Join us for a Spring Celebration on Sunday May 27 from 1pm-3pm at the Alpine Crevice Garden!
Join the Botanical Gardens of Silver Springs and the Calgary Rock and Alpine Garden Society (CRAGS) on Sunday May 27th for our garden opening.
Explore the Gardens, meet our knowledgeable volunteers, and stop by and speak with the new Alpine Crevice Garden's builders. This new garden is located just off the path coming from Crowchild Trail and Silver Springs Gate intersection.
Our hand built Alpine Crevice Garden mimics a natural outcrop where gaps and partings in bedrock allow hardy alpine and steppe plants to put down roots. Our crevice garden hosts a large selection of such plants from around the world. A Native Plant Garden composed of rounded river stone and gravel surrounds the crevice garden. It showcases many small, native perennial plants, grown in lean conditions to keep them looking natural.
These new gardens grew out of a strong collaborative effort between the BGSS and CRAGS. Come and see what we've accomplished in the past two years through more than 800 volunteer hours, using tons of sandstone and some 450 plants representing over 115 species.

We are pleased to announce the completion of a new area of the garden! The Alpine Crevice and Native Garden is the only public crevice garden in Calgary. This project was created in partnership with theCRAGS - Calgary Rock & Alpine Garden Societywho worked closely with our volunteers to complete this garden.
Some interesting facts: • Over 800 volunteer hours since work started in 2016 • 36 individuals volunteered • Over 225 alpine plants in the two crevice mounds • Almost 200 chinook zone Alberta native plants in the rock and gravel area surrounding the crevice garden
Luckily the garden was photographed a few days before the snow. There are still some protective fences around the garden to protect it for the winter but please stop by and take a look!

A large group of Garrison Green Lodge for Seniors residents made their way to the Gardens for the fourth year in a row. They all enjoyed the spendiferous array of flowers and foliage - despite the brutal heat of the day. Some had walkers, others had walking sticks and only two required gator rides. Many had interesting stories to share and a couple even asked for calendars. The two most senior visitors (husband and wife) were 103 and 101!
We look forward to their next visit.
