Battle for beauty is a beauty blog about all things dealing with make up, skin care, hair, lifestyle etc. To be a confident woman is to be a strong woman and I want to encourage women to be their most confident selves. Make up can give women the power and confidence to be as beautiful on the outside as they feel on the inside and I want to give women as many tools as possible to make that happen.
It's been a while since I've shared some skin care knowledge with you guys and that is for a good reason; my skin has been struggling.
Part of me feels like a hypocrite preaching about transforming your skin when I'm suffering through a full blown acne attack and have massive scarring, but newsflash to me, it's totally normal!
I go through up's and downs with my skin just like everyone else and just because my skin is going through a bit of a bad time, doesn't mean I have a bad routine! Troublesome skin can be the result of many different things, whether it be hormones, stress, reactions with makeup products, something you eat, something in your environment, etc. However, there are a few things you can do to instantly transform your skin and get it back on track like I did, which is what I'm going to share with you guys today!
Identify Your Problem
This may seem like a simple tip, but inaccurately diagnosing the true problem could cause you to go about a skin care regime that could be working against you. Are you having trouble with acne, or did you forget to take off your makeup? Do you have dry patches or did you just drink a little bit too much the night before?
Identifying your problem has to come from a whole-body standpoint, and being honest with yourself! Things like sleeping in your makeup can immediately take effect onto your skin the next day through clogged pores and acne, however our skin sheds and goes through cycles, so the issue you are having is probably caused by something you did a week or two ago. Take some time, listen to your body, and identify if your skin is going through something on-going, or if it's just the result of something you might have missed.
Take a weekend off of makeup
Bet you'd never see me talking about this! Putting on my makeup in the morning is literally my time to relax, focus on myself and truly enjoy a moment to myself, so the thought of even going a day without that mental boost in the morning is something I cringe at! However, I recently had to get surgery on my jaw, which meant I couldn't pounce a Beautyblender on my face for at least 5 days (and boy, was it rough!)
Through that time though, I noticed that I was able to focus a little bit more on my skin and I instantly saw it transform! This might have something to do with me cutting out alcohol because of my medications and chugging water on the daily because of feeling dehydrated, but I noticed my skin become more radiant, bright and less irritated for the time I went without makeup. I hate to say I enjoy that, but I feel like taking the few days of reset my skin and let it breathe put it back into focus and when I did put on my makeup again, the application was 10 times smoother than before.
***for those of you reading this who don't wear makeup on the daily, you can take this section to treat yourself to some extra luxurious skin care treatments like sheet masks and serums to start taking action against what you recognized to be the problem in the first place!
Limit Your Skin Care Routine
You may have 3 items kin your collection or you may have 300. In either case, take the time to see what you are ACTUALLY putting onto your skin.
This now goes back to identifying your problem. In most scenarios, if you have a 20 step skin care routine, you are probably over-doing it. Pick out only a few products from your collection to help reset your skin issue and put the others on hold. If you don't feel like you have the products you need in order to treat whatever it is you're struggling with, do some research and invest in one (you'll feel good to treat yourself to some nice skin care as well!)
In the end, it's all about balance. You don't want to over-do anything when it comes to your skin care because our bodies are smart. Too much of anything is never good, so simplifying your routine down to a few products for a week or so can give your skin time to relax, rebuild and regenerate to a healthy stand-point.
Looking for a quick fix?
I know there are some of you guys out there who are literally looking for a quick fix of skin care, so I don't want to leave you guys disappointed! In the end, there is no overnight fix to skin care, it does take time. However, here are a few of my favorite makeup products that I can see results from in just a few hours and some, even minutes!
Neutrogena Stubborn Acne Spot Gel: relives redness in acne in under an hour and my blemishes are gone within a day or two! ***stubborn acne brand only! The regular doesn't work as well for me.
Summer Friday's Jet Lag Mask: rescue product for tired, dehydrated skin! Apply a thin layer overnight and your skin will be taught in the morning
GlamGlow Youthmud: kind of a harsh mask, but it exfoliates like no other and leaves skin instantly looking even and soft.
So I know you already went ahead and caught my "the only makeup products you need" video and blog, but I couldn't keep you hanging there! We all know we can't do makeup without our brushes too and I feel like this needed it's own dedicated video!
In this video I'm showing you guys the only makeup brushes you need in your kit in order to complete a full makeup look. I show you guys 12 different brushes so you guys have options to choose from but in reality, there are only 7 brushes you need, so let's dive in!
OH, stay tuned through the end because I included a bonus section of brushes that I personally use on a daily basis as well, but aren't necessarily brushes you need for a full makeup look. PS, they're awesome ;)
For those of you who came here looking for more information about their warranty:
*All Sigma brushes are hand-crafted which is why they are such great quality and a bit pricier than others! If a brush isn't up to your standards, you can submit a claim for a replacement. All brushes come with a 2-year warranty which is VERY rare in the beauty world.
We're back with another tutorial using the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Vault Collection!
After I struggled with the first palette I used, I decided to take your guys' suggestion and use the bling boss palette for this second look. I didn't want to take the one dark magic palette as a reflection of the entire collection so I will be using this one on camera, and the other two in my own time (follow my stories @battle4beauty for immediate updates) and giving you all a complete individual review in this blog post right here.
Check out the tutorial and thoughts on this look and bling boss palette! All product details listed below:
You'll have to check out the video to see my thoughts on the palette I decided to use, but overall I think the collection is
Very cute concept
The shadows are the same quality as the original Jaclyn Hill palette
The color selection is super diverse and very wearable but allows you to be creative as well
Packaging is EVERYTHING! Love the mirror, the names under the shadows and the revamped packing from the original. The outside is a glossy finish instead of matte like the original, which means the palette's won't stain on the outside or look dirty
Leave me a comment if you are buying or not buying the palette!
This blending brush is literally the blending brush, of all blending brushes! It's been one of my favorites for the longest time and is just a go to for your kit. It's not too big, not to small, so it's perfect for every eye shape and size.
I use this only to prime my eyes, however it is an essential! Before it would take me a couple minutes to prime my eyes and with this brush, it only takes me 5 seconds for each eye. It's great for buffing out primer quickly, but you can also use it to blend your concealer precisely, nose contour, smudge shadow, etc. AND it's on sale right now; extra plus!
I cannot live without this brush in my life! This is by far the best tool to use to blend out foundation. It leaves you with a streak free finish, blends our product super fast and doesn't soak up our product. You can use it to blend out concealer and contour too.
Still not sure what you should have in your makeup bag? Sigma makes the entire process simple with this start to finish brush set. If you're just now starting a makeup brush collection, this discounted bundle gives you everything you'll need to complete a full makeup look.
I've been using this baby for probably 5 years now and I don't know how I would clean my makeup brushes without it! It has special sections for face and eye brushes, to rinse and refine your brushes to not only make sure they get a deep clean, but to also ensure your brushes hold their quality through multiple washes, even though Sigma has a 2 year warranty on all their brushes!
This mat can easily extend the life of your brushes by many months, and keep you from putting old product and bacteria back on to your face with half-washed brushes. There are two sizes, but I've always used the smaller one and it works great for me.
Not going to lie, I'm not a huge fan of Sigma eyeshadow palettes simply because I don't like a lot of the color schemes. However, when they came out with this palette I was SHOOK! And so were a lot of other people because it's sold out :)
No worries though, it's coming back soon so stay tuned! This is the perfect palette for day, night, travel everything! The shadows are very buildable and you won't have an issue creating a full look with this. It also has a mirror, shade names under the shadows and high quality packaging.
Hope this helps your Sigma Beauty buying journey! Don't forget, you can use my code "battle10" for 10% off your order as well, so go save yourself some money and get some great products!
I just wanted to come on here and give you guys a little push to keep going. This past week, we lost two incredibly inspiring and amazing people, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.
Both of these extraordinarily inspiring people were battling depression.
This opened eyes for a lot of people that depression does not discriminate. It doesn't matter how much money you have, how cool your job is, how many accomplishments you've made; you can still suffer from depression, no matter what your circumstances are.
I myself have suffered from depression for the past 5 years in my life and thankfully, due to the help of my amazing friends, family, and many, MANY therapists, I am in an amazing place in my life, am no longer am suffering and haven't been better!
I one day want to talk about my story to you guys, but I'm not yet in a place to comfortably speak about my situation. However, I do want to remind you all that you don't have to suffer in silence. I hope these next few tips give you a bit of encouragement if you are going through tough times.
Being Strong Means Admitting When You Need Help
This is one of the most important things. You need to seek help if you are either suffering from depression, or feel like you are going through a tough time.
It's not a bad thing. You will not be judged. You will not be taken away from your job, family, friends, none of that.
It will be worth it.
There is nothing more powerful than having someone in your corner to help you through this crazy thing we call life. If you are not quite confident to reach out to a professional or feel you are not in a place financially to do so, reach out to a friend you trust instead. Talk with them and open up about how you are feeling. There's nothing to be ashamed about.
If you're not comfortable doing that, there is tons of online support. I actually found my current life coach through Youtube if I'm being honest. There are people who want to help, you just have to seek it.
*information on free hotlines are down below
Don't Compare Your Situation
Depression runs on a spectrum. No two situations are the same and there are multiple types of depression. You may say to yourself "I don't have suicidal thoughts, so I'm not really suffering" or something else along the lines of trying to justify your feelings.
Your situation is unique. Treat it as such. Depression can range from being in a state of sadness to debilitating pain. I had the worst spiral of depression when LITERALLY everything in my life was perfect, but I was still suffering. Depression knows no boundaries, and comparing your situation to other factors or stereotypes only makes things worse.
Avoid "I should's" and "I shouldn'ts"
One of the most dangerous thoughts I experienced when it came to addressing my depression was saying things to myself like:
"My life is great! I shouldn't be feeling like this."
"I should go see someone, but I can't afford it."
"I shouldn't talk about my problems... it'll make people uncomfortable and judge me."
"I should just suck it up and get through it..."
This type of mindset keeps you in a constant state of depression and only furthers your situation, because you think you can ignore it and it will go away!
It won't. Like I mentioned before, I felt like I had no reason to be depressed because my life was amazing. That very mindset sent me down a spiral even worse than it would've been if I had just shifted my mindset from "I have no reason to be depressed" to "I have an amazing life, but I'm struggling with depression. I don't want to feel like this anymore. Let me fix this."
If you need someone to talk to, I am here, and so are many other friends, family members and professionals who just want to help.
I've lost many amazing people in my life, opportunities and valuable time because of my depression and I don't want you to have to go through the same thing.
You don't have to suffer. You can live your life. You just have to seek help.
The world is a better place with you in it. Never forget that.
Love you all so very much <3

I wanted to put myself in the shoes of someone who is a beginner in makeup, or, just likes to wear makeup on occasion. So often, beauty influencers forget who their true audience is. It's not people who wear smokey eyes, cut creases and glitter tears every single day (although it would be nice).
Our true audience is YOU. People that are in school, work 9-5, and may not even wear makeup every day but like to wear it on occasion! Many times we think we need to get every single product that a beauty guru uses when in reality, a lot of them are not necessary in order to create a full makeup look; they're just nice extras and add-on's to have.
So I'm breaking it down for you guys! Cut out the extras and check out my video to see exactly which makeup products you ACTUALLY need in your makeup bag to complete a full makeup look.
So I have to start off this blog by saying... My life has recently been changed and I want to share it with you guys!
Victoria's Secret carries one of my favorite perfumes ever which is "Tease". I love the body mist so much and a few weeks ago I was running out, so I decided to venture to Victoria's Secret to buy more.
While I was there I wanted to check out the sports bra's too as they carry some of my favorite and a sales associate came up to help me.
I was speaking with her on what I was looking for as far as a sports bra, not TOO much support, but more than just basic support, and she asked me one question I have never been asked before...
"Have you been fitted for a bra before?"
At that very moment, I was SHOCKED! Out of the many times I've been to Victoria's Secret, I never actually got fitted!
If you are like me, from the time I started wearing bra's I just relied on my mother's advice on what size she thought I was and I literally never thought about it again. I always thought I was a 34B and that was it!
From there, the woman measured me and blew my mind...
I went from thinking I was a 34B, to actually being a 32D!!
WHAT! Never in my LIFE did I think I was a 32D! I don't even have big boobs! But apparently, you don't need big boobs to be a D.
I instantly looked at the woman like she was a Sephora employee trying to shade match me (no offense, but we women of color have always experienced that one white lady thinking our shade was close to an NC15... Nope!)
Despite my skepticism, I went in the back room, tried on like 15 different bra's and they all had fit like I had never felt before!
I didn't have a cup gap anymore, I could use EVERY hook on the bra, the straps weren't sliding off, and my shirt laid so perfectly I could barely even believe it!
Thank god they were having a buy one get one half off sale otherwise I would've been sad, but I walked out of there with the perfect Body By Victoria Demi Bra and I have never felt better about myself.
You never actually realize the difference a good bra can make until you actually have one. I feel SO much more confident knowing my bra will work with any shirt, I don't even feel my bra during the day and I'd honestly... MUCH rather wear this bra than no bra at all, which is saying something!
SO ladies, do yourself a favor, get rid of the anxiety of some stranger playing with your boobs in a public store (it's not bad at all guys, it's their job lol) and get yourself fitted for the perfect bra because it will drastically change the way you look, feel and go about your day.
PRO BRA SIZING TIP SECTION
PS! Victoria's Secret has this thing called "sister sizes", meaning you actually have more than one size. Here is how you figure it out:
Once you are perfectly measured, in order to find other possible bra sizes you either: *according to Victoria's Secret's page*
SISTER SIZE DOWN: One actual size smaller than your current band size AND one letter name larger than your current Cup. For example, I wear a 32D, your Sister Size DOWN would be 30DD.
SISTER SIZE UP: One actual size larger than your current band size AND one letter name smaller than your current Cup. For example, I wear a 32D, your Sister Size UP would be 34C.
If you follow literally any beauty influencer on Instagram or Youtube, I know you've seen this palette and I also know you've seen oodles of positive reviews about it (for good reason)
SO I know I titled this as an entire collaboration review, but I only ended up getting the perception palette because, money!... lol ya girl is ballin on a budget so check out my thoughts on the entire palette below, or you could just watch my tutorial ;) here ya go!

MakeupShayla x ColourPop Perception Palette
Gorgeous. It feels like a very high quality palette, and it has a MIRROR which is probably why it feels so high quality. The uni-carton is super smooth matte feeling as well as the palette itself so that is a big plus.
But we're really here for the shadows, so let's dive in!
Amazing. The colors are SUPER pigmented and you can get everything from your everyday look to a creative and bold look with this palette. Because they are super pigmented, you may have to blend a little bit more than you want, but take your time because it's worth it!
So here's the deal! Colourpop is known for being pretty affordable and for this palette you get 16 eyeshadows with high quality packaging and a mirror, all for $23. Now, I can't look into your wallets, so I will not tell you whether or not it's worth it specifically for the price, so I'll have to leave that up to you.
Hope you enjoyed! Leave a comment if you liked the video and have bought anything from the Shayla x ColourPop collaboration!
One of the worst feelings in the world is feeling your lips peel during the day or having them feel super dry! Lips are often over looked, but as the weather get's hotter and summer quickly approaching, prevention is everything as it takes around 1-2 weeks for lips to recover from a dry spell.
Take a look at these 5 ways to keep your lips hydrated for summer.
1. Drink Water
I'm sure you saw this one coming! It's the worst tip to hear from EVERYTHING, but probably the best you can do for yourself. Drinking water is essential for not only lip hydration, but for plump skin, smooth skin, and overall health and well-being. Staying hydrated from within will not only make you feel better and radiant, but will transform your lips on the outside to stay plump and hydrated as well. So grab that smart water and keep it by you at all times! You'll thank me later ;)
*I've recently been challenging myself to drink 2 liters of water a day and it also does wonders for your skin!
If I'm being honest, there aren't many lip exfoliants out there that I'm completely in love with and trust me, I've tried a lot. I do enjoy a homemade gentle honey-sugar scrub, mainly because it tastes amazing, but the best way I've found to exfoliate my lips at night without the hassle of products is to take a warm, damp wash cloth at night and gently rub my lips in circles with it. To avoid my lips feeling too dry after I exfoliate, I follow up with a creamy lip balm or lip mask every time.
3. Lip Mask
I always thought lip masks were kind of iffy, especially over night masks because I thought they were just lip balms in disguise or they would rub off my sheets at night. That is definitely not the case with the one's I've used! I'm not a big fan of the gel patches or physical (sheet) lip masks, but my favorite is the Laneige Overnight Lip Mask. I received this through Influenster a while ago and fell in love! It's only a small size but it has lasted for ever. It feels really thick on the lips which is actually a good thing considering I wake up and it feels like I just applied fresh lip balm.
4. Invest in good chapstick/lip balm
This may sound obvious, but when I say good chapstick/lip balm, I'm not talking about the dollar chapstick from the gas station you bought because you lost your purse chapstick the other day. Lower quality chapstick will make your lips temporarily feel comfort, however, your lips will feel even more dry after it ends up wearing off. For long-lasting lip hydration, do your research and invest in a few different quality chapsticks and lip balms proven to increase comfort. Luckily for us, investing is never more than a few dollars. I'll list my favorite ones down below:
The other tips are great for long-term hydration for your lips, but for those of you who live in a super dry climate (like me) and are looking for temporary relief, I actually suggest a super glossy lip! There are a few glosses I have that aren't sticky that I feel lock in the moisture of a lip balm and add that extra layer of protection against that dry air! Here are a few that you might like that go with every lip color and outfit:
