and body butter or can be used alone and applied to your skin.

Botani Skincare Containing Olive Butter Olive Wax

Beeswax is probably the most commonly used type of waxes, but since we’re 100% vegan, beeswax is not for us. Instead, we prefer olive wax derived from the fraction of olive oil not saponified. It serves as an effective emulsifier and thickening agent in our skincare formulations. Olive wax is moisturising, conditioning, and a rich source of squalene which your skin beautifully absorbs.

Invigorate Your Body With Your Breathe

Find a quiet space or treat yourself to the relaxing sounds of the ocean. Deep breathing costs you nothing so let’s get it happening, any time, anywhere. Ashley Neese, the self-care practitioner based in Los Angeles suggests that breath is the most effective tool for enhancing your physical, emotional and mental state. With your breath, you can invigorate your cells, tissues, mind and body, eliminate excess carbon dioxide, amp up an abundant supply of oxygen and lower levels of your stress hormone cortisol, which in turn lowers any cortisol induced skin breakouts.

To calm your nervous system, begin by inhaling through your nose for four counts, hold your breath for five counts and exhale through your nose for five counts. Repeat until you feel peacefully relaxed. Deep diaphragm breathing may also reduce pro-inflammatory biomarkers, which is essential for skin conditions such as skin irritation, eczema, acne, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and contact dermatitis.

Invigorate Your Body With Sleep

Sleep is when most of the magic happens with your skin and body. Lack of quality sleep and sleepless nights can lead to dull skin, puffy eyes, and dark circles. During sleep your skin and body repairs and regenerates itself, usually between the hours of 9 pm and midnight. Sleep enhances your collagen production which reduces fine lines and cell damage reverses. Melatonin, your sleep hormone, is produced at night when it is dark. Melatonin repairs any UV damage which helps slow down the ageing process of your skin.

How To Increase Melatonin

Laughing and happiness help produce melatonin, because the more serotonin, your happy hormone, you generate during the day the more melatonin you produce at night. For quality restorative sleep, you need melatonin. Although your body is fantastic at producing hormones, including melatonin, there are things which can disrupt the production of hormones. Studies are suggesting the light from your computer, cell phones and TV’s maybe messing with our melatonin production. Sleep deprivation, as you know, is a contributing factor for many of today’s health and skin conditions.

To improve blood levels of your pineal hormone melatonin during the night create a regular bedtime routine for healthy sleep and ban all artificial light before bedtime. Before going to bed turn off your phone, tablet, computer, TV and bright lights, instead flick some romantic candles on, chat with your partner, read a book, practise meditation, restorative yoga or deep breathing. During the day soak up some safe sun which increases your melatonin production at night. As well, flick your WiFi switch off while you sleep.

Foods To Enhance Your Sleep

There are some delicious plant-based foods which contain melatonin such as almonds, bananas, oranges, goji berries, walnuts, pineapple and warm milk. An essential amino acid called tryptophan is a precursor your body requires to make melatonin. So into your evening meal add foods high in tryptophan such as turkey, chicken, chickpeas, yoghurt, peanuts and almonds. Reduce or remove caffeine especially after midday.

Botani products are lovingly formulated to invigorate your skin, mind, body and soul. Each product is meticulously blended using olive-derived plant actives, including our signature ingredient Olive Squalene, traditional herbal extracts, potent superfoods and Australian native plant extracts.

You care about your body, choose healthy foods, practise relaxation techniques, exercise, manage your sleep and apply the best natural skin care. But do you feel strong within yourself and believe in your strength as a woman? If you don’t, don’t worry, you are not alone. Beliefs die hard, habits linger, and peer pressure is continual. It is not an easy task to honestly believe in your strength as a woman. We think that superfruits such as acai berry help your skin shine with glowing beauty which in turn may help you feel strong.

Your Strength As A Woman With Acai Berry

Botani Acai Berry Active Antioxidant Serum contains powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of acai berry oil which helps protect your skin against free radicals. Feeling strong as a woman is so beautiful. Being beautiful goes incredibly deeper than your physical appearance. Believing in your beauty and owning your strength as a woman is stunning. To channel into your strength as a woman try practising compassion, confidence, awareness, acceptance and surrendering. All five are powerful tools to help you believe in your strength.

1. Compassion

Self love is the most potent form of love and is linked to your natural beauty. Applying plant-based natural skin care such as Botani Acai Berry Active Antioxidant Serum daily to your beautiful face is one of the acts of self love that we love indulging in every day.

We also like to practice a mediation for about ten minutes every day on self love. Meditation can happen while walking in the forest, swimming in the ocean or sitting on the train commuting to work. Don’t be daunted by meditation, if all you do is come into a consciousness of how you are breathing, well that’s a good thing. No one is an expert at meditation, just practice it to give yourself the time to release and let go of any negative beliefs you may be carrying with you from your childhood. Be the same best friend and loving partner to yourself as you are to your dear friends and partner.

2. Confidence

Self-doubt, insecurity and self-esteem issues plague most of us. From a place of self love and compassion towards yourself begin to feel confident that you have survived these issues. Allow the essence of your self love dampen and hopefully remove these issues. List ten things that you love about yourself.

3. Awareness

Become aware of how you may be able to enhance your life, body and skin. Educate yourself on the effects of toxic skin care products to you and our environment. If you would be more confident with smooth, glowing and younger looking skin, add superfoods such as acai berry, olive squalene, cranberry oil, blackberry oil to your skincare routine. All these superfoods are found in our Acai Berry Antioxidant Active Serum. Become aware of how this serum uplifts your soul with the beautiful natural berry scent and nourishes your skin with its potent antioxidants.

4. Acceptance

Accept that there are some things in life that you cannot change. Change is the essence of life, we live in a consistent state of impermanence. The ebb and flow of everyday life show us the ups and downs, the joys and pains, the good and the bad. Lovingly remind yourself that where you are right now is precisely where you are supposed to be. Make an effort to accept this.

5. Surrendering

Between acceptance and surrendering, there is usually a gap because surrounding is the hardest to do, but not impossible. Surrender to how you feel and accept that many things are beyond your control, such as you will not be twenty years old again. Release your desire to be in control of everything, because surrendering and ‘letting go’ gives you freedom. Peace is whatever you believe it to be.

Appreciate What You Have

Sit with what you have, not what you need. Create awareness of everything you have. Wake up each morning and appreciate that you have another day. Be happy with what you have and celebrate who you are. The present moment is all you have. Where you are currently sitting and how you are presently looking is what you have. Let go of your past. Let go of what will happen in the future because none of it is guaranteed.

Surrender to the fact that you are a powerful human being. You are a walking miracle of life. Your body is full of systems all working harmoniously together to make you survive, look and feel beautiful. Proudly stand with complete confidence that you have, right now, the strength of a woman to stand tall with full confidence that you are strong and beautiful. Believe in your beauty!

You have most probably heard the term ‘treat your body as your temple’ a thousand times, but are you appropriately looking after your body as well as it is looking after you? One of the most amazing things your body does is it sends you signs saying “I need some help!” For instance, if your gut is out of balance, you may suffer from skin issues such as acne. Amazing! One of our top tips for beautiful skin and treating your body as your temple is to exfoliate.

Exfoliate Your Body

Your skin needs to be exfoliated regularly because your skin cell turnover slows down as you age and your production of collagen, which is a protein essential for maintaining the firmness and elasticity of your skin decreases with age. The good news is that exfoliating can slow this process down by stimulating your cell turnover and give you smooth, radiant skin. Exfoliating away dead skin cells helps eliminate dullness, roughness and dryness of your skin which helps reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven pigmentation.

Exfoliating away your old skin cells also helps your skin absorb all the nourishing goodness of your skincare products. Your cleansers, moisturisers and hydrating serums will be able to penetrate more deeply and do their job more effectively if your skin exfoliated.

Avoid exfoliating scrubs which have coarse particles as these can damage your skin’s barrier. Look for scrubs with smooth, round granules such as our Spirulina Salt Scrub.

How Spirulina Salt Scrub Treats Your Body

Botani’s Spirulina Salt Scrub is a luxuriously creamy formula with hydrating olive squalene so your skin will be exfoliated and feeling silky smooth. Our scrub contains sea salt and detoxifying, purifying and exfoliating spirulina to gently remove dry, scaly skin, unclogging pores and stimulate your blood circulation. Our scrub also contains Australian Lemon Myrtle to help with any acne, ingrown hairs and dry skin on your body. Treat your body as your temple once or twice a week with Spirulina Salt Scrub. It is also beneficial to prepare your skin before applying fake tanning lotions, to solve dry, lifeless, scaly skin and as a treatment for dry feet.

Spirulina For Your Skin

The healing power of spirulina is in the detoxifying and antioxidant properties of phycocyanin, which defends against free radical damage and create an even skin tone. Spirulina also balances your skin’s pH and helps ease itchy skin.

Any skin issues such as body acne, exfoliating removes cell buildup, unclog your pores and prevent any breakouts. Be aware that excessive exfoliation may cause further breakouts. Exfoliate gently and don’t overdo it. We suggest gently exfoliating once or twice a week. If you’re using a dry brush, use soft, natural bristles and ensure you don’t brush too hard.

Spirulina In Your Diet

Adding spirulina to your diet is highly effective for gut health, helps combat acne from the inside and assists with anti-ageing due to its high antioxidant content. Spirulina also helps lower inflammation and assist with other skin and health conditions.

Relax With Sea Salt

Sea salt contains high concentrations of magnesium and calcium to relax your muscles, increase circulation, and reduce fluid retention. Sea salt is one of the many natural remedies for eczema and other skin condition such as acne, psoriasis and dermatitis. On top of that, it hydrates skin, improves skin barrier function, and visibly reduces local inflammation.
